Here's your chance be part of the solution

Ok I compiled a list from my innovation poast.  I even added a couple.  Now it's time to vote for your new addition to the offense.  Keep in mind this addition is just going to be something you spice the offense up with.  After you vote defend your choice below.  When we are done I will forward the results to my staff and you may see it on Sunday.  I'm kidding of course.  If Tomlin pulls this off, I'm going to do something in honor of him.  I am going to grow a TWA (teenie weenie afro) and wear sunglasses to the Super Bowl parade.  Ok time to have fun.

I don NOT like #1 and #2. Dixon does not need to be on the field at the same time as ben. I can see anything BA draws up fooling anyone… and with #2 – I shake everytime logans touches the ball in fear he’s going to get snapped in two and lose the ball… the less amounts of touches he get the better I feel.

The thing I don’t like about the hypocycloid is that I could see the formation failing horribly.

Holmes lines up on the other side and runs a slant.

Steelguy99 is right; there is a lack of protection having 5 guys out there as WRs. I’d argue the play gives Ben some good places to dump the ball, though.

I voted for Hypocyloid with Logan. Running it with Memo didn’t work so hot. Since I could pick only one, I went for the one that earned us 27 yards.

Was heath part of the hypocycloid? If so you could take him out and run it with Logan and Mendy.

by steelguy99 on Dec 4, 2009 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but no

Yes, Heath was part of it.

No, I’d rather leave him in. He’s got great hands if he’s targeted for the catch, and he’s a good blocker if we him for a screen.

In essence, Hypocycloid is a passing play. I think Heath is more likely to get open. Besides, having the receivers trot down field is what leaves Logan alone on the edge.

by Varmint on Dec 4, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, I think we need to see Mendenhall run a few more passing routes before he could be in this formation as anything but the dump-off. Logan hasn’t seen any routes this year, probably because he is 2 feet tall.

Speaking of Heath’s legendary hands…they seem to have disappeared on him the past few weeks. He’s probably dropped more passes the last few than he has his whole career, not a good trend.

At least he isn’t braylon edwards. Classic drop last night. Limas Sweed could be someone’s #1 WR this year.

I’d even settle for more of Carey Davis and less of Matt Spaeth. In fact, I’d take Limas Sweed over Matt Spaeth right now.

And I’d like to see the bunch-3 set along with that having Ward, Tone and Wallace. Of course this keeps Heath off the field which I’m not a fan of either, however, we are talking about spicing up the O so this set put s some seriously sick talent on the field all at the same time.

Yeah I should have put an option for combos

They could put together some packages that exploit different weaknesses. It could sort of be like in the old Quke/Doom 1st person games (I haven’t played any new ones so that’s the best I can do) you could have many different weapons. Those weapons all present answers to various situations. For example you don’t use a rocket launcher or grenade launcher when a dude is right in front of you or you’ll blow your own face off, but you’d use a grenade launcher when you are fighting someone down a stairwell and a rocket launcher to hit some one in a corner at a distance.

Fullback baby!

I like a spicy fullback, give me some Alstott. Our passing offense, sprinkled with some strong fullback, is a dish I would happily serve to opposing defenses. More of a running threat in the red-zone would give us balance, and ultimately help Ben throw TDs. (That last sentence is mostly for marketing, lets jam that hell down the defenses throat!)

Rare vote for nine

It’s not as if this offense isn’t weird enough. Don’t think that’s the problem. Remember when THE problem was third and short and goal line offense.

Dixon sure looked good. He’s slippery smart, quick, and thin. And he might just stand up and quick throw.

You think his look against Ravens had anything to do with cutting Redzone?

None of the above

My suggestion is to stop passing on 1st downs so much and stop trying to throw TD passes on 1st down from mid-field. If you count the number of times the Steelers have done this since the season began, it’s utterly ridiculous.

When a first-down pass falls incomplete, which quite often is the case, you leave yourself with 2nd and long—which is almost as bad as 3rd and long. The defense can tee off on your QB and lots of bad things can happen.

Ya Ben really needs to be patient and get the ball off shorter.

Dont know how many times I screamed “THE HB IS WIDE OPEN!” Just dump it off and watch Mendy fly. Also, I know Wallace is very good at separation, but like you said, quit bombing it to him 5-6 times a game.

Sad almost..

To be honest, I never faulted Ben. But Dixon went through a game, against the RAVENS. That went to OT. Without a sack. Take notes Ben.

by Mechem on Dec 4, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

Dixon also

Threw to his first read nearly 100% of the time and threw for less than 50% completion. Most glaring example was a crucial 3rd down, I believe in the 4Q where Heath was WIDE open on the right side but was not the primary receiver. Result – Incomplete, PUNT.

