Pass Defense and Dick LeBeau

First off, Dick LeBeau has to take some blame today (which seems to be the consensus on this board).  This is definitely not a LeBeau defense post.  But this is the umpteenth time a team has rallied late to win, not to mention all the times that teams have rallied late and barely fell short (San Diego and Detroit come to mind).  But you simply cannot put that much blame on LeBeau for the fourth quarter playcalling when players when repeatedly in position to make plays.  Maybe there is an overall scheme or personnel problem (lack of pass rushing D linemen, perhaps), but that is a separate issue from the playcalling.

Ike Taylor had a horrible game.  He was burnt on one play (although if a safety was playing deep then he would have played it well).  On several other occasions, he was in position and simply whiffed (the jump ball).  Ryan Clark was atrocious.  You may say: he didn't miss that many tackles or balls.  Well that's because he was out of position all day.  Ryan Clark read short passes, long passes, and play action passes incorrectly with alarming regularity.  I was a huge Clark fan before this year and thought he should have been signed instead of Kiesel, but he has looked lost, at best.  William Gay is not very good.  However, I don't think he played horribly; just not well.  He is not a shut down corner and he is not asked to be one.  If he prevents the big play and keeps receivers in front of him, that's probably the most that can be asked.

Lawrence Timmons should not be starting.  Again, he is not horrible, but there is a much better ILB riding the bench who, for whatever reason, is not getting any playing time.  Timmons repeatedly misses tackles, fails to shed blocks, and reads receiver routes too late.  Gradkowski embarrassed Timmons on at least two plays.  Timmons is a liability in the run and (despite popular opinion) not very good in pass protection.  Yes, he can chase down a pass in the flats, but that is not the only thing, or even a primary thing, the Steelers ask from an ILB.  Timmons is great at getting to the QB.  He should be on the field on any third and long.  Other than that, he simply has not played to K. Fox's level (in the three games he started) in any game this year.

To bring this piece full circle, Dick LeBeau's playcalling seemed uninspired in the 4th quarter.  Very few blitzes, vanilla coverages.  Still, players were in position to make plays in did not.  The same thing happened last week: players were outplayed at the point of attack, whether against the run or pass.  LeBeau has not found the solution, and for that he takes all the blame.

The second I see Fox blitz like Timmons is the second when I jump on his bandwagon. If you want to pull an ILB pull Farrior.

And Harrison was burnt by Grad scrambling around in the backfield as well. I doubt they accounting for his mobility during the week.

i agree completely

farrior has certainly lost a set since last year although for years never seemed to lose a set. he’s made far too few of big plays this year. meanwhile fox has made more in the few games he’s gotten in. i know he was responsible for both the bengals and ravens 4th down conversion to beat us.

i would just like to see him subbed out in passing downs.

test - am I banned?

Who exactly is playing in the Secondary in the nickel and dime packages?

Is Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis getting any playing time? If not, they need to put the Rookie Joe Burnett in there ASAP (in the dime or nickel packages)

I'm surprised you didn't get banned for that ignorant fanpost

I know some things about Timmons that might be a reason he is underperforming

But I will not share them, as it will cause a ruckus.

Timmons suspect for some time...

He was hurt but something is up with this guy. If he was hurt and not making plays, I think Fox would start. He must be showing something in practice but isn’t capable of playing 100% in the games. He looks terrible against the run – very tentative and not physical. This has all been discussed ad nauseum here the last two weeks.

I wouldn’t mind seeing or getting the Timmons info you mentioned. Can I get it via email?

how much of ryan clark’s changes are due to troy being out?

you have to imagine that playing behind troy is very different from playing behind … well, anyone else, really. seems like he’s been playing much closer to the line than he had been in most games last season, which makes him more liable to misreads.

Just Frustrating

The secondary is just a bad unit as a whole. Dick LeBeau’s playcalling really was not the factor. The team made dumb mistakes in the secondary.

by docsteeler on Dec 6, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply actions

is there not a possiblity

that some of this comes from simply playing into February coupled with a cream puff training camp? Some of these mistakes could come from mental and physical exhaustion

by klompus on Dec 6, 2009 8:27 PM EST reply actions

It's possible

That is possible. However, age and being exposed as marginal talent by Troy’s long absences are also possible.

