Guess The Steelers Prime Time Games - Win Stuff!

Ok, contest is pretty simple. With the schedule coming out at 7 pm eastern time, we'll finally get an idea of the Steelers exact 2009 schedule by day's end. Who thinks they have an idea about which Steelers games will be featured on national television? We know that Week 1 against Tennessee will, but what others? There's a slew of potential match-ups with big-game and mass-market appeal. Which will get the nod for either Sunday Night, Monday Night, or Thursday Night football (NFLN)?

Rules - 2 points for every correct game guessed; -1 point for every incorrect prediction. Winner gets a Steelers themed t-shirt that a friend and I have designed that I will be presenting to the site in the forthcoming weeks.

Here are our opponents, even though we don't know the exact order:

2009 Schedule For the Pittsburgh Steelers

Home Games:
Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals
Cleveland Browns
Oakland Raiders
San Diego Chargers
Tennessee Titans
Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings

Away Games:
Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals
Cleveland Browns
Denver Broncos
Kansas City Chiefs
Miami Dolphins
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions

Note #1. Don't include Tennessee. We all know that's primetime.

Note #2  While we're on the subject of contests, be sure to enter Mocking The Draft 's Mr. Irrelevant contest.

shit

I think it’s past your bedtime MaLor! I know you secretly want to like the Steelers because of how awesome we all are here. Do you really want to rock a Mike Tomlin t-shirt? Luv ya :)

Bed Time?

Its 3 pm. I still got 2 more classes to go to and surf SB Nation.

And of course I got a crush on the Steelers. Oh yea, Rexx beat you to the whole shirt thing. Got our Baltimore Beatdown shirts about 3 months ago. But, if I win, I can finally replace the terrible towel with the shirt for toilet paper!

nice. well, these shirts aint promos for BTSC. There are stencils of the sickest, baddest dude in all of coaching, from tee ball to the NFL – Michael Tomlin. I’m not sure it’d quite work with Mr. Harbaugh. Something screams decidedly uncool about him compared to Senor Tomlin.

6 primetime games!

Has 6 ever been given to one team in a season?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Apr 14, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

yea

Last year Steelers had Browns, Jaguars, Bengals, Redskins, Ravens. Well, maybe not 6, but 5. Surely some team has had 6 though before.

by Michael Bean on Apr 14, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

he’s hoping for a split with two of those games. For instance he is torn between Denver and Miami. So he decides not to go for 2 with Miami but take the one since he feels one of the two will a primetime game. It could be less of a gamble. One chance at two points or two chances at one.

I'm thinking 5, and no, not a foot long :P

oh and im pretty sure the league is allowed to give a MAX of 5 primetime games per year.

My picks?
@ Baltimore
San Diego
@ Cincinnati (we’ve had two prime time games against them in two years. hopefully that’ll continue)
Green Bay
(and yeah, i’m only writing down four because Tenn. is already set :D)

by BlackandGold on Apr 14, 2009 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

^ source for 5 games a year

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/04/05/flexible_scheduling/

Q. Is there any limit on the number of primetime appearances a team can make in one season?

A. Yes, 29 of the 32 teams can appear a maximum of five times in primetime games each season, with just three teams potentially playing a sixth game in primetime.

by BlackandGold on Apr 14, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry for the extra reply

forgot to ask, is this with or without flexible scheduling?? Cuz we know how that can mess things up (AKA games after week 10 i believe are subject to change)

by BlackandGold on Apr 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

No

But for the record, we could get a 6th max with flex sched as mentioned.

But yeah up to 5 and only based off the real schedule

Cleveland at home
At Baltimore

Boring Schedule

The schedule is boring either way.

