Harrison's Penalty - Reactions?
What was the deal with Harrison's penalty? A lot of people are saying that he should have been ejected and, apparently, Madden said something to that effect. I didn't really see it at the time and haven't reviewed the game, yet. I have looked at the youtube content, however, and the thing is that I see nothing wrong unless, and I am not sure of this, he was blocking the opposing player and the play was over or something. The opposing player gets up repeatedly and Harrison knocks him down repeatedly, but I fail to see the cause for concern in that. What did I miss? (Probably alot?)

IDK..
..seemed a little ticky-tack to me, but i could see why it looked worse than it actually was. While he was, in fact, only keeping the guy on the ground it looked like he was punching him. From a distance it must’ve seemed way more hateful than it was.
You see guys laying on top of other guys, keeping them down, all the time. I honestly think Harrison was just trying to keep dude out of the play. Or, there might have been more going on than we realized. Who knows what that Card player did/said just prior to that?
Regardless- it was a bad decision on Harrison’s part, for sure. It wasn’t bad enough to get him ejected(as Madden insisted at the time), but it was a bad decision. Fifteen yards is never helpful.
I’m sure Hub Jagoff Arkush was babbling “I told them so! I told them he was a horrible person! Whaa whaa whaaaa-aaa!”…lol

Beat me to it. . .
I was going to comment on this too. It seems to be receiving a lot of attention, but that kind’ve blocking happens all the time in punting situations, where a guy is down and gets up only to be immediately knocked down. What are we missing?

This is my ...
recollection of the penalty … based on the one cursory look NBC gave it [of course, I’m thinking NBC stayed away from it because Al and John made such a BS assessment]. Ejection was not necessary as no punch was thrown. JH certainly gave him a severe bonus shove as the play came to an end; maybe even after the whistle. 15 yards was the right call for the shove [perhaps incited by the creative hold down techniques JH was using].

Punch
Sure appeared to me Harrison was punching the guy when he was down. In today’s NFL that is grounds for ejection.
That said, if you read my fan post I state that 92 played like a man possessed. He reminded me of Jack Splat in X. Jack also would have been ejected in today’s NFL for throwing Harris to the turf. Of course that is one of my favorite Super Bowl moments.

I didn't see a punch. I think Madden overreacted to this.

I agree
isn’t a punch with the hand closed? His hand is open.
Watching it again (and again) the less I think it was that bad – now refs get benefit of the doubt, IMO, as they see the thing live – but no need for the up roar we are hearing from folks.

Just commented on this at Revenge of the Birds
Here’s what I saw after watching it again:
He blocked the guy to the ground, then gave him an open-handed jab to the shoulder pads to make sure he stayed down. That might have been a bit excessive, but it was hardly the "punch" that people are calling it. Then, when the Cardinal player finally started to get up, Harrison shoved him in the chest and knocked him to the ground. The play was still going on at that point, so in my mind, that’s just a block. That’s the point of the play that caused the flags to come out. After that, he continued trying to block him as the play was ending, possibly taking it a few seconds past the whistle. I saw this as a very minor issue, and was surprised that it was flagged. I am amazed that so many saw it as a reason for ejection, as I didn’t catch Madden bringing it up until I re-watched the tape.

Concur
It was probably the past the whistle stuff, I agree. The level of violence, however, was definitely not out of bounds. This was not a defenseless player – this was a SAFETY that tried to take out Harrison’s legs (haplessly). I think its haters and non-regulars-observers of the NFL that must be playing this up.

Punch or push?
Just watched the replay.
I can’t tell if he punches the guy, or if he pushes him down. Yeah, his arm goes back and then forward, but I can’t tell if it’s a clenched fist.
If it was a punch, that’s one thing…but if he pushes him down….so what? People are pushed all the time. Just watched it again…..he’s certainly pushing the guy.

Looks to me like the guy went to chop Harrison at the knees and he got pissed.

I agree w/ the penalty...
…but I don’t find it all that excessive warranting a ejection from the game. Harrison definitely held and pushed the guy down (I forget, was that Gandy that happened to, who had been holding Harrison all night??) and repeatedly shoved him after the whistle. So yeah, I can see the personal foul, agreed with it then too.
I missed last night Maddens reaction to it and today, listening to the radio, and rewatching it, I think the media has definitely overracted to it. Harrison didn’t punch him. Just shoved and held him down.

Dont think it was gandy
I think it was a smaller dude as it was on a punt.
Anyway, the penalty was negligible seeing as it was half the distance to the goal, aka 1/2 a yard. Although perhaps its that half yard that causes a safety.
Silverback to me didnt look like he did anything major so long as the whistle hadnt been blown. Which to me it wasnt more than a second or two after at most.
I personally thought he was hungry and looking for something to eat.

Look at that video and then tell me hes “pushing” Francisco. If you can do that, then you are a blind steelers homer…

where's my glasses again?
He’s violently pushing, but isn’t this game violent? You don’t want to get knocked down twice? Stay down the first time.

First time I saw it
It was not a punch, but more violent than a shove. Yeah, it deserved a flag. I don’t think it deserved an ejection.
I will point out that Ed Reed would certainly not be unbiased about James Harrison considering the hit Harrison put on him in the MNF game in ’07. ;)

Ed Reed? Seriously?
The game is violent. He got the penalty called, which was probably deserved, but clearly did not need to be ejected. Look closely, his fist was NEVER closed. If that was Ray Lewis or T. Suggs you would be saying the same thing. Pot, meet Kettle.

I really don't care,
he’s a beast. Beasts sometimes get violent. Beasts make the big plays. Harrison made the biggest. At least he didn’t stomp on a dudes face with his cleat like the Titan’s beast.

should have been a no call
I didnt understand the call and to eject him would have been horrible. The game is turning into something less than physical in the minds of the press and fans.

Oh My God ! What is this ...
..in my honest opinion he dig give him a bit of a punch but so the hell what ? I’m glad he did .. is this football or ice skating ? Block the guy, hit him, do whatever it takes I really don’t care as long as you aren’t trying to blow someone’s knee out and end their career then shoving, punching whatever it’s all part of the game ..
You know what, sometimes the NFL makes me sick, its so hypocritical, I can go to the shops and buy a 100 NFL produced DVD’s lauding the greats of the game showing me all the dirty little tricks they use to play to get an edge, the late hits, all of that kind of stuff which the NFL is happy to sell to me yet I switch on today’s game and if a player roll his socks down or even look sat another player the wrong way they want to fine him and talk about suspensions and stuff .. what the hell, let the guys play football and understand its a mans game played with emotions..
Keep Hittin’ em Deebo !!

Not illegal...
And besides, If I recall, on the opening plays of the game a Cardinal DID punch one of our men.
Its retarded to say that sticking with a block is a penalty.
Imagine If Silverback lets him go, and somehow 47’s arm strips our ball carrier and then the ball gets recovered by Arizona. Now Harrison is a slacker and isnt finishing a play. Think about it.
