Steelers to Open up 2009 Season with Tennessee
Oh boy, what a great opening game this is gonna be!! Revenge will be sweet.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/breaking/s_617399.html
The Steelers will kick off the NFL season on Thursday, Sept. 10 against the Tennessee Titans at Heinz Field, team officials confirmed today.
The game will be televised in prime time by NBC.
The Titans had the best record in the AFC last season, and the Steelers finished with the second-best mark en route to winning Super Bowl XLIII.

Nice
Should be a good game as long as Kemo actually blocks Jason Jones this time.

Ratbirds running...
It seems the Ravens asked the NFL not to play in this game (opening weekend), because they feared getting their butts kicked on opening night in prime time. What a bunch of cowards…next they’ll ask to play Detroit 10 out of 16 weeks…they still wouldn’t win the division!! Ha Ha
by ColinP on Mar 23, 2009 2:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Its not cowardly, it is unfair what they did the past 4 years.
Home field is everything in this league and is more important in the NFL then it is in any other sport. And to have it on primetime is even more crazier. The fans are rockin, everyone is watching, you gotta see it from our side. 3 of the last 4 season, we have had to play a monday night game in Pittsburgh. I’ll admit it, if we would have won maybe 1 or 2 of those games, we most likely dont make this request.
But you have to admit it is not fair to have us play at your place 3 straight times on primetime just because of your historical background, you guys get the nudge to host the game. The NFL has always had something out against the Ravens. Teams that havent been in the NFL for that long are not supposed to be successful. Teams are not supposed to win with defense and a crappy offense. But we do, most of the time. So they make sure to place us in the worst possible situation so that the greatest franchise of all time does not get ousted by some 13 year old loud mouths, right?
Come on man, give us a break. We still will go to Pitt regardless, so what does the time matter. It is no different if you beat us at 1pm then at 8:15pm.
Plus, dont you want a little revenge for the Titans stomping on the towel last year? You already gave it to us, hard, 3 times last year, find a new team to pick on!
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

just like
it was when we played ya’ll for the division? football is football, don’t tell me its unfair, if you are the better team you’ll win no matter where you play. I do apreciate your response :) you are a quality fan.

I totally understand your comment
But in the league, the environment that you are playing in is very important. Everyone wants to play every game at home, it just feels right. I really do not want to say it like this, but we want to avoid coming to Pittsburgh as much as possible, especially when its the atmosphere of a night game with the whole country tuned it.
We definitely had our shot to beat you guys both times we were in Pitt. And I think when we are given the opportunity again, we will prevail. You guys have not played a primetime game in B-More since 2003. We have played 3 times on national tv in the last 4 years at your stadium. How long should it have to go on for. You got us, congratulations. New year, new team now. Lets go!

This is gonna be an exciting season. The trash talk that is going to be coming out of my fingers and the infamous “we beat you 3 times” that will be repeated over and over again from all of you guy’s precious little fingers is going to be fun.

Yeah
I already said as much on the “spineless cowards” thread. I would probably be complaining if it were the other way around. But, it just doesn’t look good for the team to make that request.
by WolfpackSteelersFan on Mar 23, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you serious?
I get the fans feeling the pressure of coming into the Burgh for those games and somehow it’s unfair that it’s on primetime, but I really think for your team to officially complain about playing on TV on our field is waaaaahhhh territory.
This is a professional league right? This isn’t Friday Night Lights for Pete’s sake.
You play the game where you play it, when you play it, and against whoever you play it. A team’s job is to play and win….period.
We play your field, you play ours, and because our two teams hate each other and are usually the better teams in the Division – it’s golden football and great ratings. If Kornheiser complains about it (and he does every time) it’s great football.
I don’t think the Steelers complained about having to go play at New England for the second straight year…we just went there and won.
I wonder how your players actually feel about this…I would be embarassed if I were them. Primetime is supposed to be a good thing for all the players right? Maybe your Joe “Bert” Flacco doesn’t like the lights? I dunno, but this is a wierd one in my book.

"The NFL has always had something out against the Ravens."
That’s downright absurd. The NFL is the ultimate parity league. Any fan from any town who really believes the NFL has something out for them is suffering from delusions of persecution. That said, I can’t say I disagree with your premise. If we had gone to New England thre of the last four years on a Monday Night and lost all three I would be pretty peeved if they scheduled us for another Monday Night game there again.

As much as I hate the Steelers being a Raven fan.
I just do not think it was smart to stomp on the terrible towel after they beat you in the regular season. I mean come on, it was the regular season, Tennessee does not have a quarter of the resume that Pittsburgh has, and they stomp on the towel? You guys should pull an Albert Haynesworth and punch stomp on Bullock’s face.
I still wonder today guys, did you really want us in the AFC Championship game cause you would be at home and nothing is better then smashing on us? Or did you want another shot at Tennesee to show them what AFC North football represents, smash mouth?
Is this going to be Thursday night football?

all of this talk of the ratbirds is irrelevant to this thread
They pussed out, so they lose a primetime spot.
On to important matters…
When I heard it was the Titans (my guess for first opponent), for the first time since 2/1/09, I got that determined, squinty look in my eye. The look forward of a having a quality opponent scheduled to face the Steelers. We need to win this to start off right in 2009. You never know what might be at stake later in the season.

I also didn’t want us going into the superbowl with a bunch of guys injured. Which if you look at it we were pretty lucky, Only Hines got hurt.

Remember that one. Joey Harrytits threw like 3 TDs and played a lights out game. It was offensive. The bus had 3 TD’s I think. Almost 4. It was his last home game.
I remember, because I was there! But yeah Detroit had us actually showing up to play them. Very odd.

Schedule
A word of caution regarding our schedule. It’s the NFL, there is no easy schedule. Granted, it may appear easier in March but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
Also, will a so-called “weaker” schedule in 2009 ultimately be detrimental? I contend that the reason we won the SB was partly BECAUSE (not in spite of) of our “tough” schedule!! We were battle tested, against the toughest teams, and it paid off huge dividends.
So, we should all feel good about our team, but I wouldn’t be counting any chickens….
Coach Tomlin is right on as usual, we can’t defend a past title…it’s a whole new season, new team, everyone starts over…

On this
I agree with you. I think normally a fluff schedule is a bad thing. But realize this, we did just win the thing. We know how to do it. I think at this point they’ve more than proven to themselves they can beat anybody. And Ben is a winner. He gets stuff done.
Personally, I think Mike T got these guys on the right track and they wont let anybody creep up on them.
