Steelers guard Chris Kemoetau went to bed early Friday morning trying to decide between a $4 million-a-year offer from Pittsburgh and the New York Jets. The Steelers had hoped to sign Kemoeatu, who is considered one of the top guards on the market, before free agency.

I haven’t seen any update to this yet, so it seems like it’s a showdown between the Steelers and the Jets.

Haynesworth has agreed to terms with the Redskins. Via rotoworld:

The Redskins agreed to terms with Albert Haynesworth on a seven-year, $100 million contract. The deal includes $41 million guaranteed and could reach $115 million.

Fred Taylor’s run into the sunset took him straight to New England.

After visiting Buffalo and New England this week, Taylor decided to sign with the Patriots.

The agreement has been reached, Taylor is headed back to New England. After playing his first 11 NFL seasons with Jacksonville, he now is expected to finish his career as a Patriot.

I’m not sure it’s a big deal at this point in Taylor’s career, but if you’re going to go anywhere to rejuvinate your career as a RB, New England is probably the way to go.

Update on the Hated Ravens

Looks like former Falcons CB Dominique Foxworth will be visiting with the Ravens today. A deal could be done by tonight. This could mark the departure from the team of Samari Rolle (who owns a house that’s literally two miles away from me).

ILB Bart Scott seems New York bound. Apparently the deal offered by the Ravens was between $300k and $700k off of what Scott was looking for. Not a big difference, but Scott seems to have decided that it was close enough to free agency that he might as well see what he can get on the open market. Scott will be in New York today and a deal could be done by the end of the day. Word is that the Rams also have interest in Scott, but it seems any discussion the two parties may have will be contingent upon Scott getting out of New York.

MLB Ray Lewis may wind up in Denver. With former teammate Bart Scott apparently heading to New York, it seems Lewis may be poised to join up with former Ravens and current Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in Denver. This seems speculative at best at this point, but unless Dallas are putting up a ruse regarding their interest in Lewis, the Broncos would be a sensible landing spot for Lewis, with the Broncos having cut ties with last year’s MLB, Nate Webster.

Jason Brown, the great center for the Ravens last year, is on the radar of about a half-dozen teams. It appears that the Redskins, a team with “major” interest in his services will be unable to pursue the high-priced would-be guard after signing DT Haynesworth and re-signing CB DeAngelo Hall. Washington also appears to be working on a deal to bring OG Derrick Dockery back into their burgundy and gold fold. The Dolphins, on the other hand, appear to be unwilling to meet the monetary demands of Brown. The Rams, Chiefs, and several other teams seem to be in the mix for his services.

(Most information coming from Rotoworld)

Ray Lewis OUT in Baltimore
Sources close to Lewis were adamant Friday that one of the game’s greatest defensive players will not return to Baltimore and his career with the team is over.

Thus, one of Lewis’ confidants was asked if it were possible that the Ravens now could change their linebacker’s mind. "Not if you knew Ray like I knew Ray," was his response. He even mentioned retirement as a possibility ahead of returning to Baltimore and insisted it was not a negotiationg ploy. "That’s Ray," the source said.

For now, Lewis plans to take a couple of days, ponder his plans and then come up with his gameplan. But his gameplan now does not include the Ravens, according to those who know him.

NFL.com

This could be gamesmanship to be sure. Still, it’s ridiculous to me for Ray Lewis to bail out of Baltimore after the way they supported him following his murdering of a guy in Atlanta. Excuse me, I mean his alleged murdering of a guy in Atlanta.

I understand that this is a business, and that Lewis is 100% entitled to pursue the highest contract he is capable of signing. However, it appears based on the comments here that Lewis feels slighted by the team. For him to so easily forget the way that organization, across two seperate owners, propped him up as a great man and an even greater player, really highlights the ugliness Lewis’ character.

It will be interesting, as a Baltimore resident, to see how Ravens fans feel about Ray Lewis going forward.

I'm actually sad

that Scott and Lewis are leaving. I would much rather have seen the Ravens hand out crippling long term contracts for players who were never that great (Scott) or who aren’t good any more (Lewis). Their defense will be fine, unfortunately, as they have a bunch of young LB’s waiting for a chance. They have more money to sign Suggs and Ngata – the cornerstones of their front 7 – to long term deals.

