Dammit! No extra 3rd R. pick
Just read on Post Gazette that we will not get that 3rd round compensatory pick, we'll get it in the 5th round instead. Pick #169. That's in the middle of the 5th. I'm sure you all agree that's really disappointing.
So now we have to get serious on our later picks. So then, does this mean we draft a tight end in the 3rd or 4th round? On the bright side, Gay was a 5th rounder, right? Here's hoping we use that pick on a good 'un!

Very disappointing
I’ll also be disappointed if we don’t try to package some of these late picks to trade up in rounds 2-4 (round 1 will be too costly).
We now have 9 picks (with 2 in the 5th, 2 in the 7th), no way 9 rookies make this team. I think 6 picks would be optimum.
Fanaca is only worth a 5th?
I don’t believe it. Not only did he sign a huge contract, but also represented the AFC in the Pro Bowl. The Pats get a 3rd? The NFL needs to release this so called formula for the fans to evaluate.
Wow That's a big downer
Goodell’s (not sure if that’s spelled right) time in office has run it’s course…Anyone in for a “field trip” to the commissioner’s office?

In all seriousness
This is bull. Faneca, an 8 time pro bowler (7 times with us) leaves, our running game goes to hell, Ben ends up on his back just as much, and we get stuck with a friggin’ 5th round comp pick? Complete crap. I’m convinced that the NFL just doesn’t like us.

I'm curious...
Pats got a pick for stallworth… Now that its increasingly likely stallworth will spend the next few years in jail, or more, do the browns get a compensatory pick next year?
the thing is, faneca did allow 10 sacks against him last year
but he was stout at run blocking, i dont know if he deserved the pro bowl selection

draft numbers, taken from Steelers Fury
we return 44 of our 53 man roster. Plus add Mendy & Robo who were on IR, practice squad players Mundy, Harrison, Legursky, and possible re-signers Batch, Fox.
That brings the grand total to 51 (if both Batch, Fox re-sign) not including bubble players like Capizzi (who could finally prove he belongs this year), Paxon, Parquet.
It’s a simple numbers game. This draft should be quality over quanity. I hope we trade some of those lower picks to move up in rounds 2-4 or trade them for higher picks next year.
This is just wrong
This is honestly a travesty. A rip off of epic proportions.
You’re telling me Donte Stallworth, a injury prone drunk ass pedestrian murderer gets New England a 3 spot?
I am going to use some verbal freedom here and say Fuck the Patriots and their consistent heaping quantities of draft picks. Fuck them getting multiple high round picks every year nomatter what. Fuck them getting a great first rounder even after they cheat.
I hate them and they stank like the foulest Detroit football dookie. I wish nothing less than full obliteration by the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
Stallworth got them a 6th rounder
Assante Samuel got them a third rounder, I think Samuel is worth it too.
But a fourth rounder for Faneca!!!! That is garbage. I think Mewelde Moore’s playing time lowered that one.

No, a 5th rounder for Faneca
We got screwed!

Also look at all the third rounders
Except for Asante Samuel none of the 3rd round comp picks were for anybody remotely good.
In fact, the only two I really feel right about are the two 4th rounders in a row for Whales Vagina. I can dig that. But honestly all the third rounders are garbage. The Bengals especially. They had nobody good to lose. Its bull.
Pardon my rant but this is some jive turkey

I couldn’t agree more, I wanna know what in the world Bellicheat got on Goodell, he must have video taped him doing something. This really stinks but it only makes sense for us to put some packaged deal to move up or get another pick in the second or third roundround. I say trade 5, 6, 7 for a third round pick.
nah
I’d rather see them get a better 2nd rounder. I’m convinced we will get a good 1st round lineman at 32.
But lets take our two 5’s, and trade up our 2nd pick to get closer to the middle and grab another quality player.
sounds good to me
and then use some other picks to trade up in the third, i really want quality over quantity this year

no can do
Can’t trade comp picks so no matter what we will be selecting 169 overall. Our other 5th (pick 168) can be moved to try to move up, but here is where I see a problem. Moving up in the first is way too much and in the second will cost us our 3rd. When it was lookinglike a 3rd round comp would come, moving up in the 2nd (common in the Colbert Era) would have been very likely, now, I would prefer we move down to pick up an extra 2nd adn 3rd or 2nd and 4th for our 1st. I think we could greatly benefit from that unless one of hte big OT’s is available. Trading for another second (midround maybe or for both the patriots seconds) we cuold pick up Darius Butler (CB/KR UCONN) Eric Wood (C/Louisville) and maybe a flyer on a guy like Illinois tackle Xavier Fulton. I am really high on that guy. Blocked for Mendy and play LT for Illinois, but the fastest 10yd dash (the real important measurement for OL In my opinion) of any tackle/guard. Move this guy to guard and I think we actually replace Faceca.
O-Line
we really need help in the o/line area, someone who can start filling in right away, not starting but at least taking some reps and starting next season. We also need c/b’s and d/b’s who can do the same.I’m not sold on Sweed as a starting wr in the near future, unless this was just a rookie season thing and he gets his hands back he was a great college wr,hopefully some extra work now will pay off.I can say enough about Mewelde Moore he saved our butt;s so many times when we lost most of our rb’s.
Unreal. He signed a huge deal and made the freaking Pro Bowl and we get a 5th rounder? Since when do they actually look at how well they played instead of whether they made the Pro Bowl? Sheesh. Anyone who says the league always takes our side should take a close look at this one.

