Pre-Combine Prospect Watch List

I know we haven't even seen the parade yet, but lets move on to the next task at hand - the '09 NFL Draft.

This list of players are players that would fit the Steelers.  Rather than looking at all seven rounds - this is more one through four.

QB - None

RB -Shonn Greene/Iowa, Rashad Jennings/Liberty, Andre Brown/NC State, PJ Hill/Wisconsin, Gartrell Johnson/Colorado St., Herb Donaldson/Western Illinois

FB - None (Unless we want to replace Carey D)

I am adding some WR...mostly past the top tier of Crabtree, Harvin, Maclin, Heyward-Bey, and Nicks.

WR - Juaquin Iglesias/Oklahoma, Derrick Williams/Penn St., Mohamed Massaquoi/Georgia, Ramses Barden/Cal Poly, Brian Robiskie/Ohio St., Austin Collie/BYU, Louis Murphy/Florida, Quan Cosby/Texas, Jeremy Childs/Boise St., Aaron Kelly/Clemson, Darrius Passmore/Marshall, Jarrett Dillard/Rice, Demetrius Byrd/LSU, Brooks Foster/N. Carolina, Brandon Gibson/Washington St., Jaison Williams/Oregon, Kenny McKinley/S. Carolina, Tiquan Underwood/Rutgers, Mike Wallace/Ole Miss, (Moslty looking at a KR) Pat White/West Virginia, Brandon Tate/N. Carolina (torn ACL), Sammie Stroughter/Oregon St.

TE - (Maybe another blocking TE) Davon Drew/E. Carolina, Ryan Purvis/Boston Co., Bear Poscoe/Fresno St.

OT - Eben Britton/Arizona, Michael Oher/Ole Miss, William Beatty/UConn, Troy Kropog/Tulane, Phil Loadholt/Oklahoma, Fenuki Tupou/Oregon, Alex Boone/Ohio St., Jamon Meredith/S. Carolina, Augustus Parrish/Kent St., Jason Watkins/Florida, Joel Bell/Furman

OG - Duke Robinson/Oklahoma, Herman Johnson/LSU, Andy Levitre/Oregon St., Trevor Canfield/Cincinnati, Ray Feinga/BYU, Louis Vazquez/Texas Tech

C - Alex Mack/California, Max Unger/Oregon, Jonathan Luigs/Arkansas, Eric Wood/Louisville, Antoine Caldwell/Alabama

All defensive players are listed at positions they would play in 3-4 D.

DE - Tyson Jackson/LSU, Fili Moala/USC, Sen'Derrick Marks/Auburn, Jarron Gilbert/San Jose St., Ricky Jean-Francois/LSU, Vance Walker/Georgia Tech, Alex Magee/Purdue

NT - Ron Brace/Boston Co., Terrance Taylor/Michigan

OLB - Everette Brown/Florida St., Larry English/Northern Illinois, Aaron Maybin/Penn St., Brian Cushing/USC, Clint Sintim/Virginia, Brandon Williams/Texas Tech, Cody Brown/UConn

ILB - Clay Matthews/USC, Scott McKillop/Pittsburgh, Worrell Williams/California, Jasper Brinkley/S. Carolina (Levon Kirkland look a like)

CB - DJ Moore/Vanderbilt, Sean Smith/Utah, Victor Harris/Virginia Tech, Jarius Byrd/Oregon, Domonique Johnson/Tennessee St., Asher Allen/Georgia, DeAngelo Smith/Cincinnati, Mark Parson/Ohio, Keenan Lewis/Oregon St.

FS - Louis Delmas/W. Michigan, William Moore/Missouri, Sherrod Martin/Troy

I have purposly omitted top tier players such as Andre Smith, Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe because I don't think that the Steelers would give up what it would cost to get into the top 10.

I have also left off CBs such as Malcolm Jenkins, Vontae Davis; LBs such as Rey Maualuga, James Laurinaitis.  Because they are not a "need" position that we would trade up to get in the middle of the 1st Round.

Much like GM Colbert said last year - The only positions that the Steelers would not look at in the 1st Round were QB and TE.  The only positions that the Steelers will not take in the first round are QB, WR, RB, and TE.