I’m still a little surprised they’re letting Jason Brown go, but it’s hard to dish out that kind of money if you’re not hurting on the OL.

They’ll probably eventually recover, but everyone had sort of pegged Ray as the guy to keep the defense together when the DC went to NY. Now who maintains that continuity?

I wanted the ravens to either eat some big contracts or lose all their guys. Either one is good by me.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Feb 27, 2009 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy all the guys they’ve lost/are losing on defense. Lewis, Scott, McAllister, Leonard. They still have their big 3, though, in Ngata, Suggs, and Reed. It will definitely be a different defense – whether that’s a good or bad thing, we’ll see.

by BadMaafala on Feb 27, 2009 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

I think if Tavares Gooden can stay healthy, he’ll be an upgrade over Bart Scott. If nothing else, he won’t do the boneheaded things Scott did all too often to hurt the Ravens. Of course, ever since Hines Ward lit him up, Scott hasn’t been the playmaker that planted Ben Roethlisberger.

I don’t think replacing Ray’s production is a big deal at this point. However, you can say a lot of things about Lewis, but you cannot actually say he’s not a GREAT leader of men. There’s a reason they’ve have three D-coordinators with notable different coaching styles with almost identical results, and it’s because Ray Lewis can get his team up. Can Ed Reed take over that leadership role? Well, I certainly hope not, but I think it’s asking a lot of him, or anyone else. I don’t think there is a rookie LB out there who can bring anything close to the leadership of Ray Lewis, either. Great news for Steelers fans, to be sure.

"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard

by Brett Jones on Feb 27, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

They will be hurting on OL.

Gaither, Grubbs, and Yanda are great, and more importantly, young linemen. Brown was a great Center, as far as I was concerned. Now, with his departure, the only Center they have on the roster is Chris Chester, a guy who I thought would become their starter when drafted, but they seem to feel he cannot handle that position, as Chester worked as a backup OG last year.

At RT, Willie Anderson is an old man as linemen go, and Adam Terry, though young, is not particularly good while misses a good amount of time due to injuries.

Don’t get me wrong, the Ravens have a great O-Line compared to the Steelers, but they have some areas of concern, for sure.

"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard

by Brett Jones on Feb 27, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

If you have a decent LT and 2 above average guards, center really isn’t a big hole to fill. They could draft one in the 4th round and be fine. Jason Brown may have been their best interior OL, but that’s a lot of cash for an area they’re strong in regardless.

by BadMaafala on Feb 27, 2009 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

That’s true, they aren’t in dire need of upgrading their line. But they do have areas on concern on their line, even with the three pieces they have in place.

It still hurts me that they got Gaither in the supplemental draft for a 5th rounder.

BMac could be visitng the Cardinals today, says NFL.com

Adam Schefter of NFL. com said BMac might be in Arizona today to visit the Cardinals. Kind of figures. No other team probably knows him better than Ken Whisenhunt.

Now that Kemo has turned down the Steelers offer of $4M a year (I’m glad that he did), they might as well offer that money to Trai Essex and stick him at LG. Move Willie Colon inside to RG and let T. Hills or Jason Capizzi start at RT. Stapleton is your backup at C and both G spots and the loser between Hills or Capizzi is your swing tackle active on game day. Hey, it’d beat the OL we had for the past two years.

Thoughts?

by datruth4life on Feb 27, 2009 11:14 AM EST reply actions

What's wrong with Stapleton?

Sure, the Super Bowl wasn’t his best game, but he was reasonably sound for the rest of the season. Given that mix, I’d rather see Stapleton and Colon at guards and Essex at RT, unless Hillis or Capizzi can beat him out.

But it would be pathetic if we can’t pick up some OL help either in free agency (wish) or the first rounds of the draft.

by Steelin on Feb 27, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

The problem is that a steelers fans definition of “reasonably sound” is getting lower and lower.

I’d like stapleton to come back and with his performance at guard I have high expectations for him at center in a year. Stapleton started out strong this year and got worse down the stretch. Next year we will find out if that was due to stamina issues or if his technique was exposed by film from the first few games he played.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Feb 27, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

We all want Colon to move inside – but I think we have to let that dream go at some point. Colon is the RT this year and Max Starks is the LT. Hartwig is the center.

