Steelers Salary Chart Now $5.8 Million Under Cap

First off, there is no way my chart (listed below) is 100 percent accurate.  Only Omar Khan and the FO have all the figures accurate to every detail.  I posted everything to the best of my understanding, but please know that I tinker with this often and will make future tweaks as I learn them.  But I can't be too far off, one way or the other, so it's worth posting every once in a while.

I have us now at $5.8 Million under the cap, now that an extra $4 million was added by the NFL as a market adjustment recently.  The NFL cap is $127 million.  Some items to note.  While the team has decided to go into 2009 with basically the same offensive line, there is virtually no future weight against the cap in 2010.  We need to eat Sean Mahan's remaining $2.4 million and now Kendall Simmons is costing us $4.6 this year with the cut.  The bad new is that we are spending $20 million on the starting offensive line this year alone (counting Simmons and Mahan), a line very few people are thrilled about.  The good news is that only Kemo is a guaranteed expense in 2010 and beyond.  We're paying now (i.e. Simmons) to clear the slate in the near future.

I only counted the top 53 salaries against the cap.  In the offseason, the NFL doesn't make you count all the extras just going to camp.  Since 53 is what we will end up with, my figure of $121,195,527 is as good as I can guess at the moment.  If anyone has more accurate information, please let me know.  For example, I guessed at Kemo getting a base of $3,200 in 2009 with $800K as his prorated bonus.  If you know something different with him (or anyone for that matter), please holler.  The updated spreadsheet follows.

Good Stuff MR.

Did I miss us tagging Carey Davis? I thought he was a gonner.

by Chicago Steeler on Mar 3, 2009 5:55 PM EST reply actions

We tendered Carey Davis

as an excusive restricted free agent. He can’t negotiate elsewhere. Come to think of it his offer was different than McHugh’s so I should cut his salary in half as being a three-year vet. We did the same with Parquet.

deebo and bruce davis...

nice work. interesting to analyze. man they better pay big james! that chart has his cap value as 22nd on the team. talk about a bargaining chip for deebo to take to the table. also, i didn’t see bruce davis’s name anywhere. what’s his status?

by cliff harris is still a punk! on Mar 3, 2009 6:25 PM EST reply actions

just found davis on milkshake's link

he’s counting $554,000 against the cap this year, or roughly 1/3 of what deebo is. and who the hell is brandon williams?

When I think about the fact that

Max Starks is making
1 million more than Troy
2 million more than Casey Hampton
As much as Aaron Smith and James Farrior combined
over 4 times as much as James Harrison
and 10 times as much as Lamar Woodley

It makes me very angry. I honestly think that James Harrison could come in and play left tackle if they needed him too. Especially if they reminded him of how much he makes in comparison to Max Starks before he took the field. He would redefine pancake block.

Football is a business and left tackles are expensive, but to me this is absurd. Max Starks is NOT THAT GOOD.

OK sorry, just had to get it out of my system. I am done. Carry on folks.

I AGREE

That is just so stupid. He isn’t that good and doesn’t deserve that much money. I guess they just thought they should keep their “best” lineman. Anyways, thanks for pointing that out, it puts it into much more perspective.

by paulamalu on Mar 3, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

we all need to stop

thinking about the absolute sums when comparing. It’s just the way it is that certain positions are paid more than others. It’s harder to find the physical tools necessary to play OL, QB and CB than it is Safety, LB, RB, etc. There’s just fewer athletes that can do whats needed to play those positions. Its totally pointless to compare salary figures across position.

Exactly

It’s just like a doctor getting paid more than a school teacher, even if the school teacher is better at teaching than the doctor is at doctoring.

I know, I know

It’s just so frustrating to see them franchise this guy for two years in a row. Why not reach a deal with him. If you like him, pay him, if you don’t then don’t, but paying him that kind of bling two years in a row seems strange, considering that the coaches thought less of the guy then Willie Colon and Trai Essex.

by SteelerBuddha on Mar 4, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

well true

the starks thing is maddening. No doubt. Sorry, I was more referring to the CB debate than Starks. Not quite sure its possible to defend the money spent on starks last two years. Agreed.

But that said, even if we do get a deal done, hes still going to get a high figure that will be tempting to point to and say ‘wtf’. Anyway, sorry for not reading your comment more carefully Buddha.

by Michael Bean on Mar 4, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Seemed to make more sense last year

Last year, we weren’t sure he’d be any good. He’d played well early, but had seemed to slip in production in ‘06 and ’07. This year, he really stepped it up, I thought. I thought they’d get him a solid, starting LT contract (not highest in the league, but starting range). I’m still hoping, but we’ll see.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Mar 4, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Stop the Mad Maxness (or Max Madness)!!!!

We can’t get anybody else for that money now because it’s already on the books. We’re stuck with Max at $8.4 million because there is no motivation for him to sign a long-term deal here. He is going to be the starting LT on a team that will win a lot of games, maybe even a Super Bowl, and he will become a FA again and again get much more than he is worth from the Redskins or Raiders or whoever.

