Stealing the Super Bowl (why the Steelers weren't that good this year)

It's not as brutal as I made it look, I just wanted to point out a couple of facts of the year.

First off Pittsburgh may have had the #1 ranked defense by pts allowed per game, but it in reality, the last game of the season in which the Titans decided not to play and the Steelers did moreso than the Titans spoiled both teams stats (defensively) in an opposite fashion.

Secondly the Steelers may have had one of the strongest schedules, but guess what...you couldn't beat any of the teams that actually made your schedule tough.

You lost to the Eagles, Giants, Colts, and Titans. Probably would have lost again in the postseason, but instead faced teams you had beaten already.

This year's Steelers probably had one of the easiest roads to the Super Bowl in recent history.  Facing a somehow overrated Chargers team that only went 8-8.  Also facing a Ravens team you know inside and out and has zero offense, and a defense facing a few minor injuries, that would have lost to the Titans 9 out of every 10 times.  I personally thought the Cardinals weren't as bad as their record and were actually the hardest team you faced (in postseason), but in order to win it, you needed a interception for a touchdown, otherwise the game in my mind could have been over by the 3rd quarter (but it's not like it was luck or something you just outplayed on that play, which decided the game).

Fortunately you've already clinched next year's division.

Maybe so, but having the sixth Lombardi trophy behind glass…isn’t that worth more than an arbitrary ranking?

Dolphins Fan?

Really. Your team went 1-15 two years ago and you are trying to knock a Super Bowl champ? Go cling to the trophy your team won 30 years ago and leave us.

The Steelers were the best team all season, laugh at us all you want, but next year you guys have the hardest schedule. You guys will win 6 games and bitch about how hard life is. Go rub canola oil on your grandma

Actually

We don’t have to be that good. All we have to do is beat everyone except the Steelers, Titans, Falcons, Patriots(once) and make it to the playoffs, and as long we don’t face any of them we’ll win the superbowl.

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

With brady coming back and now the smoke and mirrors of the wildcat is gone, you won’t beat the Pats

eh dont count on it

Truthfully Miami has no real losses this year in the offseason. I believe they can improve. Although the offense needs to get real and legit.

The pats are not that great and their sched was weak and thats why they managed 11-5.

Omg, a last second TD to beat the chiefs. Yeah I’m impressed.

by Mechem on Feb 6, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agree

that miami can improve, but the only reason why they beat the pats in the first place was because that was the first game that the wildcat was introduced. that was the ony reason why they beat them, now with no more tricks to expose, its gonna be hard for that offense to keep up with brady and company, that defense would have to be vastly improved and I just don’t so see it

As the youngest coach to ever win a superbowl would say, “We are not the schedule makers. We go out and compete against the next group of men that are assigned to us. All 32 of these proffesional football teams are capable of winning a footbal game. This year we won that games that we needed to win to be succesful.”

Superbowl Champions

Is there anything more that need to be said… Oh wait there is.

We beat division champion Chargers… twice.
We beat AFC runner up Baltimore… three times.
We beat New England… at New England.
We beat everyone’s Superbowl pick the Dallas Cowboys, with Romo.
And let me think… we beat everyone we had to in order to do what we set out to do. Six time Champions.

I don't want to get personal

As I believe you are a Dolphins fan, and I respect your team alot. My father is a Dolphins fan from way back, so I know your history pretty well. I learned about Czonka, Mercury Morris, Jim Kiik and the rest, and if I could choose a second team in the AFC, the Dolphins would be right up there. So please do not get offended by what I’m about to say.

You lost to Baltimore (twice), New England (at home), Houston (who we destroyed), and Arizona (who I think we beat, hopefully somebody can back me up on that). Does that diminnish the great year you had?

.

I wasn’t focusing on this year, I actually changed the name from “(why the Steelers shouldn’t be the favorites)” to “(why they weren’t that good)”. I’m just showing that they weren’t that good this year, I don’t see why people are picking them for next year by the masses (I know they aren’t just picking them). I realize the Dolphins were a joke. We beat nobody (best team we beat was San Diego and NE early in the season). Same with NE. I don’t think we had a good season we had one of the easiest schedules in the league and we lost to the best teams we faced just like you guys, except somehow you guys pulled off the Super Bowl and we’re almost on the same level just one step back.

