Hampton, Harrison make Pro Bowl
Notable absences: perhaps Roethlisberger and Holmes? Hard to make a big argument with a team barely over .500, however... What do you all think? Just right, or did anyone legitimately get snubbed?

to answer my own question
Woodley might actually be more deserving of the Pro Bowl at this point, but they make the selections too early in the season. (a drum that TMQB beats)
The most glaring omission
Is that no Cincinnati Bengal made the Pro Bowl, and their had the best year since maybe 1989…Maybe they will take exception to this and play like the dickens Sunday night? Wishful thinking.
Thoughtful discussion with a sense of history
Yeah
I expected Benson to make it… guess not.

wow that is hard to believe.

hopefully it makes them mad… the interesting thing about the Bengal’s season is that it has been a real team effort – Benson is the only stand-out performer on that team imo, and he got hurt mid-season which is probably what hurt his chances to get in. One more reason why the pro bowl is meaningless imo…
Hard to say Ben, but how is Brady in ahead of Matt Schaub. Other than the fact that he’s the media darling. Holmes should have been, I’d say ahead of Brandon Marshall, but hey, Marshall’s the big name who whinged a lot at the start of the season and had a highlight reel catch. People remembered that
Santonio didn't have a shot
Everyone ahead of im a a pretty valid season
Marshall has 101 Rec with 10tds tough to say just his name got him in.
Santonios 4 tds are what held him back.
That's the thing...
Half the players chosen don’t even show up lately, either because of a bitter playoff loss or the scheduling. This year with the game 1 week before the super bowl, players from those teams wont be playing. Combine that with the fact that voting is only open for 2/3 of the season… Pro Bowl is now a joke

No way on Holmes
I had him in a fantasy team, and he was a consistent disappointment. At one point Mike Wallace had more points through the season than Holmes. I’d say that Holmes had ~2 really good games, and ~13 games where he just showed up.
Not necessarily his fault, but he did drop his fair share.
False.
Fantasy is not real football. Holmes is #3 in yards for all WRs in the league. Also, he has a ridiculous 15.9 yards per rec average, boosted by a silly 6.6 YAC average. Just because he doesn’t have a ton of fantasy points does not mean he is not a good football player.
Also, I’d be surprised if he has more than 5 drops since Chicago.

Not really. It is more name recognition than anything. Neither Reed or Lewis deserved to get in, but people knew the name. Same with Champ Bailey over Leon Hall.

I’ll agree on Ed Reed. Lewis was a deserving choice — unlike Harrison or Woodley, his role is more of a run-stuffer than someone who goes after the QB, and he played that role exceptionally well this season.
Also, it’s often argued that QBs don’t throw to Champ Bailey because of his reputation, and he still has ints and a forced fumble. I’m not saying that makes him more deserving, just pointing out the argument.
Either way
The pro-bowl has always been worthless in my opinion.

Woodley Snubbed
Actually playing better than Harrison for the past 5-6 weeks, but Harrison’s got the notoriety. Plus he’s just a beast, so congrats to him. Wasn’t expecting Snack to make it, but I’m definitely not complaining.
Woodley is now 6th in the NFL in sacks (5th in my book as both Jared Allen and Dwight Freeney are tied at 2nd with 13.5), and is the 2nd in sacks among all linebackers this year, falling short only to Elvis Dumervil and has easily been the Steelers defensive MVP down the stretch of this season. Still, if he gives even a crap about the Pro Bowl, this will be a chip off his shoulder to prove he is a very talented LB, right up there with the best.
You can probably tell who my favorite player is :p.

Wouldn't take anyone else
Heath is reliable with catches, positive yards after catch, and can block…
Just to add to the my Woodley point
Out of the top 10 pass rushers in the NFL (meaning the defenders with the most sacks), Woodley has the most tackles, tied for 1st w/ 1 defensive TD (Jared Allen), tied for first with 6 passes defended (DeMarcus Ware), and tied for second in fumble recoveries with 1 (Elvis Dumervil, Julius Peppers), and as I said above is 6th in the NFL in sacks, and 2nd among Linebackers. Out of those top 10 sack-artists, 7 made it, including all those mentioned above who tied with Woodley in multiple categories. By all rights he should be in the pro bowl.

pro bowl snubs
I believe several other Steelers would have made the pro bowl if not for the five game losing streak. Ben, Holmes, Woodley, possibly Heath and Hines as well. When you have a losing streak right in the window of the voting you’re going to get snubbed.

