Real Concern: Steelers with one year left on their contracts

List courtesy of Fanhouse:

RB Willie Parker, LB James Harrison, WR Hines Ward, TE Heath Miller, C Justin Hartwig, S Ryan Clark, CB Deshea Townsend, DE Brett Keisel, NG Casey Hampton, K Jeff Reed.

No, this is not a list of the most valuable Steelers not named Ben Roethlisberger.  These are players who have one year left on their current deals.

There has been a lot of talk recently about who the Steelers will resign and draft this year.  The fact is, this list of players will determine who gets resigned and drafted more than anything else.  BMac and Nate (hopefully) have replacements waiting in the wings and are not integral to Steelers success anyway.  But the above referenced list is a who's who of contributors to more than one Super Bowl run.

Guys like BMac, Nate, and probably Starks will not stay with the Steelers because the Rooneys will want to spend some money on these players before the season when, as we all know, they are as good as gone if unsigned.

The 'Stache has no particular inside information, but here are my thoughts anyway.  Willie and Keisel are out the door for sure.  Willie's getting up there for a speedy RB and Keisel is the weakest, although youngest, D lineman.  Hines and Deshea are out unless they accept less lucrative contracts then their current deals.  Miller, Reed, and Clark will all stay considering they are great values and the front office will do their best to keep them.  Hampton and Hartwig?  Not sure.  I think Hartwig's future depends on where we go in the draft (if it's Mack, he's gone).  Hampton should be a keeper, but with LeBeau's time running short, Tomlin may be thinking of the move to a 4-3.

Wild Card: James Harrison.  Steelers are ususally reluctant to resign LBs over 30, but this guy has had the best 2 yr span of any Steeler linebacker EVER.  Also, he's a workout beast and sat the bench for years, meaning he's taken less wear and tear.  Also, Farrior received an extension at a similar age to where Harrison will be at the end of next season.  But the Steelers do not lose sleep over replacing outside LBs.  Whatever direction management goes with James, I'm sure it will be the correct one.

Talk amongst yourselves.

It would be nice to keep Harrison, but he’s the only guy on that list that will be worth a large contract, probably sooner rather than later.

We need Reed because he’s the only one that can kick at Heinz.

Obviously the DL is only going to become a bigger issue, and Keisel and Hampton aren’t going to be extremely valuable in 2010, even if we do resign them. We need to draft some guys on the DL in both of the next 2 years.

Parker’s gone, and most of the other guys are older vets who will get small contracts or leave/retire.

good post

Ill save most of my thoughts. Agree on most points.

Think you’re wrong about Ward. Not entirely, but there will be middle ground worked out to keep him and I’ve never been so sure of something I have no control over. James Farrior got 5!! year extesion older than Hines. WITH Timmons in the wings.

I’m leaving aside loyalty and leadership and all that too, just to be clear.

Hines can flat out still play. Not sure why that’s not crystal clear to folks. 80 catches, 1000 yards, 7 of Bens 17 TDs. He’s not a break away guy; he’s Ben’s go to guy in the slot. He still runs awesome routes; still is tougher than every guy playing him on defense. He can PLAY!

He’s going to get some cash up front I’d bet and then some back loaded years that he may or may not earn.

Let me give one point of referrence that should hopefully convince some that Hines isn’t going to have to accept pennies here. A very well run team by the name of the Indianapolis Colts paid Marvin Harrison a 7 year 67 million dollar extension at age 31. Hines Ward is 32.

furthermore

You think we’re going to have the locker room tension that goes along with not signing a guy like HInes? After a Super Bowl? In a year where we’re in GREAT shape to repeat personnel wise. Just makes zero sense at all to me whatsoever that any one can think we’re not going to lock him up for at least 3 years.

by Michael Bean on Feb 11, 2009 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

Harrison hasn't performed well since he signed the contract granted he was injuried almost all of 07'

Before the contract in his first 9 years he averaged…
93 catches, for 1243 yards, and 11 touchdowns per season…

After the contract in his last 4 years he has averaged
64 catches, for 849 yards, and 6.5 touchdowns….

And he shot somebody, “Mo Money; Mo Problems” as Biggie used to say.

Having said that Hines has more locker room impact and I also think Hines will have a much less noticable decline in his career stats as the reason he was always succesful without having to have superior offensive talents.

Hines

I agree. HInes won’t have to play for pennies. He may even get an offer commensurate to the one he is under now. But I do not think he will get a pay raise with the Steelers, especially if they think Sweed is legit. I don’t think HInes is in decline, but he will be after two more seasons and Hines is unlikely to sign a one year extension.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Feb 11, 2009 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

Harrison will be signed this offseason for sure to avoid a potential issue next year during the season and all the media speculation it would bring to next years offseason.

