Cassel traded to Chiefs

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3942130

Its the second trade in the last two days between the Chiefs and the Patriots, with the Chiefs getting Vrabel yesterday. Pioli continues to bring some former Patriots over to try and rebuild the Chiefs. The question is was Cassel so great because of the system the Patriots have or because he's a great QB? He's going to have a great WR in Bowe and if Gonzalez sticks around the best TE possibly in the history of the NFL. A great get for the Chiefs in my opinion.

Oh Crap for 2 reasons

1. I was hoping to see the Pats stuck with two starting QB salaries.
2. The Pats now get something juicy from the Chiefs (TBA, though I’m guessing there will be some sweet draft picks in there).

Once upon a time, I hated the Raiders more than any other team. Then I hated the Cowboys. Then the Ravens. But the Patriots I think are the embodiment of pure evil.

Yeah, I was hoping they got stuck with 2 starter QB salaries as well. Oh well.

And

supposedly the Chiefs third overall pick is not involved in the trade???? WOW

by Jett on Feb 28, 2009 1:56 PM EST reply actions

From what I understadn

LJ, Gonzales, or Brian Waters may be involved. Which I assume would be why the 3rd overall pick wouldn’t be. I can understand why the Pats wouldn’t want a pick that high they don’t have very many needs, and I can’t think of any needs they have that would be worth spending a top 3 pick on, and that’s a lot of money to be investing in one player, especially considering draft picks are always question marks.

Maybe the Pats started to panic...

…after Minnesota took Sage Rosenfels. (How I’d hate to be a Vikings fan.) They thought lots of teams would be bidding for Cassell, but apparently, we weren’t the only ones who saw what the Steelers did to him. So the Pats decided to call upon their boy Pioli to bail them out.

by TURFgeek on Feb 28, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah plus there's the fact

Any team that traded for him was going to have to work out a new contract with Cassel, and it’s probably going to have to be an insanely expensive one too, so that probably lowered his trade value.

by Gina on Feb 28, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Apparently

all the Pats get from this deal is a second round draft pick (34th overall). Thats it.

by Jett on Feb 28, 2009 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Pretty good for the Pats

Considering the Pats drafted Cassell in the 7th round and now have turned that into a 2, I’d say they’ve done pretty well for themselves.

by worldtrip on Feb 28, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

+1

And it’s a very high 2nd rounder, probably a guy they will rank as first-round value. It also gives them flexibility to move up into the first round if they see a guy they really want. As much as I hate the Patriots they are one of the best at managing their player assets and their salary cap.

and one of Belichick's children, too

plus a case of Sam Adams, which cinched it

Well

at least we can give Cassel another butt-whooping ’cause we play KC next season.

by paulamalu on Feb 28, 2009 3:04 PM EST reply actions

Dang

I was hoping the Pats would get to keep him.

He wont be nearly as good in KC. And the bottom line was, he performed great against piss poor defenses.

When it came time to play the big boys, he got his ass spanked beet red.

I hate the Pats

actually I hate the ravens worse but the Pats are getting to be a close second…

Don’t look now but they have their 1st rounder plus 3 second rounders!!!!! And they signed Fred Taylor!!! And they just cleared a bunch of cap space by trading Cassel!!! Enough space, infact, to sign a quality veteran to back up Brady…say like Leftwich!!!

AAAaaaarrgghhhh!!!

by SteelerMike on Feb 28, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions

Seriously it doesn't even make sense

They go 16-0 in 07. Lose their all-world qb and still manage to win what 11 games? Now they’re getting their all-world qb back, have of the first 58 picks, and have 20 million in cap room.

Like I feel like this stuff only happens in madden.

by Gina on Feb 28, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

I was wondering who would back Brady up now

Are they going to rely on Kevin O’Connell or Matt Gutierrez? Who? Exactly.

Then again, Cassell was a big “who” this time last year.

I can’t see Leftwich going to another team just to play backup.

by TURFgeek on Feb 28, 2009 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

I can't say this is an incredibly informed opinion

since I’m not a scout or anyting, but I don’t think O’connel is a bad back up option at all. I think he was incredibly underrated coming out of a small cool and I think he could end up being a major steal. Just from what I’ve heard from pats fans and what I read about him pre and post draft I think they might consider him their qb of the future, and that if they didn’t run an insanely complex offense, or if Brady had gone down like mid-season he might have been given the starting job over Cassel.

by Gina on Feb 28, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Similar to the Steelers with Dixon

O’Connell probably won’t be ready this year but you never know. It took Cassell several years to learn the offense. The Pats just need to find a Charlie Batch type to babysit the backup QB position for a year or two at the most.

by steeler.lifer on Feb 28, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

sounds too much like ’O’Donnell’, he will choke at the wrong time.

by StinkBomb on Feb 28, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Leftwich

I don’t think Leftwich signs to another team as a backup, but I could be wrong.

I don't know about BL either but

the Pats do piss me off. I’m actually from NE, grew up there, but now live in the south. All my family, tons of them, are die hard Pats fans. Since about age 6, I’ve been a Steeler fanatic…never a Pats fan…it was brutual those years we lost in the AFC Championships to them but…i was in my glory when they lost to the Giants…I loved visiting my family a couple months after their loss…they were still pissed bigtime…I repeat bigtime…I had to stoke the flame…“so what happend on the last drive when the Giants scored their winning TD” My brothers, cousins, dad still had steam coming out of their ears…I loved it…and just smiled!!

But, now, I’ll admit, I am worried. God, all those picks. Plus, we know Belicheck is a great judge of talent so it’s not like he’s going to miss on all those picks. Tons of cap space…AAAAaaaarrrghhhh!!!!

We can always hope from a little help from our favorite little microbe…Mr. Staphylococcus Aureus….come on now, everyone repeat after me…GO STAPH GO, GO STAPH GO, GO STAPH GO….

I’m just saying…

by SteelerMike on Feb 28, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

I hate em, and they stank!!!

It pisses me off how they get draft picks like nobodys business.

Like even the year they took a first rounder from them for cheating, they had ANOTHER first rounder.

Staph only works in cleveland….

Its ok they wont be great on defense, and so they wont dominate as much anymore. And pretty boy is still undetermined.

by Mechem on Mar 1, 2009 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

NE

NE is a well run organization. You knew they would get something for Cassel I just hoped it wouldn’t be a huge haul. Moving Vrabel and Cassel for a 2nd rounder is okay, and they can sigh in relief that they didn’t get stuck with Cassel’s huge contract.

Make sense for the Chiefs too. Cassel might be overrated, but he’ll certainly be better this year than anyone else the could sign or draft. And Vrabel is gravy. KC is in a desperate situation, they need to get this team moving in the right direction.

Air Holmes

Good lord, he did it again. He’s only about two and a half hours late so he’s getting faster.

by 13thieves on Feb 28, 2009 4:33 PM EST reply actions

13 thieves. I didn’t do it again. I was half way through writing my post when I realized I had to drive down to a doctors appointment and a hair cut after that. I came back finished the post then published it. This guy doesn’t even have what the Patriots got. How could I copy when I put what they got in return. Also, I didn’t even notice it was there until I just now was looking through the posts!

Proof that Air Holmes reads the posts.

Maybe next time he’ll do it before he posts his own.
