Bruce Arians - SB Champ (and other thoughts)

I don't start posts here too often but after that game I have a few topics some may want to sound off on:

Star-divide

Arians

Incredibly, the Steelers have won the Super Bowl with some of the worst or at least bizarre play calling ever seen for a winning team over a season.  I can't get one play call out of my head, this is my recollection please correct if I'm wrong:

With a lead in the second half of the SB, Arians goes with an empty set on 2nd and 6 after just gaining 4 on a run over the right side.  Ben drops back and is immediately pressured and dropped for a sack.  The play results in a 10 yard loss and a clock stoppage.  Next play was a short gain to Miller(?) along the left sideline where he goes out of bounds - again this stops the clock.

My question here is obvious - what is the guy thinking?  Throwing the ball is debatable but lining up with no RB tells the defense it's pass before the snap.  Keeping them off balance is the key to success.  Without the threat of a run - our porous O Line has even more problems than normal to contend with.  I just don't get the guy, not now probably not ever.

Todd Haley and the Buzz

This guy has been the darling of the TV directors and gets more face time than any other coach on the field.  He deserves credit for Arizona's great offense and creative playcalling.  He is the talk of the NFL as a HC candidate and will probably be hired today.  Have you noticed a profound lack of the same regarding Arians?  I think Ben is his only fan.  Arians won the Super Bowl but all the other successful OCs are getting the buzz.

Polamalu

I know his contact lens fell out but did something else come unhinged as well?  Not a good game from the hero of the AFC Championship.  He batted down a ball on a 3rd down which was good but looked out of control many times.  A couple of his missed tackles were ridiculously bad.  None more so than when he leaped onto his teammate who had just whiffed on a missed tackle himself.  Not sure what was going on with him but I thought Clark played a better game at safety.

Where's Nate?

Did Washington get doubled most of the game or was he invisible?  I don't recall him getting 1 reception.  Probably need to see the coach's tape to understand what happened but he was non-existent for the offense after having a breakout year.

Running game

Parker started out OK and that was it for the run game.  We Steeler fans know what none of the talking heads have figured out - the Steelers are no longer a dominant running team.  That said, how did things go so badly after the start they got?  The coaches abandoned the run.  I can't say I blame them too much, but they needed to run the ball in the second half with the lead.  They didn't do much and when they tried they had poor formations and tactics to get it done.  They say the offense reflects the coordinator's personality.  If so, what is this saying about Arians?  I think it says " I'm in love with my playbook, regardless of the down and distance."

Mitch Berger - Turd

Another pathetic punt leads to a huge return and great field position for the opponent.  That early 33 yard gem sailing directly into Breaston's breadbasket couldn't have been thrown better by Warner.  Don't loose that ring Mitch 'cause you won't be in the league next year much less in another Super Bowl.

Big Ben - Winner

He makes some mistakes, he looks ugly sometimes but the guy is a winner.  With the game on the line he plays better.  This is unique to the best of the QBs.  He has grown into a solid, big game quarterback.  He won the game almost single-handed.  Holmes was the playmaker with the receiving yards but Roethlisberger had to play at a superhuman level to get them the win and did.

Hate to be sour grapes, but...

I agree that Arians was way off especially in the second half. I agree that the spread on second down was infuriating. Threaten the run! And if you want to pass, run it play action!

The offense clammed up in the second half, and the final drive was result of Ben and Holmes just playing ball. I don’t give that much credence to the play calling, but maybe that’s just my bias.

I almost wonder if Troy got himself an early concussion cause he looked shaky out there.

Harrison looked like a man possessed out there. He looked angry, very very angry much of the game. Granted he never looks pleasant, but seriously he was thinking about ripping a man’s arms off.

I think

Harrison did rip a guys arm off and use it as a back scratcher.