Obviously the Steelers will be looking heavily at OL with #32 (or a mid-1st trade-up).  I think the best choice would be to go OT rather than Alex Mack or Max Unger...I can live with Hartwig for another year as opposed to Willie Colon.  I think the sleeper OT of the 1st Round is William Beatty.  Beatty help block for 2,000 yard rusher Donald Brown.  He is big framed, long arm tackle with projectabiliy to a left tackle.  Currently he is a little light, but according to Mike Mayock (NFL Network) will fill out his frame and put on the needed weight.  This is the player that I want with our 1st Round pick whether it is at 32 or as high as 20, I believe he is worth it.

Please comment on these or other players we should be looking at for the Black and Gold.

Honestly

I don’t care which position we go to on the offensive line as long as its the offensive line. If we are to win next year in the playoffs, when Brady coming back, Peyton being a year removed from his injury, Osi going back to the Giants, we are going to have to have an offense that on any given game can put up 30 with the best of them. Plus I’d like to see better O-line play so Ben can play at least 15 years in this league instead of 8 Max because there is no way anyone’s body can with stand the type of pounding that he takes consistently. If we can get his sack totals for the year around 20-25 then I’ll be happy.

I’d like to see 2 O linemen, 1 that can help immediately (1st rounder) 2 D linemen with one of them able to help immediately, then it doesn’t matter to me, just keep Nate, B-Mac and maybe Starks

by tannofsteel84 on Feb 2, 2009 10:03 PM EST reply actions

Yup-

If the Steelers could identify 2-3 for-sure type guys on either side of the O/D line, it would be worth trading up to get those guys, where ever and who ever they were. A first-year-starter at O-line and a dominating player who could rotate in for pass-rush would dramatically improve this team.

That said, i think they will go for BPA, then draft by projection with an eye on longetivity of career and developmental potential/upside. The Steelers are creating a science out of finding and drafting sleepers and late-round gems. I expect that to continue and improve.

by tobiathan on Feb 2, 2009 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Beatty would probably be the best OT pick that we could reasonably get int he first round, probably without even trading up. I saw some of the senior bowl stuff on him and he looked good, maybe good enough to start at RT immediately.

However, Mack may be the best center in the last 5 or 6 years of the draft. He could solidify the inside of the line this year (playing LG maybe…Kemo has probably taken as many points away from us as Colon this year) and be the center of the future. One way to protect Ben would be to open up the interior run game, create the threat of the play action, etc. And seeing Stap and Kemo schooled a couple of time each made me miss having a dominate Guard or Center.

Honestly, it seems to me we should shoot for a superiior interior lineman in the first, which we can probably get without giving up anything, and trade up in the second for the best tackle/guard available. It’ll cost less and if last years draft class has shown us, a projected second round tackle (like Sam Baker for the Falcons) has the potential to start right away (at least at RT).

Man, I love having the problem of drafting last….

The Blind Side

I dont know if anyone has read this book by Michael Lewis about Michael Oher. I read it about 14 months ago and its a great read, I strongly recommend it.

Oher has overcome so much already in his life. I wont go into too much detail, but the part I want to focus on is his ability to learn. From what I can remember he is a very visual learner and really needs things explained to him very well in order to understand. He always had a tutor and what not, and at times needed help understanding schemes for the o-line. I know this may not be a big deal as OT, but blitzes are so different in the NFL. This kid is a great athlete but if he somehow falls to us, Ive seen him going as low as 28th, and we take him it will may take him a while to fully understand the offense, blitz pickup, etc.

by Jett on Feb 3, 2009 1:12 AM EST reply actions

Agree

Mayock had a pretty good scouting report on Michael Oher…might still be on the NFL.com (videos). Plays a little stiff and too up right. I think knee bend was another issue.

by ZnJersey on Feb 4, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Don't forget Hartwig was also a guard

Picking Unger or Mack would provide a possible year of learning, playing guard, or moving Hartwig to guard for a year.

