Andre Smith Ahead of Monroe

Actually, I have seen Andre Smith going ahead of Eugene Monroe. Of course, that was back in, say, January before Andre Smith went off the deep end.

I say the following as a fan of both the Steelers and the Gators: I want the Steelers to have nothing to do with Percy Harvin.

Percy Harvin

To be clear, my aversion to the Steelers picking him has nothing to do with the fact that he smokes weed. No, it’s because Gator receivers, by and large, stink in the NFL.

Travis Taylor
Reche Caldwell
Chad Jackson
Dallas Baker (much to my chagrin)
Taylor Jacobs
John Capel
Travis McGriff

Darrell Jackson is the only one who was a legitimate number one receiver drafted out of Florida in the past decade. Jabar Gaffney had some success with TOM FREAKING BRADY throwing to him. The jury’s still out on Andre Caldwell, who was drafted last year.

I’m not saying that Harvin can’t, like Darrell Jackson, be an exception to the rule. It’s just difficult for me to ignore this sort of history.

I'm Sure

that the University of Miami (OH) has been a regular QB University in college for turning out pro talent QBs. Point is a school is not going to consistently put out NFL stars over a long period of time. Most schools will have a couple of guys and even a school like SoCal have players that will bust or don’t live up to expectations – Reggie Bush, Mike Wiliams, Matt Lienart, for example. I’m pretty sure a high profile team such as florida gets most of their players in the draft, if only 20% of those guys turns out ok I’d say thats doing exceptionally well, its crazy to think that 50% of those guys are going to produce. For most teams you take all the guys they graduate on a football team in a position I’m sure you’ll find that the percentages just aren’t that high. Florida, Ohio State (linebackers) for example gets noticed because of their high profile and rediculous standard they are held against. So I wouldn’t judge a kid cause of his school, cause you may miss out on a Ben Rothelisberger, you just never know. Thats why you judge talent, a kids character, and how it translates into the nfl which is very difficult to do because college is so different. Sports is so far removed from reality its crazy, we say to most of these kids we want you to be the best at your profession in less than two years and sometimes one. If you’re lucky you’ll get 16 times a year to prove your the best. If not you may be released. I know that in the first 16 days of my job I’m not gonna be better than the guy who has been doing five years (well not as likely). And I’d have to do something pretty serious to get fired in that time frame. Just my opinion. Ok I’m done rambling. :)

Percy Harvin!

Do I hope that pick is wrong!

Yeah, because

  1. The Steelers would never take a talented WR who’s got character issues in the first round
  1. No way that player can be ever turn it around a be a solid contributer.

Oh wait..

I've seen him fall in mocks...

To 30 and 31. Man would I love to see this guy knocking people out in Black and Gold for the next ten years. But it will never happen.

Frantz Joseph.....

LB with FAU. Can play inside or out, good in coverage and is an absolute tackling machine! You would love seeing him knock people out in black and gold alongside Timmons on the inside, and Woodley and Harrison on the outside.

We get him in the 3rd/4th round, Timmons replaces Foote next year, Joseph backups Timmons and Farrior and eventually replaces Farrior.

He is a beast!

So, you are telling me

They knew of Santonio Holmes alleged drug use BEFORE they drafted him?

I thought he came clean about his youth during the Super Bowl, and I thought he was arrested while he was a Steeler, not a Buckeye.

Also, I seem to remember him being arrested 2x after the draft, and the Steelers (and Cowher) were not to thrilled about it.

But I guess you thought they should have kept Plaxico too…..

Oh, wait.

by imike29 on Apr 22, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Holmes did get in trouble at Ohio State

but not drugs…I think it was domestic violence or something. Plax had issues too…..and still does. I’m not saying we should take Harvin or not, but sometimes you take chances. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m sure they’ll weigh the cost. All that said….I would be surprised if they pick Harvin, but I wouldn’t be bummed out.

Santonio

Holmes was arrested twice after the draft. Once was for domestic violence, I believe the other was for disorderly conduct in Miami.

Forget all of that…… The Steelers are up against a salary cap and I do not think they will use this pick on someone that they question in any way. I think they are going to go with someone like Mack, who won academic awards, awards for his play, was a team leader, made all the OL calls and played snap after snap.

Whomever they pick, I do believe they will have to cut someone once those picks start signing. Davis, Harvin and even questions about Gilbert’s drive have to cast serious doubt the Steelers will even think of considering them in the first round.

Gary Russell

Seems he was released because of a run in with the law. Does not look good for any prospect who has questions about drug use.

So, as I said before….

PERCY HARVIN!

I did some research

because I find it funny that none of these “character issues” came up until it was time for the draft. I looked up some stuff, and found the only thing that is worth mention is his weed incident. There were no incidents at UF, and he did crazy rehab after his injury to play in the NC for UF, that shows real team mentality to me. I don’t recall him missing a bunch of games but his size maybe a problem. People seem to be taking account things he did in high school which i dont think is fair. People mature in college. I mean I feel like this “character issue” subject is a little over hyped. Something that has become a hot topic in the football world because of recent arrests. So I think he has gotten wrapped up into all that.
Here are a couple of links of sites i looked at, i dunno how credible these sites are honestly. But I found it interesting what people had to say that have been following Harvin his whole career.

Why I selected Harvin?

I choose Harvin because of his versatility and who I thought was the best value at #32. Honestly I can see the Steelers trading up and grabbing somebody they really like this year just as easy.

They have 9 draft picks and very few open depth slots, not to mention are up against the salary cap wall. So why not get quality over quantity.

