What is your favorite Tomlinism?
We all love how Mike Tomlin gets valuable points across with minimal verbiage. His short, catchy phrases are becoming legend in Steeler Nation. His most recent perhaps is the one I read where he told Limas Sweed to "under-promise and over-deliver." What a great way to get a point across to a young wide receiver that talk is cheap and only actions and results matter. My all-time favorite is "together we all eat," talking about the essence of teamwork in just four short words. He said that when talking about how important the pass rush was to the coverage and vice versa.
I know some may say this stuff is obvious, but I think Tomlin has a way of reaching his players that really hit home. So, what is your favorite Tomlinism or message or mannerism that you really love about the guy?

The newest one I heard...
Don’t talk too much. Under promise, over deliver.
Love that. So true. If you fall short on a promise, you look bad. If you match what you say you look good. But if you exceed all previous promises, you look great. Maybe it’s just the freshest in my mind, but it’s good.

Not so much a 'Tomlinism', but a quote following the SB win.....
“Steeler football is 60 minutes. It’s never going to be pretty. Throw style points out the window, but these guys will fight to the end. We didn’t blink.”
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

great quote
I loved this quote from the moment I heard it. Was it after the SB though? For some reason I think it was after an important game earlier, maybe a playoff game?
This is a little long but captures him perfectly in my mind...this was the day after the Super Bowl Win
"For coaches and players it’s different. My partner, Kevin Colbert (Director of Football Operations), is already starting preparation for the draft, and free agency first. I’m going to take a day or two, take my kids to school. I’m going to play catch up with those guys. That’s the cycle that is this thing. That’s what makes it beautiful. That’s what makes it built for the competitors that are in this business and in this game. Players, of course, need to allow their bodies to recover. This football team that we work with, essentially, we worked a month longer than their competitors that they’ll be competing and vying for that championship with in ’09. I’ve got to have to have some sense of that, understand that, that we’re a month behind in getting ready for ’09. We’ve got to be thoughtful in how we prepare our football team. Our preparation has to be focused on quality, and not necessarily quantity. I understand that, but from a coaches’ perspective, I’ll quickly fall in with our personnel people in regards to getting ourselves ready for free agency and the draft."

this quote makes me wonder
what camp will be like this year. Is he going to ease them in, or push them and remind them that just because they won the championship that they can’t take it easy?
so many great ones
Of course, there’s the distinction between great “quotes” and great “tomlinisms”. I think the latter would refer to frequently quoted material?
One of my favorite quotes from last year:
Every morning when I come to work, I walk past five Lombardis, not five rushing titles.
Favorite tomlinism? Hmmm…I like excuses, which he frequently talks about:
“The reality is that with that being excuse-making, we aren’t going to make them.”
I’m surprised that Tomlinism is not a wikipedia page. It should be, but I’m lazy.
Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.
That first one
I thought that was an excellent way to say what needed to be said.
Every morning when I come to work, I walk past five Lombardis, not five rushing titles.

I really really like the latest one too maryrose. Very true. Maybe most important thing to learn in business and relationships as well, not just football. So great and for Limas, probably a wonderful and imperative lesson to learn. We’ve read about how Limas tries sooooo hard to impress – perhaps too much so. I’d imagine that some of that unnecessary effort to please comes in the form of hollow words. Great stuff
Whoops
excpet why did he fake an injury and hurt the team when he screwed up. That rarely happens above Little League. Not even Pop Warner ( I coached both ) .
Although he didn’t come up with it I liked his use of “Iron sharpens iron.” It really captures that easy schedules do not make for a better team. It’s always best to play the best as your team knows it can rise to the occasion.

From his thoughts about Michael Vick
“I thought the basis of our country was built on second chances and redemption.” He also broke out another quote of scripture in the same vein as ‘iron sharpens iron’: “Those without sin cast the first stone, if you know what I mean?”
Probably the only thing thus far that I disagree with him on.
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

My favorites
I’m paraphrasing some here, others i found here (check that link out!). My countdown:
10. Because it shows his intelligence and sense of humor:
I am not a proponent of the Gatorade bath
9. In regards to the high level of competition faced by the Steelers in 2008
Iron sharpens iron
8. On not backing down and embracing challenges:
There are 30 other teams I’m sure that would love to have the burden that we have this [Super Bowl] week. So from that standpoint we’re going to embrace it.
7. Because it’s hilarious that Coach T talks like a cliche sports movie
We don’t live in our fears, we live in our hopes
6. His players are, and should act like…
Professionals
Being professional and professionalism are important concepts to Tomlin. It’s about intangibles more than skills, in a sense. It’s
5. Tomlin is often…
Not interested
For instance, he’s not interested in playing bs games with reporters. He’s not interested in players evaluation’s of his performance – he’s got a job to do. He’s not interested in distractions – pure focus.
4. At his first training camp, asked why he was wearing black pants and longsleeves in 90 degree heat, Tomlin said something like
“I’m wearing black so that my players won’t come to me complaining about the heat, because they know i don’t care”
Tough as nails.
3. Just recently, i loved this, on next season and whether his players will still be “hungry to win”:
Hungry is a word that I’ve been analyzing here of late. It’s not hunger that drives me, it’s not hunger that needs to drive our football team. Hunger and thirst are things that can be quenched. We have to be a driven group, we have to seek greatness.
2. After the loss to the Jets last year, Tomlin said he expected 100% each week and after a reporter said “you know you can’t expect that…” Tomlin said:
I refuse to acknowledge that. We live week-to-week and we’re preparing this week to be at our best… I don’t want our level of preparation or focus to be in response to last weeks performance. I want it to be because we have a football game. That is the only way we are going to be great and that is if we understand that all these games are equally weighted. Every time you take the field you have to come to play.
1. My favorite:
“The standard of expectation does not change”
Tomlin says this a lot and means it. When a career backup takes the field in place of an ALL-PRO DE, he’s not a career backup. He’s the starting DE for the Pittsburgh Steelers and he better damn play like it.

