Galloway?

We had our very first free agent sighting today, as Joey Galloway came to visit.

This kind of reminds me of Terrence Mathis coming in in the 2002 season.  I'm not sure how I would feel about this if he were to sign here.  He wasn't productive last year, mainly due to injuries, but had over 1000 yds in 2007.  Any thoughts out there?

Interesting

Not a bad idea at the right price. He’s an older vet not too far removed from decent productivity & could settle in nicely for a year or two at 3rd while Limas continues to grow. At the right price I like it.

let new england have him

i’m still scarred from the ‘94 championship game when san diego beat tim mc kyer deep for the decisive score in the 4th qtr. that signing didn’t work out, nor did terrance mathis, allen rossum, chad brown (part II). vets at the end of their careers is a new england thing. let them sign joey galloway…

Galloway is 37

I played QB in flag football at that age, but NFL receiver?

37

He is old at 37 but as ark said he was over 1,000 a couple years ago. If he were to come, it would’t be with any sort of long term expectations. Even at his age, he’s more than likely got the juice to be a solid #3 for a year or two. Are we really comforatible with Limas as 3rd at this point? I’m not.

Juice is not the problem

staying healthy is. If he can stay on the field that’s good. If he ends up doing the Staley profile in grey sweats forget it.

Agreed

Dude was brought in to be our starting TB which by definition takes a lot of punishment. This is a different scenerio. As a 3rd reciever, he shouldn’t take too much of a pounding. If the FO were to make that move, they’d have a pretty good feel for his health status. With his experience, after he and Ben get their timing down my guess would be that Tomline would give him a bit of a break during the week like he does for Hines. That would allow our younger guys to get more reps. Thumbs up here, but again only if the price is right.

Price

Yeah, if he’s a 1 year, vet min signing, I don’t mind it. Surely he could replace the production that we got from Nate last year. And, maybe Sweed will even beat him out.

I think not having a veteran WR to compete for the 3rd spot hurts the young recievers

When you have Martin Nance, Limas Sweed, and Dallas Baker competing for a third spot a lot of the same mistakes will be made by the rookies. (Route Running, Dropping Balls, etc.) Joey Galloway or another veteran should have the mental mistakes out of his system and be able to compete and challenge the young guys with superior focus.

Joey's mental mistakes

are from bad memory. You know…alzhimer’s setting in.

interesting point

Isn’t that what coaches are for? But, you have a good point that having a vet to push these young guys should help motivate them to eliminate mistakes.

I'm not sure ...

that being 37 is the benchmark. It’s what JG can do on the field at 37 that matters. I played rugby with some folks that age that could flat out get it done. I think it amounts to price and what player might not get a roster spot to make room for him.

He's got enough gas in the tank

Yes, he was hurt last season, but he had 3 (YES 3) back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons before that. The guy might be old, but he is FAST for 37. He has a few good years left, and is in great shape for his age. Sure, he has had his share of injuries throughout his career, but I think the reward is greater than the risk here. I mean, he’s not going to be expecting big money, so if they sign him to a 1-year deal (with an option for a 2nd), there won’t be any long-term ramifications. It gives a cushion for the younger WRs to develop.

Bring it

I say bring him on, It’ll be great to see him blow bye safeties, then stop and wait for the underthrown deep ball like Nate did all last year. Uhhhh?? Wait , maybe Sweed is the better choice. He was right on time for the deep ball, just didnt catch it.
