One For The Other Thumb!
Steelers are Super Bowl XLIII Champions. Big Ben does it again, leading the Steelers down the field for a game-winning TD drive that began with a holding penalty.
The Steelers become the first team in league history to win six Lombardi Trophys. We'll delve into the particulars of what happened soon enough, but for now we celebrate!

That was the most clutch performance ever...
…by every role player. Even the O-line and special teams came through in the end.
Just a repost, Congrats Guys
Not sure if my other post went since I saw a message thread closed. Congrats to our old rival enjoy it, its my birthday gift to all of you:) great game. looking forward to our 2 or more games against you next year!

I Can't Decide
Either Ben or Holmes for MVP! I would still support Deebo, if not for that ridiculous penalty
There should be 2
Harrison for the first half
Holmes for the second
...things go well I might be showing my O face...O...O...O...you know what I'm talking about.
Holmes!
I just saw his catch again and cried out with joy / incredulous-ness.
can i get me some robert ethan up on this thread? i think we need to try and trade ben this offseason. he sucks.

I LOVE SANTONIO!!
Congratulations guys on winning the Super Bowl. I thought you were toast when Fitz caught that TD but that comeback cements the legacy of Ben as a Steeler and Holmes as a receiver.
Ignore the idiot Seahawks fans who are cheering for the Cards because they hate you guys, this was a hell of a game, and I truly congratulate you guys for such a remarkable win.
PLAYOFFS?!
MVP
We all say BB or Holmes, but think about it: without Deebo’s pick 6, the final would be 21-23 CARDINALS. Much love for Harrison tonight.
One final thought before bed
Gotta go to work early, so off to bed, one final comment, they needsrespect bens as much as they did kurts , kurt is a hof qb, but for god sakes we didn’t need to see his wife every5 seconds..

What the hell did he thank the President for???????????????
totally irrelevant, and managed to piss of the half of the country that didn’t vote for him. Dont mix politics with football!
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
Well, that's good then.
That way the Rooneys won’t be sad when they have to sell the team due to the estate tax when Papa Rooney shuffles off this mortal coil, cuz the tax dollars will be going to a good cause.
But seriously, thanks for a sweet game! :)
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

It’s because of Rooney that he could be an immediate potential candidate.

Shame About Deebos' Stupid Penalty
It would have been nice to see him as MVP..
but, time for celebration
agreed
Unfortunately in that moment he wasn’t up to the standards of professional football, let alone Steeler football. But I wish there were more love for Ben. He remains underrated by most of the talking heads. Love what Tony Dungy said about Ben being great the entire night.

dude, ridiculous sack total in college
his biggest weakness was that he was too weak / small to hold the point. he’s quick as hell. this season, he’s put on some pounds. No doubt, it would be unlikely he could fill Harrison’s shoes… but still, give the guy a chance.

I’m not even sure what happened in the last 8 minutes of this game.
I need to see replays….yes…replays….help…shock…help….steelers…world champs….wowowowoeoeoeooeoe1!!!!!!
L!
I am so drunk!
I drank around 15 cans of beer! And after the Fitz TD(2nd) I drank half of a SCOTCH WHIsky, I couldnt believe our D gave that TD, looked like our D last year, some big plays on bad times!
But, HOLMES, San Antonio, Saint Anthony? Santo Antonio, all languages, that catch was unbelievable so was his play on that drive, and some other ones, those screen ans short slants were working great!
Also, I love him, but what happens to Polamalu on the big game! He didnt play like we thought he would!
BRAZIL AND RIO DE JANEIRO ARE BLACK AND GOLD!!
1st half was good
1st half was very good
but he got sloppy in the 2nd half … he seemed to be confused by the Arizona defense.

The Steelers’ failure to convert those 1st and goals into touchdowns had me a little steamed, but damn Ben knows how to win a game!

The refs sucked, they were terrible, but they weren't the reason we lost. If anything it's Jerramy Stevens and the clock management that blew it.

BTW missed the game posts
anyone have game footage on Larry Fitzgerald’s first TD? To me it looked like the ball may have been trapped against the ground. They haven’t shown the angle again on the replays. Curious if anyone else saw that.

it still hasn’t even sunk in yet for me. i’m in shock. absolute shock. but i want to say this, and i’ll reflect on this more later when i’ve had more time, but when fitz scored his long td with just over 2 minutes to go, i wasn’t all that nervous. i was actually somewhat relieved that they just went ahead and scored and left us so much time. i wasn’t very impressed with arizona’s defense, and i have all the confidence in the big ben. i’m not going to say i wasn’t disappointed – i was. but i was also fairly confident that ben would make something happen.

