With the 226th Pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers Select A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State
In what is sure to be an incredibly popular pick here on BTSC, local standout A.Q. Shipley, is selected as the 226th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shipley is a little undersized and is considered to be a great fit for a zone blocking scheme but could struggle with some of the larger nose tackles in the AFC North. A great point brought out on BTSC's twitter feed is the 7th round selection that we used to draft A.Q. Shipley was acquired from the Tampa Bay Bucaneers for Sean Mahan. So in essence we traded Sean Mahan for A.Q. Shipley, and I think just about any Steeler fan will recognize their is a lot of value in that deal.
Shipley was very accomplished at Penn State and even won the 2008 Rimington Trophy for the best center in college football, as well as being named to ESPN's All-Bowl team, and was named to All-Big Ten Conference first-team.

Oh, and before I forget, he does look like a cabbage patch doll.

How can you not like a guy named Alejandro Quintaplous Shipley?

...maybe not the most talented pick..
…but easily the most popular….:)

Steelers fans love local boys, no doubt about it.
If a sesame street character could play OL he’d be heralded as a hero.

I'd trade two 1st rounders and a can of salt and vinegar pringles for Snuffleumpokis
"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"
at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

Great pickup in 7a, major fumble in 7b
I’m glad they picked Shipley, who represents a great late round acquisition. On the other hand, what were they possibly thinking with their last pick? They grabbed a tight end they easily could have had as a F/A while OT Gerald Cadogan (who some scouting services had scored as the eleventh rated tackle with lots of upside – predicted as a 2nd or 3rd rounder) was still on the board. Was I missing something?

Probably missing that the steelers didn’t like Cadogan very much.
No one is exactly a reliable drafter in round 7 anyhow. Also, as of this moment, Cadogan is still on the board. Other teams are not exactly falling over themselves to draft him.

Yeah, I was surprised he didn’t get drafted, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we picked him up as an UDFA, since we’re close, need tackles, and drafted Shipley.

that would probably allay my only qualm about this draft.

and lol, “major fumble”? It’s the fricking 226th pick. It’s not like anyone we pick had a great chance to stick.

how come the best center in football is picked in the 7th round behind
guys like Mack, Wood, and Unger?
When we hit you, you don't get up. When you hit us, we get up laughing.

Yep, I definitely missed that point!
No doubt about it, or they would have picked him. After all, what’s the point of having a scrambler if you don’t make him run for his life. The guard and center are good acquisitions. But over half of Ben’s sacks come off the corners. If not Cardogan, any decent tackle would have been a ungrade to our current “look out” twins.

yeah, I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get one of the many “upside” guys.

It’s pointless to have a tackle on the roster that you don’t think will ever make it in the NFL (like colon). If the steelers graded the top 8 tackles as NFL worthy and the rest as trash, it would be pretty pointless to draft trash, don’t you think?

Shipley ripped off a 40 on his Wonderlic...
…been many a year since anyone the Steeler’s drafted managed that. Urbik had a 31, which isn’t too shabby, either. Hood, 21, the rest in the teens, except Summers who wasn’t invited to the Combine.

What our O-Line seems to lack
is an attitude. Hopefully Shipley will install a little of that. I’m not talking about the dumb penalty type attitude that Chris K. has but the whistle to whistle never stop attitude that Shipley seems to epitomize.
overall I like this draft. We’ll probably grade out as a C+ or B- because there aren’t any real flashy guys (except maybe Wallace as a KR). But several of these guys have the potential for some real longevity. When we look back we’ll have some significant role players with lots of character and smarts.
by Steev1705 on Apr 26, 2009 9:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i think we'll grade out much higher than that
I bet most people give us high Bs or low As. Hood and Wallace + solid Wisconsin OL product + intriguing player in Tank Summers to fill our ‘smashmouth’ style of play. People are going to like this draft for us. Rightfully so.

...missed that point
On the other hand…I didn’t just coach (and manage) the Super Bowl winner. So I admit I might be overreacting:<)
But then, on the ‘other’ other hand, is any pick truly unimportant? If that were so, free agent acquisitions would be totally worthless…such as FW Parker and James Harrison. Nontheless, this draft looks pretty decent. We should have good contributors to both lines, and at least one addition to the secondary and return game. If Frank the Tank pans out, we could have a monster short yardage back who can break for distance…and good hands (reportedly) too. In addition to his return skills, Wallace appears to be a home run threat who can stretch the defense and keep it honest. Mike Thomas reportedly offered a polished receiver who run sharp routes – but perhaps the Steelers feel that Wallace can learn those skills, whereas his speed is unique. At any rate, they saw the comparative films and had their choice of the two, so they must had their reasons.
Is it time for training camp yet.

very good draft
Shipley will probably stick and reprise the role of Mike Webster. Despite all the naysayers, I’m with Ben – the OL is under-rated. Most important, they’re young and just got younger, so they have room (lots of room, ha ha) to improve. But the interior line could be tough as nails with Kemo, Shipley and Urbik (and Stapleton as key backup) … Colon is also nasty (and young) and Starks is “decent” …
My guess is that our boys didn’t like the T’s that were on the board and will draft T early next year if they have to ….
And Mike Wallace is a great pick – probably better than the clown that Raidas took at #7. Love it.
by Watty4ever on Apr 26, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I like the idea
of Stapleton as our key backup because he can play center or guard. I especially like the fact that the guy behind him, Legursky, can do the same thing. Actually AQ has the same stubby arms and crazy strength as Legursky.
And your right Colon is “nasty” but I mean it literally. Maybe we can find a huge, slow, blocking tight end as a UDFA. and do the whole Jason Peters thing…. well I can dream.
it never got weird enough for me

I Like Shipley
But, as the post says, I don’t know if he can handle the NTs in the AFC North. His only hope is the practice squad this year.
by PaulMorel on Apr 26, 2009 11:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He can though
Thats really an overrated statement anymore.
B-whore has a great NT.
Cincy has a terrible overrated fat out of shape NT
Browns have a lazy ass cheap shotting NT.
Basically we got 2 games a year against tough NT’s minimum. We just game plan and give him help and for the love of god not plunge FWP inside every down like we always do against baltimore.
Shipley could totally take care of business if we make him train with Silverback. I mean Deebo aint super tall and he actually placed the moon in orbit, so we should be good.

I don’t know either, but I do know he can make this team as a backup. Right now we have trai essex, Hills, and legursky as backup talent, how does that sound?

Value pick
Great, great value pick, a quality center in the 7th round. Played against some quality Dlinemen from USC, OSU and practicing against some good guys at Penn State should’ve got him more ready then some other guy. The obvious negative is his size, but hopefully he could use his leverage like Casey uses on D