We can, in 2010, have a guy playing LT for about a quarter of the price that Max will cost us in 2009, and less than a quarter of what some team will be paying him next season. There WILL be a guy available in the first or second round who, either by trading up or by “reaching” for him, can be the starting LT in 2010. He might even be available in the third round. It DOES happen. Marvel Smith, a LT in college, was picked high in the second round when the Steelers were desperate for a tackle in the wake of Leon Searcy leaving in FA and the subsequent Jamaine Stephens disaster. Smith started at RT as a rookie and the only reason he didn’t go to LT in his second year was because there was an established veteran (Wayne Gandy) already in that position. Does it matter now if Smith was considered by draft experts to be a reach or not? No, because his play since then justified the selection. The whole business of only drafting BPA is nonsense. Every team goes into the draft with areas of priority that to a large extent predetermine the best player available. We are not picking a QB in the first round, even if the next Johnny Unitas is available. We are not going to pick another RB in the first round. If we sign Bryant McFadden we are not going to pick another CB in the first round. We are not likely to pick another OLB in the first round unless James Harrison becomes a Mormon and undertakes two years of school building volunteer work in Borneo. Hands up anyone who thinks we should pick ILB James Laurinaitis in the first round? Tight end Brandon Pettigrew? Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks? We already have good young players in those positions locked up (or potentially secured through franchise tags) for years of service.

The only way out of this mess is to draft a guy who can make Max expendable. I don’t care how the Steelers do it, just get it done.

by steeler.lifer on Mar 4, 2009 1:32 AM EST reply actions

yeah

i dont like franchising Max, especially after transition tagging him last year. And ideally, we draft o-line in the first round. and again in the third. with d-line in the middle, or perhaps a CB/FS…. but who knows what each pick will bring? If you focus on only your weaknesses, you can miss out on fortifying a strength, say drafting towards a dominant D, which may lead you to a title….

—-Also, this business with keeping guys like starks, simmons, and kemo around, I believe, has a lot to with roster flexibility. As the draft comes after the bulk of FA, the FO keeps its options open by hedging its bets, putting money up front into average (possibly worse) o-linemen, so they do not have an even bigger weakness there. then, we are free to make a BPA pick, should one arise (last draft, there were 2 to open with) Remember, we have such limited roster space and cap space, that Some part of the team will take a hit. The FO just minimizes that negative, while searching for value anywhere (just about) and accentuating those positives.

"Only drafting BPA is nonsense"

Thank you. I see alot of BPA talk and it drives me crazy. What if BPA is a linebacker or tight end or quarterback or running back or safety or wide receiver. tt would be sheer lunacy to draft BPA in a great majority of positions. Bunk BPA once and for all. BPA is for the Lions or Browns or a team that has more holes than Swiss cheese. We have one glaring weakness. FIX IT. We have two other concerns with depth and future, address those also after a round or two. I do not want BPA, I want what we need.

I don't think anyone is saying "ONLY"

At least I’m not. I also think the word “glaring” for weakness may be overstated. Nevermind that is a matter of opinion. It is glaring to you. If you are looking for a line that will hold for 10 seconds while Ben scrambles that’s not going to happen. Do they have a need on the line. Yes. By the way the Lions and Browns do not draft BPA. At least not the way the Steelers do. Let’s face it the Steelers do it, so get used to it.

Let me clarify this before I'm misunderstood

I’m not saying the Steelers draft BPA only. I am saying if someone that is high on their list is on there, say #10 is on their list and the first lineman on their list is #36: Who do you think they are going to pick?

I don't need a line that will "hold" for 10 seconds (love your choice of words)

Just a line whereby our running back doesn’t get tackled at the five when we are at the one….Super Bowl….Colts….Chargers….Cowboys…..Not to mention the Eagles game, were it a boxing match instead it would have been stopped by Mills Lane.

agreed

I talk about BPA a lot, mostly because that is what it seems like we have been doing in the draft, at least recently. Exceptions are there, we see Pola slip, we move up to get him, etc. But, the FO is going to go for value, which needs to happen in a capped situation, and was probably more important before Heinz field, when the team could not really afford to push up near the cap.

It can also take time to address a particular need on the team, the secondary used to be a yearly difficulty, along with the WR’s, if it is not the o-line’s turn soon, I would be surprised. But personally, I only would fret if this costs us long term success, which this glaring weakness has not prevented as of now.

Okay thanks good stuff

So with all that being said and the digression on the PBA, being our consistant stragegy on Day 1 (can u say PAT WHITE) hehehe

PWhite look real good on NFL network this morning(may have been a repeat), the thing I like the best about him was his attitude, “get me on the field, I just wanna play, whichever position helps the team the most” (shotty paraphase). Return man!

Seriously though – this leaves us in a real problem if Monster MAX will not sign a longterm contract.. No money for Deebo, Miller or even our 2009 Draft class ( I think Blitz or someone stated earlier we spent 4Mil last year).

1. Who is gonna renegotiate to give us CAP room?
2. Who we sending packing to make CAP room?
3. Has the FO given up on resigning BMAC, extending HMiller, HWard & Deebo?
4. Is the FO banking on BDavis taking over for Deebo after 2009? that is just scary!!!!!

GO STEELERS!!!!

I like Pat

but not with too high a draft pick. I think he’ll be gone. By the way there was a day when we would have cringed at Deboo taking over for Porter.