Two words
Ben Roethlisberger
He is absolutely unreal. 19th time making a comeback in the 4th?!?!?! And now he does it on the biggest stage in football, going 88 yards in 2 minutes. Like Trent Dilfer just said on ESPN, Ben has just raised himself to elite status. He may not bring the stats, but he will definitely bring the W’s and thats all that matter.
SUPER BOWL CHAMPS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats from a Giants fan
That was a great game – this is the first time I remember back-to-back great Super Bowls. Enjoy being defending champs for the next year – I know I have for the past 12 months. Oh, and thanks for banishing the Cowboys from the “most Super Bowl championships” trivia answer. May they never again climb that mountain.
They won't
As long as Jerry Jones is the GM…
"....It is more about them than it is about the team. Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can’t do it. I want winners!" - Mike Singletary
Random Rings
I like to think about the guys who, because of a somewhat random circumstance, have just earned a Super Bowl ring, in what may have been their only chance. Like Tommy Maddox in 2005/06.
This year, there are a few players, who struck gold on what may be their only chance:
Mitch Berger (face it, he earned it)
Byron Leftwich ( he also earned it in a few games )
and …. who else? who else got the ring by good circumstances?
retkovsky
or however you spell our furniture mover/long snapper’s name ;) he was a little rough in his first game or two, but as we now know, you can’t win super bowls without long snappers….
bailey
undrafted free agent, had at least one super key tackle on coverage – I think it was breaston he dropped for no gain at all on a punt
yea
that was on the free kick after the safety. turned out to not matter, but i was pleased that baileys tackle gave them a long field to navigate

BTW - Seattle could learn from both the Cards and the Steelers
Both Tomlin and Wisenhunt talked about how its a sixty minute game. So nice to see too teams fight to the very finish and never give up. Amazing. Amazing AMAZING game.
Yeah
Even Holmgren still seemed to be bitter during his analysis of the game. I would expect him to be over it by now. Bottom line is that his team didn’t overcome the adversity that they had. Both of the major penalties in the SB XL were on first down. They had ample opportunity to overcome.

When Steelers went down, I saw Ben putting on his helmet- just going to work… I said, “That’s ok, the Steelers just need to get going on offense”… not at all sure, just a feeling. Thank you Ben for being awesome and Santonio Holmes for an amazing catch…
Int return by Harrison right there with Franco’s miracle. STEELER HISTORY!!!!
INCREDIBLE JOB STEELERS!!!!

that was a great game and a well-earned championship.
hopefully we’ll even it up with the trophies next year!

sorry bud
Hey good luck n all but Tony Romo’s a choke….
We got the repeat down :)
Totally agree
Santonio had a great game, but Ben was the MVP. Warner played great, but he didn’t make nearly as many tough throws as Ben did. Play after play after play after play. Love his interview with Steve Young and Boomer where the two of them are just giving him the love.

So clutch.
In three years, maybe 2, he will be the unquestioned best active qb in the game. I really believe that.
yup
definitely in 3-5 years. We’ll see, Manning still has some good years left. Ben’s best years are still ahead of him though. I’m writing just as much in my post which should be up soon.
by Michael Bean on Feb 1, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions
Are they ahead of him?
I love Ben, and I think he is truly underrated.
However…
There is no way that Ben plays as long as Peyton Manning. Ben is injury prone as a 26 year old, and Manning just suffered his first real injury at age 30. No, Manning could last until he is 40, a la Favre, or Warner, but I will be surprised to see Ben make it to 35.
I think that Ben probably has another Super Bowl run in him, but I can’t say with 100% certainty that his best years are in front of him (also, how much better can they get?)
It will be hard for ben to have too long a career
if he continues to get sacked 47 times a year and hit three times that much. But there is not doubt that he has become the most clutch QB in the game right now. One of the stats that was given was that a full 1/3 of his victories this year are 4th QRT come from behind victories. That’s insane.
by SteelerBuddha on Feb 1, 2009 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
in all due respect
impossible to speculate. ben has had no ‘football’ injuries outside of one or two concussions. he’s a really f’n unique physical talent that just responds in the moment. not sure its wise to project how his body may or may not respond down the road

Psyched about this win
I’ve been a Steelers fan since youth. I remember the Super Bowl victories of the 70s. It has been truly sweet to see the franchise pile up two more Lombardi trophies.
I’ve been following this blog for a little while, but I only signed up for the community tonight. I guess I was kind of superstitious — didn’t want to change my routine of watching the game and following the live blogging from the outside. But now, I’m all in.
Way to go Steelers, Way to go!
For all those who questioned Ben...
who hated on Ben, who wanted him benched….
GET THE F*CK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
Holmes may be the MVP, but Ben was the X Factor…the most IMPORTANT player on the field. He’s done it before….he won it tonight….and he’ll do it again in the future.
By the way…I did predict tonight’s score….
Pittsburgh – 6
Arizona – 0
One for the other thumb…the NFL’s elite franchise.
James Harrison DUH!!!!!!
I use to be a die hard Steelers fan until they started with all the cheap shot hits. I hated to see them go by the way of the Ravens and Eagles mentality. Only the present day Steelers could have a player that breaks a super bowl record for a run and then cannot muster enough class for the rest of game before showing his real colors. Duh !!! He should have been rejected.