Granted we’d want to have Starks nailed down for that to happen.

by betelgeuse on Feb 3, 2009 1:44 AM EST reply actions

Luigs is by far

the best center of the draft. This kid is a two time Rimington Award winner for best center in the NCAA. He anchored a line that allowed Darren McFadden and Felix Jones to each rush for 1000+ yds 3 straight years. Arkansas was behind most of the year this year as they were in a rebuilding year, so they threw a lot more, but believe me, Luigs has the potential to anchor an NFL line for years to come.

by steelerark on Feb 3, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I like him as well

I am an SEC guy, so I have seen Luigs on a couple of occasions. Pretty good technique especially in Run Blocking. That said the knock on him maybe that he has trouble with larger NT (Ngata, Rodgers). I think he had trouble with Terrance Cody DT Alabama (360 lbs).

I would still take him for sure. And great value in Round 2.

Eric Wood is an underrated player in this draft. Made every start in college. Probably just as good as Ryan Khalil (who was taken by Carolina out of USC). Most coaches who played against Wood thought that he was the best Center in the country. Then again the same coaches that played against Wood, did not play against Luigs, Mack or Unger.

by ZnJersey on Feb 4, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Terrance Taylor

As a Michigan fan I feel I need to speak up on him. While he’s big on heart (huge, actually…the only reason we [Michigan] won the Michigan/Wisconsin game this year [in which we were losing 19-0, and had been outgained 300-100 in terms of total yardage at the end of 3] is because Taylor delivered a speech for the ages on the sideline) he’s simply too short to be an effective NT.

Well, that’s what the Mel Kipers of the world will say anyway.

And Alex Boone (OT, OSU) just drank his way out of being drafted, but it’s ok because he sucks anyway. Think Todd Fordham, version 2.0.

Really?

Wow. I’ll eat crow on that one. I thought (for some reason) he was only like 5’10/5’11.

Maybe because every time I’d seen him out on the field he was next to Alan Branch, who is just a monster.

I think we're getting ahead of ourselves here

ZnJersey, the next step should be to go through with our plan to fire Bruce Arians. Scouting is like 2-3 steps down the road. ;)

But seriously

Beatty or Britton would both be great picks, and people are saying Oher might drop a little and give us a shot. Any of those guys would be great. Any OL would be a big improvement, though. Our guards and RT are awful, our LT is okay, but a FA.

I don’t like Jackson or Marks for the DL. Did you leave off BJ Raji because he’ll go too high? I think he’d be a great future NT if he happened to fall to our neighborhood. Hopefully we’ll be able to get a guy like Brace or Taylor after the first, though.

If Jeremy Maclin fell to us at our position, I’d feel a similar way to how I felt about Mendenhall. We’re not desperate at WR, but we’re far from certain, too. Ward’s in his last year and is overpayed, Washington could be gone this year, Sweed could come on or could be cut, and for all his playoff heroics Holmes has not been a consistent #1. He could be resigned or he could leave in a couple years. Even though we probably won’t get a shot at Maclin, and may not take him anyway, I don’t want to preclude the possibility of taking a WR.

I agree with you about the WR position, we are far from set at the position.

I doubt Raji will fall to our neighborhood. He is going to blow people away at the combine and the word is he may sneak into the top 10.

Raji

He very well might, but it’s not certain. He was dominant in senior bowl practices, then disappeared in the game. Anyway, I just thought it was odd that there wasn’t a mention of him as out of reach or as a potential pick. Before the senior bowl, he was in our neighborhood in most places I saw.

by BadMaafala on Feb 3, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Ya, I was VERY un-impressed with Raji in the senior bowl. I think he listened to the hype about himself during the week and decided he didn’t need the game to increase his stock.

Their are rumors about his attitude and work ethic and he has had weight problems already. Watching the senior bowl he rarely drew double teams, and got dominated a few times one on one by centers and guards.

I'll drink your Milkshake, I'll drink it up!

by Frank Mineo (DYMS) on Feb 3, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Ward's in his last year?

