OUCH! I Didnt imagine it!

Terms of the deal are disclosed in the BEARS SB BLOG

They got a great QB , but for a high cost as showed below

Imagine Cutler with that defense against the Colts in SB XLI!

Now this defense is old, and not as great as it was!

hmmm...

I’m not a big fan of Cutler, but I approve of the organization being bold with this trade. Cutler’s at least shown that he can run an offense. If the Bears could get a few wide-outs worth their salt it could make for a dangerous team in the NFC.

My office in chicago just about blew up as this news came out. I heard about 5 people simultaneously shouting. I work at a sports company so it’s not surprising, but almost everyone is talking about it.

Reds huh?

I bet Cutler would be a good pitcher, but who would the Reds give the Broncos? Jas? Not sure Jas isn’t going for much in this economy.

Amazing

I personally think its a great fit. They should now try to bring in Torry Holt or Marvin Harrison to tide them over in the WR department. They have an improving O-Line with Pace Picante and they still have a defense. All they need now is some WR’s and they’ll be making a good playoff push.

Heres to me calling them to win one playoff game.

by Mechem on Apr 2, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

YES! I never imagined the Bear's

would do something this smart!

This is like seeing Big Ben in Pittsburgh! Good call on signing Holt, Mechem. That would be a great step 2, because they’ll want to go either WR or Oline in round 2.

by betelgeuse on Apr 2, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Idk how much money they got tho

Signing Pace Picante probably put a dent in their wallets. And of course so will Cutler over the Neckbeard.

You’d like to hope that one of these old but still in game receivers would be willing to play for less.

What sucks is we play the bears this year now.

I think cutler should be applauded

the entertainment value and forum chatter in a normally dry period is well worth it (to non-Bronco fans, at least). Plus people will be able to analyze this trade up and down for years to come.

by vherub on Apr 2, 2009 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

Cutler

It`s a good pickup for the Bear but that is way too much. 2 first rounders? Not worth it. Maybe a 1st and a 2nd at the most.

by SteelerDomination on Apr 3, 2009 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

agree

That’s exactly what I thought. But then I figured Chicago might be trying just as hard to make sure Cutler doesn’t end up with the Vikings or Lions.

by 36chambers on Apr 3, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Good observation

Probably was exactly the case.

Its worth it IMO. Quarterback IS the team. How many games do we win this year without Large Benjamin. Probably not even 8. Think about it. There is no price too high for a quarterback who can PLAY the game. The guy has 8000 and 40+ over the last two years and thats good enough for me.

by Mechem on Apr 3, 2009 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Team is more than QB

It will be interesting to see how Cutler fares with a much worse set of receivers and o-line. I doubt he will be throwing for 4000 yards with the Bears offense. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Orton looks better with the Broncos.

by Steelin on Apr 3, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Worth it?

I’m not sure if it is or isn’t but I’d phrase it like this. Isn’t Ben worth 2 1st rounders to the Steelers? Even 2 firsts and a third? I’m not going to claim that Cutler is as good as Ben, I don’t think that he has the same winner mentality, but he is a hella good QB, better than the Bears have seen in a decade or three. For that I applaud them for making the move. We’ve seen in Pittsburgh that a great defense and good run game will get you far, but most of the time you need the QB position to take you all the way.

by Chicago Steeler on Apr 3, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point Chicago

I think this is just hard for some Steeler fans to digest because two 1st round picks were used. Being a fan of a team that builds through the draft and never mortgages the future for now whether it be FA or the draft, it is hard to understand. I know I would freak if the Steelers didn’t have a 1st round pick next year.

You are right. I would want the same for Ben, and the Bears need a real QB. They have went through what 16 to 20 starting QB’s since 88’? They even tried Jim Miller…ha ha. I think the Steelers only went through 6 or 7, before they drafted Big Ben. The Bears also have a number of 1st round draft busts. Though not a Cutler fan, he is only 25 with all the tools and talent. The Bears just signed Pace for 3 years at LT. They need to get a Vet FA WR, and draft for youth on defense.

by SteelBuckeye on Apr 3, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Good deal for Broncos

Best way to handle this situation is to deal with it quickly and the Broncos did that while getting a lot of draft value in return. Two first-rounders, a third-rounder and Orton for Cutler and a fifth-rounder is a good deal. They now have 11 picks in this year’s draft and of course two first-rounders next year, so they have the ammunition to make another trade for a better developmental option at QB (perhaps Brian Brohm), or target a QB in the first round of the draft. There are a lot of ways they could go and still have enough draft picks around to address their needs on defense.

I don’t think it’s a slam dunk that Cutler will succeed in Chicago. He goes from an offense that was built for him to be effective by an aggressive and protective head coach who encouraged him to gamble, to a team with almost no weapons at wide receiver that is designed to be conservative, has a defense in decline and no first-round picks for two years. He’ll be playing against better defenses in the NFC North and more often in adverse weather conditions. He’s going to get sacked more and have a lot of his bullet passes dropped, playing in front of fans who now expect him to lead the team to a division title. Let’s see how he handles the pressure.

This trade also shows how much of a sweetheart deal the Patriots gave the Chiefs for Cassel and Vrabel, getting only a second-rounder for both.

by steeler.lifer on Apr 3, 2009 1:46 AM EDT reply actions

Reds as in

Redskins. I think they could trade Cutler to the Redskins for Jason Campbell, a 1st round pick, 1 2nd round pick, and a 4rth round pick in 2009 and 2010. Clayton did say that the Redskins would probably be the frontrunners.

The deal they got was better

Are you saying 1st round this year and 2nd +4th next year? They got 2 1st rounders from The Bears. Jason Campbell? They could sign Leftwich right now and get about the same thing as Campbell. I don’t think the Skins woudl give 2 1st rounders and next years 2nd and 4th as well.

I dont think they had the bread

After signing head stomper and others they probably cant break a bill large enough to buy Emo Cutter (get it cause hes depressed and whines).

I’d say though Its a marvel to me that the Broncos could consider Kyle Orton better than Leftwich. Or Garcia. Or a stainless steel mini fridge.

by Mechem on Apr 3, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't understand as well

Orton may be 3 years younger than Leftwich but I don’t think that matters much.

As far as Washington goes, I don’t see any reason (besides money) that the Redskins wouldn’t sign Leftwich and let him compete with Campbell.

I’m not mad Leftwich hasn’t signed anywhere yet. I feel very confident with him backing up Ben, but it puzzles the heck out of me why he hasn’t signed yet anywhere.

Agreed

I’d still like him back. I love Dixon and want to see him in a more fulfilling role, but at the same time he is new to the game. Lefty/Batch could handle the job just fine.

But for me I think in the midst of all these overpayings and big deals for lame dudes you gotta wonder how a guy like this just sits there and spins.

Bears Still Lose

When Steelers come to town this fall!!

Let's Go!

by jacksteel on Apr 3, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Harrison vs. Pace equals owie for Cutler

If Pace is healthy enough to start vs. Pittsburgh, he may feel like retiring after the game. The Bears don’t have a really tough schedule overall but they also have to play in Baltimore and get the Eagles at home. Could be some painful moments for Jay this season after getting sacked just 12 times last year. He might go down 12 times in those three games alone.

Nah

Pace is very experienced and therefore will know how to hold Harrison in the best way possible.
