Galloway and Retkofsky

So just read on Steelers.com that we have signed Galloway to replace Sweed and Retkofsky to replace Warren. The Retkofsky signing was expected, as he filled in for Warren last year and did a perfectly fine job. A little curious about the Galloway signing. Hopefuly Gresham will get to see the field and get a chance at the #4 reciever, liked the kids hands coming out of college. Galloway chose NE over us early on, and didnt last but a few weeks. Anyone think he will see the field, and if so make a difference at all?

I think Galloway will work for us

Brady’s passes were timed and the WRs had to be in their positions at a given point. Galloway was slow for that.

Ben can hold on to the ball till Galloway becomes open ;)

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen Galloway and slow in the same sentence.

Well, I wouldn't say slow...

From the reports in the preseason, he was outrunning all of New England’s secondary in sprints. Leigh Bodden (I think) said he couldn’t believe how fast the old man still was. I can’t say for sure though, I’m just going off of what I read.

The ultimate Question

is what will happen to Sweed next year. He has to perform in year 3 or that is it for him and a wasted draft pick for us. We all know Sweed needed to show something this year but has been a complete disappointment. I was hoping he could develop before Ward retires but there is no proof of that. Will we have to use that draft pick again to try to replace Burress, which is what we’ve essentially been trying to do all this time. Ben wants a tall receiver and there is no reason why we shouldn’t give him one. That is why I wanted Sweed to succeed. Imagine how dynamic this offense will be in about 2 years with a 6’5 receiver who is athletic, can catch, and is fast. And you have to account for Miller, Wallace, and Holmes, and Mendy coming out of the backfield. We’re talking about a top 5 offense if the line can block. Ben is in his prime we must give him as much help as possible. Thats why I wanted Sweed to suceed. I guess we just have to wait until next year. Its his last chance, he knows it – I hope he turns out good.

I dunno

They could end up keeping him even if we don’t see anything from him on the field. He won’t get big money anywhere and he is a viable #4 or #5 for us.

What happened to Sweed?

How did he get injured when he wasn’t on the field?

Also, what happened to Shaun McDonald? I thought he was our 5th receiver for most of the season.

If Hines is hurt and Sweed is out, does that mean Galloway plays all three-receiver packages?

by Steelin on Dec 22, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions

Lol...he still practices

There is no word on what the injury was yet…

I read

“non-football related illness”

I guess we can rule out “The Drops”, since that is football related.

by theatrain on Dec 22, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Sweed's illness is called "Bust-itis!"

It starts with not living up to expectations and then spreads to having no hands and no confidence. The ony cure for the disease is to get cut. In all actuality, I don’t know what is wrong with Sweed, but from what we’ve all seen the past two years, he is closer to being a bust than he is a good football player at the WR position. Anyone disagree?

by datruth4life on Dec 22, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I had this conversation with my buddy (a Bengals fan) earlier today. What I said to him was, Limas is a tremendously talented athlete. He plays physically, using his size to his advantage, and really seems to be able turn on the jets (look at how wide open he’s able to get on those go routes and posts).

Really, the only part of his game he’s missing is the “receiving” part of being a wide receiver.

by Hines Ward on Dec 22, 2009 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Still worth one more chance

I agree Sweed is closer to being a bust than a good player. But he deserves (and likely will get) one more chance next year to show he can play. He clearly has some skills, and he had no problems catching the ball in college. There is still a chance that he can figure out how to put it all together. There is no reason not to take a look at him in camp next summer, but if he hasn’t improved, he might not get a roster spot when the season starts.

by Steelin on Dec 22, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Agree that Sweed is down to his last shot with the Steelers

With our scouting department, it’s more likely that the Steelers find a diamond in the rough to come in and take that spot rather than Sweed all of a sudden becoming a great WR. It’s not good when you are a 2nd round draft pick as a WR and your lone positive career highlight is is making a block on a CB that didn’t see you coming.

by datruth4life on Dec 22, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

B.U.S.

Agree with you Truth. Said in another post that he is almost BUST. Think he will be at Latrobe competing with some older and younger FA to be the #4 or #5.

a shame about sweed

don’t want to pile on since the nature of the illness has not been disclosed. But his underperformance is a nonissue due to the emergence of Wallace. Holmes, Wallace and Miller are a really good trio for what will be the prime years of Ben’s career.
And as great QBs show (like Peyton, Brady or Brees), strong QB play elevates WR and TE performance more consistently than the other way around.

In the unlikely, terrible event the Steelers don’t beat the Ravens, i’d rather the Steelers give Tyler Grisham a try than stay with Galloway in week 17.

Nothing against Grisham,

FO simply wanted a veteran available out there if something happened and McDonald was gone.

Excited about Galloway

I’d take him over what I’ve seen of McDonald

Multiple reasons

The signing makes sense for several reasons. PIT needs another receiver and IF PIT can find a way to sneak into the POs there is a solid chance they’d be playing NE in the first round.

good point on NE

i’m so caught up in the scenerios that I haven’t looked much past just getting in the POs

McDonald still not playing for anybody

McD was cut a few weeks back to make room for Tyler Palko (he’s since been cut), and has yet to sign with another team. I read awhile back that he didn’t know what his role on the team was, so maybe it just didn’t work out for either side. but still a bit surprised the Steelers signed Galloway – it’s not like he’s gonna play on ST, right?

more concerned that Deebo is listed as “questionable” with a biceps injury – trying to track down more details (this according to Adam Caplan from scout.com)

Just heard Hines had a "setback"

on his hamstring injury and is day to day.

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Steelers Won A Ring With Retkofsky Snapping

This is a golden opportunity for him to win an NFL job. I can’t remember what trouble JR got into during the preseason but if he can keep his nose clean this time this is Warren’s second major knee surgery. Gonna be tough for 60 to return again.

falling off a motorcycle in the off-season. If you’re Ben, you get put on reserve. If you’re a long-snapper, you get put in the unemployment line.

I heard it nailed a HD camera on the top section

It had so much velocity behind it that it went into the camera lens and out of the white house big screen; knocking President Obama unconscious. On the football, in sharpie writing, read: "I don’t like flying and I don’t like Bears fans!
