Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Let's face it fans, it's time for some Firings...

No I'm not calling for Tomlin's head at this point, but there has been a disturbing trend all season that this team can not hold a lead.  There no need for words or Tomlin-isms.  Some things should have been fixed by now and haven't been, which means some people should be let go.

Star-divide

A couple of weeks ago I would have said that ST coach Bob Ligashesky needs to be fired after continued embarrassing ST performances.  Well, they didn't fire him but made a few personnel changes which seems to suffice for now (bringing back Madison was a smart move).  So, I guess he gets a pass for the rest of the season for now...but I'd look for him to be let go after the season.

On the other hand, the one glaring issue to me is the pass defense, and most notably in the secondary.  I know things are different without Troy back there, but still the secondary play has been embarrassingly poor all year.  Today against Oakland, they single-handedly gave the game away.  They looked confused all day out there...CBs not sure if they were getting S help deep, S's out of position, getting beat individually, dropping INTs(Burnett's would have been the game winner), slipping and falling all day.  Yet, this is nothing new, for the most part it has happened all season.  So, either secondary is full of well below average players or the coaches really aren't doing their job.  It's probably a little of both, but to start with, I'd say it's time to let Ray Horton go as Secondary coach.

We must face the reality, that while Troy is an all-word SS, the rest of the secondary is below average.  Ike Taylor is supposed to be our top cover guy who's getting faster with age.  He should be able to handle opposing WRs man-to-man, but he doesn't seem to be able to (even though the don't play man often) and he doesn't have the hands to make a pic when we need it.  Not what you want from your top cover guy...below average for your #1 CB.  Gay has been one of the most picked on CBs in the NFL, and rightfully so.  He gives up too much ground, get'sout of position, gets sloppy with his technique and gets beat often...below average.  He's decent as a blizter, so maybe he should be a nickel instead of a starter.  Clark is a big hitter at FS which is nice, but he gets beat in coverage deep, and sometimes he jumps the short route or reads run too quickly and gets out of position....average at best.  Ty Carter is a better backup for Clark (then for Troy) in that he is a similar player, a big hitter but he gets beat even more often than Clark.  Also, he get into the wrong coverage from time to time....below avg. as a stater, avg. at best as a backup.  Townsend has lost his step as a CB and isn't even being used as much in the nickel these days, I'd say replace Gay with him, but not sure if that would work at this point...so below avg. as your 3rd CB.  Mundy is also more of a Clark type...big hitter but can't cover (and his Personal foul penalty was a dumb play even though he was trying to knock the ball out...it was already gone)....below avg. at this point.  Burnett is more of a STer than a viable DB at this point and his drop of a potential game winning INT shows why...below avg.  Keenan Lewis hasn't played much this year (and has been hurt at times) which is disappointing considering he was a 3rd round pick with hopes of coming in and challenging for a starting or nickel job.  If he could play, now would be the time to insert him to see what he's got but looks like he doesn't have enough yet....below average.  Madison is strictly a STer and Ratliff was disappointing thus he was let go.  There you have it, the state of our secondary is in sad shape and will likely be exploited the rest of the season.

Another weakness has been the pass coverage of the ILBs.  Farrior has been beating several times...two biggies where in the 1st Cincy game on the 4th down pass Brian Leonard, and in the Balt game on the 4th down pass to Ray Rice.  There have been others too, so I'm wondering if it's time to make him a 2-down player...he's still good as a blitzer though so there is atrade offthere.  Similar thing is true with Timmons, he can be beat in coverage, but he is good on the blitz.  Problem is Fox isn't necessarily the answer in coverage and he is best as a run defender and can blitz.

It's also time for LeBeauto come up with some new schemes and ideas to close out games because opposing teams seem to be able to handle the blitz late in games for the most part.  And with our poor secondary, he has to find a way to either get even more creative with the pressure late, or consider just rushing 3 or 4 and dropping 7 or 8 into a zone (like what Balt did to Dixon).  Would be nice if Ziggy Hood had come along a little faster as a #1 pick because you would think he'd be a good fit as a rush DL in that type of package...or in the zone blitz the LeBeau runs.

