Tyrone Carter has to to go

I could do a post on all of the good things I saw yesterday (god what a game for a fan hah).  I could talk about BB and his legend growing (along with my frustration when he holds the ball for 5 seconds).  I could rave about Wallace and the receivers.  I could gripe about Arians again not running enough (although he had some great calls in the game).  But.....I just have to gripe about Tyrone.

Now, I have always disliked him.....

It started when Jones-Drew made him look foolish in the 2008 playoff game.  I was livid when he let Gary Coleman juke him on 4th and 2 for 30 yards.  After that, I started watching him when he is in the game.  Trust me when I say he is so damn bad that I cannot help watching him all of the time.  Yes he was responsible for at least 2 TD's yesterday.  Don't tell me he was going for the INT on that Jennings TD....he didn't even put his hands out.  he was just lossed and timid.  The angle on the Grant TD isn't suprising since I have seen him take the terrible angle a dozen times this yr (go back and look att Bensons TD against us in the Cincy game).  The angle was exactly the same.  I know he has been scored on at least 6 times this yr in coverage.  Johnny Knox was the first and I am now blanking on the others but I have a tally in my head.

Here is my point.......sit this guy please.  Have Mundy play the SS.  It cannot be any worse.  I think they keep him in there because he is a veteran and knows the system but for gods sakes....do us all a favor and sit this guy.

Anyone?  Please tell me something I do not know.  Like Mundy doesn't know the SS position or that Tyrone has pictures of Tomlin in womens high heels.  Something so I can gain some confidence in the coaches evaluation of personnel. Tyrone, along with looking like a jackass with that hairdo, just looks like a boy among men.

I can't take it anymore...............

I agree

I agree completely, and while they’re putting Carter on the curb for trash pick-up, maybe with their free hand they can put Gay out there too!

Look what I can do!

It's not just Carter.

He’s definitely been awful, but so has everyone else back there. When Tomlin called the onside kick, he was sending a not-too-subtle message that some of these guys won’t be back next year.

Anthony Smith

Does anyone else besides me think it was a mistake to let Anthony Smith go? I think they had him play FS since Troy was at SS and that was not a good fit for him. Now that Troy has been down for 5+ weeks, we have no play makers at Safety. It’s clear that Troy makes everyone around him a lot better, TC looked like a Pro Bowler against Denver. But without Troy, those guys are getting exposed. I figure in our defense, the SS is the play maker and the FS is the stop gap. We now have 2 stop gaps at safety and they do not compliment each other at all. So no play makers, no ability to cover, no playoffs, no Seventh Heaven.

No it was not a mistake

Ditto, that was not a mistake

A. Smith’s mouth wrote checks his play couldn’t cash. Granted DB’s of any type need to be cocky and to have a short memory……….which A.Smith had…..but he never backed it up and to me….is just a younger clone of Ty Carter. We kept Carter because he kept his mouth shut, he is a better team player, and was cheaper in the long run.

Letting him go was one of the best moves they've made in teh last five years.

All he did was commit penalties and get burned on deep balls. He sucked.

Did you see the Steeler-Bronco game?

Tyrone Carter had two interceptions in the game against the Broncos. One for a TD. If you watched it, you should remember how Pittsburgh was getting beat through the air play after play until Carter came up with that HUGE int.

I know I’m defending him with that one game, but Pittsburgh doesn’t win that game without him.

I think Carter is a leader in that locker room. Watch him every play, he has everyone’s back. Sometimes he gets a little out of control, but I like the aggressiveness he has shown back there.

And yes, I do think he was going for the INT yesterday and simply didn’t hit Jennings because he would have been flagged for it. I think Pittsburgh will keep Carter, and they should.

good points

I’m not calling for his head, but I did point out a couple blunders.

I appreciate you defending him on the Jennings play but you have to get that flag if you aren’t sure. You don’t pussyfoot around and wiff because you don’t want a flag, especially when you are the last line of defense. I’m sure he wants that play back.

HHHMMMMMM....

can’t argue with anything said here on both sides of the Tyrone Carter stuff, but this what the Steelers season has been…ups and downs all year. Nobody has been consistant, sometimes good sometimes bad…except William Gay…he has been consistantly bad.

by ColinP on Dec 21, 2009 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't say consitantly bad

I would say he fluctuates between bad and mediocre.

The denver game! You kidding me.

His 1st INT would have went for 24 yards because Carter was beaten but the receiver banged into the ref so the ball fell into Carters hands. 2nd INT…. again, he was out of position but the ball sailed on Orton (mainly because Troy faked the blitz and dropped back scaring Orton). If you go back and watch all of the games you will see every damn week he gets beat for a TD. Every week he takes the wrong angles. One thing he is solid at is blitzing. Worst of all…..isn’t his salary about $1.6m or so? C’mon…….

by MEP12 on Dec 21, 2009 2:51 PM EST reply actions

I think I see the issue.

