Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Driveby Report: !@%$# Edition

I don't have much to say before I let the bullets fly so here we go:

1.  This is definitely a game of inches:  The Steelers were a few inches short on a 4th and inches, a few inches of extended hands from a Burnett INT that ices the game, about an inch more of Ike Taylor's hand contacting that wounded duck hailmary pass from an incompletion keeping the Raiders outside the redzone, about an inch away from Mundy deflecting the final TD pass, and about a inch difference in hand position and Sweed redeems himself with a hailmary TD catch.

2.  Mundy:  Don't blame Mundy for that penalty near the goal line.  Sure it was penalty, but he was coming trying to make something happen.  Think about it though.  If the receiver had the ball and he dislodged it they probably don't call that.  Well, he came into that game with it on the line with minimal playing experience also. It will be interesting to see if they give him a start next week.

3.  Gay:  I pray he's ok.  Also, he is not going to like film time.  I think he will however have a nice seat on the sideline (with or without a concussion).  I think they go with the young fella.

4.  Burnett:  The kid did well in his short time.  I want to see what he can do in a start.  Can it hurt?

5.  Ike:  Get off his back if you're on it.  I originally though the blown coverage TD was his fault, but I have to look at it again.  The telltale sign that it wasn't him may be that Carter was pulled after that.  Maybe not...like I said I haven't looked at it again.

6.  Ben:  Redzone picks kill you.

7.  This is all too familiar:  In the final drive of 3 losses (there may be more but I remember 3) there was a dropped INT.  This happened in the second Cincy game, the Ravens game and this game.

8.  I will not complain about the holding.  They just have to deal with it.

9.  Special teams looked better.  Welcome back Madison. Also good runback Logan, if you would have scored we'd have won.  Just kidding, there were lots of plays left on the field yesterday.

10. That makes two Qbs that the Steelers owned, now living out west that beat the Steelers late.

11. Redzone offense and two minute defense.  How about taking one whole practice and work on these two things?

12. 50+ fieldgoal at Heinz.  Why try? Feeling lucky?  Look at this season and think again.

13. Rush-Hard:  Looked good.  I hope they don't forget how good he looked and keep the running game going.  Running was not the problem.  Actually...I must say Willie Parker looked pretty good.  MEMO did some things too.  There was discussion around here about a two back backfield......

Extra bullets because I'm frustrated

14. The Patriot games are really keeping this from being a total loss.

15. Random thoughts:  If New Orleans and Indy were in the Super Bowl undefeated, do you think any Patriots would watch?  And if Indy won wouldn't that be poetic justice?  Billicheat goes for it on 4th and short instead of punting and the Colts take advantage. Then go on to a perfect season.  That would be funny.... Anybody been to a 3rd world country and seen one of those 19-0 shirts?  I want one.

16. Anybody selling their tickets?  I'll still go....

17. You know what would make this season complete?  A Browns loss.

18. I saved a bullet for you. I'll let you fire it off.

it was a double CB blitz lebeau called blitzing our best cover dback, first problem i have. 2nd is that is lebeau only brings 4 ppl for the umpteenth time during that drive and it hadnt worked once in the 4th quarter cuz the raiders were in max protection (the 2nd defensive lineman was in a short zone by the line to probably watchout for gradkowksi running or a dump off to the RB and didnt try to pressure Gradkowski until 3 seconds into the play).

the blitz didnt work and Murphy got a TD. i just dont know how LeBeau thought bringing only 4 ppl once again would magically work because we didnt have a sack since the middle of the 3rd quarter.

Good point

Smart move by the Raiders. Expecting a blitz, max protect to give time, QB looked short and saw the safety so it’s a no brainerand take a shot at the one on one coverage.

i was referring to the game winning TD, if that’s the play you were referring to. i may have misread something if you were talking about the 75 yard TD, incase it was one of the safeties fault who bite on the run and was supposed to help taylor (according to tomlin’s press conference)

by t1mmy10 on Dec 7, 2009 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah that was it (the Ike TD)

I didn’t see his press conference but I figured that is what happened. It looked like Carter was out of place.

2 Fine, but can I blame him for getting beat for the TD and concussing his own player? I think I will.

3 Hope he is okay, but I won’t mind seeing him on the sideline.

4 Agreed. With our playoff hopes pretty much extinguished, I think it is time to give him some reps and get others in. Let Sweed play and redeem himself!

5 Ehhh…a good CB makes a play on that wounded duck hail mary. I don’t expect Ike to catch it, but I expect him to make sure that catch never happens. See what the Raiders did on our final play hail mary? Yeah, something like that.

6 Use a gosh damn check down, ya dolt!

8 I will. If friggin’ Gumble, who knows nothing, starts to notice how bad Harrison is being abused, that is ridiculous. How many times have we seen the guy blocking Harrison behind him and still with an arm around him only to see no yellow fly? I’m not saying we lost because of this, but it hurts our already bad secondary.

9 Agreed. Madison had 2 tackles and was around the ball all day on ST. Glad to have him back.

12 Really a horrible call. Punt the ball and pin them deep. It is a bad offense that we should be able to contain. Even if we don’t, they have to move an extra 30-40 yards to get to the endzone. It also would have eaten up a lot more clock.

