Tomlinball?
Looking at this draft we got two D-lineman that are 4-3 DT we will convert to 3-4 ends and a Tampa cover-2 style CB.
We didn't invest in the O-line much but did grab a speedy WR and a H-back.
Considering Timmons would ba a natural 4-3 OLB, Gay would fit nicely in tampa-2, and we are getting rid of blocking fullbacks for pass catching H-backs I think it is time to consider that Tomlin is slowly morphing this team toward his style.
The draft we made is not a pound the ball and throw deep draft, it looks more like a West-Coast Hybrid draft. Also the defense is slowly gaining the ability to also Hybrid itself.
We aren't the same team we used to be. But then we didn't run well last year and we played more deep safeties (and will need to do so again). We are a QB driven team with a flexible defense, and we just won the Super Bowl.
Then again, we drafted a mauler at Gaurd and the Tank (maybe an Alstott role?) so maybe I'm full of crap. What do you think?

You can see Tomlin bracing, if not preparing, for a change to the 4-3. Of course, this will have a lot to do with LeBeau: Tomlin is too smart to ask LeBeau to change to a 4-3 defense. However, they’ve drafted some players that might fit Tomlin’s scheme better. It looks like when LeBeau leaves, we will see a lot more of the 4-3.

Knowing how honest Tomlin has been so far; I don’t think he is intentionally trying to morph us into anything. I think Tomlin has been looking for football players, not physical specimens. which to me could be part of the reason why we now have a bunch of players on the roster who provide us position flexibility in case we decide to move to a different defense.

Look at the players we will be losing soon, the whole D-line and Farrior. You remove them right now and we have a 4-3 capable LB core.
We would need Ends. Which is why I think Tomlin and LeBeau are working toward a Hybrid.
We will face NE with Brady this year. We used cover 2 against Arizona because we had to. I think a hybrid, flexible defense is what we need to handle all the different offenses the league is developing.
I don’t think a straight up switch is coming, but I think the defense is evolving into a Cowher/Tomlin Hybrid, capable of defending varieties of run, as well as covering or blitzing the pass. That’s why we are drafting smart players who work hard over talent.

agreed,
that was kind of my point, although I couldn’t get it out as well as you did.
We have already played a little bit of a hybrid here and there and used some interesting personnel sets since Tomlin has come aboard.
Although we won’t play NE this season, unless we meet in the playoffs. (I am not convinced they win that division this year).

Cover two is not Tampa 2 specific
Cover two has been used by Lebeau’s Defense’s for decades. Cover two just means assistance over the top on Man coverage. FYI, we use full cover four out of the 3/4 as well. Farrior just signed an extention, so he is not on the way out. I honestly don’t see the Steelers changing at all. Look at video of our “zone” corner we drafted. Lewis is a Man corner. And I think the line will continue to get address in the next couple of years, but Urbik is a mauler who will upgrade our pass and run offense.
I think
whatever the hell it is lets keep doing it! I love the 3-4 but the original curtain was a 4-3 and Dungy always says that the “Tampa 2” should be the “Noll 2”.
That said I doubt Tomlin would ever undermine Lebeau, nor would he change everything when he leaves. Tomlins preference to the cover 2 comes from where he learned it from and he seems like the type of guy who would take Lebeau very seriously and learn from him as well. When all us said and done our grandbabies will be talking about how Tomlin invented this amazing scheme and the steelers won 10 superbowls in a row:)
it never got weird enough for me
10 superbowls in a row?
you’re full of Sh*t. It’s gonna be 12 in a row ;)

my 2 cents
I think Tomlin will not change something that works. He had one of the best defenses in recent history last year, a very good defense the year before that and likely a very good defense this year. Tomlin doesn’t give a crap what formations he runs if they are effective. Chances are if (not when) Lebeau retires we’ll hire from within and that consistency would keep us in a 3-4. But who knows?

to me, Tomlin is the ultimate “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of coach. Our defense is currently our strength, and Ziggy and Sonny can both play end in a 3-4 system.
Why should I change my name? He's the one that sucks!

Hire from within...
Keith Butler, the LB Coach turned down an interview with Steelers West in what likely would have been a guarenteed DCoord job under Whiz and turned downthe interview after “thinking about it” for a couple days. Meet the DC after Lebeau.
You noticed too?
I thought the move by Butler was a crystal clear indication that once LeBeau decided to hang-‘em up, that the job was Butler’s. No sense in changing a defense that keeps revolutionizing the game. The only question will be, is if Butler will be able to keep creating new schemes and staying ahead of the curve like LeBeau.
+1
The Steel Curtain was a 4-3 — but the NFL was much different in those days. For one thing, the “Mel Blount” rule changed the ability of receivers to get open, and makes the corners much more vulnerable.
The 3-4 is a faster defense, and allows the Steelers to attack the QB, keeping the CBs from being isolated for so long. The difference between the Steelers 3-4 and others is that they also do a great job of clogging up the gaps so it also has the effect of stopping the run.
Add to this the fact that the Steelers have always had an uncanny knack for picking/grooming/magically finding linebackers, and I cannot see the Steelers moving away from the 3-4. Not while Dick Lebeau is here, certainly.
Remember what Tomlin said: “Steeler football is about winning.”
He’s not throwing away a defense that just won the Super Bowl. Not now, and not in the near future.