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

by Beck4Mercy on Feb 5, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still struggling

to grasp the “not that good” statement, and you hit me with the “we’re almost on the same level” stuff. Miami had a great year, and I mean great. Don’t sell yourself short. I don’t have to remind you of two seasons ago, and to have that year, then have change over in as many places as you had (front office, coaching staff, players on all sides of the ball) you had a GREAT year.
But.. if you’re only one step behind us you take a hell of a lot longer strides than I do. And that hopefully isn’t the shot to the gut it may seem. I think you are still a year or two from legit playoff contention, and when your team is there, I think it will be time to change QB’s (because of age not talent). But I still could see y’all being a pain in the side of alot of good teams.

Every season

The difference between the really good teams and the average teams is razor thin. I few injuries here, a couple timely plays there, and everything could be different.

Go ahead and pick out a few isolated facts and say the Steelers weren’t that good, a couple breaks here or there and things are different. That’s true every year of every super bowl winner. C’est la vie. The fact remains the Steelers are the super bowl champs, and therefore the best team of this year.

By the way, you got your facts backwards about the Steelers – Titans game. The Titans needed that much more than the Steelers, and it showed on the field. The Steelers didn’t play nearly with as much energy as the Titans did that day, and I also firmly believe that Dick Lebeau had them playing a much more vanilla defense and didn’t show much in anticipation of them potentially playing in the playoffs, which is why the Titans were the only team to gain over 300 yards against the Steelers in the entire regular season.

by worldtrip on Feb 5, 2009 1:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Miscommunication

I was talking about the game where…. The final game of the regular season where Pittsburgh I believe shut out Cleveland and the Titans got disowned by the Colts. I don’t think Steelers needed to play that game for the bye and the Titans didn’t so they didn’t.

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

by Beck4Mercy on Feb 5, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Steelers were ranked #1 in scoring

before that game and Tenn wasn’t going to catch or pass them in that category. Please don’t try and argue that the Steelers D was overrated – you will be wrong, very wrong.

by 703Steeler on Feb 5, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah unless the Steelers gave up like 50 points to the Browns and the Titans held Indy to nothing the Steelers still would have led the league in points allowed.

Take out the last game

Regular Season Stats from NFL.com
Steelers allowed 223 pts/16=13.9
Titans allowed 234 pts/16=14.6

The last game of the year
PIT beats CLE 31-0
TEN loses IND 0-23

Take it out
Steelers allowed 223 pts/15=14.9
Titans allowed 211/15=14.1

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

by Beck4Mercy on Feb 5, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can't believe I am responding to this

So you’re argument is that one of the reasons the Steelers will not be good next year and will lose in the first round of the playoffs is because if you removed the last game of the season, the Steelers would only have had the second best scoring defense in the entire league rather than the best?

Am I understanding this correctly?

by worldtrip on Feb 5, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Read the title of the article

“Stealing the Super Bowl (why the Steelers weren’t that good this year)”
And I have also said that they still won’t be that good next year, but that is because I think they are already behind other teams Titans and Giants. Next year they will far farther behind as the young teams (Falcons, Green Bay possible sleeper for me) and Patriots.

But I just don’t want these Steelers to be in talk with best Super Bowl Champs ever. I haven’t heard that really, but just decided I’d throw this article out there anyways.

I guess I should have thought twice before creating my profile's name.

Joke.

by steelguy99 on Feb 5, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute...

If you are going to throw out the "but in order to win it, you needed a interception for a touchdown, otherwise the game in my mind could have been over by the 3rd quarter " crap. We can go back and look at the Giants and Colts games – where if we don’t lose our long snapper or Ike doesn’t tip that long TD to Wayne and Ben throw two silly picks we could have had those over in the 3rd quarter.

Would we be legit Champions according to Becker?
Goes both ways Becker.

Unlike College, in the NFL the champions are decided ON the field. If the Titans were so great why didn’t they beat the lowly Ravens? If the Chargers were so over-rated how did the Mighty Mighty Colts lose to them even with a gift TD where the Chargers D was in a TV timeout while Wayne was streaking for a TD.

Your arguments are weak much like the team you root for, its fine if you want to hate the Steelers, but bring some facts to the table not your uneducated ignorant opinions.

Some Defensive Facts for you since you seem to be rather ignorant about our Def this year:

  1. Overall Defense in Yds per Game, Pts Per game, Yds per play, Passing Yds Per game.
  2. vs the Run, in # of sacks

There are more if you need them let us know.

But they weren’t that good? Look at the offensive ranks of the teams they played and look at what they did against the Steelers – we only played 5 teams in the bottom half (based on scoring as that is the one that matters) of Off (Hou, Cin, Clev, Jac, and Was) we did play Cin and Cle twice so that 7 of the 16 games were against ‘below avg’ offenses. Almost all of the others were held below their season AVG in almost every category. – oh yeah and that Bal team with no O was a top 5 rush team – what did they do in 3 games against the Steelers? NADA.