14 As much as I hate the Pats a win from them yesterday woulda helped us a bit. The Dolphins just add another team to the playoff hunt and we are on the short end of that stick.

17 It is a distinct possibility. What did we have about 30 fanposts after this game? If we lose to the Browns the fanpost traffic might crash BTSC.

18 Grabs bullet and points toward head No, no, no. It’s just football and there is no need to get nutty Steelers fans. We have about a 3 year window where we can still talk trash about last years SB to fans who teams have not won one (i.e. Ravens).

Agreed on all....with some additions. :)

2. What do you mean? That hit may save our secondary!! Fair enough on the getting beat for a TD. I’m thinking Carter would have gotten beat worse…..like that really matters…

5. True….but a good corner can also miss on that….just saying.

14. Do you really want this team in the playoffs playing like this? I could be doing something else than watching another implosion.

Triple DDDs

Deflated, Dumbfounded and Depressed. When KC kicked the field goal in OT three weeks ago, I had a minor meltdown, jumping from my recliner screaming UNBEF*$KINGLIEVABLE!!! and storming outside for a cig. Still, at 6-4, there was plenty of time for this team to make ammends.

After the Ravens loss, I think reality began to set in that, at 6-5, there really was a serious chance that this tremendously talented team might actually miss the playoffs. The Ravens loss was somewhat excusable given the circumstances (no Ben, Troy, Aaron, etc) and Dxon played well, but, a cold dose of reality nonetheless.

Well, after yesterday’s schizophrenic performance, the turkey is practically done. 6-6? Are you kidding me? Yes, this or that could happen and allow the Steelers to sneak in. Yes, its not over until yada yada yada, but, this team just does not seem to want it very much this year.

Perhaps they are tired. Perhaps all these youngsters have hit the rookie wall. Many key injuries certainly haven’t helped but this team is in the top ten in both offense and defense. How the heck are they 6-6? Long way from the pre-season confidence for an undefeated team, no?

I’m not a pessimistic guy. I still believe they can get themselves together, win out and make the tourney (granted, much assistance is needed now). Its time for the offense to show some killer instinct early and step on some throats.

Still scratching my head about the D. How can you spend 3-quarters playing lights out and then stand around and scratch your ass for the final 15-minutes? And yes, they did play lights out for the first 3Q.

Lets see all the rookies play for the next few games, give them some experience. Rotate Hines and Tone so that Sweed can play entire games.

I think you make a good point

Head coach is hard enough…Head coach in the NFL, I can only imagine. When you make large changes especially in a defense as complexed as LeBeau’s you have to understand the chain reaction. These guys have to trust the one next to them. If you screw the chemistry up too much you can start getting blown out instead of being in games. Guys that do that get fired.

The Head Coach is responsible for everything

That’s why when push comes to shove, the head man must step in and make changes as he sees fit, regardless of the OC, DC or other coach typically involved. Coordinators are given latitude within the comfort level of the head coach. Some HCs have no interest in getting involved in the detail, others are involved in everything. Bottom line is – you lose and you are going to get fired.

Some exceptions may occur, like Buddy Ryan being hired and retained by the owner before they hired Ditka. Ditka had no say in the defense and could not fire Ryan. Long term that is never a good situation. Chicago had a great team and never made it back to the SuperBowl. They under-achieved in the long term.

We will never know if Tomlin can or will force LeBeau to make changes in scheme or personnel. Since he is a defensive guy, you would think they collaborate and come to a consensus on most things. I can’t see the Rooneys setting it up where the HC is not really in charge of all aspects. The defensive secondary is now their worst unit. Tomlin has to answer for their performance as well as LeBeau.

The HC typically tells the ST coordinator who is ‘available’ for a given ST unit. Hines is not playing on KO squad, that is not going to happen. There is quite a bit of collective thought on these things. The HC is involved, how much depends on the HC and his confidence in his staff.

Sometimes you have to

When the guy who should be making the decisions, isn’t. I have great admiration and appreciation for everything LeBeau had done for us over the years but this has been one of his worst years, he has left me scratching my head this year. Granted we have had a lot of key injuries but we also haven’t reacted and adjusted to those as quickly as we should have. There is a lot of blame to go around but my finger points squarely at the front office. We had obvious problem areas coming into the season and they did absolutely nothing to address them. Hopefully they learn a valuable lesson.

Don't blame Mundy?

In the fourth quarter, Mundy managed to 1) knock a starting cornerback out of the game; 2) Get an unnecessary personal foul penalty giving the Raiders first and 10 on the Steelers 11 on the final drive; and 3) Was in the wrong defense and gave up the game-winning TD with 9 seconds left.

Good lord: the man was a wrecking crew the final 15 minutes. Against his own team.

A sandwich, a beer, and ...

…somewhere up there a bank account. Wooooo! Got some more.

Dolphins win next three to make the Jan 3 game for all the marbles. Joey Porter is in full throat all week. Woodley and Harrison go medieval on the Fish.

