John Madden Retires

After 30 years as a NBC broadcaster, John Madden is finally hanging it up.  I find it sad but also a good thing that his last game was our Super Bowl.  Keep on keepin' on John. Anyways, here's the link.  Thanks for making my football memories great ones John. We will all miss your voice. "Boom!" "bam!"  Anyone have any memories of John's broadcasts that they want to discuss?

wow

Not to be that guy, but this makes me happy. He would get on my nerves every single time I heard him.

Can’t wait to see what idiot they get to replace him though. Carrottop maybe?

mm

Yeah, you kinda have a point there, but I still am gonna miss the way he broadcasted. You knew that he was going to bring some flavor to the game with one of his overly obvious statements. I’m really gonna miss him :( He was so enthusiastic when broadcasting SBXLIII

favorite maddensims

in antithesis of tomlinisms, I’d like to remember some of my favorite maddenisms, including:

“There comes a time in the game where the quarterback has to start playing.”

“When you’re talking about a Mike Shanahan offense, you’re really talking about his offense.”

and

“Here’s a guy who can use his arms and legs at the same time.”

I don't know any

Maddenisms. :)

sad day if you ask me...

There are few legendary broadcasters left in the NFL, and not that many left in all of sports.

Madden wasn’t the best at expressing himself verbally but his emotions and love of the game did come through in his broadcasts. It’s sad to me to lose another voice that has been a big part of football since I can remember.

NBC will struggle to find a replacement that can entertain and explain the game to the casual fans as well as Madden did.

It will certainly be different without seeing him this season.

I liked Maddening

“Now this next play they’re either gonna run the ball or pass the ball”

“What they want to do is score a touchdown here.”

“With all his tumid boasts, he’s like the sword-fish, who only wears his weapon in his mouth.”

“Now that is a sandwich. You take all that and put it between two pieces of bread.”

Anyone remember the nuclear turkeys?

Say what you will about him, but he got the telestrator to be widely used. You know, the thing where he diagrams what just happened with a crayon.

Madden

Good riddance John you fat blubbering talking head. Take the bus to the retirement home.

Sorry for the disrespect BTSC but this clod really irked and bothered me. I didn’t like his long winded stories which I felt took away from the game and Al Michaels professionalism.
I especially didn’t like his charges that the Steelers cheated him in the Immaculate Reception game in 1972. It was fat Madden’s contention that the head ref called upstairs and asked how many security personnel would be available to protect the refs if they called back Franco’s TD. When told “5” the ref according to Madden signaled a Pittsburgh TD (according to Madden and no one else on the scene) While a great story for TV, it is disrespectful to the Pittsburgh franchise, police department and above all it is slander.
He also accused the Rooney’s of intentionally icing down the field prior to the 75 AFC Championship game at 3 Rivers to slow down the Raider’s vaunted vertical game when it is possible and plausible that the 50 MPH winds the night before actually ripped the turf creating problems and turnovers for both teams. Madden never talked about the vicious hit delivered to Lynn Swann that day or the charges of deflated footballs and grease and stickum on his players in Oakland.
I for one am glad to see John retire. Now he can prognosticate endlessly on NFL network about the cheating Steelers, how great a coach he was, how great the Raiders were and how he has man love for Brett Favre.

Omg how do u guys think Collinsworth is solid..

Hes fucking horrible, he makes the game boring and hes some plain and shows little enthusiasum, John has a passion even though his statements were not that good

by 2005steelers4life on Apr 16, 2009 4:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think I am the only one who said hes solid...

And he is in my opionion, and I think he is much better than Phil Simms or Troy Aikmen.

I am still hoping either MNF, or Sunday Night Football gives John Riggins, or Boomer Easison a shot in the booth. They are both a lot better than anybody who is currently doing color commentary.

I’m with you though. The thing I like is that he’ll occasionally really break down the tactics of a play. It’s what I was hoping for outa Jaws, but he’s an idiot while announcing games, unlike when he’s on Matchup.

Turn down the sound

Ever since Madden took over the Sunday night games I’ve turned off the sound and just watched the games. Him being replaced by Collinsworth just means I have to keep doing what I was doing.

obviously you haven't watched greg gumble

I think I saw them call a game together once....

…might have been Mike Tomlin’s first “game” – Hall of Fame game vs Saints.