Real Class.
Please
That’s not typical of Steelers players. I was very disappointed in it too, but no way is that typical recent Steelers teams.

Tomlin > Cowher
I know its only his second year and cowher did some incredible things but…. A cowher team could NOT have won the game last night. They would not have been able to handle the emotional swings, specifically losing the lead with 2 minutes left. I think back to when Neil threw his second pick to larry (who?) brown and he returned it to the six yard line:
Cowher put his down as if to say “we can’t overcome the shortcomings of our QB today”
Tomlin would have got in the D’s face and told them to hold them to 3
My point is not to bash cowher but highlight that the steelers have something CRAZY special in tomlin, and we could be having a few more of these threads in the years to come.
cowher put his *head* down
p.s my name was made after the philly game

Congrats Steeler Nation!
Cards fan through and through, you guys did a great job and everyone who’s a Cards fan was saying it, too much time left on the clock for Big Ben.
I know the officiating was terrible on both sides but the two that as a Cards fan that I’m belly aching over:
1) Would have liked a final review of the Warner fumble. Even if the final review stuck with the same call of a fumble, I still would have liked to hear it in an official way.
2) Harrison should have been ejected for the PF.
I know none of you want to hear that, but he punched a guy, and then shoved him to the ground after the player started to get up from being punched. I don’t know how that was only a 15 yard penalty, because they were sticking to “calling it tight” all night, so any other game he would be out.
Your thoughts, honestly?
Honestly I think the last play should've been reviewed-but I still think that looked like a fumble.
However, although Harrison’s play was stupid and not a classy thing to do, we didn’t see what the Cardinal player did before Harrison pounded him. And to “Think” who posted above that he’s no longer a die hard Steeler fan because of the brutality, where has he been. Steeler football has always been rough and tough and a bit on the nasty side. Besides that was some redemption for the DOZENS of missed holding calls #92 had to endure all year. My honest thoughts are that you guys played an amazing game and are deserving of a whole lotta praise, but all the ref stuff evens out in the end.

Two things
I agree that he probably should have been ejected, but since you scored the go ahead TD even with him on the field, it doesn’t seem that his non-ejection was a factor in the outcome.
As for the fumble, I can understand your point. The officials were apparently asked after the game and verified that it was the correct call. But, I can understand why you would have wanted it announced prior to the kneel down.
Anyway, thanks for keeping it classy. I was very impressed with your Cards. They were very resilient.
by WolfpackSteelersFan on Feb 2, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions
Ditto on both counts
I would have preferred the last fumble be reviewed before the allowed the final kneel-down.
I think Harrison deserved to be ejected. I haven’t yet reviewed the whole game, but there were several uncalled holds against Harrison; things were getting chippy on both sides; and, while the evidence against him was clearly displayed in the broadcast, we did not see what led up to his behavior. I’m not a shrink, but I suspect he just got fed up and retaliated for the beating he was taking all night. The guy has anger issues. He lost his cool. Having written all that, absolutely none of it excuses what he did. I don’t care if another player claims his momma wears combat boots, he should not retaliate in an illegal manner.
I admire hard play. Illegal play sucks.
Thanks to Varmint, WolfpackSteelersFan, and HighSchoolSteeler for your opinions
I think our OL broke down on that final play, maybe because they were thinking KW was going to toss it up quickly, but it seemed like I saw three guys standing around during that three man rush, and your guy (can’t remember his name, sorry about that) was playing 60 minutes of football and came around and made the play.
Great job on his account, but where the hell was that same amount of focus from our OL? I think it shows that while we made it to the prize fight, there is still a lot of focus and discipline that needed to be beat into us from the school of hard knocks.
I think there’s nothing but positives from this game for both teams in the long run.
last fumble
was reviewed…all “questionable” calls are reviewed within 2 minutes of each half automatically. Fumble was reviewed and confirmed.
Pittsburgh Fans
We never give up on the Steelers and the Steelers never give up. Ben, Harrison and Holmes and Tomlin you are the greatest. I also can’t forget Troy in the Raven’s game.
Oh, by the way-America’s Team, move over, you’ve been replaced by the Steeler Nation!