I think Hines Ward will be offered an extension that will keep him in a Steelers uniform for life and will be front loaded and actually help our cap situation, rather than hurt it.

Heath Miller is going to be signed to good money as well this offseason and I don’t see the Steelers lettting him walk. I would expect him to be in the range of the top 10 tight ends in the league.

Jeff Reed has to be signed too, I dunno where we are getting all this money, but like you said these are crucial players that must be re-signed.

Willie Parker could be the odd man out, we just might not have enough money to keep him in the black and gold.

I also think somebody might get franchised out of the rest of the guys listed. Possibly Hartwig, Hampton, or even Reed or Miller.

Pretty much right on

Harrison will be extended this off-season, before we make any other moves. Hines will get a retirement deal, if it was me it would be mostly incentives at the back end. I think a fair value would be to trade his 1 year at 5.8m for 4 at around 16m with some more to be earned in incentives if he is still able to stay on the field and put up similar #’s to this year.

Reed will have a low # so he may get the tag but I think he’ll be reasonably cheap for a long term deal.

Miller will priority #1 next off-season unless they decide not to do much spending on the O-Line and redo him this year.

Foote is gone. Clark I would try to keep if it’s me, but we may not be able to afford it, we need better players behind him just in case.

Hampton I’d see where he’s at next off season, hate to see him leave but he is the type of guy you don’t want to overpay for on C$3 because his weight and age could catch up in a hurry. Keisel I’d like to have if we can afford him but if it’s between him and Clark I’ll take Clark.

by SteelerFan Ben on Feb 13, 2009 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

I mostly agree

As far as Reed goes, I could see us letting him walk. Kickers are kickers, and as great as Reed is, we won’t overpay a kicker. If he plays up to the level we expect, he may want to look at a nice payday.
Willie will most likely be let go, we did draft Mendenhall with a first rounder after all, and unless he has bust written on his face at the end of next season, FWP will be gone. But he could stay on with a smaller contract, maybe. The market for thirty year old speed backs was never good, especially with all these young backs tearing up the league, its looking worse than ever.
Keisel will have to have a very productive, healthy year to be put into the mix. But with continuity our strongest assett, maybe the FO looks at bringing him back in anticipation of Hampton and Aaron Smith’s retirement/ free agency looming.
Deshea could come back, I don’t see him wanting a huge deal, plus he’ll be a plus 30 year old corner. Their market isn’t much better than a RB at that age.
If Harrison doesn’t get a deal this offseason, I think the chances are slim to none we’ll bring him back. Despite the fact he is what a Steeler should be, tough, scary, hard working, aswell as a great player. He will want some compensation for the years of hard work he put in to get to where he is, and I don’t really blame him.
Hampton is tricky. He’ll be a tough call for the FO. An aging player who hasn’t fallen off talent wise, and does a job very few can do. Plugs the gap and eats up 2 or 3 blockers. I’ve always said I thought he’d end up in (I don’t even know if I should say this) Dallas. I know, I know. But every Texas kid grows up dreaming of playing for the Cowgirls. I called it with Zach Thomas about 4 years ago, not saying I’m prophetic or anything, but Casey always talks about how much he likes playing in Texas, with his family there. I hate to think about this, but it’s plausible.
Heath and Clark are the only two that I can say I believe 100% we will have back, but who knows.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Feb 11, 2009 12:32 PM EST reply actions

My first instinct when I saw the list without even reading any further was that Hampton and Townsend are gone after next year, all the rest get re-signed. After reading further down I do agree that Willie will be gone too. Other than that I anticipate them getting all the rest under contract, if not by extending this year (Harrison, Ward, for sure, possibly others), then by signing after next.

I think Hamptons play has declined a good bit, will be even further down after this next year, and Tomlin was not happy about him coming in t camp so out of shape. I just don’t see him coming back after next season. As for Deshea, I think he’ll retire after one more season.

by worldtrip on Feb 11, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions

If Hampton is going to be gone we need his replacement – now. Our defense without Hampton could fall apart fairly easily. Hoke can hold up but is not as dominant. Our defense has been so impressive because they don’t even bother trying to stop the run, it just happens. Without Big Snack that doesn’t happen. We can’t pick up a NT like him this year in the draft (closest would be Raji, and it ain’t going to happen), so then what?

Maybe we can sucker a team into a shaun rogers like trade – that has worked out very nicely for the Browns.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

I don’t have that answer. I agree the Steelers will need to pick someone up. They have this year and next year to find someone. I just don’t think he’ll be back with the Steelers, and maybe not with anyone.

I agree with you. He’s slipping and he’s too big a guy to play old.

Terrence Cody?