Harvin would fill the KR / PR role and could develope into a solid #3 down the road once Ward moves on. Holmes, Sweed and Harvin would make a very nice trips set.

He WANTS to drop.

He did this on purpose. He knows that by having a slightly less demand he will still be in the consideration for first round and may get on a playoff team. It is all part of his plan.

First Rd. then a trade

I think we grab Mack or Beatty with first pick. Then I think we trade up, maybe give up a 4th and trade second to move up to get best d-lineman or corner. We have Casey on his last year (I have no idea about how uncapped year will work etc) and Hines. They will need a backup if they can’t sign Casey. They may try to get Brace, or the d-end from USC or even Gilbert or another offensive lineman or even I mentioned, best corner.

Or,

They grab Vontae Davis round 1 and trade up in 2 for best lineman, either offensive or defensive.

I just don’t see them sitting still with the extra picks, and the fact that we have our Numbers 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 from 2008 all coming back in and being basically non-contributors last year. Bruce Davis and Hills have not shown any juice yet, so they are question mark. Still, I see the Steelers seeing that they have those 4 plus whatever talent they can mine in this draft. We could have a lot young new faces contributing in 2009-2010. Likely a trade up in round 2. Or a trade down in Round 1 for an extra pick, either way, but I think they will trend toward trading up in round 2.

by steeelfann on Apr 23, 2009 2:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Trade Down

I could also see us trading out of the first round, as it looks like we could get many of who we would want in the 2nd, anyway. Compiling more picks would, in theory, give us more control over who we end up with. I doubt we are going to draft nine players, so we already have more picks than we need, but though it sounds counterintuitive, I think even more picks will allow us to maximize the ones we will use.

Know Your Team

Harvin could be a difference maker, but way too risky in Rd 1 … at position Steelers DON’T require. They want KR/WR type, but they KNOW they can find that guy in Rds 4/5/6 … guys like Thomas (AZ) and Williams (U-Miss) who don’t have Harvin’s hype but are the same player.

Small chance (5%) that Steelers take WR if crazy stud that they rated very high drops – maybe Britt (Rutgers).

But I’m saying it’s 95% likely they go with OL or DE … and I’m leaning towards Moala (USC) who’s the perfect player at 1/32 and best DE for their system, or Duke Robinson (OK) who’s the #1 guard.

by Watty4ever on Apr 23, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Moala...

I’ll stick up for this guy all day. My sleeper first round pick. A PERFECT 3-4 end.

Harvin

To Watty4ever:

Thomas (AZ) and Williams (U-Miss) do not even remotely compare to Harvin. Harvin is an all-around superb athlete, runner, receiver and returner. The kid benches 420# and is lights out fast with great vision. He understands how to set up defenses and follow blocks.

Now, I am NOT advocating drafting him in round 1, but you need to understand how great a player he is.
He can do it all. He really is a big play waiting to happen. I mentioned earlier that I have seen every game he has just about been in since his freshman year.

I don’ t think the Steelers need him, but someone is going to get lucky here, esp. if he falls into round 2. I just hope it is not the Brown pies or Bengals.

by steeelfann on Apr 24, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Only problem w/ Harvin ...

Most scouts agree that he can’t run a route, which might be important at the next level …

Florida WR are almost always over-hyped … last time it was Chad Jackson, the year Steelers drafted ‘Tone. Harvin isn’t as good as Desean Jackson, as return man or WR, and D-Jax slipped to the 2nd round.

I’m guessin’ that you haven’t seen Williams or Thomas play, but that’s fine … Also, I think Harvin was more effective as RB, not WR or KR, but I think we can all agree he ain’t “Steeler quality”.

by Watty4ever on Apr 24, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

For what its worth

Heres what a scouting report on harvin has to say about him

couple of key points
Character: Harvin has made a conscious effort to stay out of the spotlight at Florida. He had a series of run-ins during his high school days that had the Florida staff worrying about his character (first Virginia player banned this century from athletic competition during his prep days). He showed great maturity and solid work ethic, battling back from several injuries with only one desire – to return to the football field. GRADE: 6.2

Work Habits: Harvin proved his work ethic with his strong desire to get back on the field late last season. His right ankle sprain almost forced him to miss the BCS title game, but while his teammates went home for the Christmas break, he stayed on campus, working 15 hours a day with the trainers in a grueling rehab program. Coaches had to hide his helmet to limit him in practices leading up to the game, and despite not being fully recovered he was one of the big reasons for the team capturing the national title. Simply put, Harvin is one of those “first one to enter, last one to leave” types in the training room. GRADE: 8.0

Route Running: Harvin is an effective route runner who shows very loose lower body motion. He has the balance, body control and quickness, along with the strong and quick feet in his routes to separate out of his cuts. He needs to be a bit more focused attacking the deep third of the secondary (will sometimes drift on long patterns), but has developed crisp cut moves and refined his route running. His body control and quickness out of his breaks allows him to set up the defender, as he does a nice job of dropping his weight, sinking his hips and maintaining body control in and out of his cuts when separating. By staying at a low pad level, he is very effective at rapidly accelerating to get under the ball. GRADE: 6.7

I heard the incident with him was in high school was because a guy spit in his face and he got into it with him and the ref came behind harvin and harvin did one of those get off me moves without looking to see that it was the ref. There were no problems at Florida except for this weed thing but I don’t think its such a big deal.

Worth Ethic: you love guys that put it on the line for the team. I think he’d be great in our locker room.

Route running, he won’t be used for deep routes with us any way, that is going to be sweed and holmes job.

I say if he’s there we take him.