Youcan talk about the O and its less than spectacular performance overall this year – but talk about the D is going to get you in trouble and make you look dumb.

by 703Steeler on Feb 5, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

basically

if you use this guys argument, if you throw out the vikings game against the cardinals where the cards only ran it 7 times, then the steelers would be the #1 rushing defense too, also you can throw out the game the cowboys had against the giants then the steelers would have the most sacks in the nfl too lol. LOOK you can’t have it both ways if you wanna take away games, you can do it for both sides. This guy is such a joke.

Stolen?

In order to steal something, someone else has to have it…

So, just who was the Super Bowl Champion that the Steelers stole the title from?

New England? Nope, the Steelers beat them — at home. The Dolphins? They couldn’t make it past a Baltimore team that the Steelers beat three times. To Colts? They lost to a Chargers team that The Steelers beat twice.

Just who do you think was supposed to be the AFC champion that the Steelers “stole” the title from?

Let me see

I have to remind you that this is not the BCS. Your logic is faulty. Follow me because you obviously didn’t think before you posted this. Tennessee lost to the Ravens whom the Titans beat earlier in the year. The Cardinals beat the Eagles that who haneded their rearend to them earlier. How come the Titans didn’t beat a team they beat in the regular season? That’s all I have to say. gee whiz. Typical. It’s not our fault the Dolphins stink and can’t beat the Ravens. It’s also not our fault the Titans choked against a team we beat 3 times this year. If the Colts can’t beat the Chargers then who do you blame. When the playoffs came we beat all contenders. Good teams win when it counts. That’s why the Dolphins watched us win the Super Bowl. I’m sorry you’re hurt, but to be the man you have to beat the man and you can’t even beat the man that got beat.

"I just wanted to point out a couple of facts of the year"

“in reality, the last game of the season in which the Titans decided not to play and the Steelers did moreso than the Titans spoiled both teams stats (defensively) in an opposite fashion.”
Not really a fact.

you couldn’t beat any of the teams that actually made your schedule tough.
Baltimore would like to point out that this, too, is not actually a fact.

This year’s Steelers probably had one of the easiest roads to the Super Bowl in recent history
Tip: If it’s got the word ‘probably’ in, it’s probably not a fact.

a Ravens team… that would have lost to the Titans 9 out of every 10 times
Not a fact.

the game in my mind could have been over by the 3rd quarter

So… no facts at all then. That’s cool, opinions are fine, but trying to pass them off as anything else is less clever.

Does that mean they deserved to be in the Super Bowl? Look at it this way. The Titans’ super Bowl was Dec 21. They acted like it. From what you say no teams were any good this year. The Eagles couldn’t beat the Cardinals, The Giants couldn’t beat the Eagles. The colts couldn’t beat the Chargers. The Titans couldn’t beat the Ravens. We beat the Ravens and Chargers. • A fact, but one which contradicts your argument.
  • A fact, but one which is neither here nor there really. The Steelers had already faced a full-strength Colts team, and even if the Titans had only given up their season average number of points they would still have had a worse PAperG than we did.
  • Only a fact if you accept those are the only 4 teams which made our schedule tough. The eleven game winners in Baltimore and New England would take issue with that, as would the Cowboys, who were going along quite niceley before they ran into Pittsburgh.
  • Only the ‘we faced teams we’d beaten already’ part is a fact.

New England

The Patriots were not as good last year as they have been. Just compare them to the Dolphins they practically have the same exact wins, except they lost to Chargers, but beat the Cardinals after they had packed it in.
I’m not saying they’re overrated from now. Just last year’s Patriots were overrated, just like the Dolphins.

Toughest schedule in the NFL this year

and they went 12-4. Yes, they lost 4 games to 4 very tough opponents. They beat Chargers twice, who beat the mighty Colts. Beat the Ravens 3 times (that’s an 11-5 team). Then beat Cardinals, who beat the Eagles, who beat the Giants.

So, do you have any sort of logic to your argument? It appears to be very lacking.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Feb 5, 2009 3:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Steelers are World Champs

That says it all. They beat who they had to beat and that’s all ANY NFL team has to do. If other “tougher” teams didn’t get a shot at the Steelers, well that’s their problem.

There hasn’t been a perfect team since ’72 and ALL teams have flaws, matchups are matchups. Teams still have to go out and execute. End of story. The Giants, Eagles, Colts or whatever….they all lost.

