2010 Compensatory Picks
Assuming the Steelers do not pick up any free agents during this offseason, then how many losses would count against their compensatory picks calculation? Does anyone know? Clearly, Bryant McFadden and Nate Washington will count. However, will Anthony Smith count? What about Marvell Smith? He just signed with the 49ers. If players are cut from the team prior to an offer being made, then I thought that they would not count toward the compensatory picks calculation. Is this correct? If so, then why shouldn't the Steelers have delayed releasing players until other teams had shown interest?

I thought Marvel Smith was just visiting the 9ers. I don’t want a injury-prone, expensive OL, but I didn’t realize he already signed.

A player being cut won’t get a compensory pick. Only those who left via FA.

All will count
Bryant McFadden, Nate Washington, and Marvel Smith were all unrestricted free agents. Anthony Smith could have been a restricted free agent if we made a qualifying offer. Since we did not make a qualifying offer, he was not cut, but became an unrestricted free agent.

Dont forget some more possible sales
Lefty is almost certainly going to get a job. Its a crime that he is unemployed right now. I mean come on Jets/Detroit/SanFran/Seattle/TamponBay/Buffalo dont you think he could help?
I dont think we have much more behind him, but I would think 5 against 0 right now should get us a couple in that draft.

FA eligibility
McFadden and Washington are getting about $5M /yr I think which puts them at the border between 4th and 5th rounders
Marvel Smith’s contract is thought to be about the same paywise but very much incentive driven. So if he makes it though the year, he might be good for a 4th or 5th.
Anthony Smith’s contract is around $750k /yr which is below the cutoff for comp picks.
at the moment 2 picks look like a good lock. 3 are likely depending on how the NFL views Marvel’s contract and how much he plays.

it's kind of nuts
that Nate may get us more than Faneca in terms of comp picks.

Marvell was here for nine years
The reason Faneca only got us a 5th rounder is because there is some rule where that is the max you can get for a guy with over ten years in.
So my question is, since this is Marvell’s 10th season does the same hold true? It is possible for his back to be healed and him perform exceptionally.
"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"
at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Marvel Smith
If Marvel Smith were to play full time for the entire year and then make the Pro Bowl, we could end up with a high comp. pick. I believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Detroit trading us their 1st round draft pick too.