Totally agree with ya, the Blitzburgh 3-4 is our identity, and i love the fact we play it. I dont see it changing anytime soon, and before LeBeau goes, im pretty sure hell mentor a young defensive assistant to keep it going

We’re not switching to a 4-3. Our position coaches and DC have been doing the 3-4 for years and they’re damn good at it. In our front 7, we have 4 Pro-Bowlers and 1 more on the way who have only been successful in the 3-4, which means there’s a ton of risk with a shift. Where’s the benefit from taking a risky move? Becoming a better #1 defense? It just wouldn’t make sense to switch personnel and coaches to appease the HC’s fancy. That’s not how the Steelers operate, and from everything I’ve seen from Tomlin, that’s not how he operates.
That said, there is some truth in there. The game is more pass oriented than ever, which is a big reason we just signed and drafted 3 CB’s. That’s also why Tomlin has been suiting his defense to play the pass more during his first 2 years here and will continue in the future. We’re seeing a lot more 2 deep coverages, which protect the CB’s more than the Cover-3 defenses we played under Cowher. There’s no need to switch to the 4-3 because a good pass defense does 2 main things: 1) prevent the deep play and 2) get to the QB. We’re already doing both of those (and will for the forseeable future) so we don’t need changes.
Furthermore, we drafted 2 DT’s who fit the mold of 3-4 DE’s in our system. Our DE’s only play one gap, so they tend to penetrate more than New England’s and be a little smaller and quicker. If you’re confused about the one gap thing, look at this article. He mostly knows what he’s talking about. Both Hood and Harris have the potential to be playmakers on the line and still drop back in coverage on occasion.
While we can’t be completely sure what the coaches are going to do, these picks tell me we’re sticking with the 3-4 and these are two of the guys we’re going build the line around. We still haven’t found Hampton’s replacement, but we have some time to do so, and it’s become more apparent over the past few years that he’s not quite as important to our defense as some would lead you to believe. Tomlin has said he’s sticking with the 3-4 since day one, and I still don’t see any reason to think he’s going to change that stance.

Great link on the gap systems. I do not think we will switch to a 4-3 with our current front 7. However our D-Line is old and will be completely new before long.
It seems to me our new D-linemen (albeit 2) are suited for either system. Of course I think we have been a hybrid for quite a while on the D-line by using rush end linebackers that make us look more like a 4-3.
Tomlin’s Cover 2 relies on faster LB’s to cover space underneath the safeties. With Woodley Timmons and Harrison I could see that problem solved. Hood could play DT in a Dungy 4-3 so it looks like Tomlin is getting players who could do both. We’ll have to watch who else we bring in on the D-line.
With a young talented DC from Dungy’s Defense and a crafty brilliant Dick Lebeau under the same roof I think we might be witnessing something special. A new style of hybrid between LeBeau’s 3-4 and Dungy’s 4-3. Two of the best D’s out there.

No Panic Here Either
I’m not quite sure why the change from a 3-4 to a 4-3 or whatever is still such a hot topic. Good post! You understand the game and the Steelers very well. Very well said!

I guess it could be
but not this season. Probably not even the season after. The big thing we would need to switch over to a cover 2 is fast as hell, top-end DE’s, so we can kep LB’s in zones more. and who wants to see Harrison and Woodley in zones mostly, instead of constantly attacking the line of scrimmage?
when we have 3 or more DE’s who can generate a pass rush, basically on their own, i doubt that pitt will be a primarily cover 2 team.
I think everyone's correct in a way
What Tomlin seems to be doing is getting multiple players who can do multiple things. I don’t think he wants to be handcuffed by scheme. He’s stacking this roster with “football players” and may the best man win. He wants a team “on the grass” that can handle any situation regardless of the offensive or defensive scheme. He wants people on the sidelines that will step up when the moment presents itself and not miss a beat. The genius is that everyone is going to have to compete for a job no matter who it is, some exceptions obviously. We saw this last year. Think about some of the injuries we overcame and some of the in-game crap we overcame to get the W. It was amazing.
I’m looking at this roster top to bottom plus the guys we just added and its pretty deep at every position, even long snapper. I can’t wait to see the UDRFA’s, I’ll bet there’s a playa or two. I’m pumped. I can’t wait until camp comes with some of these position battles. Take RB for instance. Do you think this guy “the tank” is going to bow down to anyone? Mendy, FWP and Mo better be ready. This guy runs, blocks, & can catch. I think some of these dudes on the OL better watch out too with Urbik and AQ because i can garauntee they’re both coming to play. May not happen right away but those big bozos aren’t just gonna ease into the starting role. Snack better get his big fat ass in shape, because this kid Ziggy is gonna bring it even if he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. I could be completely wrong about who’s gonna be good from this draft, but one thing is for sure, Tomlin believes these guys will come in and push for playing time. And that makes everyone great.
Best and last thing. Some of our best players are in a contract year. Do you think some of them are gonna show up and kick some ass? Yesssss. Stairway to Seven!