Read this line
Basically on the NFL.com page that semi explains how they judge what pick they give out, they said this at the end of the paragraph:
“Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula”
So what formula did they f’ing use for Faneca. Maybe he was TOO good, and we shoulda got like a 2nd rounder. But they dont give out 2nd rounders, so they had to just give us something else!
What are the metrics?
Does the NFL look at the player lost or the player lost minus the player gained? Do they look at performance before the player’s departure only, or do they look at performance subsequent to that departure. Faneca was more valuable to his team than the Pat’s Randall Gay was to his, but they both are 5th round comps—which makes no sense. However, if Randall Gay was not “offset” by a free agent brought in, while Faneca was “offset” by Mewelde Moore, who put up some good numbers for the Steelers and was available for the full season, then perhaps there is a logic here. Also, as someone pointed out earlier, Faneca gave up a bunch of sacks in NY, which could have hurt the comp picture. Obviously, I don’t like the results and would like more transparency on the calculation, but this may not be a clear mistake or jobbing of the Steelers as we fans think it is. One thing we know, given how quiet the Steelers are acting during this offseason, there can be no doubt that the team will likely obtain multiple 4th or 5th round picks for the loss of McFadden and Washington (Anthony Smith or Marvell Smith don’t count because they were released, right?) assuming those two play at least as well in ’09 as in ’08.
marvel smith would count
Marvel was a FA this year and if he signs anywhere would contribute to the Steelers getting a compensatory pick next year. Anthony Smith was not released, just a restricted free agent who was not offered a contract. Since he was never an unrestricted free agent his signing by the Packers might not qualify. I would also expect Byron Leftwich to get an offer somewhere. I would think we’ll get 3-4 compensatory picks next year, depending on how many (if any) FAs we sign.

Formula
I don’t know the formula for calculating comp picks but would it be safe to say Moore coming this way from the Vikes had some impact on that? Or would Vikes get a pick separately? Formula please…we have wonderlic tests on here someone get the formula!!
What ever the formula
The end of it is
steelers pick > dev_null

What about Waltzing Mewelde
Is the fact that perhaps since Waltzing Mewelde Love Boat Moore outperformed his expectations this has boofed our pickage?
And perhaps since LaMarr Woodley replaced Clark Haggans so well, they just decided not to really count Clark that much.
I also think that winning the superbowl is a large part of that equation
They probably have an equation solely for the superbowl winners that devalue every player lost.
Yes, I think we got jobbed.
I’m okay with this though. What it all boils down to is, what did our free agents that we lost help their respective teams do? Hmmm?
Without the free agents we acquired we wouldn’t have won the superbowl. We can talk all we want about salaries, pro-bowls, playing time, etc., but that is the bottom line. We got to and won the superbowl because of the free agents we picked up.
All that being said, I think we can safely assume that the nfl has altered its formula slightly this year.
pick = douchebag formula
if(team == steelers && team == sbWinners)
pick -= 2
I blame the /dev/null comment above.

A fifth-round compensation is not really unfair
Regardless of what formula was used, this is how free agency worked out last year: We lost a Pro Bowl guard who played every snap; a guy who would have been a backup linebacker; and a clipboard holding QB who never saw the field. We gained a valuable RB who started a few games and contributed significant yards, and a valuable special teams player and backup linebacker. The net difference between free agents lost and signed does not add up to a third-rounder. We had this discussion about a month ago on another thread and I thought we would get a fourth-rounder so this doesn’t totally surprise me. There is a compensatory pick guru who predicted a third-rounder and is apparently flummoxed about the situation, but a fifth-rounder is not really unfair, just not the bonanza we thought it would be. Look at it this way: If we had only lost Faneca, and not signed any free agents, we would have got a third-rounder; if we had just lost Haggans and not signed any free agents, we would have got a seventh-rounder. But since we signed Moore, I think the NFL split the difference, keeping in mind that the other FA we signed (Fox) contributed more than Haggans and that St. Pierre did not play a down.
