AFC Championship 2009/2010: Steelers vs Patriots?
Woah! Hold on. That's right. I went there.
Okay guys, who are the two best teams in the AFC this past decade? If you picked the Steelers and the Patriots, pat yourself on the back.
Now, who was the best team in the league last year? Correct, we were.
So who was arguably the best team in the league, and most certainly the best team in the AFC the year before that? Yes, them.
And, who is the most improved team in the AFC and maybe the league this offseason? We'll have to see how things play out after the draft, but right now the Patriots are making better moves than anyone and they have a pantload of picks sitting under Belicheck's hoodie.
Taking that into account I think the possibilty emerges that we see the boys in black and gold battle it out with the Patriots next January.
"Great", you say. "Nice hypothetical, BoS. Can I have my money back now?"
Wait! We just got to the good part. Think of how awesome that game would be. Two dynasties battling it out for team of the decade status. The Patriots fighting to cement their legacy, capture their fourth title while the bitter taste of their last defeat is still fresh in their mouths. Tom Brady coming back from a huge injury to prove he still has it and leave his mark on the game. The Steelers, moving on to their seventh, playing their hated rival in the playoffs for the first time since spygate, for the first time with Tomlin. The Patriots, a team unto which we have been served bitter defeat after bitter defeat, until one day in 2008 when we brought the house down around their ears. The chance at last to erase all of those ugly memories, those tragic defeats that seemed inexplicable at the time. The Crabby Jawa vs Iron Mike. I don't know about you guys but the possibility of this gets me hot for teacher. It's a dream scenario, and if we're lucky it just might become a reality.

4th times a charm
My Ravens have had an incredible off season. Our GM Ozzie Newsome has been a “wizard” once again, and we will be there again. Don’t be surprised if we’re playing the Pats in January while you sit on the sofas this time!

You should check with the Raven's FO
in case you didn’t hear, the official word is that the Raven’s are scared to play Pittsburgh in primetime, let alone the playoffs.

Scared?
Did we ever say we were scared? Nope. Why do we have to play in Pittsburgh on primetime a 3rd straight year? And, did you know that if they had us play you guys in the opening on primetime, the Ravens would have had to play their first 3 games on the road because of the Orioles schedule?
Grow up and get something new to say you fake fan.

You are on the Steelers site. I’ll agree that if he brings that stuff to your blog you can yell at him for saying the same old things. But we’re reading Steelers stuff from Steelers fans, and while I really enjoy your contributions I don’t think it’s fair to yell at us for defending our case, even if it’s an argument you’ve heard before.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Tomlin’s prediction come true next season, though I wouldn’t like it. Regardless, I got my dream scenario with you guys last season, when we triple thumped you culminating in a trip to the Superbowl. So no disrespect, but I don’t fantasize anymore about kicking the crap out of you guys, we already did it so hard you’ll be trying to live it down the better part of the next decade. :O

losing an amazing D coordinator in rex ryan, a pro bowl line backer in bart scott, and a solid safety in jim leonards doesnt sound to amazing to me

I'm really getting tired of this
Scott’s play was not at a Pro Bowl level or, you know, he would’ve made the Pro Bowl, we’ve replaced numerous better defensive coaches than Ryan and excelled, and Leonhard was a damn backup.

How do you know
You would be telling us the exact same thing we are saying to you if you lost some key guys. We have trust in our team and know our team. We were fine when Jamie Sharper left. We were fine when Ed Hartwell left. And we will be fine now that Bart left. Jim Leonhard wasnt even our starter, which is something average football fans like yourself do not realize. McAlister has lost basically everything that made him a premier CB in this game and has missed more games then played in the last 3 years.
Addition by subtraction in our case here.

but I sure remember leonhard making some plays this past year… I was relieved to see him go to the new jersey jets…

He had one interception during the regular season
We were beating Cincy 30-3 or something like that, and Leonhard picked off Palmer, Jordan Palmer.
He made some nice plays in the playoffs, but I can honestly tell you that he was a complete gadget player and nothing special in the least.
I would’ve preferred to have kept him as a nice rotational guy, but he was nothing more than that on our team.

if leonhard sucks so much
why DID you guys like him so much?
Like Leonhard over Landry
Sorry, but I must not have seen the same guy when Ed Reed was hurt. Landry was absolutely lost out there, as was everybody else. Sure, he hits, but so does Leonhard, who also much more versatile and in on almost every tackle in the secondary. Landry wasn’t a cover man, and while he could hit, he wasn’t as solid a tackler as the little white guy.

