Trade UP ?

Hey guys, We are speculating lots of guys to pick next April such as Alex Mack, Britton, Beattie, Sean Smith, Alphonso Smith, Max Unger, Duke Robinson and some others!

,
But What about trading up to get a top-notch OT! I think if Andre Smith or Michael Oher pass through 17th we should make a move and get the 18th or 19th pick!

We could get our franchise OT, and move Colon inside! I really like Mack, but I think we can get some really good centers such as Luiggs, Wood in the 3rd or 4th round!

And a Center in the 1st round isnt a good value(positional value)

Other thing I was thinking, maybe getting a CB instead of a OL (if we dont get those great LTs) would be better for our team, we wouldnt reach and with the way the NFL is playing having 3 very good CBs is a MUST! Also, with the way some just OK CBs are making ALL-PRO CB money , the draft is the way! I see a CB in the 1st or 2nd round!

Any thoughts?

I'd trade up for:

Rey Maualuga
Mike Oher
Tyson Jackson
Brian Orakpo? Doubt he falls that far, plus we wont need him if Harrison re signs

Forget Orakpo

We create our own OLBs, we haven’t had a first rounder in that position since…… We haven’t in forever, Timmons was moved inside…. Why would we ever want to waste a pick on someone when we can coach a 2nd rounder-UFA to become a pro-bowler/DPOY?

Maualuga also is not in such a position that we need to reach for him. between Timmons, Foote, and Potsie we are fine at MLB, I don’t care how much of a can’t miss talent he may be.

Tyson Jackson or Mike Oher I could definitely see us going out and grabbing, and would have no problem giving up a third and sixth rounder as well as our first.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Trading up in the first is expensive, so if we’re going to to do it, it’s going to be at a position of need. You don’t trade up for a LB if you already have 2 or 4 sweet LB’s and don’t need a starter right away. We traded up for Troy because our starting safeties were Mike Logan and Brent Alexander. We traded up for Holmes because Cedric Wilson was starting and we had no real depth beyond him.

If they love Jackson, he would make sense, but really, I can’t see them trading up for someone who’s not on the OL, unless it’s just to the #25 range.

What about Andre Smith? Do you think he will be a bust because of his work ethic!

I think in the 20s he will be a steal!

by SteelerBrazil on Mar 22, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree that he would be a steal

but the red flags go up when I see a guy with a lack of work ethic. Now this could be turned around of course by our stellar coaching staff, but if the Steelers were given the option between Smith and say a guy like Mack, I’d think they’d pick Mack. Though Smith has him beat in athletic talent, Mack is the type of guy you love to have on your team. Bottom line though, if the Steelers look past the screw ups on Smith, they could get a great bargain out of him for a lower price.

I don't see

Smith as a bad guy, I just see him as a moron. I don’t think he’s the type of cancer TO is, but a guy who is definitely in need of a maturation process.

yea look back at how he transformed

Big snack. He took him from the mother of all Whoppers to Jr. Whopper within several weeks. Not sayin’ that Big Snack is a bad worker, but Tomlin knows how to put in the right place.

Sounds unlikely that he drops

During the combine, everyone was killing him, but since, most pundits have talked like they still expect Andre Smith to be a top 10 pick.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Mar 23, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I also think that Andre Smith could not make a top 10 position

This guy needs lots of bodywork, he has great talent but lacks totally of work ethics, I hope we go to the OL with Britton (he is one year younger) or Oher or even Mack, but if we can´t get that, we must trade down to have 5 or 6 quality picks. We even could go the DL/CB issues. We could go
OL/CB
CB/OL
(WR/PR)/DL
DL
FB
And go net fishing for 5 to 9 FA´s.

