Julius Peppers?

According to ESPN Peppers wants out of Carolina but will only approve of a trade to 4 teams.

a person close to the player said Wednesday that the impending free agent wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys or three other unnamed teams, two of them in the NFC.

so there's one AFC team on the list if I'm reading that correctly. The AFC team is going to have a leg up in trade talks since the Panthers will want Peppers out of their conference.

They go on to say that

Interested in playing in a 3-4 scheme instead of Carolina's 4-3 defense, Peppers wouldn't say last week if he would hold out of if the Panthers place the franchise tag on him and then don't trade him.

So if we assume that the AFC team is a 3-4 team, and likely a contender, there is a good chance it is either the Steelers, the Pats, or possibly the Ravens.  I'm probably stringing too many "maybes" together, but it is an interesting possibility. The Cowboys don't have a first rounder this year so they would be at a big disadvantage in trying to make a trade for Peppers.

For reference, in a similar situation last year, Jared Allen was traded for a 1st and two 3rd round picks.

What would you give for Peppers, if anything, assuming we could sign him to a halfway reasonable contract.

An interesting idea

but unfortunately highly unlikely. Peppers will want waaay too much money for the Steelers to want him. And, he isn’t the right body-type for a 3-4 DE. I doubt he’d want to put on 30 pounds and be mainly responsible for drawing double-teams. He’s too good a natural pass-rusher, and the Steelers just can’t use a big-time OLB right now.

But it’s be AWESOME to have a guy like him on the team.

He wants to play LB

I am not that keen on seeing him and Demarcus Ware line up on the same team either.

Wow

for some reason that rings true to me, and I can’t say quite why.

Maybe it’s because i fear for Ben’s welfare in Peppers AND Suggs are both chasing him on the same play..

by tobiathan on Feb 18, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

The ravens and steelers both have too many homegrown players to resign that they won’t pay Peppers the outrageous sum he’ll want.

If you guys get Peppers

I will be afraid to play you guys. But like you guys said, he is too much money. I’’ll feel sorry for you guys if Ravens, the best 3-4 team in my opinion, take Julius.

I almost forgot that we beat the Ravens 3 times last year and in 4 out of our last 5 matchups…

Agreed

Didn’t they rank above the Steelers in almost every defensive stat? I wish our 3-4 defense was as good as theirs.

He was referring to the last two minutes of crunch time

If you look at the three Steelers-Ravens games this year, the Ravens vaunted 3-4 shut us down this year while our 3-4 let them drive for winning touchdowns. To top it all off, Ed Reed picks off a pass and goes to the house to end the debate.

The po-po. A friend of mine whispered that word in front of a cop once, and the guy must have had supersonic hearing, cause the next thing I know the cop’s yelling at him, and making him turn out his pockets. I was just a witness to the scene though; I’m about as bad ass as a kitten. It was one of those “You had to be there moments”, but still very funny.

We don`t need him.

I am perfectly fine with our linebacker unit as is. Rayder K, are you serious? The Ravens used to be the best 3-4 defense. We had the top overall defense the last two years and the Ravens are about to lose a linebacker or two. Plus we owned them 3 times. Game, set, match.

by SteelerDomination on Feb 19, 2009 2:36 AM EST reply actions

To be fair

Their defense could be on-par with ours, their offense is just lousy while ours is semi-competent.

by Romain El 82 on Feb 19, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I’m not sure why everyone is so defensive (sorry) about this. The Ravens certainly have a respectable 3 and 4. We just have better D-backs. Our non super-star players are better than their non super-stars.

by Varmint on Feb 19, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

The ravens defense is often very good. Saying their were the first to be great with the 3-4 and have historically been better with the 3-4 is just annoying. Saying that the steelers defense has been “not so good” in other years while ignoring that the ravens defense has also been “not so good” is also annoying.

It’s also very insulting to anyone who cares about their team.

What? Because my panties aren’t in a bunch, I don’t care about the team? Tell you what… if you’re that annoyed by this guy bragging about his Ravens, I’ll bake you some cookies while you warm up some milk. We’ll get you feeling better in no time.

In the meantime, I prefer to think of this as a classy site. So, why don’t we just argue the point instead of attacking the poster?

by Varmint on Feb 20, 2009 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

To the first paragraph, sorry, didn’t mean it to come out that way. I care about my team like I care about my city, or say, my car. If someone steps in and says something completely wrong about something I care about it I think I have the right to get ticked off about it, and you have the right not to.

As to the second paragraph: because the poster clearly has no interest in arguing or debating, he just wants to rile feathers. I treat trolls like trolls, and I treat someone who wants to bring something useful to the conversation accordingly.

Just so you know...

The Ravens ran a 3-4 (officially) for 3 years (2002-2004). Not in 2000,their best defensive year, when they ran a 4-3 with Sam Adams and The Goose up the middle. Ray Lewis also refers to the three years in the 3-4 as his LEAST favorite years as a pro, because he was unable to roam free without two big lane eaters in the middle.
The Steelers have run a 3-4 for, well, as long as I can remember. I’m 22. And have been great at it for along time. Look at Dick LeBeau’s defensive rankings with this team. We ran a 3-4 before the Ravens wore purple.

I’m normally the first to step on people for insulting our visitors and I deserve to be chastised.

Sorry Rayder K, you are probably not an idiot, you just know nothing about football, the history of the 3-4 defense, the history of steelers defense and the short history of the ravens defense.

If you can justify why the ravens 3-4 defense has been better historically than the 3-4 defense of the steelers I’d love to hear it. I can’t wait to hear your metrics by which you judge defenses. Right now you aren’t making a “point”, you are just saying what you and “the rest of the people in the league” feel. I don’t care what you feel. You have come to a steelers blog and in your first comment you state that our 3-4 defense has historically been worse than the ravens, so back it up.

You can “feel” whatever you want, but if you bothered to pay attention to our respective defenses since 2002 maybe your “feelings” could be based in actual reality or something approaching it?

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Feb 19, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

+1

I think the Ravens should be part of any conversation on strong 3-4 defenses, but so far I agree the Steelers have a much longer (and stronger) history with it.

The 3-4 has been around since the 40’s. Just about every team in the league has used it at some point in time. But Pittsburgh has been using it steadily as their base defense since the early 80’s. It relies heavily on capable linebackers and that is the other thing Pittsburgh is well known for.

So, while the Ravens can claim to be one of the better examples of the 3-4, I think the Steelers have the better historical perspective on it.

by Varmint on Feb 20, 2009 1:37 AM EST up reply actions

If by "most feared"

you mean “fearing for their lives because Ray Lewis could stab them any second” then you might have a point.

Otherwise, no.

You probably think Ed Reed is “ZOMG! teh best safety evar!” because he plays center field and catches lame-duck passes from crappy QBs like Quinn, Anderson, Palmer, etc.

Why would we want Peppers...

Dude..we have Woodley and Harrison, why would we even consider giving up ANY draft picks for an aging, overpaid Woodley. I thought this blog site was dedicated to thoughtful discussion. Are you an actual Steelers fan, have you watched how this franchise has built itself over the years…we’re not the Dallas Cowboys or the Washington Redskins…we don’t go for the big splash, because more often than not the big splash doesn’t work out. Not even worth discussing anymore…