The Ravens will be tough as usual, but who else do we play? Tennessee, Minnesota, Chicago, Miami and San Diego. We might lose those games (though I have a hard time seeing us fall to the Vikings, Bears or Dolphins). Still, I’ll put my money down now for a playoff birth…

by PaulMorel on Apr 14, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

oh man

Count me in for a big wager on Steelers winning division this year.

by Michael Bean on Apr 14, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously

Amen to this. I cant see it not happening barring a severe injury to someone on the cover of madden or something like that.

by Mechem on Apr 14, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t bet against the steelers, but I wouldn’t be laying down a huge wager for them to win the division. We have a very similar schedule to the ravens and they probably won’t regress much. I would lay a hunk of dough down for the steelers making the playoffs, but it won’t surprise me at all if the ravens and steelers have good W-Ls to finish the season off.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Apr 14, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I said, I won’t bet against the steelers (and actually, don’t bet at all), but if I did I’d take those odds.

hehe, was just thumping my chest

But I really dont think Baltimore’s going to be as good. Will explain in detail this offseason I’m sure at some point. Different reasons, but somewhata long same lines as my thoughts about CLE last offseason.

by Michael Bean on Apr 14, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I secretly agree with you, but I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment.

If you want further ammunition for explaining it in detail you could look at the historical trend of baltimore’s W-L record.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Apr 14, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

After all the free agency moves, I have been getting that feeling too. Unless they have a great draft, Baltimore could be in trouble.

The defense has been downgraded by free agency, and it is already pretty old. And they haven’t made the necessary moves to give Flacco the supporting cast he needs.

It’s too early to tell, but if Baltimore doesn’t have a good draft, then they could slide.

by PaulMorel on Apr 15, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Wrong again

We lost a starting linebacker and a back up Strong Safety in FA. How is that major losses? Bart Scott’s position can and will be filled, just like it was when Jamie Sharper left, and Ed hartwell left and Adalius Thomas left.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Apr 15, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

however

I dont think the schedule is boring.

Miami has a really damn creative interesting offense.

Minny has the best player in the league I’d argue in AP.

Tennessee is legit and probably actually going to be a better team than last year, even though odds say their record isn’t as good, erhaps by as many as two or three games. Still, they’ve been building for 2009 and 2010, and got a little bit of a lucky head start on that. I think they’ll be better though across the board. Plus, thats Opening Week which will be exciting.

Bengals and Browns games are usually kinda meh, but their rivalry games! So it’s easy to get up for them.

No need to explain about Baltimore. Just blood baths every time.

I’m really looking forwward to Oakland game for simple reason that we need to whoop their ass to avenge for that totally embarassing loss against them in 2006. Gave up 75 yards or something on defense and lost. Unreal. Cowher had no business playing Ben that week.

Chicago and KC are great midwest oldschool football towns – you can’t pencil wins in those buildings, even if their teams are so-so. Very distinct possibility we lose 1 of the 3 between those two and Detroit.

San Diego will play us tough as well.

It’s the NFL! Eevery week’s intense for the most part.

And Paul! You my friend were a frequent participant in the Open Threads. Forget how freaking tense and emotionally exhausting this past year was most weeks? Sure, we played better teams, but I don’t think we’re dominant enough up front on offense, or at least nothing suggests we will be unless our draft selection(s) just step in right away, to really blow any one away. And I personally think Ben will take a few steps forward this year, but we all know he’ll still put us in a few unnecessarily dicey situations with inexplicable bad decision making. :)

Cant wait!

by Michael Bean on Apr 14, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

lol ... true

You make good points, and I’m sure that I will see it that way in a few weeks.

I guess I am just bitter that we still have to wait 4 months for preseason!

I didnt

Dammit! I thought the packers and steelers would make for a huge audience. Cant believe they didnt do that one.

Why does NFLN always put up the gayest matchups? Like last year against cinci, now this year against cleveland. Its like why do you do this?

Steelers and the Pack have two of the biggest fanbases, a matchup equals lots of viewers.

But whatever. I figured broncos were a likely candidate.

by Mechem on Apr 15, 2009 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Mechem, Mechem

You’d be rolling along nicely for the longest time my man. Matchups in the NFL don’t have sexual orientation.

To your point though – yes, NFLN gets dumpy ass games for the most part on those Thursday night games. But Cleveland will be better than last yaer. Could be a very exciting game.

by Michael Bean on Apr 15, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i will calculate totals soon enough and send emails to winner(s?)

Thanks all for participating! Like this schedule – going to be a fun year with some serious trap games but lots of potential for great record.