BB should get consideration...
but there are so many good QBs in the AFC it’s always going to be very hard for him to get in. If Ben played for an NFC team, I bet he’d be in with no problem this year.
I agree he had an awesome year
and I said he should get consideration. I’m saying he has to have big years like this to even be considered in the AFC with Brady, Manning, Rivers, etc.
Maybe snub will help Ben take his game to the next level ...
meaning not taking 50 sacks a year. Most likely, he and Woodley will end up being reserves when the Super Bowl teams are known (those players can’t play in the Pro Bowl, which is a week before the Super Bowl this year).
I think the team needs to franchise Snack for one more year and draft the heir apparent at the position in the first round (NT Dan Williams from Tennessee). If he or Cody isn’t available, then I’m taking the best OT (A. Davis from Rutgers or B. Campbell from Maryland).
The Steelers have to use this draft and offseason to get back to being a physical football team. Now, all of you can see what having a 4,000 yard QB, 2 1,000 yard WRs, a 1,000 yard RB, a TE with 700 yards and another WR with 700 yards really means – NOTHING if you can’t run the ball in the red zone when you need to put points on the board or get that third down and short.
I’m hoping that all of the added investors will help the Steelers be a little more pro-active in free agency, especially when looking for help in the secondary. They have to come out of this offseason with a starting corner next year and another one that will be ready to start in a year or two. They also have to wrap up extensions with Santonio & Woodley. I have a lot more faith in the Steelers scouting department to find us players than I do in this coaching staff of putting the right players on the field.

this is why the pro bowl is irrelevant
equally underachieving Ravens get 5 to the Steelers 2, not to mention the AFCN champ’s none.
The players who should play pissed with a chip on their shoulders are the high achieving snubs who have a perfunctory bonus clause for a pro bowl invite like every player.
Right
Lewis and Reed made it. Lewis is over the hill and Reed had a down year. The Pro Bowl is mostly bunk. Hampton making it is bad for the Steelers. He will want too much money to stay now that he is going to Hawaii.

Ty Carter
is as good as a “decent” player can be. He’s the hardest-working guy on the team, from all accounts. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t have the physical gifts he needs to dominate. Remember: he was outstanding as a role-player or filling in short-term.
He just can’t make every play on every down against every team’s best players.
About everybody we’ve played have singled him or Gay out and thrown at them all day.
I hope Alge Crumpler has a season-ending knee injury for what he did to Troy in game 1. I SAW that f***er look down at Troy and then “accidentally on-purpose” fall on his knee. Dirtbag.
Carter has kept his effort at 110%, even if he isn’t as successful as we need. He deserves respect for that at least.
Quite right
Carter plays his heart out, but he just doesn’t have the natural ability and skill set Troy does. We are spoiled to have the best free safety in the league, and boy, are those shoes haaaarrrd to fill.
That being said, Tyrone would be a starter on almost any other team. 20-25 out of 32…not bad for a 32 (?) year old.

Doubt he's starter quality on most teams
He might get in on a few teams. But chances are he’d be a backup most places. Otherwise someone would be paying him starter money and he wouldn’t be on the Steelers.

That kind of thinking is silly. Those moments happen so fast to think it’s intentional is silly. He didn’t dive at Troy’s knee, he fell down. That kind of thinking would then mean Timmons meant to step on Ricky Williams in the Mud Bowl a few years ago. These players are moving fast and in unpredictable directions. And most of these players are professionals who hate to see another guy injured.

disagree, if you know anything about alge crumpler – fast doesnt suite him well. I watched that play over and over and he doesnt even dive for the ball, think about how can he be intentionally dive at the ball that is near troy’s chest/arms and end up at his knee?

