2009 NFL Draft Open Thread - Round 2

The Steelers have selected a defenisve player with their first selection and lots of strong players are still on the board early in the second round.  Players like Ray Maulaluga and Darius Butler have fallen beyond where they were projected.  Could this mean that the Steelers would look to trade up and snag one of these guys that are taking a dive?

Trade up, yes...

But not to pick up droppers. I say stick with need and go OL, now that DL depth has been addressed (out of turn IMO).

hey guys...

back to aq shippley… i think he gets knocked for the short arms…but centers don’t need to block in space, so long arms aren’t needed as much…he drives his feet well, and is very intelligent and is a leader…i don’t think a third round pick would be a waste here…

Hood

I agree, especially if Lebeau likes him. He’ll be a big DE in rotation. I don’t think he can put on the necessary sand in the cargo hold to be a starter at NT to take over Hampton

character issues.

The Bengals couldn’t resist taking someone with such high off-the-field potential.

Bengals got Rivers and Maualuga now

The 2 USC LB. Pretty solid group. Wonder if Ward will break his jaw?

Not too impressed

Eben Britton and Max Unger were still available, wish they had gone that route, did they take Hood because Alex Mack went early ? I hope they don’t think the O line doesn’t need help!

I may be pleasantly surprised

yeah I was thinking they may be targeting AQ Shipley (Center) from Penn State later on , I guess that’s why Coach Mike and Colbert know more than I do, I may be surprised:)

It’s not as if there is zero need at DE. We need help elsewhere, but reaching is never a good idea.

How the hell the Patriots do this? The swindle teams with 6th and 7th round picks for 2nd rounders. How the hell? I hope we trade up if we value a player, if not, then lets just hang out where we are and get BPA.

If he makes it

I would take him. That or Jarron Gilbert. I know it is two DE’s, but that would be a good move for us. I would rather see us trade up, but I dont even know who we should trade up to take now.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Apr 25, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah its a strange situation

i feel like if we stay put we can get great value at a position of need, but i also want to make use of those later round picks to trade. maybe we should wait til the third to start trading up?

by tdp992 on Apr 25, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Ziggy Hood - I don't know?

This was a big shock. I thought for sure they would go CB Darius Bulter or OT Eben Britton. What do you guys think about this pick? I can see him having value on 3rd downs rushing the passer, but he doesn’t look like a 5-technique DE to me that can play the run. Oh well.

By the way, I’d still trade up to take Jarron Gilbert. Just do the same thing you did with the Timmons/Woodley draft two years ago.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Apr 25, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear the Steelers like his athleticism

4th in bench press, 2nd in 40 at the combine. If Mitchell can turn late rounders into starters, he can teach this guy the technique to stop the run, right? Since it’s technique more than strength that’s stopping him?

That’s the theory at least.

He’s got position versatility, can play the 5 technique and the 3 technique on passing downs. He doesn’t have the length that we usually look for in DE’s.

Call me cautiously optimistic… what makes me positive is the intangibles: supposedly he has a great motor, effort on the field and in the weight room, and highly coachable.

But hell… we’ll see!

by syrsteelerfan on Apr 25, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t even come close to imagining the steelers drafting a dud at DL in the 1st round. I’ll trust Colbert and our D coaches on this one.

not going O-line yet

Although the O-line is much maligned the whole group (except Hartwig who is 30) is under 30 and most have been re-upped this off-season. So they may just have to become the worst O-line to win back2 back Super Bowls – in the meantime they may go D-Line again as they like Fili Moala from USC and he is still out there. Shipley is around in the 3rd round at least, likely later, and they may get a future prospect like Hills last year later too
(sorry about the baseball motif I joined a bluejays SB blog first and have read this site for awhile too and wanted to get in on the action today, I’m one of many Steeler fans in the great white north)

Good point

Not sure who would pursue him actively though?

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

Now here's a question

Does Ziggy win the job in pre season? Keisel is good but if Ziggy is anywhere near his potential, he should see significant playing time.

i say this

for most every rookie we pick up, but not at beginning of the season. Look for him to be worked in more as season goes on though. Question to me is if he is starter by season’s end (as in the SB)

by tkired on Apr 25, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt he wins it. Everyone talks about how long it takes to learn the 1 gap 5 techs we use. He’ll be in the rotation and eventually get more PT

next highest prospect

DJ Moore a junior cirner from Vanderbilt is next highest rated from Scout.com still on the board, he’s rated #43 and here’s what they say about him: Moore is an explosive cover corner with shut down ability. He plays the run effectively, and despite his size, he’s deceptively strong. He has great instincts, possesses outstanding ball skills and can instantly turn defense into offense. He transitions well with receivers and gets vertical adjusting to defend deep passes. He’s also a dynamic return specialist.
Doesn’t sound like a bad fit but can’t say I heard much about him before reading this.

before today, today, tomorrow and beyond

Re-signing some o-lineman with rings, extending Silverback, restructuring Ike, adding depth like Ratlief and the CFL return guy Logan, extending Hines and adding a young 1st round d-lineman are not a bad start to repeating. And tomorrow gives the FO a chance to add some o-line depth, a wideout to push Sweed and Nance and company, a blocking TE perhaps, maybe even a FB/short yardage type (are you listening Arians?) But overall the off-season as a whole is going pretty well for a team with no glaring weaknesses. Re-signing a bunch of our own people (just get Heath done yet please) isn’t sexy but in the Steelers world it’s what works.

Great move to trade down

Quality is there in Rd 3 – I’ve been saying they want multiples in #2 or #3 to take advantage of the depth. Might also dump a 7th and 5th to move back into the 4th.

Gilbert at DE.
OL – Duke Robinson, Meredith, Johnson, Vasquez (maybe reach in 3, but he’s mean and talented) …

Mickens at CB would be great too.

by Watty4ever on Apr 25, 2009 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Here we go Steelers ...

Boys are gonna light up the 3rd …

tmrw they might use one their 7th rd picks and low 3rd (#96) to move up to top of 3rd to get the guy they want ….

Right now they’re at 79, 84 and 96, which might also be just fine ! See y’all tmrw.

by Watty4ever on Apr 25, 2009 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

15 picks

before ours in the 3rd round. Watty, all you peeps could be gone by then. I think we should have grabbed the best OL avail, but apparently the FO wasn’t all that impressed by those that were on the board at 2.32, if we traded.