Dixon rushed to get the ball out so he wouldn’t absorb any sacks. Ben, keep doing what you’re doing.

Ben’s completions percentage on first down is over 70%, he averages around 7 yards an attempt. Our running on first down averages 3 yards, and it is misleading due to several longer runs, most of them are 1 or 2 yard runs. I’d definitely agree with you but I like 1st and 10 better than 2nd and 8.

Make Dixon the NEW Slash????

Ahh back to the days of realistic football when we take average players and make them do more than they can handle…. QB/WR/RB Dixon is a great way to show that some people can do it all, but hey The Steel curtin has never been raised.

  1. Tuff Harris from Montana knows about some of the 8 man teams played here until you get to the college level. Where the O and D use many of the same players all 60 Minutes.

Football is 60 minutes of player vs. player and who is having good days and who’s not.

BA is dumber than you think

He’s an extremely good talent as far as speed, and when a play breaks down and he can improvise, that’s when he’ll be dangerous," Arians said of Dixon.

So he knew this and still made Dixon stay in the pocket 95% of the time against the ravens? Wow.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Dec 4, 2009 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Because if Dixon got injured in that game we were screwed. The only reason it was dumb, is because he kept him in the pocket late in the game. That is when he should have gone for the win and not protect us from Palko.

When you play scared you lose

You have to play to win not to lose, thats why we lost anyway. If thats the theory then just hand the ball off so we can protect the Qb, wait thats what we did 60% of the time anyways, and what we would have kept doing in the event that Dixon got hurt.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Dec 4, 2009 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

True, but...

Chances are when you play with a third string quarterback who has only been in your system a few days, you’re not going to win either.

If Dixon wanted to run, he would have. There is no way of Bruce Arians stopping him while the game is going on. I understand following orders, if the order to not run was even given, but not everything is Bruce Arians fault.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Dec 4, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Well to win we needed Dixon in the game, not Palko. So playing to win included protecting Dixon. It is not playing scared, it is playing smart. If Palko had come into that game we would not have had a chance to win it at all. With Dixon we had a chance. To me, that is playing to win.

Also, our running game was working, who cares if we ran it 60% of the time?

well we lost the game anyway

if Dixon ran it more yes, his chances of injury are increased (though, still slim, I mean cmon, its one game) but so do our chances to win the game.

I’d take a win for the off chance Dixon gets injured (though why people are treating him like glass is beyond me, sure he took a serious injury in college but that was awhile ago and it was one injury. Not like hes injury prone. Hes a professional athlete, let him run with the ball!)

But the way the game went is we lost and we didn’t really use his ability. So nobodys happy……

I voted #4

With the Big Legursky blocking…

I’m officially off the Logan bandwagon. Tired of watching him run into (overrun) our blockers. Doesn’t seem to have good vision. #2 is my least favorite on your list as a result. I know I’m talking ST, but vision is vision. He don’t got it.

I also like #7. Salamander and MeMo out there together is lethal IMO – both excellent pass-catchers, both serviceable blockers. I think that set opens up a ton of options.

The Hypocycloid with Dixon in the spot behind the recievers

Hines to the inside
Holmes in the front
Wallace to the outside.

Then the defense jams them all at the line, giving the pass rush time to get to Ben.

IMO, you need to have Holmes or Wallace on the other side of the formation. Otherwise the play is single dimensional. The threat of Holmes on a slant from the other side keeps the defense honest.

To Mike Tomlin for a change on the field

Hey,mike i am a steelers fan since 1971 .Just take this plan i bet you,you will thank me for this plan. Go back to the old days in the 70’s with this plan.Just take both running back in back field, put hines, spaeth, wallace, and holmes,oh don’t forget miller too.Put them on field all together including big ben, take one offensive line out, mean your least less blocker. You will see that no defensive can stand a chance to play on all of them.Somebody will be open on running plays and down field. In other when you got your best player on field in a threat to have the defensive line to blithz on ben.Because, you have willie, and mendenhall as your blocker or runner, when it be a fake running action play for three wide reciever down field. One will be open to the right of the field and another open to the center and left side.Or you can put dixon in for a running back to replace ben, because you know dixon can run faster than ben.

by duptydog on Dec 5, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions

I reckon we need to hold onto our leads more effectively, for our great defence, we are leaking aloot of points, the special teams also need a shake up. As for offence, i reckon having Memo/Parker on the field with Mendenhall in a splitback style formation could be goodf. Using a 2 TE Singleback set are great on 2 and 6 etc. I think our offence is good enough, we need a special teams shake up.