He just had a thousand yards this season. Sure, he is no longer a dominant reciever, but how many clutch catches did he make on third down in huge games for us this year? No way he has one year left. I know that we don’t hold on to older players, but I truly believe that Hines will be the Farrior/Bettis exception and will retire a steeler.

by steelerark on Feb 3, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think he meant last year in his contract.

affirmative

Thanks Plainview. He’s going to slow down at some point and we owe him a lot of money in 2009. My guess is he’ll sign an extension for a cheaper price, but who knows. My point is that our only WR under contract in 2011 is Limas Sweed and there are no sure signings among the others.

Maclin won't make it past Oak at 7

If he does…Chi, NYJ, TB will be there to clean it up. I just don’t think we would be trading up to get a Maclin.

I can add some WR if you all would like.

by ZnJersey on Feb 4, 2009 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sold on that yet

He definitely could go that high, but I don’t think it’s a sure thing. I think 20 is where I’d set the ceiling. The guy was considered a late first rounder before the Senior Bowl, and he did nothing in the actual game.

As far as Maclin, I don’t think he’ll go in the top 10 unless he tears up the combine. There’s a lot of guys with a lot more hype, so unless he makes his own hype, he could be a bit forgotten. Like I said, I know it’s a long shot, but IF he fell, I’d think about making an exception for him. Mendy was in or near the top 10 in just about everyone’s drafts last year. I agree, though that there’s no way I’d trade up for a WR.

Starting without me?

Lol, I was chomping at the bit the last couple weeks to get the draft talk started. Of course the Superbowl and Playoffs were by far the priority.

Other guys to watch: Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin or Crabtree? HA, we need a big back element at a low cost. I like Gary but I’m not sure if he’s the answer. Shonn Greene, or Jovorskie Lane, maybe P.J. Hill could fit this spot.

Crabtrell will be long gone at the time we pick unless we trade up to before the Raiders. Maclin is also likely to be gone before we pick. I personally never really liked Harvin, he gets injured far to much.

I have 100% confidence in the drafters

I believe wholeheartedly they will find their guy and go get him.

You have to figure we’ve traded up before. When we spot a guy we get him.

Case in point (s)

Troy Polamalu didnt fall to us, we snatched him and got a future HOF.
Santa Homie, again they went up for him and he came down with the biggest catch in franchise history.

So to me, if they need to jump they will. And if nobody good is at 32, they could potentially slide down a few spots and get some developmental picks.

by Mechem on Feb 4, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

I agree with the trading up

But not for someone who is not really a need.

Troy was a need because we was a dynamic back end defensive player to go with C. Hope.

Tone was also a need. The Steelers just won SBXL, Randle-El was gone, and we had zero top end speed at WR. Plus he was the number one WR that fell into the 20s.

Correct

So yeah like I’m saying if the Jesus of OT is sitting there they have my vote for getting him.

Immediate help

One thought – the Steelers have been great at building from the bottom up, and I don’t think any of us see that changing, but is there a chance that we go for some immediate help at either of our top two need positions (O-Line/D-Line) in the form of free agency? The point is that we won this season, with a very flawed O-Line. I don’t think most of the guys we are talking about would win starting jobs as Rookies. The question becomes do we take another stab at O-Line this year and hope to get someone to anchor the left side of the line for the next three years while our current draft class develops.

My sense is, we have to go this way. If we do that can change the way we approach the draft to a certain extent – depending ofbcourse on the quality of player we get.

by SteelerBuddha on Feb 4, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions

For sure we will sign somebody

Over the years the Steelers have consistently plugged a few holes with FAs who were not headliners, just useful players. That probably won’t change but it is certainly nice to fantasize about what signing a Jordan Gross would do. The only other OT of note is Vernon Carey (Miami) who switched from LT to RT this year.

