One Sweed Pair of Hands
So we all remember that drop, right? How could anyone forget. He's open (and not that one step on a guy kind of open either) on about the three yard line, the throw is maybe a little bit behind him, he slows up, reaches out, and the ball bounces off his hands, and hits the ground. How many of us were screaming obscenities at our tv's on that one.
All we talked about when it came to Limas was the drops. Would he be reliable enough to be our 3rd guy, can we trust his hands.
Well at least he's man enough to step up and say that what he did last year was not indicative of what he is as a player. And he's not just letting his mouth do the talking, he's decided to bust his you know what, and put in the work it takes to reach the lofty expectations put upon him by a fan base boasting two current Super Bowl MVP's at his position, not to mention a couple of past greats enshrined in Canton, OH. Here's alink to the article on ESPN.com:
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcnorth/0-2-280/Sweed-ready-to-prove-himself.html
Now none of this work means he will be catching everything thrown his way this year, but unlike other players at his position around the league, he's willing to do all he can to put himself in a position to succeed.

Here’s to hoping this post doesn’t conflict with a six pack today, even though I think it will.

No six pack today....thanks for keeping on top of the news...
I spent the majority of my morning compiling the mock draft list instead.

Drink the "crooked I" son!
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Limas Sweed will turn out to be a completely wicked wideout
Washington pissed us all off too with his inconsistent play and drops early on. If Sweed just keeps listening to Ward, he’ll be fine. (and hopefully not FINED) hahaha. I see Sweed taking full advantage of all the attention paid to our pair of superbowl MVP WR’s and getting open lots this year. He’ll probably drop a few balls, but I bet he has a nasty YPC avg and does some damage. How the hell can you not like a guy named Limas Sweed! My kids think his name is cool!

He’s big enough to beat the jam and make teams pay for using the man-press coverage that killed our offense all last year. That’s enough to make me want to give him as many chances as it takes.

i keep tellin people
just wait till they sweed in 09, its gonna be rediculous. Catchin the ball is easy, getting open isnt…. can you imagine him in the redzone? just throw it up….. our offense should be explosive…. but sadly people won’t listen, mock my words, we are gonna be praising sweed like we do woodley this time in 2010

I don't know about all that
I’m as hopeful as the next guy but he has only proven one thing: he’s determined.
You can see it when comes back from the drop and throws one hell of a block, in his 1 or 2 tough 3rd down catches, and his work ethic. By all account he’s the hardest worker on the team except for maybe Aaron Smith or Chris Hoke.
But he hasn’t proven much beyond that in terms of skills on the field… and there are plenty of unemployed determined football players.

He's got the skills on the field.....
Just go to youtube and look at his highlights from college. He just has to calm down and get used to the offense and by next year, nobody will be remembering “the drop”.

Limas
I think with him it’s a classic case of trying too hard. It’s mostly a mental thing. When WR’s “try” too hard, “fight it”, they get frustrated, and this prevents their natural ability from coming through. This sets up a viscous cycle.
There have been many athletes of all types with loads of ability and talent who never reach their potential because of their headspace…self doubt, frustration, fear. A golfer with all the physical skills and shots but who has the “yips” is a classic example.
I know this was only Sweeds first year. I think he has tons of potential and I hope he comes though big. But make no mistake this is not just about his drop v. Ravens. This was a year long problem of him dropping balls in practice and in the few opportunities he had in games. This is what prompted an exasperated coach Tomlin to say, “I just would he would catch the ball!!”.
He will have ample opportunities to shine. Will he be able to put this first year behind him and let his natural ability come through or will he continue to “try” too hard.
We will see.

Good point, NY
Playing next to two Superbowl MVPs would put a fire under anybody’s arse.

It`s a shame
to me that Sweed has this label that he now has to shake of having bad hands because of two drops in his rookie year with limited playing time. People forget he did`t play his senior year. He just needs to get into the flow. Watching his highlights in college I think it`s safe to say he has a nice pair of hands. There is no doubt in my mind he will be twice the receiver Nate Washington could ever be.

On Sweed
For one I am with syrsteelerfan that I am hopeful he can step up and become a competent receiver. Truer words have never been written than “there are plenty of unemployed determined football players.” He has proven nothing yet.
Also with SteelerMike that this was not about 1 dropped pass. Many seem to forget he dropped one the week before which could have put the Bolts away much sooner. He dropped passes in preseason and during the regular season. Even Tomlin was perplexed by him at times.
In the end the Steelers faith in him will be shown on draft day. Do we take a WR with our #1? I guess if he is BPA we will regardless of FO faith in Sweed. As difficult as it is for a WR in year 1 I seem to remember Holmes showing signs of brilliance even if he wasn’t consistent. Troy Edwards also showed signs and while ultimately a washout did put up some numbers that Sweed did not. IMO jury is still out on Limas. I don’t care about college highlights on youtube. I care about his performance at the NFL level in games where he is wearing B&G. So far I am very disappointed. Blocking or no blocking.

He'll be ok
I think he is gonna be just fine. Its called a rookie year for a reason.
Dont you think that if we had put him in more often throughout the year he would have shaken his jitters a long time ago, and thus he probably makes that catch in the AFCCG?
We were simply fortunate to avoid injury to our WR’s for most of the year until Hines hurt himself.

SWEED.....
I think Limas Sweed will turn out fine in 09’.. There was PLENTY of times that Nate Washington dropped easy first down passes, and plenty of times I’ve cursed at my TV after a Washington dropped pass hopefully Sweed will be able to hold on to the ball this season and everybody can forget about the dropped AFCCG dropped pass…….