The DT from ‘Bama. Or is he not conditioned enough for the NFL. I heard he was 400 lbs. when recruited. The only reason they gave him a scholarship is because he got down to 380. He’s the best space eater I can think of in college. Not to mention maybe the best eater period.

Gabe Watson

Is a free agent. He was with the Cardinals last year. Similar size, he’s young and available. I could see that happening. He’s our type of free agent player. About to enter his prime with playing experience.

Ward will retire a Pittsburgh Steeler

Write it down. The front office already made a colossal error with Hall of Famer Rod Woodson and will not travel down that road again. It will not be a sympathy signing either. Hines is coming off his best statistical season since 2003. He is the unquestioned leader of our team. He is the greatest Steeler wide receiver of all time. He is a future Hall of Famer. He bleeds black and gold (He even said it after the Superbowl). Hines is my all time favorite Steeler so I may be biased but I think he deserves another contract. If you don’t believe me, go ask Keith Rivers, Ed Reed or Bart Scott.

by Dr Del on Feb 11, 2009 12:58 PM EST reply actions

Good Stuff

I may be a little older than some here and remember vividly the Steelers of the 70s and how much we loved them as kids/teenagers. Hines Ward is an absolute throwback as a football player, forget that he plays WR. He loves the game, plays his ass off and does all the little things with gusto. He doesn’t fake it and doesn’t take plays off. That is very rare in a player with tenure, money and a rep amongst his teammates – he could get away with not going 100% but he doesn’t.

I always loved Lambert, Ham, Greene, Bradshaw and the rest but Hines Ward is in that list for me – something I never thought might happen in this day and age. I hate a lot of things about pro sports and some things about the NFL. Hines Ward transcends all that is ugly, lazy, bitter and selfish about pro sports or the NFL. He can play on my football team anytime, anywhere – and could probably play 2 or 3 different positions if he played in the old days of guys going both ways.

That said – my best guess regarding the list above:

Ward and the Steelers will make sure he retires a Steeler. It is unfathomable that he doesn’t finish in the Black and Gold. Say 2-3 year extension?

Parker, Keisel, Hampton and Reed only return at the right price. Of these, I say Keisel and Reed are most likely to return after examining their situation. Hampton may eat himself out of a job and out of the NFL before too long. It happens with the big boys if they don’t have the discipline and desire to continue playing. Although Parker has some great moments and memories as a Steeler – he is imminently replaceable as a running back. He is a poor blocker and poor pass receiver, doesn’t have a lot of wiggle and doesn’t break tackles. He is limited and that is not a good position to have such limits. RBs in the NFL are asked to do many things – he can’t and that’s why he isn’t in the game on 3rd downs too often. His ego won’t allow him to take a small paycheck, so I think he is gone.

Hartwig and Townsend will be gone – either of their choosing or the team’s. Townsend could stay if he plays cheap.

Miller and Clark would be hard to let go of. They are both good players who have 2-3 good years left for sure. They fit and are needed and would be hard to replace.

Harrison is the biggest question mark. As others have stated, he has played at the highest level for 2 seasons and is going to want big $$$ after his many years of struggle. Although it’s hard to say, I would guess the Steelers figure they can replace him like they did with Porter and everyone else. They keep finding and teaching great defensive players to play OLB, especially on the weak side.

Next big question – how long does LeBeau stick around??? That will have more to do with the personnel make up of the defense than anything else….

A lot of good points

One thing with Miller. Should next year be uncapped, it’ll help out the FO in keeping Miller be a restricted FA instead of a UFA. So we will be compensated should a team over pay for him, match the contract offer or have him play at the tender offer.

As far as the rest, FWP is probably gone, though he may stick around and take paycut a la his mentor Bettis, but i doubt it.I think clark is less of a sure thing because safety’s are relatively easy to find on the cheap (look no further than signing Clark to replace Hope). Hampton is gone, Keisel is young and their isn’t a high price for 3-4 DEs, so he’ll be signed for a moderate contract. Same with Reed. Ward Retires a Steeler guaranteed. Townsend on will be gone unless he stays for very cheap. Hartwig should be replaced by then. I think Harrison gets a big extension this year for about 3-4 years.

by _ET_ on Feb 11, 2009 8:46 PM EST reply actions

Hampton

It seems to me that with all the discussion of the Steelers drafting OL in the first round, we might well see them sign their free agents and take a NT or DE in the first round if the talent is on the board. It seems to me that for the most part out system is predicated on looking two years ahead with talent. Its what we did at Linebacker – and it seems to have worked. I think its what we have done at safety – and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Clark replaced by either Smith of Mundy.