Big play in Foxboro is when Polamalu is running down sideline with interception, Belichek runs onto the field and grabs him by the hair, then Deebo bodyslams Belichek into Brady, Polamalu spins loose for the gamewinning TD and somehow the replay officials miss it all.

In Cincy, on first play from scrimmage, a Palmer fastball wedges into Ocho Nada’s facemask, the point stuck in his mouth rendering him ineffective for the duration.

Indy, I think this is where the whole script really teeters into unbelievability. It requires that Peyton Manning win a playoff game. Okay, let’s stretch credulity and go with it. Manning led Colts beat Chargers in playoff game (gagghhh!) …… Well, it could happen. And already the Greatest Game of All-Time, of ALL-TIME!! is the talk of the World, BREES, MANNING, SUPER BOWL, it is all pre-empted by a rare (arrghh-gagghh) loss by Manning in the playoffs to the luckiest, no talent, only-win-cause-the-referees cheat, STEELERS.

I try to play the role

but wasn’t sure if I had it in me after yesterday. Now I don’t feel bad cause that was money, even with the disclaimer(which I read), inspired indeed.

There is a difference

Between being wusses and just plain realistic. There is none here who wouldn’t love a 05 repeat but realistically that just isn’t going to happen. When was the last time the Browns made you nervous, I think that says it all. This team has been out of sync all year with the exception of a few quarters when all areas were playing at a high level. Love the Steelers, always have, always will, but this just isn’t their year.

It seems like there is only one play ready for 4th & inches; Ben push up the middle. Would it hurt to have an alternative? Did anyone not know what was coming there?

I was thinking don't have Ben put his head in there

if you look at the replay, BB slips as he starts to move forward, no slip, well then everybody might be smiling this week

Yep

They have at least one NCAA basketball tournament game there every year. Also our high school basketball tourney up to regionals is played there along with the Cintas Center in Cincy (home of the Xavier Muskateers).

Great Question

Answer: Because Ari-Ass loves the guy.

He stinks like rotting garbage and is not getting better. The StickMan can’t block, is slow, has no feet and gets drilled everytime he catches the ball – which is almost never.

He needs to go but why don’t they off him?? Because they have no FB on the roster. They throw him in in short yardage occassionally – watch him get beat inside almost evry single time. The guy gets me insane!!!! New bumper sticker….

Game of inches, but

I’m a native Pittsburgher who lives in the Cincinnati area. For the past several years, I’ve listened to Bungles fans talking about how they almost made the pick; they almost caught the pass; they almost stopped the other team in the 4th quarter; they almost won a Super Bowl one year. Year after year, they bitch about how injuries to key players did them in.

They’ve got a million excuses why they never make it to the top. In another month or so, I’m expecting to hear their latest cry-baby excuse (Carson Palmer got a hang-nail or some such thing). This is especially galling for those who still have ugly memories of the old days in Pittsburgh (pre-1970), when our team was a perennial NFL doormat.

But now we’re starting to hear the same kind of stuff from fans. Those inches that decide important games might as well be miles. I truly hope that we never sink to the level of shame prevailing for decades here in Bungle-Land. Let’s face it, our beloved Steelers just aren’t good enough this year. This might sound harsh but, right now, I have to say we truly suck. Anybody with a half-assed, bench-warming QB can beat us.

But on a more positive note, if you ever find yourself stuck in Cincy on a game day, drop by Martino’s on Vine Street, not far from the University of Cincinnati. This is one of the best out-of-town Steeler bars EVER. It’s totally decorated with Steeler memorabilia and nothing but Steeler fans, Terrible Towels and Steeler games on game days. It’s like you never left the ’Burgh. Check out their website: http://martinosonvine.com/

I don't think anyone is complaining

At least I’m not. I’m stating the fact that it’s a game of inches.

Regarding the wildcard spot...

If the Steelers win out (i.e. beat the Ravens and the Fins), both of those teams will fall behind the Steelers in the playoff picture. Thus, we are competing with the Jags, Broncos, and Jets for two spots. The Jags and the Broncos both currently have better records than the Steelers. So, the Steelers do not control their destiny at the moment. Because I don’t feel like looking at advanced tiebreakers, I will assume that the Steelers will need to be a full game up on both Jacksonville and New York (correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Steelers’ win against Denver gives Pittsburgh that particular tiebreaker). So, we need two of the following to happen: Denver drops a pair, Jacksonville drops a pair, and New York loses one.

New York has Indy and Cincy left. They’re probably going to lose one of those.

Jacksonville has Miami, New England, and Indy left. Again, they’re probably going to lose of those, and they might manage to lose two. The Jags don’t seem like a good enough team to hang with Indy or NE, or even Miami.

This leaves the Broncos. They also play Indy (convenient that Indy plays all of our wild-card competitors in the last four weeks, isn’t it?) Also, Philly looms on the schedule still. However, Denver has a better chance of winning three, IMO, than Jacksonville has of winning three or New York of winning two.

Of course, if the Steelers lose any more games this season, you can stick a fork in ’em, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89

Why can't Mendy bust a long TD run? We could use it.
