BTSC Community Mock Draft Part 1: Pick A Team!

For those of you who were around the site last year, you surely remember the Mock Draft that we conducted ourselves here on Behind The Steel Curtain.

Here's how it goes basically - I list the draft order of the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft. You pick a team. Until we see what kind of participation we might be having, I'd prefer if we only picked one team to start. Depending on participation levels, some people might select for two teams. We'll just see.

From there, we'll each write a few paragraphs about our draft selection when your team is 'on the clock.' Like last year, you can email me the posts, I'll format them and post them with a mention of who the credit belongs to for the selection. Last year was a success and a lot of fun. All in all, I thought we did a good job with our picks - outside of Matt Ryan that is. I think I'm partly responsible for setting the narrative about him last year around this time and consequently, he fell pretty damn far. Anyway, regardless of whether we're on or off the mark with our picks, it's a fun way to divvy up some of the writing here, while learning about some of the other teams in the league and some of the soon-to-be newcomers in the National Football League.

Without further ado:

ROUND 1

  1. Detroit Lions
  2. St. Louis Rams
  3. Kansas City Chiefs
  4. Seattle Seahawks
  5. Cleveland Browns
  6. Cincinnati Bengals
  7. Oakland Raiders
  8. Jacksonville Jaguars
  9. Green Bay Packers
  10. San Francisco 49ers
  11. Buffalo Bills
  12. Denver Broncos
  13. Washington Redskins
  14. New Orleans Saints
  15. Houston Texans
  16. San Diego Chargers
  17. New York Jets
  18. Chicago Bears
  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas via Roy Williams trade)
  21. Philadelphia Eagles
  22. Minnesota Vikings
  23. New England Patriots
  24. Atlanta Falcons
  25. Miami Dolphins
  26. Baltimore Ravens
  27. Indianapolis Colts
  28. Philadelphia Eagles (from Carolina Panthers)
  29. New York Giants
  30. Tennessee Titans
  31. Arizona Cardinals
  32. YOUR PITTSBURGH STEELERS

UPDATE:

Alll teams have been selected. I will send out instructions no later than this weekend about when we'll start. It won't be before Tuesday of next week, but that doesn't mean we can't all start learning a little something extra about the teams we've selected. It helps put into context the selections having read a bit about their past season and current rosters. It might be wise for us to let free agency play out a bit before we get started too of course, but usually there's a big flurry at the beginning so let's see what the weekend brings us in that regard.

Thanks to all for participating, I'll be putting up a post that details who's got who and what's next.

RULES:

There is just one! Please only participate if you think you're going to be able to devote the (small amount) time to make a thoughtful selection and write up. This won't require hours of research or writing or anything like that, but it's only fun when everybody lives up to their end of the bargain and tries to individually make the mock draft a collective success by doing a decent job. It also means having at least daily access to email so that you can be aware of when your team is 'on the clock.' I will send out an email reminder when that's the case, and make it abundantly clear on the site. But if your a reader who can only check in a couple times a week, it'd be appreciated if you perhaps held out and waited at least to see if the group was looking for people to slide in and fill out the participating roster.

Actually I lied, there are two rules. #2 = No Trades in our draft. Gets too complicated. Sorry.

NOTE!

PLEASE CHECK TO SEE WHO'S BEEN SELECTED BEFORE COMMENTING!

I will update once or twice to try to help keep confusion to a minimum, but please help a brother out and check before picking!. Thank you.

Ready, set, pick a team!

I’ll take the Washington Redskins…

I took them last year and they traded their pick away so I call that a draw…

I see

we don’t have any input from Browns fans this offseason, unlike last. ;)

I wonder if we’ll get a baltimore fan to draft ray-ray’s replacement.

hehe, i know

but it really was a stretch taking him last year first overall. It sucks that he’s floundering now for a lousy Raiders team.

by steelerark on Feb 26, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Hate to see that, cause I just don’t see the Raiders doing anything but sucking as long as Al’s around.

Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

The Bears are in such a shitty way, personnel-wise.

The personnel on the defensive side is fine, but most hardcore Bears fans don’t think that’s true. And the personnel on the offensive side, other than RB, is a total train wreck.

I kind of wanted the Bears, due to the fact that I spend a few hours each week listening to Chicago sports radio, but they will be tough to pick for.

by PaulMorel on Feb 26, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

agreed in a lot of ways

Their defensive personnel has some bright spots, but some gaping holes. I think they’ll be fine with better coaching (not guaranteed).

On offense they let the line get too old and unless Chris WIlliams comes back strong from his back problems they lost out last year.

I think they’ll concentrate on O and D line (sound familiar?) and try to pick up a good WR in rounds 2 or 3.

by Chicago Steeler on Feb 26, 2009 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Gimme Jacksonville

Just read up on the archives of last years, looks like fun. :)

The Patriots must have cooties or something?

I'll drink your Milkshake, I'll drink it up!

by Frank Mineo (DYMS) on Feb 26, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Speaking of which

I went to the steelers-pats game this year. With 5 or so minutes left, all of the pats “fans” starting leaving and the Steeler fans pushed into the front rows. After a good 3 minutes of the here we go chant, somebody started a chant where one guy would yell “Tom Brady’s got the” then the rest of the fans would clap. I thought it was pretty creative (and perhaps accurate).

by HereWeGo on Feb 26, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Blitz...

When approx will the mock draft be. I usually don’t get to check into the sight until around 6-8pm every night and I don’t want to screw it up for everyone else, but I could take the Rams if you are looking for three more mock participants…let me know.

by Heckler's Sports on Feb 26, 2009 7:59 PM EST reply actions

Haha

Jeez, give me the Raiders I guess. That should be fun :D