Let’s not make excuses for these other teams….OH the Pats didn’t have Brady and if they did OOO OOO OOO. The steelers had major injuries to the O line and to FWP. We can go on and on with the What Ifs.

Um, if I'm not mistaken

The 2000 Ravens D scored more points by their defense alone in three playoff games (21) than they allowed opposing offenses to score in those 3 games (20). What logic are you using that negates a defensive score or lessens the importance of a momentum turning play? If you check the stats, the Cards only managed 7 points and about 137 yards passing offense until the 4th quarter. And, like a true championship team, when the other teams stars made great plays, our offense picked us up and drove down the field to win the game. A true TEAM victory, much like the entire season, where Offense, Defense and Special Teams each made huge plays to win games. I don’t care if we are favored to win the Super Bowl next year. All of that crap is for Vegas. What I do know is that the 2009 Steelers will be a vetteran team of proven winners that will come prepared to play. Oh, and I think we get to play the ’fins next year. Should be fun.

One more thing.....

Any sports team goes through growth over the course of a season. Some teams grow, others go badly…due to injuries or whatever.

My point is, if you’re gonna say the Steelers couldn’t beat the Giants or Eagles and therefore weren’t as good…..well then you better be prepared to consider the fact that during that time period, the Steelers were a team that had major injuries and and O line that had to grow and compensate for that. By the same token, the Giants had lost Plaxico. So, would the Steelers beat the Giants a second time when they were in much better shape? Same thing for the Eagles. They’d have to play the game to find out. But I can guess pretty good that it would be a DIFFERENT kind of game.

Love the Troll

Always makes for an entertaining thread.

I also love the “facts” of his “logic.”

1. The Steelers couldn’t beat any ot the teams that made the schedule tough…

Well, except for San Diego (twice), Baltimore (3 times), New England, and Dallas — all play-off contenders.

2. Steelers lost to the Eagles and “probably” wouldn’t have beat them in post-season

Yeah, because NO TEAM that lost to the eagles beat them in Post Season… oh…right, except for the Cardinals… Well, mabe he meant the Titans. Because no team that they beat in the regular season could have beat them in the post season… oh…wait… the Ravens did…

My favorite though was:

3. You needed an interception to win the Super Bowl…

Hmmm.. last I checked James Harrison was a Pittsburgh Steeler… whcih means the STEELERS MADE A PLAY. That’s like saying: “The Cardinals needed a touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to take the lead…”

1. Dont forget

We beat the Skin’s right after they walloped Dallas. In their house (which we made our house)

Beating the Jag’s on the road was rough.

Beating the Pats on the road was hard but we made it look easy.

Last I checked we beat a Houston team that BEAT the titans.

The teams we lost to.

This is hilarious. You are basically throwing out the game itself and solely looking at the loss.

Eagles. We held them to 13 points offensively. We were a TD away the whole game. Very early in our O-lines development.

Giants. We were about to go up 21-7 on them but a holding withdrew a TD. On top of that, Silverback super long snapped the game out of reach. Fool.

Colts. Ike Taylor tipped the biggest play of the game to Sir Reginald Waynesworth. Enough said.

Ten’Teeth Titans.
They legitimately won, but Ben coughed up fumbles all day.

Any chance of renaming this thread

From “Stealing The Superbowl” to STEELING the Superbowl. No real importance to this comment, just thought it would be a more appropriate title.

Its so nice that we don't have a BCS system in pro football

So that these inane arguments are totally and completely meaningless.

I could make and argument about why the Titans or the Giants are the best team in football. Heck I could make an argument about why the Lions are the best team in football. But it doesn’t matter a whole lot. We aren’t playing for a higher BCS ranking, we aren’t playing for fantasy football points, or (as our coach likes to reminds us) style points. We definitely aren’t playing to build a reality television audience. We also aren’t playing to have a perfect season, win rushing titles, passing titles, pro-bowls, individual accolades or to win statement games.

The Steelers play to win Super Bowls. Its an imperfect science. It requires skill, resolve, cohesion, sacrifice (of personal goals for team goals), hard work, great coaching and yes a bit of luck.

But when you look at this team and what its done year in year out almost every year in the past decade to put themselves in position to win a Super Bowl, its hard to argue that they are not an elite franchise built to win Super Bowls.

I want to see even an attempt at an argument on the Lions being the best team in football...