It's too soon to say that the game has passed LeBeau by, but this is the worst we've seen from one of his defenses.  That's why I'd start with Horton first and then see how things go, because I think everyone would hate to see LeBeau let go.

Of course there are still problems on the offensive side of the ball, and some poor decision making that I think falls on Tomlin...like trying the 53-yd FG in the windy side of the stadium.  But, the one thing that is encouraging about the O, is that most of the problems that we're occurring early have been able to be fixed.

Either way, I'd like to see less talking and more action from Tomlin, because right now it looks like he doesn't know how to right the ship he is sailing.

Disagree

Firings will not help in season, especially while the playoffs are still a possibility, if a distant one. Maybe Tomlin should take the playcalling duties, but it doesn’t make sense to fire the OC at this point in the season. It would only disrupt things further.

Firing an OC at this point would be counterproductive. He should go at the end of the season. Maybe Tomlin can take the playcalling duties from him.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Dec 6, 2009 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely.

Personnel changes for the management/coaches should only be done in the off season if at all possible. The message sent to the team wouldn’t be positive. Keep in mind our QB really believes in his OC… this is going to be a major boat-rocker for Ben when/if it happens.

Another little observation: You won’t find a bigger Dick LeBeau fan besides myself. I admire him and appreciate him more than words can say. That being said; I’m not satisfied with the Pittsburgh Steeler Defense giving up 21 points to a team that by any estimation is a much lesser team from OWNER ON DOWN to the last player on the practice squad. Do what you have to do, LeBeau,

I recommended firing Horton not Arians

I agree that I’m not an advocate of firing coaches at this point. However, the secondary has clearly been unprepared (or overmatched) all season and the same mistakes are being made. At this point, that falls on the coaching. If he couldn’t turn it around in 12 games, what would make anyone think he could do it in the last 4. Let him go and use it as a wake up call that no ones job is safe anymore.

why not..

kenny anderson, for OC next year?

by nycsteelerfan on Dec 6, 2009 7:04 PM EST reply actions

Wait a minute.

On offense, the Steelers have great players who can’t seem to put points on the board in crucial situations. In my book, that’s mainly poor coaching. But on defense (mainly in the secondary), the Steelers simply don’t have the players to get it done. You can’t blame the coaches for a lack of talent. Maybe blame the front office for letting McFadden go during the off-season.

It's the O Line

They won last year in spite of them, not because of them.

You have to blame the D today

Have to disagree Billy52, regardless of the points left on the field earlier in the game, the O came through when the game was on the line and scored two impressive touchdowns. Against a Raiders team that averages 10.5 pts. per game, 24 points by the O should be more than enough to win. I’m not an Arians fan, but he didn’t lose this game. The D did, and they did it big time. As if the first TD they gave up wasn’t bad enough (to make it 13-10), they gave up another (making it 20-17), and than embarassingly a third! (to make it 27-24) after the O came back twice. And again, this is against a team that never even scored 21 pts. in an entire game! Sorry, my friend, but that is on the coaching even if the players didn’t execute.

by Psycho Kuz on Dec 6, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Agreed but...

They look lost at times. Hard to believe coaching is the cause but it looks that way at times.

Ray Horton?

How about just blaming the secondary for really what has been a poor season. There hasnt been many interceptions and hardly any turnovers at all by the secondary. Mr. Psycho Kuz, the secondary is just not that talented if you take out Troy. Also, you dont know whats going on in the film room or on the practice field. Some of the blown secondary plays has little to do with coaching and a lot to do with desire and execution That’s on the individual players. Thoughts? Go Steelers!

i don't disagree with a lot of what you have to say

but you single out the wrong ILB i feel. Farrior is the one is is out of place. for years he didnt seem to lose a step due to age but this year he has. how many big plays do you see him making this year? too few. fox has made more big plays in the few games he’s played in than farrior has all year.

plus those 2 huge 4th down conversions you mention, both of those the player was covered by farrior and he was too slow to make the tackle

Poor Execution over time is on the coaching...