You want Carter to play like Troy Polamalu. That is not going to happen. =)

My problem with Carter

Ryan Clark is nothing special at safety (and I’ve been saying this for some time), but he knows his role. Can you throw on him? Yeah. Does he get many picks? No. He doesn’t make the “plus” plays that you’d expect someone like Troy make, but he consistently makes the plays you’d expect a safety to make.

Tyrone is completely useless in pass coverage, but that’s typical, he’s a backup. I don’t expect him to make great plays on the ball. In short, I don’t expect him to play like Troy. I do expect him to play like Clark, though, and he falls well short of that mediocre standard.

There were several play yesterday where he didn’t have to anything even remotely spectacular to do a satisfactory job but he didn’t. There was no reason the long TD should have gone for more than 20 yards. The running TD should have been about a 10 yard gain. There was another 40ish yard play where he couldn’t cover or tackle his guy. He was probably responsible for close to half of the Packers’ yardage.

So he’s not young or a “savvy veteran”, and I’d take Lamarr Woodley in a foot race. I don’t think Mundy would be a whole lot better, but when he’s been on the field, he hasn’t been nearly the liability that Carter has. We might as well see what he can do.

On a related note, yes, Gay has been pretty bad, but we do have to consider the lack of help that our CB’s have been getting when we are evaluating their play. Without Troy in the game, the CB’s have had deep zone responsibility a lot this season, so they’ve been playing off a lot more and giving up those short passes (and showing off their poor tackling skills).

The more I think about it, Gay’s play has been largely a function of the scheme we’re asking him to play in. Gay is a cover-2 corner. He’s not a fast guy. His best attribute is his quickness and ability to play the ball – something we saw a lot last year. However, because our safeties are more like LB’s this year, we’ve played a lot of cover-3, which assigns Gay to take a deep third of the field. He has to give a big cushion so he doesn’t get burned deep. When I look at Gay, I see a young CB who is playing timid and is scared to death of giving up the long play.

A perfect example was the play yesterday where he made a great break on the ball and could have had a TD, but he didn’t take his eyes off the WR and basically stood around and went for the tackle. I really think there is a solid CB in there somewhere, but he’s not ready to be the best player in his secondary. Put him in a short zone where he can break on the ball and knows he has help deep and I think you’d see a completely different corner.

We don’t have that option right now, though, so we’re stuck with what we’ve been seeing.

Whatever is going on back there

It is really a disaster. A lot of yesterday is forgotten because we won and broke out of a slump. “All sins are forgotten in a win”. However, there are still a lot of big problems in that secondary. I’m not much of a scheme guy (don’t know the diff between cover 2 vs cover 3), but Gay has looked bad a football player this year. Half the time he doesn’t look athletic at all. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a “throw Gay in the trash” person, but a reduce his role person.

Anyway, its the end of the day and I just lost myself in what I meant to say in this comment. Wow. Is Troy due back this week or what?

Carter is not that much of a problem as we think

But I think fortunately we are seeing the last of William Gay. I will be SHOCKED if he comes back next year.

by Han on Dec 21, 2009 3:48 PM EST reply actions

Prepare to be shocked

He is too young and cheap to let go. If the Steelers can find a new starting CB before next season, Gay would be fine as a nickel or dime back. Given Carter’s age and salary, I think he is more likely to get cut than Gay. And Townsend is certainly a goner, for the same age and salary reasons.

Oh Carter and Townsend are goners.

a) they are washed up and b) combined they make about $4.4M. That money freed up could go to something…anything better than those two.

Agree about Gay…… I am ok with gay as a nickle and/or part time starter. He’s young, inexpensive and will continue to learn.

by MEP12 on Dec 21, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions

Townsend might stay as a safety for a year so that the rookie we bring won't have to start right away.

I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Dec 21, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Carter is only decent in short zone or blitz

He can “buzz down” as we say from the safety position and rob a short zone. He occassionally blitzes effectively. Other than that, he is lost in open space – both as a cover guy and a tackler.

As stated way up above… his lame ‘attempt’ at intercepting the ball on the long TD play was as laughable as it was patheic. Even worse was the long TD run by Grant. His so-called ‘angle’ to the defender would indicate either a) he thinks he is a helluva lot faster than he is or b) he needs glasses or c) he just isn’t very good, which is most likely of all.

Carter is designed to play FS not SS. I think his problems lie in the fact he is not a Troy Polamalu player.