That leaves RG and LG. Stapleton could play RG again albeit with a question mark, but Essex at LG? The way I look at it Essex couldn’t beat out Colon or Starks for the tackle job, and couldn’t beat out Stapleton or Kemo for the starting guard spot. Where does that leave him in terms of talent? He looked decent at guard in the pre-season. If Essex is seen as the equal of Stapleton, then I shudder to think of the line that looks like:

Starks-Essex-Hartwig-Stapleton-Colon

That, to me, is not a viable line.

Starks-Essex-Hartwig-Colon-Hills/Capizzi does not seem any better.

I don’t think either of those are better than the ones we have had the past two years. The equal? Maybe, but even if they are a slight improvement they won’t be anything but a slight improvement. We need more. I’m comfortable having either of those lines if the steelers are planning on drafting some starting interior talent (if indeed that’s what Mack or Robinson are), but otherwise they are sticking to the status quo. As Tomlin would say, the standard is the standard and they did not meet the standard. I’d like to draft some talent like Mack to challenge the interior and at least have an upgrade in either guard spot with a veteran like SD’s Goff.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Feb 27, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

It sounds like a plan, but I do question whether Tomlin and Co. will ever see the wisdom in moving Colon inside, especially without a high draft pick/experiences starter to replace him at RT.

We might be able to keep Essex with a promise that he’ll actually get to compete for the RT/LG starting spots though. That and some extra cash, of course. He may not have Kemo’s road grading powers, but I’ll bet he’s more consistant.

If Mack or Othr (who some have dropping to the second round) is available when the Steelers pick and they pass on them both I may just have to hospitalized.

by BluegrassSteeler on Feb 27, 2009 11:21 AM EST reply actions

Keep an eye on FA linemen

Any team that is signing FAs right now is overpaying—otherwise, the player would be waiting for a better offer. But the longer a player stays on the market, the lower their price gets.

So far, of the top FA offensive lineman, only the Raven’s Brown seems to be drawing a lot of attention (so much for being under the radar). Still available are Khalif Barnes, OT, Jaguars; Jon Stinchcomb, OT, Saints; Matt Birk, OC, Vikings; and Tra Thomas, OT, Eagles. The longer these guys are out there, the better chance that one falls into our price range. But it is probably a long shot.

What Do I Know?

Apparently not as much as I thought. I haven’t been able to stomach Simmons since he recovered from diabetes. He was an injury prone revolving door at G. Yet, I had him penciled in as the starting RG next year because they just extended him and I assumed with the up front bonus they couldn’t afford the cap hit. WRONG. The Steelers cut him. That’s ok as I didn’t think he was the answer.

Always liked Stapleton as depth but not sure as a starter. As a rookie undrafted FA he was pancaking people for the one game he played before injury. He looked good enough on those couple plays for the Steelers to keep him. Last year he filled in admirably for Simmons until XLIII where he was terribly out played. I like him as a backup swing guy that can play G or C on game day. Unless he drastically improves, I am not sure about him as a starting G.

One area where I think I’m still correct is the draft. They will get 4 top athletes the first day if nothing changes and they don’t trade up. With 4 first day picks at the end of each round I think the Steelers will take a G at #1 unless no C has been taken. As much as Hartwig will not want to move to G the Steelers have had great luck taking the best player on the board at QB (Ben) TE (Miller) WR (Holmes) and will take a C if none have been selected and move Hartwig. With the other 3 first day picks I see them taking a OT, CB and WR. While many mock drafts have them taking a DE (which could happen) the Steelers system allows them to pick a DE on the second day and get good results. Aaron Smith and Keisel were both second day selections.

Bottom line; The Steelers don’t participate in FA and if a Steeler hasn’t been extended the odds are long that they will remain a Steeler. I have the utmost faith in the Steelers FO to get 92, 78 and 83 extended and under contract and draft some good players in April. The Steelers will be ok as long as a Rooney is at the helm and Ben is behind Center…whoever that Center may be.

De Angelo Hall

Is one lucky guy. He has struck gold twice in a row. How does he do it?

by jglo on Feb 27, 2009 1:35 PM EST reply actions

it's crazy

He gets a huge contract with the Raiders, sucks, gets cut after 8 games or something, plays reasonably well on a team that already has a good secondary, and suddenly is worth a second huge contract in as many years. Insane.

