Sweed and Warren done for the year
Self-explanatory, but here is my source:
http://nflfromthesidelines.blogspot.com/2009/12/sweed-warren-done-for-year.html
I have heard Tyler Grisham has great hands and it looks like that will be put to the test.
If verified, I think this gives us a lot to talk about.
I think Sweed is going to be back on the squad next year, but Grisham has a chance to take his job. If Grisham performs, it would take a miracle for Sweed to earn another shot.

he contracted an "undisclosed illness" after the browns game
he didnt practice all week. just wonder what it was since it was a “nonfootball related injury/illness”
So maybe that is why Ward played
and didn’t sit…

He dropped the opening puck.

CB
Why not bring Sweed back as a CB next year. Apparently being able to catch is not a requirement to be a CB for the Steelers… makes Sweed a prime candidate!!

Not sure if you were being serious or not, but it is a lot harder to play CB than WR. WR you know where you are going. CB you are guessing where he is going.

Farrior can't keep up with RB's in coverage...
We might as well turn him into a FB next year too.
I’m not completely dismissing the Sweed idea, it can be done. But how realistic is it? Remember, Troy Brown was a part time CB, he was still a WR too, which made him as valuable as he was (he wasn’t particularly great at either position at that point in his career). If you’re suggesting turning Sweed into a full time corner, I ask one simple question:
Can he cover a WR?
Sounds simple right? William Gay has been doing exactly that his whole life, how good is he at this level? It’s not that easy, in fact, it’s probably one of the most difficult tasks in the NFL. Now you take a guy who has not played corner since at least high school (I’m assuming he did it then, which he may not have), and ask him to cover NFL wide receivers. Maybe he can, it is possible. I have doubts though.

Troy Brown was the guy who played for the Pats and did it, right? That was pretty impressive. I heard an interview from him on the ESPN: Football Today Podcast where he talked about that. Belicheat asked all the WRs if anyone wanted to try it and he was the only one to step up. He said he wanted to spend as much time as he could on the field. Respect.

Definite Respect...
And take a look at Mike Furrey in Cleveland, although I haven’t seen him play much WR, I’ve only noticed him on defense. Have to give props to any two way player now a days. Didn’t mean to slight Troy if I did.

Sweed at CB is definitely intriguing
Imagine a 6’4", 230lb. CB!
We know he can and will hit. And he’s fast enough. It’d be worth the try if he was willing IMO.
Is this conjecture? Or has this been mentioned as a possibility?
And yeah: respect to TB. A+ for effort and team-first attitude.
That is exactly what i have been saying...
If he only caught a few balls a year, it would be two more interceptions than we had this year!!

Playing CB requires the player to have the shortest memory on the field. If you give up a catch you have to line up and go at it again and eliminate the opponent. If you give up a long play or TD you still have to turn around and line up again and make a play if the ball comes back to you. Sweed has shown he can’t shake dropping a few passes, so how do you expect him to shake off giving up a catch?
it'd be pretty dumb to cut someone whose gonna count less than 1 mil against the cap next year
AND it’s only his SECOND season as a pro this year. they’ll give him at least one more year to try to get his stuff together. plus it’s pretty hard to grow when you only get on the field for a hand full of plays since he’s playing behind holmes, ward, and wallace (who is playing like a 3 year vet).
Rebuttal
It would be pretty dumb to cut Tyler Grisham if he makes some plays. Grisham won’t make that much money, either. I’m not done with Sweed, but Grisham doesn’t have to show a ton to secure the fourth spot. This fifth spot is Sweed’s.
Sweed made ONE catch this year and that was when he was the third receiver. When he comes back next year, it is quite possible that he will get fewer opportunities. If three of those opportunities bounce off his hands, then he has caught his last pass as a Steeler.
With his current funk, I think there is a 20 percent chance that those opportunities slip through his fingertips
I would put all the money I have down that Sweed gets an equal shot to try out for the 4th spot with Grisham, regardless of what Tyler does with his opportunity. Sweed is a much bigger threat than Grisham because he is very fast for his height. Also, consider that Tyler’s 40 time was around 4.65 and Sweed’s was 4.5. Not that much different, but a 5’10 guy running a 4.65 is far less impressive than a 6’4 guy running a 4.5.
So what I am saying is there is no possibility that Grisham “locks up” the 4th WR spot before the preseason or even the season next year.

Aaron Kelly
Faster, taller, healthier, younger. The league is full of tall, fast receivers who don’t make plays.
But is the league full of tall, fast receivers
Who don’t get a chance to make plays? The guy has had maybe 15 passes thrown his way and dropped 4. Judging somebody on that small of a sample size is quite ludicrous.

Two very different types of receiver.
Grisham is classic slot, Sweed can get deep and leap.

TheCommish said he heard a rumor about it being depression?
I was thinking Swine Flu…

by John Stephens on Dec 22, 2009 10:09 AM EST up reply actions
Depression would explain
Sweed’s inability to focus enough to make the catch in pressure situations. Especially if he was/is suffering from a previously undiagnosed condition. Maybe, given his struggles to date and his future potential, the FO advised Sweed to seek treatment and get whatever’s troubling under control.
If this is the case(and it seems to ring true IMO) we could see a vast improvement in Limas’ play, provided he gets things in order.
All conjecture, of course, but seems plausible given the evasive nature of Tomlin’s response to questions about it.
And he is the right age to begin to show symptoms (effects)
Most are diagnosed in their early 20s;
Could also be anxiety disorder – Zack Greinke had this a few years ago & now he is a Cy Young winner
For both of these, the Steelers are forbidden by law to disclose.
"Sick Puppy is ultimately as unforgiving as nature's order... There is no redemption or apology." - wikipedia
Exactly
and the pressures of transitioning from college hero to pro zero, the drop in the AFCCG, the media etc. could easily have brought on or exacerbated an underlying, undiagnosed mental illness or psychological disorder. He is absolutely at that age where symptons begin to manifest. And would be totally illegal for the team to disclose anything of that nature.
Since he was always said to be a hard worker with a good grasp of the offense and someone with no negative or criminal behavior in his past it would make sense that he might be dealing with something like this.
He seems like a good kid and a hard worker. Whatever it is he’s dealing with I hope him the best. With a little luck he’ll come back bigger, better, faster, stronger and more able to adapt to life as a pro.
One possible silver lining is that quite often madness is a symptom of genius; maybe our boy will return a superstar after this. I hope so.
I know what happened
Sweed went to Tomlin and said, “Coach I have no identity. Can you help me? Give me an identity that describes me and I will have something to shoot for.” So Tomlin “dropped” him from the roster.

the news that Sweed is done for the year is quite shocking...
I wasn’t even aware he had begun for the year!
Staph-Infection??
Maybe Sweed went into the Browns locker room instead of ours and contracted this “nonfootball related injury/illness”?
