A Decade in Review: Top 10 Plays/Moments
I have seen all these reviews of the decade on various sports blogs and columnists. And not much around here. Since we have taken our last snap in 2009 and the 00s, I decided to take a look back at the decade. What were the best plays/moments of the decade?. I will rank mine:
10) Mike Wallace FTW - December 20, 2009 - Maybe it is just fresh in my mind, maybe I just like Wallace, maybe it is because it won the game, maybe I just wanted to say maybe a few times, but Wallace's TD this year against GB was awesome. If, somehow, we slide into the playoffs this game and this play will be remembered as the moments that gave us that push. This touchdown was so reminiscent of another play that is somewhere on this list (spoiler, wait, am I supposed to say that before?). Anyway, just rewatch it and bask in the glory that that kid is only a rookie.
9) Ben Demoralizes the Ravens - November 5, 2007 - I couldn't find a good video of this, just some dude talking about the game. This was an absolute blow out early. Ben threw for 5 touchdowns...in the first half!! Also, this was James Harrison blow out game. he had 10 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles, 1 recovered fumble, and 1 pass deflection. Just a mammoth blow out of my least favorite team, after they had goose egged us the previous year.
8) The Best Interception of All-Time - November 16 2008 - Seriously, I think this is the most athletic and remarkable interception in the history of the NFL. Every time I watch this I am amazed. Plus, it made laser face sad, and that is always a bonus.. Honorable mention to the Troy interception against the Titans this year.
7) Steelers end Patriots 21 Game Win Streak - October 31, 2004 - Anyone remember this game? Ben's rookie year where they absolutely rolled the Patriots. Two touchdowns by Plaxico Burress and an interception TD by Deshea Townsend ended this game in the 1st quarter. Look how fast Deshea looks on that interception. I miss that. Moreover, it was just great to shut up the Patriots for once (although maybe we should not have showed their video cameras them all of our weapons).
6) Greatest Steelers Comeback? By Tommy Maddox?!?! - January 5, 2003 - Ok, maybe not the greatest, but still unbelievable. After a FG by Phil Dawson, the Browns were up 27-14 (it was 24-7 at one point) in the fourth quarter of this Wild Card playoff game. The Steelers would go on to out score the Browns 22-6 and win the game 36-33 in an improbable comeback staged by Tommy "The Gun" Maddox. It was the first lead the Steelers had all game and it would be enough to win.
5) Willie Parker 75 yards to the house - February 5, 2006 - If I am not mistaken this is the longest run in the history of the Superbowl. Just one yard longer than Marcus Allen's 74 yarder in SB XVIII. The Seahawks had a damn good rush defense, besides this play, they held him to 18 yards on 9 rushes. However, on this play FWP found the seam and no one could catch him. Honorable mention from SB XL: Double Reverse, Antwaan Randle El passes deep to Ward on trick play.
4) Troy makes Flacco look like a rookie - January 18. 2009 - Nothing like beating your division rival in the AFFCG to advance to the Superbowl. It is even better when it comes on a final blow in the form of an interception return. Troy made a great read on Flacco (was he actually reading his eyes?) and makes the rookie make a rookie mistake. The rest is just pure athleticism by Polamalu to get to the endzone. As former NFL QB Drew Bledsoe once said, "[If you beat a team 3 times in one year] it generally means you are better than them."
3) "The Tackle" or "The Shoe-Lace Tackle" - January 15. 2006 - That video is hilarious. Anyway, as you know this tackle saved a likely return touchdown on an improbable fumble by Jerome Bettis. Props to Ben for not giving up and making a huge play. Bettis owes his lone ring to this guy, so maybe he should quiet down with all of his articles. Also, thank goodness that Mike Vanderjagt absolutely sucks at kicking when it matters. I've never seen a less clutch player in the history of any sport.
2) James Harrison Gets Winded on a 100-yard Interception Return - February 1, 2009 - What can be said about this play that already hasn't? How did James outrun Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston? The world may never know! Anyway, I tried to find the hilarious video of Kenan on SNL acting as James Harrison. It is hilarious, so if you have it please share!
1) The Santonio Holmes Toe-Tap Touchdown - February 1, 2009 - This one takes top cookie, because it won the SB. Why is it that the insane pass Ben made always gets overlooked? Yeah, it was a great catch and amazing concentration to stay in and hold onto it, but that throw was amazing too. There are 3 defenders in that area and Ben slides it by all of them into the very corner of the endzone. How Ben even saw white through all of the red in that area is beyond me.
Sorry, mine are kind of bottom heavy toward the latter years, probably because that is when we won 2 superbowls, or because I remember recent games better. Chime in, what do you think?

