Call me crazy but I refuse to throw in the towel. It’s clearly a long shot for the Steelers to make post-season but not impossible. Nothing has gone right for them this season but something’s gotta give, right? I took a quick look at the many chain of events that must happen. More after the jump.
This analysis is based on the division leaders holding up…
#1: Obviously win out. Tough stretch coming up but with, hopefully, the return of Troy we’ll make the run. Winning out would eliminate Miami.
#2: While winning out we would need the Raven’s to also lose one more along the way, perhaps tonight on MNF. If we tie at 10-6 and with the split head-2-head, it would go down to the division and then conference record (both tied 3-3 Div & 7-5 Cof). I don’t know what the tiebreaker is after that. I’d much rather they just lose tonight and then again on the 27th.
#3: Jacksonville needs to lose two to finish 9-7. A tie at 10-6 gets them in with the better conference record. They have Miami at home, Indy at home, at NE and at Cleveland. Miami and NE still have a lot to play for and could beat the jags. Indy doesn’t have as much to play for but their still Indy and the Browns, well…
OR
The Broncos need to lose two to finish 10-6 and we’ll have the head-to-head tiebreaker there. They have a tough road too with games at Indy, home with division rival Oakland, at Philly who still has a lot to play for and then home to the Chiefs. I think there’s a possible two losses there…
Tall order but not impossible. This is the NFL and anything can happen. Just ask the Steelers.

Hines said the playoff's started Sunday
I hope he was wrong, but i feel like he may have been right. That 2005 run was a once in a lifetime. I think that was the only time in NFL history a team went on the road, won 3 straight and capped it off with a ring. It could be done, I wish it would be done but they are not giving me many reasons to stay upbeat and optimistic.
Go Stillers!
Are you people serious?
Why do you want them to go to the playoffs only to lose to any team we play? I’d rather throw the rest and get a good draft pick. This team can’t even hang with the mediocre let alone the best. They had their opportunity to get it done Sunday and start turning things around. Well, that didn’t happen. I’ll be very surprised if we beat the browns. They’re watching the game film and noticing that even if they play their third string they can air it out all day against us. This is friggin’ pathetic. Best of luck the rest of the way Stillers. I’m hopping off the wagon here and walking home. The next few weeks are going to be very tough to swallow. I’ll catch the black & Gold when the draft comes.
*Bruce I swear to god if you’re on this team next year…..

Well what do you want?
We can all join the optimist club and say well they beat this team and this team. Guess what, right now it’s time to get it done. Not only are we not getting it done, we’re getting done over by the worst of the worst. Not just once either. I’m a fan till the day I die but it’s insane to think that this team has any gas to make it to the playoffs. No motivation, no sense of urgency. Teams that do great in December usually do well in the playoffs. We’re heading backwards. I cheer for my team every single time they play smash. I’m not going to pretend like we’re going to win enough games to get in. We won’t. We have too many injuries and one too many idiots running squads. So you guys can get all hyped up about getting beat down by the brownies. I won’t. Quinn is going to have a field day against us. Just know he’s licking his chops to air it out against our handless D

“This team can’t even hang with the mediocre let alone the best”
Not sure what games you’re watching but the Steelers are literally 4 plays away from being 10-2. Pretty sure they also beat 3 of the “best” 2 in the AFC and 1 in the NFC.
That’s what makes this season so $%^&#! frustrating.

how can you even call yourself a fan. You are not and in fact the enemy. I pitty your comments. You dont’ deserve to be a steelers fan. To give up know means you have no loyalty to the steelers. when everything gets tough in this league you don’t put on a pair of panties and crawl in the corner. that is exactly what you are doing.

Welcome to BTSC. I see you have yet to ever make a post or break 50 comments. Glad to see you showing your loyalty to to the best Steeler Blog on the planet. As for my fanhood… You got that right. I don’t deserve to be a Steelers fan. “Show-ups” like you are much more entitled. You either wait until we start winning everything or losing to the raiders to make an appearance on here. Excuse me for being a realist and letting everyone know (newsbreak) this team isn’t going to the playoffs. I’m not giving up on my team but I’m not going to root for the to win. The season is shot but our draft pick is far from it. I’m looking at next year. Win some games and feel good about yourself whoop di doo. It won’t change the fact that we AREN"T GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!! Please give me that pair of panties so I can shove them down your throat and shut you up like you have been all season long. Get lost Yelloboo or make more of a contribution before you start talking like you run the place.

Mathematical observations?
Purple brownies gettin the goosegg 3rd Q. If they lose what do we need? I KNOW we have to Run the table. 10-6. no 9-7 scenerios. adversity doent Build Character , it REVEALS it.
I want a 10-6 Wildcard.
anybody got the stats? crybabys go study the draft
Ron Paul was Right.
There may in fact be some 9-7 scenarios
…but they are much too complicated for my small brain.
10-6. Not as complicated. If we win out…
We eliminate Miami in final game
If GB beats Ravens, we eliminate Ravens at home in two weeks
Jets are eliminated if they lose to either Atlanta, Indy or Cincy
Jaguars are eliminated if they lose two with games against Miami, Indy, or NE
Titans and Texans are already gone
All of this is very possible, in fact quite probable. One more
We tie Broncos and win tiebreaker by head to head if they lose two with games at Indy and at Philly left. Also quite possible.
So, in a nutshell. If Steelers win out, they almost certainly get a playoff game.

not 2 be annoying but if the jags dont lose 2 would they get the 1st WC and wede get the 2nd?
Should we root for SD to win west?

Complications
If Jacksonville gets to 10 wins, they outrank the Steelers.
Doesn’t really matter who wins the West, what matters is how many wins the second place team has. If Denver (or SD if they finish second) and Steelers are only two teams at 10, Steelers outrank Broncos on the basis of Steelers win over Broncos (Chargers, too) and get 5th Seed, Broncos 6th.
But, if there are three teams at 10, say Steelers, Broncos, Jacksonville, then the tiebreaker is conference record. Unfortunately, Jaguars will win that, and almost certainly Denver will get second, leaving Steelers out in the cold.
So, most important non-Steeler rooting agenda, root for Jags to lose at least twice. Or, not to lose at all and get to 11 wins. Mostly, though, it all means nothing unless Steelers win out.

Thanks for checking all my comments history. I don’t have the time to go back and look at all of yours. I am relatively new to BTSC so I apologize if I haven’t been that active. That being said I probably should not have posted that yesterday. I guess I just get upset when I read Steelers fans giving up on the season. Yeah. It is not going well right now. But we are playing for pride. I don’t want us to concede the rest of our games. When I read your comments – it seamed like you were rooting for the Browns to beat us. I just don’t agree with your mindset. Yeah I would like a good draft pick but I don’t want to lose to the Browns on Thursday.
Nobody WANTS to lose to the Browns any more than we WANTED to lose to the Chiefs, Raiders, or Bears. Given our play lately, it is “likely” that we could lose to the Browns. We keep giving the games away in the 4th quarter. I understand how socalsteelersfan feels. Even if we made it to the playoffs, we cannot play poorly and expect to win games once we got to the playoffs. So I understand that some fans are chalking this season up to a loss and are looking to next year. I have no idea what to expect from the Steelers for the rest of this season. I’m just looking to have a better record than the Ravens, at this point.
I love being the most-hated guy here. I love beating them while [their fans] are flicking me off. --Hines Ward