Back in my playing days, if you played poorly you always ran the risk of being benched….especially if you played without heart or intensity. Plus, you would put in extended work with the coaches to correct the mistakes you made. If after time you did not improve, you would certainly be replaced. With the Steelers secondary, some of the same mistakes have been going on all season. As an NFL coach you can’t let that happen, you either need to work with the players to correct the mistakes or replace them. You can’t throw up your hands in the air and say, oh well, my players aren’t that good, this is all I have to work with. And if you feel the talent at your position is inadequate, you need to go to your coordinator and make that be known. There are always personnel moves that can be made.

I also worry a little about LeBeau, because the trend is that the Steelers D can’t hold a lead and the secondary can be picked apart. This isn’t new, it has happened all season and I really haven’t seen any corrections, nor have I seen any moves made to improve.

I know firing is unpopular, but in the NFL you can’t just sit back and have the same problems time and time again and think it’s acceptable. Remember the famous words of Jerry Glanville, this is the NFL which stands for “Not For Long”

by Psycho Kuz on Dec 6, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

If you really want to get a synoptic view, just think back to the end of last season. The team peaked with the win over Dallas. The next game against the Titans the D had it’s worst day of the year.

The Browns were playing with their 4th string QB. So no real challenge there.

The Chargers D couldn’t get off the field. That and the man, the myth, the legend of Mitch Berger inadvertently beaned Weddle with the ball to preserve a bizarre 3rd quarter domination. Rivers still put up good numbers.

The Ravens might have come back on us if it hadn’t been for Troy snagging that pic 6. The guy is a difference maker.

The D collapses in the 4th quarter against the Cards.

There is a trend.

we beat the ravens…then we lost to the titans

by nycsteelerfan on Dec 7, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

not really

yes, rivers put up numbers..but only 11 yds rushing! HE HAD TO THROW THE BALL! HAD MANY SACKS DID HE TAKE? ravens? should have NEVER been in that game…FWP drops a swing pass, with no defenders in sight..and..sweeds drop..

+1

Absolutely. They have squeaked by so many times late in games, it’s almost ridiculous that they won the SuperBowl. Not so much how they played in the SuperBowl, but that they ever got there.

I agree that we have not been the same defense.................

especially after the fourth quarter of the SB. It is like the guys got shell shocked by Fitzgerald’s big play and have not fully recovered as of yet. I thought corners were supposed to have short memories.

by grapes on Dec 7, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

The Secondary.

I don’t think the secondary is a problem they didn’t see. We drafted 2 corners, and brought in a veteran. None of them worked out this season. Hopefully K.Lewis or Burnett develops and we probably will have to find another quick to get back to a top notch defense.

The thing is we don’t want quick fixes, this is an old team that is starting to transition to newer players. Ziggy and Sonny are in place on the line, Timmons and Woodley at LB will need another body soon, Lewis and Burnett at corner need a third and we need safeties.

One of the drawbacks to having a great defense with top notch depth is young guys weren’t making the team, and now we are getting old at once. Last year IMO was the last hurrah of a great group of guys that have been dominant for several years. The offense is improving and the pieces are there to be good for a while, but I also think we are only a few players away and some development from the youngsters from being a top notch defense again.

That’s not to say we are bad, we just aren’t that good, and for some reason it all goes wrong in the fourth quarter. Maybe we just don’t have the energy for it, these guys aren’t young and our depth is toast right now. Troy covers for a lot, he’s that good, but we need to get back to the point where with or without Troy we are a really good defense. You don’t pull off all-time great defense status without a Troy level player, but we can be very good without him, if our drafting turns out good we should be there before long.

the secodary was solved,,,

then they got greedy and blew by not signing mc. they already got the" good pick " discount out of him , they should have been willing to sign him at “fair market” value not “continuing discount”value,,,,,he had already gained ,experience, our system, made big plays in big games, and was ready to be a good starter right now that was our discount,,,,,,
it was a mistake to think gay was the same,,,,gay would have been a great nickle for years and deshea would have provided emmritus confidence if needed to fill in.till we found a better….. by not signing mac we screwed up 3 parts of the whole not just the best part of the one. and it would have had a descently long life span.
