Baby steps
As doubtful I am that the Steelers will win a Wild Card spot this season, I'm equally hopeful about the future of this team. All that's necessary, in my view, is for the team to make a series of small changes--call 'em baby steps.
There's certainly nothing wrong with the core of this team. While every Steeler fan is banging his/her head on the wall by now, we don't need to throw out the baby with the bath water in fixing what's wrong. That's how you end up like the Detroit Lions or Tampa Bay Bucs.
So here's a look at what I think is working and what needs some work. Let's hear what you think.
Stuff that's working:
1) Big Ben: This guy is a winner and money in the bank--pure and simple. Sure he needs to develop some new ways to get it done, but there's no doubt this is the top guy you'd want calling signals for your team--even if you could choose from any QB in the league.
2) WRs: The Steeler receiving corps is among the NFL's best. To reach their full potential, though, they need a much more diverse offensive scheme. The Steelers aren't respected much for their running game or for short passing, especially to the RBs. This needs to change, and soon.
3) OL: Good and getting better, but perhaps one key player away from being excellent. Not sure whether we need to take an offensive lineman in next year's draft. It depends on how the younger guys (Stapleton, Urbik, Foster, Legursky, Hills, Shipley) pan out. Pretty clear, though, that we need to work on our run blocking to get more consistency with Mendy.
4) LBs: I don't buy that Farrior is finished or that Timmons is a disappointment. Both of these guys have been in there making important plays all season. And if you say the Steeler LBs aren't good enough, you're really saying the Steelers don't know how to draft LBs--a totally crazy idea. The LBs are suffering now mainly because of a banged-up line and poor play in the secondary.
5) Backup QB: Dennis Dixon is an exciting player with enormous upside. Get him more involved in the offense and help him develop. Ben won't always be healthy, especially the way he likes to run the ball (without any hook slide). But we might also get an opportunity during the off-season to trade Dixon to a team needing a good young QB. Maybe we can use a trade to fill one of our pressing needs. If Dixon can get some additional game experience before the end of the season (but hopefully only in mop-up roles), his stock on the trade market might go up considerably. It would be great to keep Dixon but the Steelers can find a lot of guys to back up Ben capably. In Pittsburgh, Dixon will never get to play anyway.
Stuff not working:
1) DBs: We need two guys back there besides Troy who can catch the ball and make occasional splash plays. Maybe we've got them on our roster already (Mundy, Lewis, Burnett?), but probably not. Don't forget that Troy was a top draft pick. I think we'll need another one for back there in 2010. Deshea, it's been a great run man, but I'm afraid you're done.
2) Defensive Line: The problems here are reaching critical mass, especially if Hampton, Smith, or both retire. All we've got left there now are some graying part-timers and Ziggy the rookie. Ziggy is gonna be a stud but we need some immediate help in the draft or via trade.
3) Special Teams: A huge disappointment and a factor in too many Steeler losses. We need to get some head-crackers in there and put an end to all this silliness. Logan is good enough as a return guy and he's worth the roster spot no matter what some people think. With even an ounce of creativity, we should also be able to find a way to use this guy's speed in the offense. It's not like we couldn't use another option on 3rd down plays.
4) Kicking: Jeff Reed is still a very accurate and dependable FG kicker. But his kickoff distance leaves much to be desired. So far, Daniel Sepulveda hasn't been the punter we thought we were getting when he was drafted. He's getting outkicked pretty consistently by opposing teams' punters. Not saying that Daniel needs to go; just that he needs to get better.
5) Matt Spaeth: Tomlin loved this guy as a college player, but it hasn't translated to the NFL. His roster spot is simply too valuable and he needs to go.
Well that's my prescription. Bombs away!!

Good Assessment
I more or less agree, although I have a couple of quibbles.
1) We do have the best LB corps in the league. However, we have got to come to terms with Farrior’s decline. While both Timmons and Woodley have had up and down seasons (although both have played very well overall I think), Harrison has been terrifying as usual, Farrior has been a big let down. He can still play, but he’s probably best served as a 2 down backer at this point.
2) I agree that we’ve basically got no return on our investment in Spaeth. However, I wonder how much of that has to do with the way he’s used and how much of it is on him. People complain a lot about Spaeth’s blocking, but he’s just absurdly tall – there’s simply no way for him to stand a guy up or push him back that’s six inches smaller, the leverage isn’t there.
There’s something to be said for him as a pass catcher, especially in the red zone. Outside of the Chicago game though, he’s been almost invisible there. This seems to be precisely the point you want Spaeth out there running a route though. As usual, my mind is simply boggled by this.
On an up note though, David Johnson has turned out to be a real gem of a 7th round pick. I don’t think anybody had any idea who he was coming out, but he’s been a big help to the run game and has caught a few balls. I kind of saw this as a throw away pick, but it’s turned out to be an ideal selection that late in the draft.

We only gotta win 3 after we Trounce the Clowns.
2 games @ HOME n a row
Remeber "89
…..and we havent gotten our asses kicked all year.
Ron Paul was Right.
amen brother..............
I posted about Sepulveda several weeks ago, and couldn’t find another soul to agree with me. At this point in his career he is very average.
it is nice to hear from someone................
who doesn’t want to fire every coach an replace 75% of the starting roster. I think a great deal of the commentary stems from us being so spoiled for so long with our success.
No doubt we have issues but is not time panic. A few bounces our way like last year and we would be 10-2. So goes the NFL.
On Spaeth
I think a healthy Sean McHugh (at less of a cap hit?) or a yet to be discovered FA beats out Spaeth for a roster spot in 2010.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Joe Burnett
Proved to be a major ballhawk in College, and we all remember that very impressive pick 6 he had in the pre season
I hope he does well. Tomlin wouldnt throw him there if he didnt think he was ready for it
Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever
IMO
timmons is a monster
farrior needs to go (quietly)
Dixon as #2 in Pittsburgh and NOWHERE else
I have a feeling that Burrnet, Lewis and Mundy will be just fine next year
Sweed will be big on Thursday against the browns and will have a great steelers career
Spaeth is crap
Draft a NT in Rd 1
Too early to trade Dixon...
We would not get good trade value for him yet. He’s ony seen the field once. No one is going to give up anything close to fair value for him after just one start. Give him some more time. We didn’t draft him specificly to trade him to the first bidder, in my opinion.

why willingly trade dixon?
Good back-ups are valuable, especially with a starter who’s prone to injury. If we get a can’t-miss offer from someone, then, of course, take the trade. But I wouldn’t let DD go to easily.
I agree...
I like Dixon before two weeks ago, believe it or not. I’m saying if we are going to trade him it’s too early. I wouldn’t trade him at all, personally.

Farrior
Should be a backup next year, one way or another. Some people have suggested that Timmons move to his position (mack? buck? I get them confused) calling the signals, and then have Fox or someone else (definitely need to draft an ILB this year in the early to mid rounds) take over Timmons old position. I think Fox has shown that he can handle it., and actually be better than Timmons when it comes to run support.
2) WRs: The Steeler receiving corps is among the NFL’s best. To reach their full potential, though, they need a much more diverse offensive scheme. The Steelers aren’t respected much for their running game or for short passing, especially to the RBs. This needs to change, and soon.
Translation: We need a different OC.
