Tough Question's

I find this article by Ed Buchette interesting from a number of angles. One is that BL really talks up how super it is to be a champion on Tomlin's team.  He indicates that he would be silly not to consider any fair offer from the Steelers to remain in the mix as the back up QB. Sure he wants the chance to start but he also knows that the "grass is not always greener". He seems to have fallen in love with being a Steeler and can you blame him?

The Steelers are currently flush with capable, winning QB's and have arguably the toughest, winningest QB in the league as their leader. Not a bad situation to be in considering that some teams clearly lack winners behind center. So what do the Steelers do here? Do they need to keep 3 QB's? I say yes, but which three?

Batch has been a huge asset to this team during his seven years with the squad and can probably still get it done at age 34 if forced to start.  It is widely accepted that Batch is a consumate team player, a real pro. He wants to play, the Steelers want him to stay so he probably gets inked. It's a done deal right? My primary concern: I wonder that since Batch's playing days are winding down at what point does he become a liability? If both Batch and Leftwich stay, whose #2.

Schematically, Leftwich is a better fit for this offense. If he would be happy to step into Batch's role as the long term BU to BB then the Steelers should seriously consider locking him in as the #2.

DD is a project who by all accounts is worth keeping. He may develop into a top notch starter some day. Nevertheless, he seems to be the odd man out here. Even though he probaly wouldn't bring much in a trade, should the Steelers consider trading him?

Your thoughts.

Here is the link to Buchette's piece.

Lefty is saying all the right things – and I’m sure that he enjoyed his time in a winning, cohesive organization – but he thinks he can still start. And, for a team like the Bears or Chiefs or Jets he probably can. He would be foolish at this point in his career to merely consider himself a back up when a lot of GM’s and coaches would probably give him the chance to start.

yeah

i read in an article somewhere that Lord Byron would consider starting for the Bears if given the chance, but just recently Lovie said that he was gonna commit to Orton as the starter so idk…

#4 as #2 QB

True, Blue. Key word though, -probably. Though he is one of the better free agent QB’s available, it remains to be seen if a team is willing to shell out the cash to install him as starter, or have him come compete for a starting slot. In this scenario, nothing is a given, and BL knows this.

On the other hand, if the Steelers want to commit to #4 as their #2 QB, the salary comparison likely becomes less of an issue. I think he is aware that as an employer the Steelers are heads above the rest and could offer him long term stability. It sounds to me that this is where he is leaning. Then the question becomes, do the Steelers pull the trigger? Personally, I think it would be a great move.

Tough choice

On one hand, Lefty will want some fraction of Ben’s millions, we can’t afford to spend that on a backup QB, and we have two inexpensive backup QBs in the wings.

On the other hand, BL was a great back-up last year for us and came through big-time in a clutch. He proved he was worth having.

Batch has been down for awhile, and he may still suffice, but only the coaches know how healthy and ready he’ll be.

There is no way we keep 4 QBs at a position where #1 is such a sure thing.

Trade Dixon? I really have no problem with that since he hasn’t really contributed. I don’t think he’s progressed enough to warrant more trade value, though. Who knows, though, maybe he could be the trade fodder to push a draft-day deal over the edge —what with the wildcat gaining popularity.

Which brings me to why I want to keep Dixon.
I’m dreaming of a seven point lead in the 4th quarter next year. Ben takes the bench, and Dixon steps in at QB with FWP behind him. So many counters, fakes are possible, so many places to run … provided we have any blocking whatsoever.

Coach T = X factor

Another thing that strikes me about this article concerning BL, and other Steeler free agents for that matter, (most notably, Bmac) is how much does playing for Tomlin factor into players decisions about free agency? For example, if Bmac wants to play for Tomlin, then I have a hunch that Tomlin will see to it that Bmac remains a Steeler.

While it is most certainly true that most players sole consideration is being paid top money for their services (naturally) something tells me that Tomlin may well be an X factor in some player’s decision about who they line up for. If not Tomlin, than the greatest franchise in sports. If there is even a hair of truth to this, there will be more rings forthcoming.

Not an Issue

Leftwich wants to start. Somewhere, he’ll have his opportunity. Or, worse case scenario, he goes in at number 2, but can at least compete for the job.

Let’s face it, he can’t compete here. This is Ben’s Team.

I love CB… I have concerns, though about him if we needed him for, say, a four game stretch. But, he is a ’Burgh boy, and has been such a great team player… I can see him kind of going the Jason Garret route, frankly… from Back-Up QB to QB Coach, to offensive co-ordinator — all in black and gold. I hope he stays.

Dixon is not being utilized. I love the idea of him coming into a wildcat formation every now and then. Also, the guy should learn to hold for kicks. Can you imagine if he were the holder? You’d have some very nervous special teams, wondering if he might just take it and run, or take it and throw… He is a weapon we need to develop…

+1

I think DD will be a great asset, he just needs the right training. As long as he gets pointers here and there from BB, I think he’ll do great.