I loved the game, but lost a day from my life expectancy listening to those two. Gumble is atrocious. If you’re comparing between Collinsworth, Simms, and Aikman there is a poor kettle of fish to choose an anouncer from IMO.

Madden was goofy at times, but at least he had some enthusiasm in his voice.

F**K!!!

Ok I hated Madden, but Collinsworth is the worst! They might as well put an asshole like Jim Rome in there. I guess the mute button on my remote will get some action this season.

it never got weird enough for me

Aw hell no!!

Collinsworth is bad, but...

Collinsworth is a drip, and always seems a little anti-Steeler, but he’s nowhere near as bad as Madden, who made games unwatchable unless, like beercanchuck, you turn down the sound. Early in his broadcast career, when he still seemed to be interested in the game, Madden would provide some decent analysis to go along with his bloviating, but as time wore on he just seemed interested in be a “character.” Speaking as an old fool myself, good riddance to the old fool.

Good deal

Personally I dont mind this one bit. I think first of all, its freaking awesome that the last game he will ever have done is our winning Super Bowl.

Secondly, captain obvious was not exactly the most wonderful guy to have in the booth. I rarely found him that inciteful.

And lastly, for his own sake, he needs to get healthy because at his rate I’ll be amazed if he gets another 3-5 years out of himself.

There is one CBS crew I really liked, couldnt tell you who though. Wasnt the national one. Saw them do a PIT game last year and they did a fantastic job.

Madden -- overrated as a coach; over-rated as a Broadcaster

The best thing about John Madden is watching Frank Caliendo impersonate him.

I am not sure if he actually invented the use of the telestrator, but he is the first guy I remember seeing use it, and I do think that was an innovation. But his stupid sayings were just mind numbing.

The only thing worse than listening to John Madden was watching him jump up and down on the Raiders sideline — man boobs a-flapping.

You younger Steeler fans are lucky that you never had to see that…

It’s a crime that he got into the HOF as a coach. He REALLY got in as a personality. I actually don’t have a problem with him being there… he is famous, after all. But they should have put him in there for what he really achieved: His name was used on the most popular football video game of all time. That’s what he is REALLY famous for,

by MarkJoel66 on Apr 17, 2009 8:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He did a lot for football

He has essentially helped bring in hundreds of fans, and he was the most recognizable face to the game.

Granted I never liked his calling and he basically was not that amazing of a coach, but he was the face of a league for a long long time.

by Mechem on Apr 17, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never saw him coach...

So I hope I don’t sound like an idiot. But over rated as a coach? Second best win percentage ever… that’s ever. 112-39-7, 73 games above .500. If that’s lucky, that’s pretty lucky. I don’t know how he’s over rated, but like I said, I wan’t around… please explain.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Apr 17, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

as a guy who stated above that he hated Madden I will say he was a solid coach that had great players. Like the Oilers of the late 70’s Madden’s Raiders would have won at least another championship had the Steelers not built a dynasty at the same time. The fact that he won 70% of his games is an awesome stat.

Yes -- Over-Rated

Don’t get too caught up in a stat like Winning percentage.

Let me ask you a question: What kind of a coach do you think Barry Switzer was? I mean, he went 12-4 in his first two years as a coach, and then won the Super Bowl… pretty good right?

Except he was using Jimmy Johnson’s team to do it.

John Madden was the 70’s Barry Switzer. He took over a Super Bowl Champion team and managed it to some modest success. His Raiders were notorious underachievers. They lost five AFC Championships in seven seasons.

The year he won the Super Bowl he was greatly aided by the fact that the Steelers lost both of their running backs to injuries before the playoff game.

Honestly, Barry Switzer may have been a better coach…

pssshhh!

John “horse trailer” Madden has been sliding downhill ever since Sommeral (SP?) retired.
He was never that good of a game caller, but ol’ Pat made it worth watching. It was almost literally painful to watch him and Al Michaels together. Call me crazy, but I think another John would be a good replacement. John Goodman. I think it would be fun to see him get all worked up over blown plays and crappy calls/no calls. Anyway, do any of you have a better idea as to who could replace Captain Obvious?

Thank you drive through.

It's alot harder to be a dad than a Steelers fan...

Chris Collinsworth is replacing him...

I would love to see John Riggins in the both though…funny, insightful, and has enough of an edge to make in entertaining.
