The Steelers Combine Interests
During the NFL Combine, the Steelers were reported to have interviewed several players who are listed below. This may give us a glimpse at the Steeler's thinking for the upcoming draft. A few names that are missing are Jarron Gilbert DE, Max Unger C/OG/OT, and Eric Wood C. It will be interesting to see who is brought into Pittsburgh for visits, and who Tomlin goes out to see at Pro Days.
List of players that the Steelers interviewed at the Combine:
Alex Boone - Off field problems but very big, strong and athletic. He may be a value in the 3rd round - OT, Ohio St. 6'7/328 304 225 lbs/33 x
A.Q. Shipley - Awarded the best Center in College football in 2008 but very short. Probably a 4th or 5th rounder C Penn State 6'1/304 5.19/40 225 lbs/33 x 31VJ 4.4/SS
Alex Mack He had a great season and Senior Bowl but hurt his ankle and will have to impress at personal workout to climb back into the 1st round. C/OG California 6'37/311
Jason Smith He is a top 10 left tackle. Unless the Steelers are looking to trade away their draft, there is no way he will end up in black and gold. OT Baylor 6'5/309 5.22/40 225 lbs/33 x
Tyronne Green He is short but very athletic and one of the best pulling guards in the draft. He may have the potential to move to center. Probably a 4th rounder OG Auburn 6'16/309 5.39/40 225 lbs/22 x
Herman Johnson Some teams have taken him off their draft boards. He is a giant but has a tendancy to gain wt. and didn't show much strength at the combine, and was rather slow. OG LSU 6'7/364 5.53/40 225 lbs/22 x
Ron Brace He is the biggest Nose Tackle in the draft. A real space eater. Strong but not very fast. Probably a second rounder DT Boston College 6'3/334 5.47/40 225 lbs/32 x
Terrance Taylor One of the best players on a poor Michigan team. Rather short but very strong. A true NT on a 3-4 defense. DT Michigan 6'0/306 5.24/40 225 lbs/37 x
Fili Moala He was rated at the top of the draft at the beginning of the season but has dropped into last 1st, to mid 2nd. DT/DE USC 6'4/305 5.09/40 225 lbs/25 x
Coye Francies One of the top 5 rated CBs going into the combine but he will have to run a much faster pro day to play CB in the NFL. CB/S San Jose State 6'03/185 4.59/40 225 lbs/24 x
Darius Butler A corner who may have elevated his status into a late first rounder with a very good off season. CB Connecticut 5'10/183 4.53/40 43.0 VJ 11'2"LJ
William Moore He was the top rated safety after the regular season but his draft status has dropped into the 2nd or 3rd round. FS Missouri 6'01/221 4.56/40
"Ziggy" Evander Hood After a great season and an outstanding combine, he may have put himself into the first round. He could be our next great DE Missouri 6'27 300 4.91/40 225 lbs/34 x
Don Carey A possible late round pick or FA. CB Norfolk St. 5'11/192 4.54/40
Vontae Davis He will go from the mid to late first round on skill and potential. He was highly regarded but benched for awhile as a senior. CB Illinois 5'11 203 4.49/40 225 lbs/25 x 4.07SS
Cody Brown A college DE that projects to a 3-4 LB. LB Connecticut 6'2 244 4.84/40 225 lbs/26 x
QB Drew Willy

Fantastic
Coye Francies is on their radar. I’d draft him

Please, God, No...
Not Alex Boone. If his off-the-field issues aren’t enough, surely watching him get abused during the Fiesta Bowl will sway the Steelers away from drafting him… won’t it?
No worries
Boone has the tools but not the brains to use them. A talented kid with character issues and a drinking problem. Sound like a Cincy draft pick to me.

ron brace
Defensive backs, Offensive line, defensive line. While it can be said that these are all the obvious guys to meet with, I’m happy that they are meeting with the obvious guys and clearly looking at guys within their capacity to draft.
What do you got on Ron Brace HighSchoolSteeler? Since I saw his name floating around a few days ago and this list appear elsewhere yesterday I did some research on him.
I like that his “measurables” drop him down in the draft. He isn’t fast. He doesn’t have many sacks. He doesn’t have many tackles. Who cares? All these measurables do is drop his stock. We don’t ask our NT to tackle much or sack much. He’s big, he’s strong, he eats up space. Scouting reports suggest he can collapse and push pockets and can play 2-gap. On the flipside, supposedly his hands need work he has an inconsistent motor. His hands can improve, but hopefully the steelers were able to get something from their 15 minute meeting that tells them about his drive. An inconsistent motor is okay for a 30 year old NT, but we need more from a young’n.
If the steelers don’t have a solid NT lined up for next year, drafting a 2nd rounder this year with upside is a good idea. I’ve never seen Brace play a single down and am not a talent evaluator, but I’d be very happy if the steelers drafted our future NT this year in the 2nd or 3rd round. Chris Hoke plays a pretty mean NT and was undrafted – the steelers know what they are doing in this department.
The only video of him I can find is a quick highlight section: http://bit.ly/ZVwmq
4 plays does not make a player, but it’s a good watch.

I like everything I read there. His negatives don’t affect a NT in the steelers mold, except…
Struggled with a recurring back injury in 2008. … Concern over back injury only heightened considering his heavy build and potential to allow his weight to get out of control.
Not good.

DTs
Speaking of DTs, one guy that caught my eye in the combine was Myron Pryor (I believe that’s his name) from U of Kentucky. Does anyone have any info on him? HSS, do you think you could look him up when you do DL-men? Or you may have already. There for a while I couldn’t keep up with all of the FanPost.

He caught my eye too...
I think he was the guy who grunted and was really intense when he ran his 40….
He is probably not going till at least round 4 it seems to me, he isn’t on anyones radar that i can tell…

Yeah
That’s when he caught my eye. He ran one of the top 40s for a DT, and his size looked decent. They said many of the players in the SEC talked highly of him, and the fact that I never heard of him made me think he might be available in the late rounds.

I don’t know anything about him, but I do know that he stars in one of the funniest football clips you will ever see in your life.

On Pryor
As a resident Kentuckian I thought i might say a couple of things about Myron Pryor, having actually seen him in a few games this season.
He was one of the standouts on UK’s defense, which was pretty good even by SEC standards. While he can push the pocket with an initial burst of quickness – and he does have a good initial burst – as well as hold his own against the run due to his size (6’ 310) – it’s hard to get up under him and push him off the point of attack. Of course, his lack of height also has its downside – it isn’t often that he bats a ball down and sometimes he loses track of a play when set up against taller linemen. However, he has good instincts and actually caught a batted pass in a game against Louisville and ran it back for a score. He sucked on the oxygen tank as hard as Deebo afterwards as well.
He’s certainly a second day selection and probably can be had in the late rounds – maybe 5, but probably 6 or 7. I’m not sure how he’ll work out in the NFL, especially in a 3-4. I think he’s probably got the athleticism to play an end in a 3-4, but i’m not sure how he’d hold up to NFL guards and tackles. Although he did hold his own against opponents in the SEC.
Anyway, that’s what I know.

thanks...good to actually hear about him...
all the draft websites have the same info on him, and it isn’t very much at all.

Pryor, Myron
He is pretty quick for someone so big. He measured 6’02 319 but ran the 40 in 5.01 at the combine. He didn’t participate in other drills such as lifting. We will have to see what he does at his Pro day.
