Wake up call for the front office

As much as it sucks, you can't win the SB every year, you would like to at least be good enough to compete for it but some years it just doesn't work out.  Last year we got all the breaks and this year we are not, law of averages I guess.  One thing, that was obvious the front office thought after last season, is we are good enough, to do absolutely nothing(please don't even mention Ratliff) in the off season.  We signed some of our own but did we sign the right ones, some yes some maybe not but that is for another post.  What this season should be telling the front office is we are not good enough to sit on our asses and do nothing in the off season.  You want to know why the Pats have been so good for so long, look no further than their front office.  They may be a little down this year but that #1 pick for a player they were going to lose after the season anyway will be pretty sweet.  They make deals like that all the time and we do NOTHING(sorry for the caps, I was actually yelling at the computer as I typed it if that helps).  We have a couple of glaring areas that need overhauls, first and foremost the secondary.  Gay just flat out sucks, I have tried to stay positive for him but to many easy catches, falling down, he is an OK nickel put he is no starter, period.  Clark is better than people give him credit for.  He simply is not Troy(nobody is) he is good if Troy is there, he isn't strong enough to cover the other weak spots and still do his own job.  Clark tries to do this and that is why he seems out of position sometimes, he is trying to do too much.  Same goes for Ike, when Troy is in there he is lights out a shut down corner, without Troy he is hesitant because he can't count on TC to be where Troy would be, those split seconds got him beat all day against Oakland.  TC can cover for Clark but not for Troy, period.  So all that rambling means we need a corner and a safety.  They may already be on the team in Burnett and Mundy and at this point I say let them play(and from what T said, we may actually see that.) if not we need to either make some moves in the draft or FA.  This is not to say we need to go out and spend a crap load of money on the latest super star.  We just need a solid cover corner and a solid safety, there should be a vet or two out there that won't command a huge paycheck but are just losing out in a numbers game.  I say get them in here until the young guns develop.  With Fox, Ziggy, and Sonny we have some pretty big upside in the front 7, if someone is available great but no need to reach, although, a nose is needed if they don't sign big snack.  Offense, they have come a long ways but a lineman or two would be nice.  Once we are for sure out which realistically won't be that long(barring a complete turn around) play Sweed and if he doesn't get it then cut him so we aren't dealing with this next year.  If he doesn't then look for a big solid vet with good hands.  Seems like a big wish list but really isn't that big.  It may mean saying good bye to some long time favs but you have to ask yourself do you want nostalgia or SB's it is pretty simple.  Oh, and I saved the best for last.  Don't let a gift of an OC like Weis slip through our hands, we should already be talking to his agent working out the details and as soon as we are eliminated say bye to BA.  He would be perfect for the talent we have on Offense.  That is my rant, one last thing, the next time someone says what do you want a blowout every week, we are playing just good enough to win, please say >>>>> yea I want a blowout every week and a team that puts other teams away when they are suppose too.  Good enough to win is one play away from bad enough to lose.  We could be 10-2 and we could easily be 1-11 with just a few plays going the other way.

Good Rant.

I really hope our Front office is proactive about the OC situation, and don’t just settle for whoever. We need a Stud OC!

Too much talent to waste

Right now it is like putting regular gas in a engine that takes high octane, what a waste.

"Blowout Every Week"

As much as I would like a blowout every week it just ain’t gonna happen Darin. Got to tell ya kid, I’ve been watching the Steelers religiously every week since one Immaculate Sunday that was blacked out. The Steelers just don’t do blowouts.

If you’ve read my posts you see I’m always talking about “just beat them 3-2!” That’s because in 37 years of watching Steelers football I have seen way too many games like the last 4. Even during the winning seasons. I always say that “Steelers games are like a trip to the dentist.” It’s like a root canal every week. You hear the drill. You smell your teeth going up in smoke. You grip the chair with white knuckles. You pray the doctor used enough Novocaine and he gets the rotting root out of your mouth. At the end of the 3 hours of excruciating fear and frustration you hope you get a lollipop (or a W) and that the nurse has big boobs.

OK but look at what the Saints have done this season

Except for their narrow win against the Skins on Sunday, they’ve been dominating teams on the scoreboard. At least it’s good to know that this kind of consistency is still possible in the NFL today.

the saints are another story i believe

they had close calls versus miami, carolina, atlanta, redskins and i believe one other team that were saved by miraculous defensive touchdowns or something of the like. theyre very opportunistic on defense, not consistently dominating, imo.

Good enough to win is one play away from bad enough to lose.

good point, we may not need to blow out every week be we need to be more than one or two plays from defeat/victory

Steelers football is 60 mins.

Alright

So, no I don’t really expect a blowout every week and yes, I was a fan in the days of the IR albeit pretty young, 8 I think. Used to drive my Vikings crazy dad, well, crazy, especially after SB IX. I do though, remember the days when, for the most part, we had solid wins against the teams we were supposed to beat and played better than .500 against the teams that were more or less in the same league as us. My point was, once in awhile against a good team, a, we played just good enough to in is alright. When it is every week against teams the you should be beating by at least 10-14 pts. It just isn’t good enough. That is what has happened this year and really could have happened last year. The difference, aside from the injuries, was a very apparent attitude that we are going to win no matter what. I don’t see that this year and if anyone else says they have, I truly have to call BS. We have obvious weak spots on this team, most teams do, but we also have a lot of talent capable of winning multiple SB’s if the FO actually does something to improve those areas. We don’t need the next super stars at those positions, just good solid players who know their assignments, are in the correct positions to make plays, and who don’t fall on their butt every time a WR makes a cut. Anyway, I feel another rant coming on so I will end with that. It will be a mighty interesting off season and a good one I hope.

Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