Aside from the obvious Gross, the three guys who catch my eye on the FA list are DEs Antonio Smith (Arizona) and Chris Canty (Dallas), and C-G Jason Brown (Baltimore). The problem with signing a DE is that he has to be demonstrably better than Kiesel to justify the money it would take to sign him, and that’s no sure thing. Smith might be worth it because it’s not easy to find a good 3-4 DE in the draft (ie, Ryan McBean). Brown is huge (6-3, 320), young (26 in May) and versatile (starter at guard and center), an immediate improvement at any of our three interior OL positions.

by steeler.lifer on Feb 4, 2009 5:00 PM EST reply actions

Draft Magic

Now let’s not forget every year mock drafts are terribly inaccurate and always seem to be thrown for loops come draft day.
My point is that although everyone projects the Steelers to pick an OL or Tyson Jackson, there’s really no telling who will fall to the Steelers at the end of the last round.
What if Tyson Jackson is drafted a few spots before us?
What if the only OL prospects available are obvious reaches?
What if we sign a few free agents to fill needs at certain positions? (add youth to D-line/strengthen OL)
It’s the beauty of the offseason and the draft!
There’s really no telling what will happen.
Let’s face it, every year a top10 talent seemingly “slips” down to the lower part of the first round. Let me play the devil’s advocate here,
What if Rey Maualuga slips down to the 20’s by some magical way, could you imagine imagine the Steelers doing whatever it takes to trade up and draft Maualuga! (think back to the way we acquired Polamalu)
I am extrememly excited for the draft seeing as how every year things go for some crazy trun and an outstanding talent falls to the Steelers. I will just have to wait and see!

by iBleedBlack&Gold on Feb 4, 2009 6:26 PM EST reply actions

On Maualuga

He is a savage…he would be beast in the middle after Farrior hangs it up.

He should slip a little from were he was projected to go earlier in the year (Top 10). I could see the Jets and Rex Ryan taking Maualuga at 17. As well as the Bolts and Lions.

by ZnJersey on Feb 5, 2009 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not a big Maualuga fan. He’s a great “thumper” 2 down type of LB, and he has a decent feel for coverage, but he’s just not good enough of an athlete to be an all-downs Pro Bowl type of player. He reminds me of AJ Hawk, and I have a feeling he’ll disappoint if someone takes him in the top 10. Like Hawk, I could see him being a solid SLB in the 4-3 and wouldn’t hesitate taking him in the second if we needed another LB. Another interesting comparison is Woodley, who’s about the same size, speed and strength, only Woodley was an accomplished pass rusher when he came out. Obviously, Woodley was a steal in the second, but imagine him trying to play ILB or 4-3 LB. Or imagine trying to project him into a 3-4 OLB without his track record as an every down pass rusher.

LB’s are just too easy to come by to take one with limited athletic upside in the first round. Even if he fell to us at 32, I wouldn’t be very interested.

Anything can happen

True statement. This is why the draft is so sweet.

My thing is, and I stand by this. If you get to your pick and you dont really feel excited about anybody right that second, and dont want to reach, trade your ass down and get them extra developing picks.

I think this will be a good year and having some extra picks will help us draft upwards.

Besides, nobody from last years draft has showed up yet so its gonna be like having 2 in one!

Fullback

In my opinion, it would be nice if we got back to running with a true fullback, ie Brannan Southerland out of Georgia… He blocked for one of the best running backs in the nation last year in Knowshon Moreno, who’s productivity went up dramatically with Branna back in the lineup. Unfortunately, Bruce “3TE set” Arians won’t ever go for it.

Question?

We have a 3rd round comp pick for Faneca. Would you package both 3rd round picks for a mid to low 1st rd pick in addition to the 32nd? and do you think Colbert would?

by Marvin, The Paranoid Android on Feb 8, 2009 5:23 PM EST reply actions

Could be a great idea

According to the trade value chart, that package of picks (No. 32 overall plus the two late third-rounders) would move the Steelers up to about 21st overall. Throw Foote into the equation and maybe the Lions (at No. 20) would make that deal. The key obviously is who is available. If one of the top four OT prospects is still around then it might be a great idea. The Steelers have done it before, trading up seven spots to grab Holmes in 2006, and trading up 12 spots to take Polamalu in 2003.

Thanks chicago

Appreciate the clarification. Makes it more difficult to add up the trade value numbers (which are just a guide anyway, and rarely followed exactly to the letter on draft day). The extra picks do allow for flexibility though and make it easier to deal.
