2009 Draft Selections

There are 4 areas the Pittsburgh Steelers must fill in the 2009 draft: Offensive Line, Defensive Line, Secondary, and Wide Reciever.

Each round I selected an Offensive Lineman, a Defensive Lineman,  and a Cornerback/Safety, which I think would be good value if the Steelers drafted at that spot. I also selected wide receivers in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds.

Star-divide

1st-

OT- Eben Briton- If he falls to 32, he would be a steal.

DT- Evander Hood- Has good measurables and a good motor. I'm sold.

CB- Sean Smith- Could be either a safety or corner. Physical enough to guard larger wideouts.

2nd-

OG- Duke Robinson- The best guard in the 2009 class.

DT- Jarron Gilbert- I think he may not be tough enough, but he would be good value in the 2nd round.

S - William Moore- Was injured last year, or he probably would have been a first rounder.

3rd-

C- Jonathan Luigs- As good as Mack and Unger, but may drop to the 3rd round.

DE- Paul Kruger- His stock is dropping because his 40 time was bad, but he could still be a solid player.

CB- Mike Mickens- Like Moore, injuries hurt Mickens stock, but when he was healthy he was elite.

4th-

OG- Kraig Urbik- Solid Wisconsin lineman, should be reliable, but not spectactular.

DE- Mitch King- Has a good motor and work ethic. Reminds me on Brett Keisel.

CB- Kevin Barnes- He got the highest score on the Wonderlic. I like that!

5th-

OT- Jason Watkins- Underrated lineman from the national champion.

DE- Orion Martin- 3-4 DE from a good Virginia Tech defense.

CB- Donald Washington- Played behind Malcolm Jenkins and held his own.

WR- Johnny Knox- If he falls this far, the Steelers would be wise to take him. He has elite speed.

6th-

OT- Alex Boone- If he plays to his potential, this is a huge steal. He was once considered a 1st round pick.

DT- Nader Abdallah- Didnt get much playing time at OSU, he has a lot of athleticism.

CB- Brandon Underwood- Another guy with the talent to play either safety or corner.

WR- Austin Collie - Good punt returner, maybe the best BYU reciever in history.

7th-

OG- Paul Fanaika- For run blocking situations.

DT- Ra'shon Harris- Good speed, size, could be developed.

CB- Bradley Fletcher- Has good potential, but must develop.

WR- Brian Hartline- Actually, I dont think he is that much worse than Brian Robiske. Good blocker! Similar to Joe Jurevicus. A steal here.

we have 9 draft picks

we only need about 5 or 6, we really should trade some, plus they always draft a linebacker, I’d expect that trend to continue

I really hope that Robinson

Drops to us in the second round, but as far as I’ve seen, he’s good enough to be a first round selection for us. My dream scenario would be: Mack in the first and Robinson in the second. All this team is missing is a strong Offensive line. You install that and you get the best team in the NFL without a doubt.

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

really?

I read the Steelers gave him a 3rd round grade during the season (fat, not that athletic). I wouldn’t take him with #64. I like one of the C / G options if they slip that far, or wait on them till the value is back in the 4th.

I wouldn't mind Robinson in the 2nd,

but I would hate to have a big guy who can’t, due to poor technique or awareness, redirect his fat mass to block a speeding linebacker.

I too want to solidify that line as soon as possible, but I think the only way we go Oline with our first pick is if we trade down and get Wood.

Oline

Is’nt the only need we have. Our whole defensive line is over 30, and Brett Keisel will be a free agent next year. And the Steelers don’t have a track record of signing 30+ year old veterans. and lets face it Hines Ward is’nt getting any younger.

Very True

But Oline is the most important. I say wait till next year to address the Defensive Line. Guys like Terrance Cody, That guy from Nebraska Suh. I could see us gettin Ziggy Hood in the 2nd round this year though.

You also have to remember that the Steelers have done well using low round picks on the DL. The only high draft pick on out line is Hampton who also needs an eventual replacement.

I am starting to get with those that argue that a NT is needed. Every team needs O-line picks but the NT demand in the past has been light and is growing. Not sure how many college teams play 3-4 but NFL teams are starting to switch so the plug in the middle is going to be hard to find in the coming years. Was it the D- lines of the teams we were playing that made our O-line look so bad? That seems to be the thoughts of the FO with the re-signings we had. I won’t be surprised if we go CB-NT in the first few picks, not that I want that, but I wont be surprised.

The Steelers are bringing in

The Steelers are bringing in Eric Wood C/G 6’4/310 Louisville 5.19/40 30 REPS/225 30.5VJ and Jarron Gilbert DE/OT 6-5 287 San Jose State 4.87/40 28 REPS/225 for visits. Both of these players stocks are rising. I could see the Steelers taking Eric Wood in the 1st and trading up in the second to take NT Ron Brace, Fili Moala DL 6042 303 USC 5.16/40, or Jarron Gilbert. Pro Football Weekly states that Jarron Gilbert’s possible position change could be Offensive Tackle.

I agree Eric Wood would be an excellent choice too.
