Around SBN: The Animated GIFs Of January

They are who we were afraid they were.

We've certainly had our share of hints in recent weeks that something major was wrong with the Steelers. But a lot of fans, including me, didn't want to accept that the defending NFL champs have fallen this far and this fast.

But after a loss to the lowly Raiders at home, we can no longer pretend that the Steelers will get their season back on track . With a second-half defense that made Bruce Gradkowski look like Peyton Manning, the Steelers choked yet again, surrendering 3 TDs in the final 30 minutes. Offensively, they once again blew golden scoring opportunities in the first half that would have sealed the victory despite the late defensive collapse.

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but the fact is: this simply isn't a very good football team right now. When you can't win at home in a critical game against an NFL doormat, things are worse than just bad. This game was so pathetically removed from the Steeler football that fans have come to know and love.

So, while the sting of this horrific defeat is still burning deep, take the poll and let's hear what you think needs to be done to salvage a fast-sinking ship:

Poll
What needs to be done right away (if anything) to right the Steelers' ship?
Fire Bruce Arians and implement a new offense.

Bench a couple of starters in the secondary and let the young guys play.

Take the offense away from Arians and let Ben call his own plays.

i wouldnt be against benching a few of the starters in the secondary

but thats a thing you do midway through the season to shock your starters into actually playing. not something you do with a handful of games left between you and sitting at home in january

Gay sounds like he’s concussed. So that’ll be a benching for a game or two.

Ben

Could call a better game without Arians I know it. He likes to throw the ball and knows when to throw it. Arians DOES NOT! That pig thinks we have a W when we are winning by 4 points.

I'm not entirely sold about that

the announcers mentioned something during the game to the tune of “ben says he loves arians so much because they agree so often on what play to call and that many of the times ben wants to call a certain play arians often does it”

Irrelevant

1. What should he have said? It stinks, I can’t stomach the god awful play calling!

2. And if he’s being truthful, so what? The play calling still bad and needs to get better.

if he's being truthful

than saying “let ben call all of the plays because arians stinks so bad!!!” is a moot point, as they call mostly the same plays!

you come off sounding mighty arrogant. must be your superior robotic parts

Thank You For Noticing

As stated so eloquently in my post from 2 weeks ago “Who Do We Think We Are?”

The personality of a team is made in training camp and etched in stone at some point during the season. At 6-4 you already knew they were an underachieving bunch with no rhyme or rhythm on offense. Just wait for the big play. Injured on defense with a porous secondary and crippling special teams coverage spelled mediocrity. I love the Steelers and am still going to Miami 1/3/09 but they are a well deserved 6-6.

i'd vote for having the team have a ridic week of practice in pads

as kind of a punishment

it wasn’t arians fault ben decided to throw the int into crowd of defenders. or that ben dove instead of driving his feet to try to pick up the first down on the 4th and half yard in the 1st quarter.

I’m saying the secondary one. Gay has been useless, DeShea is too slow. Get Burnett and Lewis in consistently, get Mundy on the field, let’s give these kids a shot to make it count

Too far gone

Last season they all came together, got some bounces, some bad throws by opposing QB’s , some fortunate penalties and blown calls. Dick LeBeau’s defensive schemes were not totally understood and teams were scarred of the blitz. Ben relied on his instinct and some luck. Not this year.

They have problems all over the place. Offensive line, QB, special teams, secondary, linebackers. Most of all conditioning. They aren’t dominating teams physically. Also, how can you put all of your eggs in one basket and rely on one guy on the defense to bring it together? That’s just plain stupid. I guess nobody understands the defense other than Troy P.

Too far gone

I agree the secondary is stinky right now, but we thought the o-line was crap and they got better. IF we do make the playoffs and actully want to win there, we need better execution and cohesive play with our most experienced crew in the secondary. Changing up bodies this late is just as dangerous. Ok, maybe get Gay outta there but Ike, Clark, and Carter(for the most part) have done enough to keep all of our losses within 6 points. Troy coming back will help fix this problem.
