The Pittsburgh Steelers select Evander "Ziggy" Hood with the 32nd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft

Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Evander "Ziggy" Hood .  Lots of quality players were available but Kevin Colbert and company felt that Ziggy was the best fit for the Steelers in their mission to repeat as NFL Champions.

I like it, I like it a lot!!!!!!!

This guy has a motor like Lamaar Woodley. Relentless, high motor. The number one defense is only going to get better!

You can delete my post if you want DYMS. I just put it up so it was there. Im not sure how I feel with Maualuga on the board, but I like him as a player.

Curious how he’ll be used. Is he going to spell Smith? Train as eventual replacement?

He’s not like Keisel, so I imagine he’s not our RE.

like the pick

i’m just happy we didn’t get unger with a first round pick. would’ve been an equally great pick if we had gotten maualuga or butler.

whose to say unger is falling to us as a 2nd round pick/

He is quick off of the snap

that’s my favorite thing about him.

Maualuga was my guy after Mack.

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

brown was a top 15 pick yet still hasn't been taken in the

2nd round. i really wish we had taken him or smith instead. disagree with the pick. BUT we have the best FO in the league and i believe in them. it also helps that i can say “Ziggy just slamed Brady down”

When we hit you, you don't get up. When you hit us, we get up laughing.

by air holmes on Apr 25, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

what the hell would we do with everrette brown?

woodley is a young stud, and we just signed harrison to a 6 year deal. would’ve been a wasted pick in my opinion.

Can’t complain. Ziggy will perform and be a long-time starter for the PS. The steelers didn’t completely boggle their fans this year. The steelers did what they do. Take the top 2 centers? Fine, dicks, thanks for Ziggy. I wonder how much of a thought Butler was.

Can’t wait for the second, wouldn’t mind a trade up.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

So far...

It doesn’t look like they have any inclination to trade up in the second. But there is still time. Who would they possibly be looking at if they do trade up? Any ideas?

opposite

now, who are we looking at in the 3rd?

by tkired on Apr 25, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think they need to trade up

i don;t think they need to trade up, they need depth mostly and they must feel they can get that talent lower in the draft where they don’t have to pay them as much, being so tight on the cap and all. I am eager to see who they pick next..CB maybe???

Compare Hood to Tyson Jackson...

Hood was drafted as a 3-4 DE, even though he was scouted and rated as a 4-3 DT in college. Compare him to Tyson Jackson who went #3 overall to K.C. as a 3-4 DE.

Hood outperformed Jackson across the board at the combine in the athletic tests. He is about the same size (1" shorter, 5 pounds heavier) and 2 years younger. His football stats also surpassed Jackson over the past couple of seasons, though neither was spectacular.

More importantly perhaps, Evander is a top student and ranks extremely high in character intangibles. That is what starts to separate the prospects once they pass the draft and enter the pro ranks. Hood seems clean living and focussed, while a lot of the first round draft picks come with lifestyle and intelligence concerns.

I think it will play out

Not too sure about this pick but I’ll trust Colbert, he has done really well on our last few #1 picks…I really hope they pick up AQ Shipley from PSU for our new center, I am interested to see the direction they take on Day 2, let’s go Steelers!!!

by BlackandGoldSSgt on Apr 25, 2009 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

more 3rd rounders equals more chances for PSU picks I hope.

Shipley or Willams. Heck even Norwood or Butler as well.

Just imagine

We have a really nasty core of LB’s, imagine if they beef up that D Line and get younger and faster, rotating them in and out…

by BlackandGoldSSgt on Apr 25, 2009 11:02 PM EDT reply actions

Thank you robert ethan

Bang on! This is a great pick. All week I’ve been saying Fili Moala (USC) b/c I thought NO WAY Hood is on the board at #32 …. Jackson & Hood are very similar, but Hood has been compared to Aaron Smith (non stop motor) … He’ll rotate into either End spot every 3 or 4 snaps, and if that extends Smith’s career for 1 season and he’s 2/3 the player that Smith has been …. CHA CHING! Steelers strike gold again.

by Watty4ever on Apr 25, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

The only other DT who really fit the profile of a 3-4 DE taken in the first round was Peria Jerry. But as was the case with Jackson, Hood’s numbers were better across the board than Jerry’s, both on and off the field of play. Plus Jerry is nearly 3 years older than Hood.

I think that the team probably thought that Hood as a defensive lineman with size, speed, and smarts, was a rarer commodity than the offensive linemen available at that point, or the defensive backs, or receivers, or whatever. With 3 third round picks, they get a chance to get lucky at one of the other positions of need.