Its more about the system
Landry was our 3rd leading tackler his rookie and 2nd year, so I do not get where you say he is not a solid tackler.
His rookie year, he had 4 interceptions. Leonhard stepped up big for us, thats why we liked him so much. You gotta love a guy who made a team through a freaking try out, is criticized cause hes 5’8" and a goofy looking white boy.
But, its all about the system he played in. Teams refused to move the ball in Ed Reed’s direction most games, so they thought to take advantage of little white boy, jimmy leonhard.
We have 2 other Safeties that can fill Jimmy’s spot if Landry went down again. Landry WILL be a pro bowl player one day.

I disagree with most of what Rexx says
And don’t post on Baltimore Beatdown, so please don’t lump me in with that opinion.
If you were to ask me, I’d tell you that Dawan Landry is better than Jim Leonhard in every single facet of the game. His size, physicality, coverage skills, reading of a quarterback, and playmaking ability are all far superior in my opinion.

I dont
Our secondary was basically the primary reason we did not get as far as we wanted. We added so much depth to our FA and got younger, faster, and healthier. Anyone can fill in Bart’s spot, just like we have the past 10 years with that position. Produce a pro bowler, let him go. Produce a pro bowler, let him go. Well it happened with Bart. Jason Brown is unproven and overrated. We have a veteran 6 time pro bowler who is rarely injured.
Could it be the bitterness of Pitt not signing one FA so far?

Anyone can fill in Bart’s spot, just like we have the past 10 years with that position.
That’s a gross exaggeration, but we’re lucky to have McClain/Barnes/Gooden on our team as they’re extremely capable. The point is that we have capable fill-ins on our roster right now, so the loss of Bart is fixable.
Jason Brown is unproven and overrated.
Again, you’re blowing things out of proportion to prove your point. I agree that he wasn’t a monumental loss, but keeping him definitely would’ve been in our favor as he secures a pivotal position for 6-9 years. Brown was a hard working lineman who rarely, if ever, missed games while anchoring a surprising young and inexperienced line.
Could it be the bitterness of Pitt not signing one FA so far?
They’re bitter about keeping together their Super Bowl winning team?
Instead, I think it’s easy to blow off our offseason because a couple of big names left while less known guys were brought in.

Heh, bitter about not siging FAs. That’s rich. Have you payed attention to any other team in your division?? We are NEVER players in the FA market. Few of us ever want to. It’s just not the way this FO operates. Sure, every year there is a player or two that we dream about, but I’ll settle with allowing this stellar FO to do it’s job and I’ll keep watching us win games.

For all the possible losses we were facing in free agency, Oz managed to replace them with equally talented, more affordable players, and has even corrected are biggest weakness over the past few years, CB depth.

I don’t know if I agree on the center position. Birk is past his prime where Brown was entering it. I’ll agree the fall off isn’t too steep, but take it from a team that lost it’s center and then lost it’s identity. It’s tough to replace the signal caller of your o-line.

Brown was good
But he wore down in the playoffs last season. We would have loved to have kept him but not for the ridiculous contract the Rams gave him. For what we were dealing with, Birk was the best we could have hoped for, and I don’t see much drop off, but that is to be seen.

The Ravens
We have to realize that the ravens have the same easy schedule we do with exceptions of two games. I see them making the playoffs this year if flacco keeps his same level of play. I still say the steelers go 6-0 in the division this year and maybe 5-1. The Ratbirds keep saying they can just plug in LBs and D-Coordinators but like with we saw with the Broncos at the running back position (we thought they couldd just plug anyone in) this year – after a while what you plug in isn’t as good as what you had. So there may be a drop-off. I don’t think their aging defense will matter that much, what will matter is injuries, ray always have those boys ready to play and he is more emotional and experience so he doesnt have to produce like he used to. Ravens have a tendency to get injuried a lot and I’m not sure why. I know injuries come with the game, but when you look at this year – losing your top two CBs, starting Safety, and your best LB (Suggs) get hurt for the AFCCG, thats tough. I mean think how our defense would be if our starting two CBs, best LB and clark went out for a game. The major question is does flacco improves or not? Or does he even keep the same level of play? I personally thinks he hits a sophmore wall because of how he played last year, he was no matt ryan. Which means he didn’t have to throw as much. Now defenses will start gunning for him and game-planning his tendencies -there is a reason why derek anderson had a bad year this year. Just like when all the dallas fans thought Romo was the second coming of Aikman, it takes more than one season to evaluate a QB. I give the ravens D mad respect though because they never made excuses and played through injuries and played like 17 straight weeks of football with no rest. I hate them and they Stank but you gotta respect that. The fact that we beat them three times last year makes it easier to say that. While I don’t expect the ravens to repeat their success this year, 6-10 won’t be their record. It’ll be around 9-5 or 10-6