Honestly, there are some many problems back there I doubt it comes down to one, simple explanation.

by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 6, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Here's a crazy idea.

What if the offense’s inability to move the ball consistently or take advantage of scoring opportunities all season is just wearing down the defense? Not only physically, but also psychologically. So, by the time we get to the late 3rd and 4th quarter, they don’t have much left. The D usually plays pretty well in the first half as a unit.

with respect to this game

last time i checked, every time after the offense left the field the steelers were winning the game. except of course when the defense left them with only 9 seconds left in the game. i dont think it’s asking too much to stop other team from scoring and taking the lead once out of 3 opportunities.

in fact, every loss the steelers were up at some point in the 4th quarter but the defense allowed the other team to drive and they dont come through.

Indy & NO defenses ...

…are giving up big plays because of injuries to their secondary.

Their offenses are covering their butts, our offense is waiting for our defense to come around so they can return to winning ways.

by Marvin, The Paranoid Android on Dec 7, 2009 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

NO had 5 interceptions today despite playing without their top THREE cb’s

when indy was missing their top CB, their offense only scored 17 points against baltimore (2nd lowest pts scored all year for them) yet still managed to win. their game winning score was a pick 6 against the texans.

if you ask me, their defenses are still playing pretty darn good football despite missing key ppl

NO had 5 interceptions today despite playing without their top THREE cb’s

they had 2 interceptions against NE despite playing without their top CB and held brady TD-less. not to bad

by t1mmy10 on Dec 7, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

my point is

they’re also making plays even though letting up some. our defense was NOT.

a lot of ppl seem to want to blame the game on the offense for not scoring enough points to give the D a bigger cushion or not winning the time of possession battle by a lot to have our D rested going into the 4th. but it helps out the Offense a lot if you get ints/fumbles. it also helps if you dont let the chiefs and raiders put up 27 points against you.

if you would’ve told me before the game that our offense scores 24 points against the chiefs or raiders i’d say we win the game

This is what I was thiking Billy

Without sustaining drives with a grind it out offense (like we have done over the years), I am noticing the defense on the field for much longer than usual. The refusal to just shove the ball down an opponents throat in the 4th quater is driving me crazy. It IS apparent that Mendenhall can get it done. Late in the 3rd quarter… Mendenhall had 16 carries. The Raiders had been exposed as a terrible run defense but yet we still decided to throw the ball all over the place. Yes, we were effective in the pass game, but not nearly enough and we certainly did nothing to maintain control of the football and therefore left the defense whose entire scheme is predicated on wild blitzes to be successful, fend off the late surge of the Raiders. I think the extended time on the field has worn them down for the 4th quarter, slowing the pass rush and invariably exposing the extremely weak secondary.

By the way, Mendenhall ended with 20 carries on the day… You’d have thought we were behind by 2 touchdowns all day… That is just not enough running, period.

by Piratefan13 on Dec 7, 2009 8:28 AM EST up reply actions

you fail to tell the whole picture

“Mendenhall only gets 20 carries”—>Ben only threw the ball 24 times. willie parker had 3 runs and Moore had 1. Ben also had a qb sneak (run) and his 10 yard run was supposed to be one for Mendenall who went to the wrong side. thats 25 runs to 25 passes. PLUS the steelers were basically “down by 2 TD’s” because every time they stepped onto the field in the 4th quarter they were losing (because the defense let them down).

play calling before trailing in the 4th quarter:
passes: 18
runs: 21

we were easily on pace to have a 30+ run att game til the D screwed it up.

by t1mmy10 on Dec 7, 2009 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

and for this time of possession non-sense:
end of the game was Oak=32:49 Pitt=27:11

going into the 4th quarter: Oak=22:43 Pitt=22:17

the defense brought it on themselves by not getting off the field in the 4th quarter. it has nothing to do with the offense leaving them on the field too long the rest of the game
