More on Tomlin

As you can tell I am glad Tomlin is our coach.  I just want to talk a little more in my usually bulleted format.  Every time I read about him it impresses me more.  So I’m just going to throw some random things together to paint a picture.

1.       Imagine what he faced when he was hired as coach.  He took over a team that wanted it’s popular assistant coaches to take over.  Not only that he comes in very young and coaching a team full of players with rings.  He comes in a traditional 4-3 coach taking over a 3-4 team.  He is the boss of a coaching legend in Dick LeBeau.  He has very strong D personality leaders (let me know if you need an explanation) on both sides of the ball (Porter and Faneca).  Conventional wisdom would say you have to come in and bring whole sale change right away.  This would be the time to because the team was not very focused the previous year and learning something new should increase focus.  Instead Tomlin realizes that he can establish his authority and learn at the same time while keeping what has worked in place.  He makes all the right moves and says the right things.  It’s like he’s a master chess player.  He knows the next move before he has to make it.  I imagine if he would have released LeBeau, he just may have been coaching the Cardinals defense in the Super Bowl and we may have been watching.

2.       Every time Tomlin is asked a question he gives answers that most people wouldn’t even think about saying.

Some examples:

A.      When asked  what he thought of his players saying “He’s a better coach this year than last.”  He didn’t confirm or deny anything.  His answer in a nutshell was “I’m their boss they aren’t mine.”

B.      He helped Willie Parker get his focus back when Willie was agonizing over the lack of a running game.  Tomlin said “Every morning I come to work, I walk past five Lombardis, not five rushing titles”.  Now it’s six.

C.      Trust me Tomlin is celebrating this Super Bowl with the team, but he sent a message when he said “We are 30 days behind the rest of the league.”  Some say “dang can’t you just enjoy the win? “ No, you can’t JUST enjoy the win.  You CAN enjoy it and still remember there is still next year.  That’s his way of saying enjoy it fellas and get some rest, but remember we still have a job to do.  That is classic.  It keeps you on an even keel.  If you take this win as an end then it will be hard to get you back up.  It keeps you grounded.  It might even make you ride your motorcycle with a helmet (think about how this relates).

3.       Realize what happened here.  A second year head coach that is 36 years old took a team  and made it his.  He did this with a coaching legend under his leadership, an offensive coordinator (and O-line coach) that had some success in the past but was not greatly admired by some.   Let the record show that I like Arians.  He handled criticism of his team and controversies  throughout the year very well.  He didn’t let that affect his game planning.  He knew his personnel and got the most out of them.  Not only that he made changes where needed from last year.  From practicing without pads late in the year to letting the veterans take Wednesdays off.

4.       Not only can Tomlin relate to his players and ownership, he can relate to us (the fans).    That’s no small feat.  He’s from Hampton VA.  All my kids were born there.  That area does not have even close to the mentality of Pittsburgh.  Tomlin does his homework.  Not only that, he aces most of his tests.  The ones he doesn’t ace, he asks for retakes and gets it right the next time.

5.       I know,  “everybody loves a winner” and “the coaches get too much credit for wins” and “add your cliché here”, but I, as many of you have like Tomlin from day one.   He wins games with strong defense.  He establishes that identity.  On offense he takes what you give him.  If you let him run he’s running.  If you stop the run you have to deal with Ben.  It’s funny how people used to say we were so predictable.  Now we have an offense that is not predictable and people say we can’t establish the run.  You can establish an identity on offense without being one dimensional.  It’s like this; my plan to beat you is to either punch you in the face or kick you in the face.  I can do both.  You have to figure out which I’m going to do.  Tomlin did a good job of Knowing what his offense was capable of and exploiting the other team’s weaknesses.  I know you know what I’m saying.

6.       I said it before but you know the affect a coach has on its team when they start to sound like their coach.  You can hear Tomlin when they speak sometimes and you don’t even have to hear “Coach Tomlin said” before it.  Some call them Tomlinisms.

7.       Ok this is off topic, but I didn’t want to make a post on it because it’s brief.   James Harrison was not only hilarious in media week with his sound bytes,  he put a big fat exclamation mark on an awesome season.  This Super Bowl took on the persona of Super Bowl 14.  Harrison’s pick 6 kind of reminded me of Lambert’s pick in SB XIV.  It was a momentum swinger at a crucial time.  Lambert’s indirectly attributed to 6, but it was crucial none the less.  The ending was different but it had a similar feel.  It was much easier to the heart at 13 years old than 42 though.

For sure

I even forgot to add in how he said “We are not repeating or defending anything” when asked about a repeat. You listen to him and you say “Yeah, he’s right.” His answers to questions are not only entertaining, but thought provoking

Continued

Why he’s a winner: he does not want to take a moment off to enjoy the victory (although I’m sure he’ll enjoy it while he works). Many coaches would bask in their triumpth and many people get complacent after they reach the top. I don’t think this will be a problem with the Tonmlinator.

