Mike Holmgren Agrees To Be President Of Cleveland Browns
So, our friends from along Lake Erie have offered Mike Holmgren the kind of full architect type job he reportedly has been so interested in. What does that mean, if anything, for Eric Mangini's future in Cleveland? The Browns were disgraceful for much of this year, but have actually played inspired football as of late. It doesn't hurt when you lead your team to its first victory over Pittsburgh in the previous 12 matchups of this once great rivalry.
Interesting development.

Interesting indeed
Could this be another mistake made by the lake? I find it hard to believe that Holmgren won’t try to build this team around a west coast offense, and Mangini can’t coach that.
Mangini gutted this team for draft picks, and though they had a bad year I doubt he will get a chance to build the team he wants to run.
I really feel the Browns are again another 4 years away from putting a true team on the field.
We are really lucky as Steeler fans. When you draft in the top 10 every year and miss on your picks, you are screwed.
Yeah, I was going to say that with the improved play of late, Mangini might stick around, but I think you’re right about Holmgren going west coast offense with the team direction.

Holmgren still thinks he was robbed of that SB.
and very much hates the Steelers. I wonder how big of a factor that was?
If he could have gotten similar level of control, don’t you think he’d have taken the Seattle deal? He was there for years, so there would be much more familiarity and comfort level.

True
That franchise won’t be turned around any quicker than 3 years if all the right moves are made. Especially, with a division where 3 teams are pushing for the playoffs.

I dunno
It seems like in the NFL, it isn’t all that uncommon for a team to make a quick turn-around in one year. Just look at the Browns of 07. They had a nice 10-6 year with Derek Anderson at QB for cryin out loud. They have some talent there and with a good draft (I’d think Holmgren knows what he’s doing in that department), they could have a decent year next year. Don’t get me wrong, I hope they never are as good as we are, but it could happen.
Holmgren wants to do a "Parcells."
This is more about ego than anything and a good reason why we can only hope that control of the Steelers remains in the Rooneys’ hands. You can’t buy the kind of football smarts that the Rooneys have—no matter how much money you spend.
I think it's still Cleveland.
You can put frosting and sprinkles on it…but if it a pile of crap underneath… it’s still…well…crap.

Oh but a very good point was made...
Cribbs was called “the best player on the Sales Rack”…. wouldn’t you just love to see him in a real NFL uniform… 142 miles away Mr. Cribbs. Short, scenic drive and a breathtaking welcome coming through the Fort Pitt tunnel.

That would certainly go a long way towards clearing up our special teams woes. We would give up 2 or 3 less TD returns a year if Cribbs was a Steeler instead of a Brown.

STOP. Shades of Randle El?
I miss little old 82. Was watching NYG vs WASH. Wonder if the $$$ were worth missing XLIII?

Cribbs > Randle El
Was a big fan or ARE, but Cribbs is just a beast.

Don’t hold your breath. Trust me, he’ll get well compensated by the browns, and has no interest in going anywhere.

I would suspect that Holmgren is going to be instrumental in making sure this changes in the years to come. Sure, it’s not going to be overnight, but i wouldn’t expect the Browns to be te same pushovers in ensuing years. Every NFL team he has coached for or been involved with has either won a super bowl or gotten to one. The packers were terrible all throughout the 80’s…he won a super bowl with them and got to another. The Seahawks hadn’t been to the playoffs since ’91, and were completely irrelevant. He took them to a super bowl as well (as you all are no doubt aware). Probably the most positive thing about this is he has indicated he has no interest in coaching as well…IMO that would be a big mistake, one which has already made with Seattle.

Does this mean that Hasslebeck will be the QB next year for the New Browns? When will they change their name to “the Fighting Cribbses”?
Given what’s there now…it would certainly be an improvement to say the least.