Great list
Pretty much agree with the rankings.
"We are only going to score 17 points?"
Nothing on the 01 Team?
That was a hell of a team and a pretty good season. I would have looked for a play that year. The rest of it is good. I would have the Harrison INT as #1 however. Biggest play since Immaculate reception.
13 years and no playoff wins for the Dallas Cowboys... SWEET!

My memory is not the greatest
I looked at that season but couldn’t find a specific play where I thought it should get on the list. That was a damn good team though. We can only guess about whether or not that Pats loss was legit…

IIRC didn’t troy have another interception similar to the one against San Diego that same year? against the eagles maybe?
Things can always be worse....
I don’t remember anything like that interception. You are talking about the finger tip one? Maybe I am wrong but I don’t recall seeing anything.

Yes
i can’t remember exactly either, but do remember thinking that was 2x he made that type of pick. i believe it was one he came running out of nowhere from the middle of the field and dove for it. i may be mistaken, or suffering from Troy withdrawals:-)
Things can always be worse....
Thanks
And I think we are all in Troy withdrawal

Here is the interception
it was against the Eagles. The ball doesn’t come as close to the ground as the Charger one, but still incredible athleticism. Hope i post the link right

Eagles game he had one diving INT like the SD one
but not as good.
I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
Can't Argue with with those,
but you should have included Mel Blount calling the Ravens “Pathetic” during the MNF game when Ben threw for 5 TD and Deebo took over and about knocked out Ed Reed

Fitzgerald actually ran into one of his own guys along the sideline as he was gaining ground on Harrison. Amazing that he still caught up to him…had it been 1 yard sooner that’s not a TD. Not sure what happend with Breaston.
Bad Andy, Good Pizza.
If you look at the replay
he also ran most of the way out of bounds, so there were Steeler players that he had to dodge.
Things can always be worse....
All the more
amazing that he was still able to catch up. There’s a gamer for you…a guy I’d love to see in the Black and Gold.

It was more of a tongue-and-cheek comment about those two. I assumed good blocking accounted for him making it 100 yards. Or dumb luck. Haha

Should Have Been a Penalty
I loved Fitzgerald’s heart on that play, but the fact that he ran 40+ yards out of bounds before making the tackle should have been called a penalty. By rule, you have to make every effort to come back in after having gone out. He did not. If that’s legal then why doesn’t everyone do it on, say, punt returns?
by Citizen of Steeler Nation on Jan 1, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions
If I remember correctly...
I may be mistaken so sorry in advance if I am…didn’t he basically penalize himself by running out of bounds anyway because he ran into his own player on the sideline slowing him enough to permit Harrison to get in the endzone?
Ben to Randel El to Hinze TD in SB XL was nice too.
If you buy a foreign made product you give money to a person who will not be buying an American made produdt that you get paid to make. Think about it next time you're at the store.
It was a double reverse
Ben to Parker to Randle El. ARE passes deep to Ward:

Also good. I picked the FWP run over that because it set a record. I’m going to edit this one in though.

What a great list
Thanks for putting this together, really got me thinking.
Couple of others from my trip down memory lane:
- Bettis running over Urlacher in the snow and mud at Heinz to get the SB run started

- Closing Three Rivers Stadium with a crushing win over the Redskins
- Bettis last game at Heinz, with his post game lap and all
- Big Ben’s ridiculous pass to Ward @ Jags last year, as he was being pulled down, still think that was his best pass of the year (regular season).
- 2004 Regular season 15 game winning streak, that season ended in heartbreak but that run in the regular season sure was fun.
- 2006 season finale ruining the postseason hopes of the Bengals in OT with the pass to Holmes – LOL (I said after we lost to the Chiefs all I wanted from this team was to somehow – someway, get into the playoffs and go to Cincy and knock them out again – LOL – anything after that would be gravy….. I’m petty and shallow I know).
ok that ended up being a lot more than I intended, I’ll stop now.
Again, great list. I have always felt fortunate that my father taught me at an early age to be a Steelers fan, sometimes I forget (like after losing to the Browns), this post and then doing some reminiscing of my own has reminded me.
Wow
How could I forget the closing of Three Rivers. Biggest snub on the list.
Thanks for adding some good moments!