No.
Watch the play.
If you’re speaking from memory, then your memory fails you.
Are you so naive that you believe that NFL players are all moral, upright, decent, thoughtful human beings who are considerate of others? Because there’ve never been NFL players arrested for murder, or drugs, or wifebeating etc.?? Bullshit.
YOUR ideas are stupid. How’s that feel? Why do people open up with statements like “That kind of thinking is silly”? Who do you think you’re talking to? A dog, or a toddler? Show some respect, jackass.
I really hate arrogant, condescending comments.
apologies for coming off "arrogant" and "condescending"
I’m not trying to say your are an idiot, I’m saying that this particular train of thought is “silly”. I wasn’t trying attack a person, just a trend of thought. I think you can do that without resorting to personal attacks. You can tell me that you think my way of thinking on any particular issue is silly but not mean that you think I’m unintelligent. I am aware of a few issues (I won’t bring up cause it’s not the place) where I don’t believe logically. I am fine with that, and if the person who called it out had good reason I’d be fine with it being referred to as silly.
However I’ll stick to my guns. I’ve played a lot of competitive sports in my day and I understand that the speed of the game slows down the more you play it. However I think that we as fans tend to get emotional and assume intent in situations regarding injuries. I have seen plays where players are attempting to hurt each other, Jared Allen comes to mind. I’ve seen him intentionally shoot low at peoples knees.
In every scrum for a fumble players dive all over the place. You’re trying to add to the confusion to hope that either you or one of your team mates can come up with the ball. If Alge was looking down “at Troy’s knee” that’s a natural thing to do when you’re off balance and falling, you look where you’re falling.
As to:
Are you so naive that you believe that NFL players are all moral, upright, decent, thoughtful human beings who are considerate of others? Because there’ve never been NFL players arrested for murder, or drugs, or wifebeating etc.?? Bullshit.
My statement was:
And most of these players are professionals who hate to see another guy injured.
Operative word being “MOST”. You’re right, there’s some serious dbags playing football. But MOST of the players in the NFL are not the type who would want to injure someone. Other than Ray Lewis celebrating when he knocked out Mendy, in my recollection most players when they hurt someone else obviously feel bad and wish the other player luck.
Long and short (which this post did not end up being short, blame the slow work day before new years), I don’t intend to offend. And think you should try not to take things quite so personally that are said on a blog. Or at least don’t be so reactionary to take something that merely had the word “silly” in it and escalate it to “Stupid”, “Jackass” and “Arrogant”.
by Chicago Steeler on Dec 31, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions
Maybe I over-reacted too, but
i did so because you used the term “silly” a couple of times, and the overall sense of your reply came across as I said it did, at least in my eyes.
I too played many, many years of sports and am well aware that athletes in general have far greater awareness of and control over their bodies than most people. And more to the point- I never said Crumpler “dove at” Troy’s knee. I said he “fell on Troy”, and that it looked to me like he could have just as easily fallen anywhere else besides onto Troy.
We see players in every game fall on opponents- not to cause injury, per se-
but more to simply add to the effects of gravity over the course of sixty minutes of football. Every time someone falls on you it wears you out just a teeny, tiny bit more than if they hadn’t. It just so happened that Crumpler, in deciding to fall on Troy, happened to damage his knee as a result. Maybe not intentional but nonetheless effective.
Some players, maybe most, try hard to avoid causing other players injury, even opponents. Some players aren’t as conscientious.
But your use of the word “silly” twice in the first two sentences comes across as dismissive and seemed to me that you were saying that you know far more than me about how that thing happened, and that I was foolish in my opinion. In short: you pissed me the eff off. Hence “jackass” etc.
Everyone has the power to control the way they put their words together. I make an effort to be very careful about mine. When I’m rude, it’s because I wanna be. I tend to assume everyone else is too. You post here regularly, and I’ve seen how you talk to most people. You were being obnoxious, or at least snotty. I know because I’ve seen enough of your posts to know the difference.
No harm, no foul. It doesn’t strike me as grounds for a feud. Just don’t call someone’s opinion silly if you’re not prepared to be called a jackass for it. Seems fair enough to me.
Now, have we thoroughly thread-jacked enough, or do we need to work this out over email?
Wow
First of all, Troy is a SS, and that’s a joke about Carter starting on most other teams, right?
Eh.
First of all, Troy is a SS
Whatever. I just threw it together, quick ’n dirty style.
No that was not a joke. Have you seen how some of the safeties from around the league have played this year? Half the teams in the NFL can’t blitz with safeties because they aren’t physical enough, and most of the other half don’t because the rest of the DB’s suck monkey anus. So, yes, 20-25 of the rest of the teams in the league would LOVE to have a hard hitting, blitzing safety on their roster.

Ty Carter
could be a very effective starter on some teams, with the right supporting cast and system.
He has filled in for Clark and done very well when on the field with Troy. He’s just no fast or tall enough to be dominant on his own. Regardless, I think he’s an excellent back-up and spot player. He just can’t compete when opponents single him out against bigger, faster WRs and TEs.
Pro Bowl Voting
The voters must be people who only watch ESPN recaps of games, and not any actual games themselves. It looks like it’s just all the big names that the media hypes up every year. Woodley definitely should have made it, but I have no problem with Harrison being in. He’s an excellent player. He hasn’t gotten as many sacks this year, but he’s been dropping back in coverage more and he’s an absolute monster against the run.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those who place everyone into two groups, and those who don't.

Who cares? Pro bowl talk is for losers....
Teams like the Redskins, who aren’t going anywhere, really care about getting several players into the Pro Bowl. It soothes a wounded ego and keeps up fan interest in a team with no playoff hopes. It gives losers something to talk about.
I’d rather be the Bengals and have nobody picked and be division champs and going to the playoffs than some team with half a dozen guys on the squad.

Big Ben was probably the 4th best QB in the AFC this year, behind Peyton, Rivers and Schaub. I really disagree with Brady making it over Schaub, even though they both had approximately equal stats even with Schaub having just 1 great WR(Andre Johnson), while Brady had 2 in Moss and Welker.
I’m hoping that Ben makes it as a replacement, even though Schaub deserves it more than either Ben or Brady.
As for Holmes, he had a great year, but when you look at the numbers of the guys who made it, he had no chance. He has an outside chance at making it as a replacement, but I doubt it.
As for Woodley, he was probably the 4th best OLB this year behind Dumervil, Harrison and Cushing, so he has a good shot at making it as an injury replacement