The only place where we don’t have real viable back up talent is on the D line. As much as we love and trust our D-line we need to think of their replacements this year, not next year.

by SteelerBuddha on Feb 12, 2009 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Really like Mundy

If it wasn’t for an ankle(?) injury in preseason that kept him out a while, he may of taken Anthony Smith’s spot on the roster. And possibly a little playing time from Ty Carter.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Feb 12, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Parker

Maybe I missed something, but I thought Willie Parker was making less than $2M a year. With his struggles this year, and our OL struggles likely carrying over to next year (at least to an extent), I don’t see why he’d be taking a pay cut. Also, I really haven’t seen anything to make me think that Parker has a big ego. Of course, maybe I just remember his telling the Bus something like “Whatever I am as a running back, which ain’t much, is thanks to your help.” That was in SB XL.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Feb 12, 2009 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Retirement Home

I have my fingers crossed that Ward & Townsend retire here.

Let the following will play out the final year of their contracts:
FWP, Hartwig, Clark, Townsend, Keisel and Hampton.

Drafting a replacement for Hampton (especially) is more of a priority than LT. Hampton with his conditioning habits will not age well.

Play wait and see with FWP,Keisel, Clark and balance them against the developing players. I expect Stapleton to succeed Hartwig.

Re-sign Jeff Reed and Heath Miller this offseason so there are less worries next.

As for Harrison it depends on how well Davis has progressed doesn’t it? If he hasn’t, then sign him now 4-5 years(Davis has a 3 year deal). However if Davis is Woodley good or close to, then what? Unless you want to take into account that Deebo is as good against the run and probably slightly better in coverage than Foote and you make the decision now that some time in the near future you move Deebo inside, bench Farrior and have Davis-Harrison-Timmons-Woodley as your starting LB’s which would be a grim prospect for any backfield.

by Marvin, The Paranoid Android on Feb 12, 2009 8:07 PM EST reply actions

Bruce Davis is no James Harrison nor will he ever become one. He may end up being a serviceable player ala Haggans but I think total bust is more likely.

James Harrison is the #1 reason for our #1 pass defense and made one of the top 2 plays in Franchise history a while playing for 1.5m. The Rooneys will take care of him.

by SteelerFan Ben on Feb 13, 2009 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

Don't Agree

Harrison was just named NFL defensive player of year in only his second year starting in the league and you want to see if he can be beat out by an unproven and untested rookie? Are you serious? Bench Farrior? He was voted into the Pro Bowl this year, led the team in tackles for the third straight season, and just signed a contract extension this year. I’m glad your not Director of Football Operations for the Steelers.

by Dr Del on Feb 12, 2009 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Glad I don't have to make these decisions

But, my take, FWIW…

Willie and Keisel are out the door for sure.

I am not so sure. Wille loves the Steelers — and the Rooneys — since they “discovered” him while he was toiling in obscurity in college. 2 years ago he led the league in rushing. We’re not giving up on him yet.

Finding unselfish guys to play in the 3-4 is hard. Finding guys that every now and then chip in with sacks is harder still. Unless there is an injury we don’t know about, Keisel is staying.

Hines and Deshea are out unless they accept less lucrative contracts then their current deals.

Agree with Deshea — disagree with Hines. I believe he will retire a Steeler, and I can’t imagine him not coming to terms with the Steelers.

Miller, Reed, and Clark will all stay considering they are great values and the front office will do their best to keep them.

Agree on Miller and Reed. Not convinced about Clark. He’s a nice player, and I love his hitting. But we let Hope go, and he seemed like a more intergral part of the defense… then we got better without him.

Hampton and Hartwig?

I’m not sure either. They could both be gone, or they could get new deals… that’s a hard call…

but with LeBeau’s time running short, Tomlin may be thinking of the move to a 4-3.

Doubt it. Tomlin coached the 4-3 / Tampa 2 because he was hired by Dungy, and that’s what Dungy did. It worked and he went to a Super Bowl with it. He stayed with the 3-4 here because he stayed with Dick LeBeau, and that’s what he used. We went to the Super Bowl with it. I don’t think Tomlin has any emotional attachment to the 4-3, and the Steeler’s uncanny ability to draft and train Linebackers makes the 3-4 the best defense for us.

Wild Card: James Harrison.

This is a wild card. I do not get the sense that James Harrison cares whether he wears the Black and Gold or purple and black, or any other color. Why should he have any allegiance to the team that cut him — twice?

Harrison playes hard and is a great talent. But he very well might look at his career as a lot of lost time he has to make up, and want to get paid somewhere. There is a long list of teams that need a linebacker so badly that they would out-pay the Steelers.

I love watching Harrison eat up QBs — and I would HATE to see him play us twice a year… but my gut tells me he won’t be a Steeler for much longer…