I promise this is the last madden reference for the offseason

I use Dixon as the holder in Madden and do just as you suggest – works every time.

BLeftwich: I believes he loves playing for Coach T but I think the extra $$$ and the chance to start will be too much for him to stay.

CBatch: I’m not sure of his skills since he’s not getting any younger. May stay on as a coach in the not so distant future.

DDixon: I know some fans like him. I do not. I thought we would have been better served with a OLineman with that pick. I want to see what he can do and it would be great if he’s going to produce like a lot think he can but I’m skeptical. The guy looks like the Ravens would break him in half!!

BMac: I really like him and want him back but I don’t see it. The market for good, young CB’s is going up, up, up…and out of our price range. Colbert was talking about how this draft is good for CB’s. I think we may be spending a high draft pick on a CB.

See Buchette's piece

Apparently it is an issue. There is a fine line between being a competitor and a gambler. Given #4 comments about the coach and club, my guess that team success and stability do have role to play after all.

I read it

and I thought it was great. Further proved what we thought, Coach Tomlin is the man!!! I am proud of our organization and proud to be a fan-atic!!

BLeftwich has a good point…if he leaves, he could get stuck as the #2 qb on a crappy team…yes, he’d have more $$$ but not much fun…it’s a balancing act. In the end, I think BL is such a competitior, the opportunity to try and lead your own team as the #1 guy may be too enticing.

We shall see…

SteelerMike, I meant for “See Buchette’s piece” to be a reply to “Not an issue”. You may be right about Bmac being priced out of our range, but if the Steelers make a real commitment to sign him to a fair contract offer, I think he stays put. In other words, it is a matter of making decisions and structuring your commitments. It’s possible that Colbert could be sending out smoke signals with his DB musings. Never too early for that. So could #4 for that matter, right bluegrass?

It is

a good read. Props again to the FO for getting him for what 600k? when Charlie went down. He said some great stuff about the Steelers and Coach Tomlin, and out of the side of his mouth slammed the Jags. I would love to have him back, but there is no way he will sign for league minimum. Lefty will get a nice check during FA. These team will be dumb not to fight for him; Tamp, Minn, SF, Jets, and the Bears. Lefty’s quick release with a decent running game will get you to the playoffs.

My guess he will end up in Minn or Tamp.

Quick Release???

I agreed with most of what you said… but Byron has a quick release? Can’t agree with that. The guy looks like someone trying to throw to the catcher from centerfield without hitting the cut-off man… He reads and decides faster than Ben. But his release is long and slow…

by MarkJoel66 on Feb 22, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True he is a human catapolt

but when he stepped in on spot duty for us i noticed that he makes decisions super fast. I think he can get away with exaggerated release of his if he make the kind of reads we saw in the Washington game.

it never got weird enough for me

by JerseyFresh on Feb 23, 2009 12:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would

Love to see Byron stay. He obviously loves it here. But he deserves one more shot, and if he doesnt succeed, the Steelers can be open again if Dixon isnt the answer. But for now, Batch to mentor Dixon and make him the future #2. Dixon would be great for some wildcat trick plays.

by gimpsta7 on Feb 22, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's about whether he deserves it or not

Because he does deserve to stay but I’d let him go just to makes sure our draft pick doesn’t go to waste. DD may become as formidable as BB, you never know.

by paulamalu on Feb 22, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

different idea

Let BL go. He wants to start, and he deserves that opportunity. Dixon is the #2. This kid can play, and having him as the #2 means he can come in at any time for trick plays, wildcat etc. He will be very dangerous in that role. Bring Batch in as a coach. If the injury bug hits the QBs then we can sign him to the active roster or pick up a vet QB free agent. Those guys are always around, just like Leftwich was this year.

We simply can’t afford to sign either Lefty or Batch except for the minimum and expect to make all the other signings we need. If Ben is hurt for a long period of time, I think we’re in trouble no matter who the QB is. Although Dixon has as much potential as anyone to step up and shine in that scenario. The upside is if he does he becomes a valuable trade commodity.

Well now, ...

that is an interesting piece. All season, I have thought that BL was a great backup to have in hand. While I like Charlie Batch and what he has done for the team, my assessment is that BL is a much more powerful backup. I also can see why he would love to stay with the Steelers. It has to be a great place to be and hey, with Big Ben always on the move, stepping in to start is just a head-bang away. On the other hand, publicizing a desire to stay just might drive up the “yes, I’ll leave Pittsburgh price.” Charlie would be a great number 3 QB as well. Talent on hand if the Steelers ever have to go to number 3 and a number 3 that can actually understand what is going on and discuss it with the playing QB. The downside to a BB, BL and CB lineup is that your QB of the future isn’t being grown appropriately because he’s not on the roster.