The Patriots lost their edge when the league took away their camera’s and cheating ways. As for their off-season, signing a bunch of old guys to add to the mix of a bunch of other old guys only makes for a tired team come play-off time.
To the Purple Browns fans, we beat you 3 times last year, and your begging not to play the Steelers in prime time……Not to mention your best LB, yes I said it, best LB Bart Scott is now playing for the J.E.T.S.
Oh and your QB……..Well, I will put this lightley, he is NO Big Ben. He falls apart under pressure and Harrison and Woodley love meeting in the middle to sack his ass…… You have no WR’s and your defense lost it’s best player and leader while the rest of the guys only get older. Suggs
Wasn’t brought to NY for a couple of reasons. Franchising him being the first. Second, not only did the Jets spend big money on a high pick in Vernon Gholston at the OLB position, they also spent big money on free agent Calvin Pace as well. What sense would it make to spend big time money on three players at the same position?

Maybe not inside
But I REALLY like Jameel McClain. I hope I spelled that right. As a former Syracue season ticket holder, I watched the worst coaching staff in America mismanage the most talented player on the team first hand. They moved McClain from DE to OLB to MLB back to DE and even put him in at DT from time to time. Now there is nothing wrong with having a versatile player, but you have to give a guy some time at one spot to learn it and have a chance to develop his talents there. I believe the only reason he wasn’t drafted was because he never showed his true ability at one position.
In my opinion his skills translate to OLB, but if he can play inside I’m sure he will learn to play there just as well. He may be the new guy on the block, but he can play, and deserves a good look from the coaches. I wanted him to be the Steelers next undrafted steal at LB.

Till the Steelers actually beat them, I have to respect Tom and the Hoodie. Damn them to hell. The hoodie out coaches Cowher in 01 for the entire first half, which proved to be enough to let the 2 crazy special teams tds hold up. Then, in 04, (did they know, which blitz we were bringing???) they score on what? the 2nd , 3rd play of the game. Either way Troy bit on the pump fake and Brady made a perfect throw to beat single coverage, Cowher, again, refused to go off script, and maybe attempt a first down pass, and the Hoodie had his way the rookie Ben in predictable third and long situations. Perhaps the Steelers will beat them, perhaps they will avoid running a slow developing, play action fake, where Ben turns his back completely to the Pats D, only to turn around and see Richard Seymore about to drop him for a 12 yard sack (out of field goal range), because OF COURSE THEY DIDNT BITE< IT WAS 3RD AND 11 FER CRISSAKE!!!!!!!! Ravens
As for Bart Scott, we’ll find out if hes good. Remember, Ray Ray got Ed Hartwell a good pay day a few years back and where is he. Suggs is the real deal, admit it, we’d all have welcomed him opposite Joey before Woodley came along . Honestly, the unibrow, scares me a bit. He has a true cannon, was just a rookie , and played pretty kool and showed some guts. If they get him a big fast wr, I dont like it. That being said, we smoked their asses three times, Rays gettin older, and Santonio owns them. I am bummed that signing Hartwig last year means we didnt get Matt Birk and they did. He’s the type of free agent o- line guy I expect them to get, in the Will Woolford, Jeff Hartings mold. First round talent worth paying for. But the steelers dont even sniff the superbowl with Mahan, so I cant really complain .

Let me just say I dont think they compete hard this year. They have the 4th toughest sched, an aging defense, a repaired QB albeit a good one, and nobody at RB.

crack me up, talking smack about your predictions. Did anyone predict the Steelers winning it all? Did anyone predict the ravens in the afc championship? Or the pats losing brady, finishing 11-5 and missing the playoffs? It’s one thing to predict how the season will play out, but trash talking your predictions in a league that it is a constant state of flux is bizarre.
And to say that the ravens will have a drop off cuz they lost the least talented LB and a back up S is ridiculous. It’s basically the same team as before. Just because Ryan left doesn’t mean shit. How many def coordinators have they replaced over there and still won? Anyone saying they are not worried about the Ravens this year is either lying or delusional.
by steelerark on Apr 13, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
count me as delusional
even last year, i wasn’t worried about them and I have people around me to vouch for that, they thought I was crazy, but I just don’t worry about the purple browns, i have way too much confidence in ben and tomlin and our D for that plus our offense is gonna get better without even having to draft players, Sweed will improve, Mendenhall is gonna be there and I expect the O-line to be better with more experience. So if we can just get some fresh legs on the D-Line and replace a corner and the D can hold par why would I be scared if the O can avg. 3 Tds a game?

Because of if.
If is the most important word in all of those points. I hope to see all of them come true, but what if they don’t.

RaTbird Losers
You make me laugh. Most Steeler fans could care less what you people say on your boards. Why do you come here? You got thumped this year. Accept your triple beat down and your role in the AFCN. This thread was about the Steelers playing the Patriots, Not the loser Ravens.