True

Gotta love it. Also, we already know that if anything in his approach fails he’s good at adjusting appropriately.

My favorite part of this whole thing was when Tomlin was handed the Lombardi he seemed to already be thinking of what was going to happen next.

During post game celebration on the field

he was asked about Fitz’s last TD…“I was basically over it when he crossed the goal line…”

Classic Tomlin. No whinning, panic, or even a hint of desperation. It’s so important the feelings a coach projects to his players…not so much through his words but his mannerisms, body language, and disposition.

Then he finished the above quote with a display of emotion taling about “Steeler football being 60 minutes…”.

I was at the game and went nuts…

NFL.com just posted their game of the week, I wonder which it was? (http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80e93513)

Worth watching just for some sideline banter from Tomlin

MT (to ref): Brace yourself.
Ref: For?
MT: If you guys take this TD off the board.
Ref: Oh don’t yell at me, okay?
MT: I can’t promise you that

thanks for the video

…i teared up watching it again. especially seeing BBen and Hines at the end, waiting for the defense to stop the Cards…

…what killed me though was that 4th quarter hearing “Warner up the middle” “Warner throws up the middle”…ugh…it still makes me angry LOL

thanks for the link!

Upon further review, I gotta say, Ben would’ve received my vote for MVP. His ability to make plays when the defenders were all over him was amazing.

another great moment from the game of the week:

discussing whether or not warner fumbled or not (the first time), tomlin is talking to charlie batch and he says that he thinks it will get overturned because of the tuck rule. then he looks at charlie batch and says, “nice sweatshirt. where’d you get that, robinson town center? i know you didn’t get it out of our equipment room.”

i am just amazed at how cool he is under pressure. i have become a huge tomlin fan. i have commented on it elsewhere, but i absolutely love this pic: he has become such a solid leader in two years. thanks for the post, arn.

The best was

seeing Tomlin during the parade in Pittsburgh. The smile on his face, walking up to the fans…I swear I’ve never seen him smile as big and for as long as he did on Tuesday!

I am really glad he’s our coach. He’s perfect for Pittsburgh

Yes.

We as Steeler fans are blessed to have him as our coach as any team would be.

I just hope people dont start changing their love for him when times get tough. Some of the fans on this blog-site are a little two-faced. You know who you are.

Go Steelers!

"We are 30 days behind the rest of the league."

I promise I was starting to think Tomlin was pretty damn awesome before he won a sixth Lombardi Trophy (did anyone refer to SB wins like that before the T-man?), but that statement is really profound.

We’ve been wasting time chasing a Superbowl Championship while two thirds of the league has had a month to make moves.

Wow. This guy is special.

The best testament to Mike Tomlin that I've seen

is that his players are starting to talk like him. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a Steelers player refer to the team as a “group of men,” or when they talk about practice or execution or an upcoming gameplan, its always “we’re going to do what we do, and that’s play Steeler football.”

Kinda generic, I know…but it’s something that I’ve noticed.

This will not be Tomlin’s only Lombardi in Pittsburgh…he’s cut from a different mold, a born leader.

My favorite Tomlin quote is

“It’s not what you are capable of……it’s what your willing to do.” Jesus, does that not personify the man, the work ethic and Steeler’s Nation?

I wasn't hired for my disposition!

If you are a coach

I would get out a pencil and pad everytime you hear him speak. As a matter of fact I have been to numerous coaching clinics being taught by NFL and D-1 College coaches and I think I would pay double what I paid for the most expensive one to have a day with Tomlin to pick his brain and study him. Granted he’s not a god but he’s got what we call “IT”. He’s the type of guy that a young man wanting to become a good coach would want to shadow. They have programs that can get that done but you won’t get any pay. Darn it I’m rambling….

made this comment on another post

I think its going to be an extremely interesting offseason!! I doubted a lot of things that happened last offseason, but it sure did work, despite the injuries, OL, relatively poor offense (compared to last year) and schedule. I for one knew we had talent looking at the roster, but i can honestly say i didn’t expect 15-4, wow! Tomlin is even smarter than we’re starting to believe. And after this…. no telling how much decision power he’ll have. I feel like he’s getting ready to put his mark on a run like we’ve never seen. I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

Me too

We know how well he handled getting them there and winning. It will be interesting to see how Tomlin manages success.

I watched all the videos about the Steelers angle of the Super Bowl

from NFL.com, and I have to say Tomlin is the man.

And, going to point #6,

I said it before but you know the affect a coach has on its team when they start to sound like their coach.

I watched a video about James Squared in the Pro Bowl (Harrison and Farrior), and I can’t for the life of me remember the question, but Farrior’s answer was “it is what it is”.

I’ll have to go back to NFL.com and look up the question.
