"There was speculation that Russell may have done something wrong. But personnel director Kevin Colbert said Monday that the Steelers’ salary cap situation is so tight right now that someone had to be cut after backup quarterback Charlie Batch was re-signed last week."

Ha, not buying it at all. If we actually had a reliable look at the finances it would obviously clear things up, but I think they are hanging out somewhere with the compensatory picks. While GR wasn’t making the minimum salary, it was awfully close to it.

Being a salary cap casualty at 500K just seems a bit bogus to me. It’s not like the steelers didn’t know when they did their last few deals that they’d be forcing themselves to cut GR and others. If they signed Batch and Lefty then what? Cap casualty is a convenient excuse for cutting someone they didn’t want.

Ha, it’s really a waste of time for me to bother analyzing it, but I can’t help it.

They're a class organization. Whaddya expect them to say?

So if Russell messed up, you don’t really expect them to say so publicly.

But when you look at how they’ve been forced to handle recent negotiations – including Lefty – there is a salary cap issue here. How much of an issue, we can’t say.

So we can all believe what we want to believe from Colbert’s comments, and move forward to the draft. As CT says, we got a big windshield in front of us and a small rear view mirror. It’s better to pay attention to where we’re going than where we’ve been.

He would have got a huge signing bonus in cincy if he was released because of character issues.

gary russell

I’m with you steelguy. The front office just has too much class to go about bad mouthing their players and this certainly isn’t about salary cap. They must havesome room just for the draft picks and you won’t know how much you need until you see how the draft falls. More than likely it’s something more innocous like he just doesn’t fit in somehow. It could be his personality, his expectations, physical or mental skill level, depth of roster, health, work habits, family issues or likely a combination of the above.