Bettis running over Urlacher
To me, that single play defined his career in a nutshell. If you want to show the kind of player he was for 10+ years, just look at that play.

The '04 win vs. the Patriots was especially awesome because...
…it was Trick of Treat night here in Jersey and my son, who was five at the time, was dressed as Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala (complete with full Steelers uniform, helmet and afro). It was a 4:15 game, so we were able to watch most of it before heading out. Nearly every house we stopped at had the end of the game on, and when people answered the door they gave my son a big cheer. This is Eagles country so I can only assume they were either being very kind or they all just hated the Patriots as much as most of us here at BTSC do.

In the ’05 playoff run, the play that I thought just changed everything was the gadget play, Randle El throwback to Ben to Cedric Wilson touchdown against the Bengals in the Wild Card round. Up to that point, it was a competitive game and Kitna was playing well in place of Carson Palmer.
And I think the interception that Troy ran in for a touchdown against Cincy when he ran over Palmer deserves a mention too.
As for play that made the most impact (although it seemed unfortunate at the time) was when Tommy Gun was injured against Baltimore in Week 2 in ‘04. Without that play, who knows how soon Ben takes over and I’d wager the Steelers wouldn’t have won 2 Super Bowls in the last 4 years.
Those are some good ones
I saw a video of the gadget play yesterday, but now I cannot seem to find it. That was a good one.
Troy Trucks Palmer The interception is nice, but Polamalu looks like Bo Jackon in Techmo after the pick.
I actually almost included the Tommy Gun injury and then 15 straight winning streak. I figured that was in bad taste though. And the fact that we fell short that last year to the Cheatriots, pushed out the winning streak.

santonio...
1. Broken play, Ben to Tone who weaves through for the TD vs Ravens AFCCG
2. Punt return vs SD playoffs round 2
Hines
End around for a TD vs the undefeated Eagles (week before NE came in to suffer the same fate). Mocking TO with the bird dance in the end zone…
Mocking 85 with the River Dance in the end zone.
Knockouts galore vs any defensive player

I actually think the diving one handed interception against Rivers last year was a better pick. Troy was about 6 yards away when that ball got tipped. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGlFqdjYqu4&feature=related

That was a sweet video. Hard to believe that all that happened this decade. It’s odd to look back on it all and think we started this decade with Stewart as our QB and now have a two time Super Bowl winning QB leading us. From Stewart to Shaw, 92 yard TD, to Ben to Holmes, Ward, Miller. Bettis running over everyone to Parker running by everyone and now Mendy doing a little of both. Kirkland and Gildon dominating QBs to Porter running over them and now Woodley and Harrison wreaking havoc. This decade has been amazing for so many reasons; have a current record of 102-56-1 and have won our division 5 times. We have made six trips to the playoffs posting a 10-4 record, and 4 trips to the AFC Championship Game. To top it off we have made 2 trips to the Super Bowl winnning both times and both have seen records set (FWP longest TD run and Harrison longest play in SB history).
It hasn’t all been on the field accomplishments either. Our team has seen 4 members inducted into the HOF – Dan Rooney, John Stallworth, Lynn Swann, and Rod Woodson. There are a few other players as well that we have watched that will soon be in the Hall – Bettis and Dawson come to mind. Dan Rooney and Art Rooney have each received Executive of the Year award in the past decade.
There have also been numerous awards given to members for their on the field accomplishments. We have had an Offensive Rookie of the Year in Big Ben and a Defensive Rookie of the Year in Kendrell Bell. Harrison was voted the Defensive Player of the Year. Two SB MPV’s – Ward and Holmes. Tommy Maddox received the Comeback Player of the Year award in 2002. The Bus was recognized as the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 01.
Our organization has delivered on and off field success on a regular basis. There is a reason we are considered on the greatest, most successful organizations in all of sports which can be attributed to the work the Rooney’s do. We are blessed to be able to cheer for this organization everyday. I am excited for what this next decade will deliver and the memories that will be made. Here is to a new decade of great Steelers memories and football!