That would win you a spot as spinner of the year, and you coulda worked for the white house when king george was on the throne. :)

I know how

The Pirates had a winning record against the Giants and Philadelphia split. The Pirates scored more runs against the Giants than the Phillies did. The Pirates would have had more wins if they wouldn’t have brought up the Minor Leaguers in Sep. Also since the World Series is only a seven game series the Pirates outperformed the Phillies for a 6 game span if you use the 6 games both teams played the Giants. The Giants are a bad team. Since the Phillies can’t even win a series against a bad team that the Pirates won a series against and the Phillies won the World Series they had to have stolen it. And just think that should have been the Pirates. They got it wrong.

should consider opening up a PR firm or going into politics. I think we can count on Beck to help us. We could call ourselves the “Spinning Tops” or “Spit and Spin”

by SteelerBuddha on Feb 6, 2009 2:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

What you say Beck? You got skillz. We need someone to keep making those smoke screens so we can get our points across undetected. We have work to do. We need to show why the Lions deserved a Super Bowl this year, The Pirates deserved the World Series and the Miami Heat got ripped off by the Celtics and took the NBA finals. After that we are going to talk all major American sports to implement the BCS model for pro sports.

I'm sorry, but how mentally incapable are you...

to come onto a Steelers fan site and try to tell us we actually weren’t all that great.

The Steelers won the Superbowl meaning that they in fact are that good. You really don’t understand football at all. It doesn’t matter if your not the best statistically, which the Steelers were in many categories, but as long as you put up more points than the other team, you win. The Steelers were only handily beaten by two teams this year; the Eagles and Titans, while the other two losses came down to the wire and were just us having a bad day. The Giants game was ours to win, but then our long snapper’s knee collapsed, and we had no one to back him up. We effectively shut down some of the best offenses in all of football. And the Titans game I believe was the game were 21 of their 31 points were set up by Steeler turnovers. Then, when it mattered most, the Steelers played an incredible two minute drill and scored a touchdown for the ages. Bye Bye Beck4Mercy cause you won’t get any mercy here.

About that

The eagles beat us but we held their mighty O to 13 points. So lets not feel like we got our asses kicked there.

And the Ten’Teeth Titans game was a joke with Roethlisberger having a terrible day, and those assholes returning that last pick for 6 just to rub it in.

But they stomped on the towel and therefore have been cursed to go to NFL Hell

Oh yea I know that we weren’t dominated in the Eagles game, but our Offense was never in that game while I remember our D having a real good game that day.

actually

It was in there when lefty took us to the 20 and Tomlin gave up on the damn game and wouldnt kick a FG.

You kick that FG, not only do points matter in the league, but you get the OS Kick and you have the ball with 1:05 left to go.

This sounds so familiar. The Seahawks said the same thing, last Superbowl. It’s “any given Sunday” – I believe that is what makes football exciting. No one stole anything. Stop with the excuses.

Undefeated Season

Its funny a Dolphin Fan criticizing so called easy path, have you checked the winning percentages of your undefeated season? I believe the percentage was .400 or lower and then you played an old and weakass Redskin team.

You are probably too young to remember that which really shows your lack of credibility.

Win something before you criticize a franchise that has 3 times the championship trophies you have.

Perhaps this was our evil plan

Yes, we played it out this way on purpose. After the refs not giving us the TD in the first quarter..
Tomlin: Ben, why don’t we scare everyone and wait until the last 30 seconds of the game, then we will have Holmes stand on his toes, like a ballet dancer, in the end zone and catch the ball between two Cardinals players. That way we can steal the Superbowl from the Cardinals.
Ben: Wow, that would be really exciting. Afterall, I don’t really care about Superbowl rings anyway.
NOT!

This is what Colin Cowherd (ESPN Radio) said Monday after the Super Bowl:

“Of the 7 hardest schedules in 2008, 6 teams had losing records. The Steelers were 15-4. They were consistently the best team in the NFL, from start to finish.”

So, if the Steelers weren’t that good, yet won the Super Bowl, how bad was the rest of the league this year? It must have been the worst year for the NFL in years.

Beck4Mercy…you’re a clown, get the fuck outta here. Go back to your shanty, pop in Ace Ventura Pet Detective, and think of a happy place…cuz the only way the Fins’ are going back to the Super Bowl, is in the movies…

…in order to win it, you needed a interception for a touchdown, otherwise the game in my mind could have been over by the 3rd quarter…

Good thing the refs gave us a 4th quarter, huh? That’s a special favor they do only for us.

Whenever I read a post like this....

All i can think of is that this guy is obviously a fan of his team. I would expect anyway.

So, he came up with several ridiculous reasons as to why our team isn’t all that good, but seeing as how our team won the super bowl we could probably come up with twice as many solid reasons as to why his team isn’t good at all.

BECK4Mercy, STFU!