Living in the DC area

I love it – had a guy at work come up and go
“Sixburgh? huh – that’s nothing. Who wins March every year baby?”

Then he went back to his office and cried.

LOL

This just in

The Jets have decided to change their name to the New York Home for Aging and Mediocre AFC North Free Agents.

This news comes after the signing of Chris Kemoauteau, Bart Scott and their current pursuit of Cory Ivy.

It is also rumored that Jets might be interested in Kendall Simmons, Marvell Smith and Ravens RT Willie Anderson.

“We’re really high on Anderson” said an undisclosed source in the Jets front office. "Not will he cost a lot of money, but he is now both old and mediocre. Also he played for both the Ravens and the Bengals.

I used to sweat our legendary inaction during Free agency; now it is a source of pride and comfort.

Actually

Our FA pick-ups last year were great and directly contributed to our Super Bowl run.

I hope that we make the same kind of smart moves this year and shore up our areas of need.

The steelers have to wait until everyone else is up against the cap. If they show interest in someone that is usually a good sign that the player is good, and then we’ll have to compete for him.

interesting...

so now we (probably) know the staring 5 o-line… starks, chris k, hartwig, stapleton, colon. would still like to see an upgrade, either through FA or the draft, at guard. i don’t love chris k but i do feel better about the OL then i did 5 minutes ago. let’s us think more seriously about those d-line and CB needs too…

Great, we can have the same exact line as last year…Oh well, hopefully someone is drafted/acquired to compete with Stapleton because I doubt chris K is sitting on the bench at $4mil a year. You never know though…

They can always cut him if something better comes along.

Not really the MO of the Steelers’ organization, but stranger things have happened.

I’m sure there is some guaranteed money in the pot. The steelers see something in Chris K., and the first few games of the season most everyone did too. At the very least he has potential.

I’d feel much better about the O-line if we traded Mr. Z.

Chris K. inks 5-year deal

Steelers Re-sign Guard Chris K.

By John Harris, Tribune-Review

The Steelers re-signed starting left guard Chris Kemoeatu to a five-year, $20-million contract today, a day after the team released veteran guard Kendall Simmons.

Kemoeatu, 26, started all 16 games as the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII. He was the team’s sixth-round draft pick in 2005

Funny how

Perspective changes over time. I was never all that high on Kemo and I thought he had a year that was mediocre at best. But I am kind of happy to have him back as an option. I am not crazy about Ben playing behind that line, but if you are going to have guys who are not top talents, they should at least have some experience under their ample belts.

What I did not want to see was a re-shuffle of our line without a significant upgrade in talent. These guys are not great by any stretch of the imagination. But a full year of playing together means that they may well be much better next year. At least that’s what I am praying for.

The thought of someone signing Colon and thus, we being compensated with a 1st round draft pick makes me sad because I know it won’t happen.

Update- Taylor yet to sign either Scott

Apparently people jumpin to conclusions again, per SI neither have signed and Scott actually called the Ravens OzzieN from the Jets facility.. to give them a chance to match..

by BigDaddyTat2boy on Feb 27, 2009 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Scott has been offered a 5 year, $42 million offer, or $2 more over the life of the contract that the Jets offered him.

One would conclude that he would take the deal, but many previously concluded that he had signed with the Jets, so who knows how this will actually conclude?

Scott picks Jets over Ravens (Again)

ESPN.com has the story. It might even be true, this time.

Linebacker Bart Scott and the New York Jets agreed to a six-year deal worth $48 million on Friday, according to Scott’s agent Harold Lewis.

I hope for the Jets sake that his is a back-loaded deal.

Ray Lewis Open to Returning to Baltimore?

Schefter has changed his previous tune

When Ray Lewis‘ future in Baltimore was questioned, his former teammate Rod Woodson reached out to him.

After speaking with Lewis, Woodson reported that Lewis never said he wouldn’t return to the Ravens. He is open to go back to Baltimore. Lewis never told DeMarcus Ware that his dream was to play for the Cowboys despite published reports.

Lewis is in Florida with his kids relaxing and does not expect to make any decisions on his future until Monday.