tomlinisms
How about “When the rubber meets the road…” OR “moving forward….”
great post
A comprehensive list of Tomlinisms will undoubtedly be part of the first book written about him. Great quote about hunger and thirst being quenched. Lots of other good ones above. I liked his quote about Sweed coming back with some plays after dropping the bomb vs. Baltimore and then costing the team a timeout. “He wouldn’t have to respond (to a bad play) if he’d just catch the football.”
Not a Tomlinism, but something he said worth reading again
“One of the things that has bugged me the most since Saturday night are people with great intentions saying, `great start’ and `great year,’” said Tomlin. "I appreciate it, but I am not wired like that. Not that I’m a negative guy. Not that I’m a melancholy guy. I am just a football coach. I appreciate that, but there is something we are chasing here and we never will cease that chase. I’m not big into moral victories. We did some good things. We won 10 games. We won our division. It starts there, but it wasn’t as well as I would have liked. The goals I set for myself, I am not bashful about.
It is a challenging gig and I love it. I couldn’t have a nine-to-five. I am not wired that way. At the same time, what makes me tick is the same thing that makes a lot of these guys tick; the challenges, the urgency, the finality of it all and the fact that people care. Steelers Nation is a big source of energy and motivation for me," said Tomlin. “From the outside looking in you respect it. I talked about it when I got here. Being a part of it is different. It is. You want to deliver for Steelers Nation. It is a driving force. It is one of the reasons I am energized. It is awesome.”
yup
thats perhaps the most substantive and important quote from him. Shows what the gig really means to him.

Fave Mike Tomlin Idioms
“We’ve got a big windshield and a small rearview mirror.”
“He eats that by the pound.”
“He’s still got gas in the tank.”
“We’re under the screws.”
“Thoughtfully non-rhythmic.”
San Diego Debacle
The final explanation was the officiating sucked.
Paraphrasing...
I couldn’t find the original but it went something like this….“The more I understand Steeler Nation…the more I want to win.” Coach T is the man!
Kudos to the Rooneys
for picking Tomlin. What an eye for talented head coaches they have!!
Tomlin is the absolute man!!! Cowher obviously was good…but I really feel Tomlin is an upgrade on every level.
His quotes are sometimes funny but always meaningful and poignant:
My favorites…“everyday I come to work I walk past 5 lombardi’s not 5 rushing titles” and then he continued “to those who don’t know Willie, his comments make him appear selfish and immature…of which he is neither.” (I paraphrased a bit since I don’t remember exact words)
Regarding the retirement of Dick LeBeau…“I won’t be around when he wants to have that conversation.”
Classic.
+1
On that one. Bottom line, It’s gonna take quite some time for the rest of the football world to discover what we at Steeler Nation have come to realize (with absolute delight). Tomlin is a great, original talent. They may be naming trophies after him before it is all said and done.

So many to choose from
Coach Tomlin is easily my favorite coach ever. And I’ve been around to remember Coach Noll and Cowher. I realize it’s just been two seasons, but there’s no denying his passion or greatness. He is also the most quotable person in all of sports IMHO. When all is said and done I’m sure a book will come out of his “Tomlinisms”, and I’ll be in the line to get a copy for sure.
The Rooneys deserve all the credit in the world for making this choice in our head coach.

rec'd for Tomlin = favorite coach ever
Not that my perspective historically means much at my age. Anyway, only take slight with most quotable person ever. Can’t agree there. Perhaps most meaningful quotes but Bill Walton has to take the cake there for me. For better or worse, depending on one’s opinion, Walton’s gems are a bit more from the cuff and far more hyperbolic and ridiculous. The question is whether he’s pulling our chains or not when does things like compare Boris Diaw to Beethoven or call Greg Ostertag one of the greatest centers in NBA history after a rare great sequence.
Anyway, I freakin love the future in store for the franchise we love so much because of Mike Tomlin and the Rooneys. As great as the past has been, the future could trump it all in the next ten years, and in particular, the next 3-5 years.