I don't understand

why BA completely abandoned the use of Miller in the 2H. 4 grabs in the first half and he was looking awesome. Then, nothing. He had one grab for 10 that was a lousy safety valve. I know there is no way he gets fired, but damn, I wish someone would take him as a HC. hehe.

arians

i dont understand a lot of his calls, but i do know he was trying to mix up a lot of different formations and play calls, maybe he thought if they were expecting another run he could get one past them with a pass, but i dont understand going with an empty backfield, i guess thats why i am not an offensive coordinator

As usual, no huddle wins the game

Wasn’t Ben, not Arians, calling the plays on the game-winning drive?

by Steelin on Feb 2, 2009 5:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ben said that it was about half and half

and he said that most of the calls didn’t quite go off, it was more just find an open guy. LOL Playground football at its finest.

offensive playcalling

First off, props to whoever came up with the idea to run quick screens, a lot of PA, and all those short passes to Holmes against wimpy speedster DRC. We ran a lot of plays that exposed the CONSTANTLY overpursuing Arizona defense, mainly in the first half. However, their defense never stopped over-pursuing, so when we switched to our plodding, run up the middle offense, they were still waiting. Honestly, my guess is that Arians (or someone) drew up about 10 new plays in the week layoff, but when we had used them up, Arians went back to his bread and butter of crappy 2 TE, please-stuff-me-Darnell-Dockett zone blocking running plays. The first 2 drives were outstanding, but then we were undone by a combo of OL struggles and playcalling.

The fourth quarter was absolutely brutal. Before the 2 minute drive, we essentially had THREE 3 & outs, with our only first down coming on a 5 yard holding penalty on first down. Run, run, sack. Run, sack, dumpoff. Incomplete, almost safety, safety. That’s the Bruce Arians offense. I don’t know what we were running the rest of the time, but when we needed the offense to hold onto the ball and run out the clock, no more creativity, exploiting mismatches, etc. This doesn’t excuse our defense from their embarassing breakdowns, but the offense is at least partly to blame.

Once again, we won by overcoming BA’s faults, not because of him. I really hope Tomlin is smart enough to kick him to the curb even after winning the Super Bowl.

One other note:

When I was looking through the play-by-plays, I realized that Holmes’ game was even more amazing than his final stat line. He had catches of 22 and 19 (that huge 3rd down play on the safety) that were called back by holding penalties. That would have turned his impressive 9 for 131 and 1 TD into 11 for 172 and 1 TD. Unreal.

Well said

As per usual, you’re got good point on this Bad.

Our second half offense looked ridiculously uninspired. Rodgers-Cromartie has really impressive closing speed and ball skills, but he looked like a chump trying to tackle Holmes when he had the ball. I especially like the overloading of the left side looking like a bubble screen to Hines, isolating Holmes and DRC. That’s like a guaranteed 5 yards.

The cards did not change up their game plan at half-time, we did and it just about lost the game for us.

+2 !!

No kidding – I thought Arians must have had a stroke on the team bus as they were driving to the stadium. It was like – holy shit Batman – somebody has a cogent game plan, what happened??!!

The Pittsburgh offense had Arizona off balance after the obligatory 1st down run for 1 yard. Then a series of WR screens, and stop routes took advantage of their soft corners. Why were the corners soft? Because they had their safeties moved up to play aggressively against the run. Once the run was shut down, Arians also stopped using the stops and screens and also didn’t use Miller. Actually, if it wasn’t Holmes in the second half it wasn’t much of anybody else either. Playaction also disappeared – why?

Heath-

That’s a very, very good point: why did Heath Miller disappear as a pass-catcher in the 2d half? Was it because of the tip-erception? I think Ben was looking for Heath when that INT was tipped. After that, i’m not sure Ben ever went back to Heath. I was convinced he would find him in the final drive, but it never happened.

And i agree: we need to rethink that concept of abandoning the run/play-action/run-fake formation. Ben is a very good passer, but at times we NEED to burn time with an effective run game. Why not use Mewelde more when we want to burn time?