Andre Smith

Yeah, him with his shirt off was not a pretty site.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Mar 24, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya,

But I think he could be great in black and gold! He would ruin a already ruined team such as Lions, Bengals, but blue-collar bone team like Steelers would fix this HUGE issue! Is a Bet, big risk big gain!! I would go for it! But the guy I really love is Oher, I think he has been very underrated, for no reason! Some mocks would put him higher than Jake Long last year!

by SteelerBrazil on Mar 22, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Andre Smith needs to go to a place that isn’t a distraction. A team like NYC, or Oakland, even NO or ATL would get him in the right mind set. [sarcasm]

here's the draft value chart

http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

To get up to #19 would roughly cost our #1 and our #2, not too terrible. However we might be better served trying to use our 3rd pick to move up in the second round and we’d still have a comp pick in the 3rd round. All depends on who we’re targeting which at this point is just speculation.

Thanks for pointing out that chart

Gives a good idea of what’s possible.

No we can’t trade up. u can’t just say I want a higher pick. You lose your 1st rounder and a 2nd-3rd rounder depending on how your going up. Even if we did Orakpo, Maclin, wouldn’t be there. Smith, maybe

J Mike

trade something

having the 32nd pick is really good but as far as drafting it put you in a tricky situation, yea its a first round pick but you could end up getting a second round guy. If they don’t see someone falling trade up or trade down, I’d rather save cap space and have just two second round draft picks for less money for a first and a second even though the first year guy is really worth a second rounder. Or if you see someone falling in the OL or DL range go out and get em. People talk about that window of opportunity and we have ours in these next 7 years. I’d say if we play it right we can win 2 or 3 more super bowls in the next decade. This year we really have a chance because of the schedule, barring this team playing down to it’s competition or major injures, this team will be in the playoffs again next year and starting in the second round. I’m so excited about the draft.

Matt Stafford

Use him in your wildcat formation. Ben runs, Matt throws.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Trading up...

will not happen with the Steelers, it’s quite evident that they are willing to work with the OL they have and probably draft a guy like A.Q Shipley in the third or fourth round, he has upside and is strong and a smart good character guy. It is cheaper for them and then they can draft skill position guys and good D guys with the higher draft choices. The worst thing that happened is they won with the OL from last year, they think they can coach and develop the unit to be better this year. I bet they only draft 1 OL lineman.

by ColinP on Mar 23, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed

hopefully the one lineman they get is real good. But hey if T.hills develops they may only really need one good lineman, who knows. I hope they get 2 because of depth issues but you’re probably right..

by tannofsteel84 on Mar 23, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Worst thing is they won the super bowl?????????????

I get your point, but think about that statement for a bit. Remember the good old days when we had pro bowl o-lineman and lost the AFC championship game at home in 94, 97, 01, and 04 and barely beat the Colts in 95 before outrushing the Cowboys in a sb loss. Awesome wasnt it. NO!!!!! Thank god we finally have a Qb and some wide receivers worth significant cap space. Yes , you build up the middle and defense wins titles, but not with Neil O’Donnell, Kordell, Dwight Stone, and Ernie Mills. ( Dont get me wrong, I loved Ernie but he was a 2 or 3 wr on a good passing team)

by Micculus on Mar 23, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hard to think that’s the worst thing to happen. :)

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Mar 23, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right on Micculus

I’ve made these points before. People always seem to talk of rushing the football, and like you said those times we had a dominant run game, we lost when it counted the most.

If anything, it goes to show by far the most important position on the field is QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can have a truly dominant run game, a #1 ranked run game, a dominant smash mouth line….but eventually the QB is going to have to make plays, big time throws, in big time situations to win games…not just any games but playoffs and SB’s.

Yes, we need some good, young Olineman (to go with the ones we have already) from this draft to protect Ben.

And, thank God for Big Ben!!!!

by SteelerMike on Mar 23, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The worst thing...

It was stupid point saying the worst thing was winning the SB, but it validates the fact that the line can play well together and be developed by the coaches. That’s the organizational view. We as fans want to draft the best tackles and centres (I am Canadian, hence the spelling).