Chuck Noll
Yeah, I’m with you on Tomlin. I think he is something special. But Coach Noll — because of his intense desire for privacy — probably doesn’t get his due.
I just read Tony Dungy’s book: Uncommon, and he quotes Chuck Noll a lot. In fact, he credits Chuck Noll for a lot of his coaching styles and beliefs. I kept thinking: Wow, how come I’ve never heard any of this before? Even now, he just doesn’t give interviews…
Here’s one of my favorite Chuck Noll quotes (from Tony’s book):
“Mercenaries beat draftees — but volunteers crush them both.”
More Noll Quotes...
“Before you can win a game, you must first not lose it.”
“Men are like steel. When they lose their temper, they lose their worth.”
Dungy took from Noll, Tomlin took from Dungy, Thanks to Tony D. for giving back what we gave him.

During the 2007 seasoon
I told my fellow workers that I believe the Steelers will win 4 SB’s in 10 years under Tomlin. I am looking pretty good 2 years in.
I was around during many of the Coach Noll years and I see many similarities in him and Tomlin, plus a whole bunch of new age stuff mixed in. You can make a case that he is a Coach Noll pupil since Chuck Noll begat Tony Dungy and Tony Dungy begat Mike Tomlin. Thin… but still viable.
Its funny, every time my non-sports minded wife sees Tomlin on TV she says “there goes Mr. Cliche.” It cracks me up that she notices his “Tomlinisms.”
Here's one.
“We have a great deal of respect for them or We respect them”
Oh. How about this one. " We respect the process" Which to me means the team has to work hard in practice and studying film.
Miles to go before we sleep....
…before the Super Bowl. How many 21st Century football coaches could take the penultimate line from Robert Frost’s “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening,” and make it the perfect motivator for a football team en route to the big game? Simply jaw dropping. And people wonder why we’re so ga-ga about this guy!
And I love how he tells his men to “honor the game.” He’s talking Steeler tradition and respect.

"NOTHING MYSTICAL"
Coach T used this phrase several times over the last few weeks of the regular season,
As in, “… there’s nothing mystical about it, it’s going to be a physical game (with Ravens) and the team that imposes its will … etc.”
Football is simple: play hard, play 60 min., play as a team … and hit the other team harder than they hit you. Simple.
Good Stuff
Reminds me of some clips of Bill Walsh talking about always beating the other team to the punch. Always be a step ahead. Deliver the blow, don’t receive it. (paraphrased from memory)
Or, in an NFL Films show on the Steelers of the 70’s, many players quoted Noll as saying “whatever it takes.” Meaning that every players must step up for each of his teammates to do whatever it took to win.

“The standard of expectation hasn’t changed” — I think the players really adhere to this.
“Each day I come to work, I walk by 5 Lombardi trophies, not 5 rushing titles” — Have never seen a coach diffuse what could have been a dividing issue on the team between a star and the offensive coordinator with one sentence. Brilliant.
“We will defend every blad of grass” — Something you will hear a lot from our defense this year.
“He fails … he fails in stadiums sometimes” — Something I hope Limas Sweed will use as motivation every day of the offseason.
Post game reaction
“People get too preoccupied with style points. That was a beautiful football game.’’

Like John Madden would say, “Winning is a great deodorant.”

I read all hundred some post's to see if this was here...
And then had to create an account just to add it… so I hope I didn’t miss it somewhere in there. The Tomlinism that I find myself saying most is (and I’m not certain of the wording), “We’re gonna do what it is that we do.” That quote is pure Tomlin: focused confidence. I also like one along the same lines that I heard him use during the St. Vincent College speech linked above. Regarding naysayers, he says, “Its elevator music, you hear it, but you don’t.”

i think someone wanted this one, tingles my spine.
"When you are in other organizations, and I’ve been in other organizations in this league, you recognize that it’s different and you respect it. Until you are a part of it, you have no idea the depths of it. It’s generational, it’s passed down from father to son, and it’s unbelievable. I don’t know if I can use words to eloquently describe the relationships that this organization has with Steeler nation. I know that the more I get to understand it, the more Steeler nation drives me. I want to give them something to be excited about. I want to perform for them. I want to win for them because they are that special."

my fav
is from that very first press conference when he was introduced as the new HC. When his name was thrown into the mix seriously with grimm and whisenhunt, i looked into his background and liked how much he had improved minnesota’s run defense but was still quite skeptical because, come on, we were passing on two great in-house names for an unheard of defensive co-ordinator from the vikqueens! but of course his manner and poetry put me in awe and when asked what kind of football he would bring to the great city of pittsburgh his response was
“we will be a team of attrition”.
now tell me that doesnt sum up the ’08 super bowl champion steelers and steelernation as a whole!

He says it all the time:
It is an honor and a privilege. The delivery is beautiful. Sincere all the way.
"We make no bones about that."
This means that he’s not going to argue, that there is no disagreement on a certain issue.
My favorite Tomlinism...
Gimme dat trophy. Ok maybe he didn’t say, but he should have.
"The team that scores the most points wins."
John Madden
(Master of the obvious)
From his interview during the draft
Quotable
Talking about o-line potential:
“We’re back in the lab this time of year working trying to get better in those areas”
“We pride ourselves in not only evaluating talent, but developing it”
Tomlinisms
Speaking of Kraig Urbik’s potential to start:
“We think he’s capable. Of course, we like the clay.”