Ineptitude

BA is inept. As stated so eloquintly above by many the Steelers won despite him. They had a 20-7 lead and the ball at midfield in the 4th quarter. Time to put the game away with a couple first downs and a FG. Nope.
Ben said it without saying it. When asked about the last play call, he told Berman at ESPN, “It was scramble left, scramble right, get open.” That said it all. BA had NOTHING. ZERO.
How many plays did the Steelers run inside the 10 and not punch it in? Could have iced the game in the 3rd quarter with a good play call! Pitch to Hines and throw to Holmes. Something!
Regarding the D, I think they held on as long as they could. With the O not converting 3rd down in the second half the D was on the field way too much., I had said what worried me is that LeBeau’s 3/4 is susceptible to the 4 WR spread and throw throw throw. Gannon did it to them in 02. Brady and Manning did it to them in 03 and 04. D held Warner & Fitz (studs) down for 3 quarters. Agree the 64 yard TD to Fitz was unacceptable. Championship D does not give that up with 2 minutes left in SB. But, didn’t matter. Ben & 10 pulled their collective fat out of the fire.

When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen

Two plays on defense were unacceptable to me. Obviously the big Fitz TD, but the long pass to Boldin early was ugly. First off, 3 man rush and zero pressure, not a good idea. Secondly, Farrior and BMac were covering each other instead of Boldin. Neither could get him and thus the big play. The Cards are going to move the ball – out execute you- on occasion, but those 2 plays were just coverage breakdowns that shouldn’t have happened.

I think that was mostly on McFadden

For the long pass to Boldin. McFadden is looking upfield to see what is going on instead of being glued to his man. He lost track of Boldin and bingo, he’s beat.

The 3-man rush is frustrating against Warner because he is so accurate. If he has time, he’ll complete the throw 90 per cent of the time. But you do have to mix things up. This season there were times when people criticized Lebeau for having Harrison drop back into coverage. The Romo to Owens TD pass for example. But Harrison dropping back into coverage fooled Warner on the interception.

Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good and just give credit to the other guys. The long Fitz TD was a great call and perfectly executed. Ike tried to make the jam, but Fitz took a step back to cushion the contact and made a sharp cut inside, so good play by him. Perfect throw by Warner. Ike took a shallow angle to try for the breakup rather than playing Fitzgerald’s back shoulder, and he may have thought he had inside help. Bad play by Ike. Shit happens when the other guys are really good. For three quarters the D was 7-7 vs. a talented offense. That is actually kind of unbelievable and I would take that every day.

Definetly

He lost his outside leverage once the ball was thrown. The camera view doesn’t clearly depict what the coverage was but it was crap on that play. I would guess McFadden was in deep 1/3 and the LB (Farrior?) was underneath in the curl zone. Mc Fadden allowed him to cut back outside which is a big No – No.

I still think BA is gone

Ya we did it. But, Tomlin won’t except anything less than perfect. I don’t see Tomlin keeping a “just enough” OC at the helm.

Yeah I don't think I agree

For one reason. From all appearances, Ben likes Arians. I don’t see him going anywhere.

by worldtrip on Feb 3, 2009 12:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno

Sometimes I think Arians is a knucklehead. Sometimes I think he is trying to do something creative, but the execution (typically our O-line) fails.

Troy seems to have been ‘designed’ out of the action. He was playing a much less aggressive role this time… more coverage, than pressure. I think he was being used to scare Warner away from certain areas/receivers. His first missed tackle was simply a bad read on the ball carrier. Ike and Farrior should have taken away the inside route, but Ike over-pursued and Farrior is blocked too far upfield. Troy charges toward the outside because he thinks that’s the only path available to the receiver.

Add me to the list of fans wondering about Heath Miller being missing after the first quarter.

I disagree on Arians. I thought his first drive — which remember is his scripted plays — was brilliant. I agree that as the game went on he seemed to stall — But I think that comes from him over-thinking things too much. I am of the opinion that when something is working you keep doing it until they stop it.

I agree on Troy. I don’t think Ryan Clark had a better game, but Troy has done thi two years in a row now — he dominates in the play-offs, and becomes very average (by his standards) in the SB.

Willie looks a half a step slow to me. There were a couple of times that he had holes and got three yards ont he run, where he would usually get 8 on them.

Nate was absent the whole playoffs, pretty much. I can’t imagine that they were double teaming him and leaving Santinio open!

Ben is terrific. No one could have doen what he did last night. No protection and he engineers a winning frive in the final 2 minutes. If he can stay healthy, he’s going to end up in Canton.