Tomlin Quotes
“Everyday I walk past five (now six) Lombardy trophies not five rushing titles.”
IMO the organization has decided to build as balanced team as possible. Balanced teams in the NFL are always near the top. The last thing that brings them to that championship level is mental as in preparation or football smarts and emotion as in love to play and talways team first.
IMO that’s why Tomlin always refers to his men and draftees as great character guys.
my point in action!
Article from the TRIB, cut and pasted some qoutes. “Unrestricted free agent Ashley Lelie, among the top deep receiving threats in the NFL, met with Steelers officials Monday and could sign with the team, agent Peter Schaffer said.” …. wtf?
Not sure if this will happen but from the sound of it, both sides are interested.
“It was a very productive day for Ashley,” Schaffer said. “The Steelers, I think, came away with the same opinion, and we’re going to keep an open line of communication.”
If this happens we will be absolutely loaded at WR going into camp. I guess my initial concern would be Lelie takes a roster spot from a promising young talent. He was pretty productive at Denver, but that was 4 years ago. Tomlin throwing shit up on the wall and seeing what sticks i guess.
Sweed, Holmes, Lelie and “The Anchorman” Mike Wallace would be a lot of deep threats. setting up the run with the pass? Or maybe we’ll go Pats and throw the ball every down (joking).
That is an interesting possibility. Just doesn’t seem like a Steelers thing to get our hopes up on a Free Agent signing and then actually sign them.

Interesting poast
I have to say personally I think Tomlin wants to put his mark on our team, but still keep it functional. You dont wanna shake the chicken in the box if its laying eggs just fine.
I think the Frank Summers pick however DOES provide us a pound the ball option should we try to use it. I think FWP, MM, RM, and FS could very well be the best backfield in the whole wide league.
If you shake a chicken in a box
and it’s not laying eggs….will it start the chicken up? just curious.

It might
Or it just may traumatize the chicken further resulting in a big bird poop of 0-16.
Betcha never heard that one before lol

you have proved your worth as a poster on this blog simply by making me laugh my butt off. Hilarious.
"Whaddya' mean all the beer is gone..?
Tomlin has no need to put his mark on the team
His mark is the Lombardi Trophy in the case. Also, he knows that he is going to be the Steelers coach for 10-15 years because getting the Steelers head coaching job is like getting chosen for the Supreme Court(your there till you resign or die). So invariably this frees Tomlin from the constant worry that many other coaches have(especially in Oakland), and allows him to focus on fine-tuning the system that is in place. I don’t think he is trying to change anything. What I will subscribe to is the idea that he wants versatile, knowledgeable, athletic players that can adapt to any crazy new schemes that LeBeau and Tomlin can dream up. Same goes on offense.
I agree, and most 3-4 defenses are a Hybrid, and we use rush ends that give a more 4-3 look already. The differences I see (especially w/ Foote gone now) are the type of players we are getting. The Hit man Holmes or L. Kirkland would not fit what we are doing now, and I think there is more to come.
The big thing to me is the offense, our roster is more and more looking like a T. Dungy Tampa West-Coast adaptation. That’s a long way to say if you look at what Tampa won the Super Bowl with, our offensive roster is looking more and more like that.
by Phantaskippy on Apr 28, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Offense? Maybe. Defense? Not likely.
I seriously doubt Tomlin is preparing to shift the defense in any direction.
Bolstering the hybrid is about the most serious option I would take from this. Snack is getting older and you don’t find many guys like him waiting to be drafted. There will be games when our defenders are on their heels and they’re on the field much longer than we’d like. During those games, guys like Big Snack will need to warm some pine and recoup. The hybrid gives us more options and we could get an extra season out of Snack.
I don’t see this being a problem for LeBeau. He likes complicating the D and making it difficult for others to plan for us. I doubt giving him more options is something he’ll squawk about. Plus, adding some 4-3 to the repertoire gives us some insurance in the event that Snack or Aa Smith goes down.
It does make for an intriguing “what if?” discussion, though. The only question is whether or not we have the personnel to accomplish it. I think we have some of the necessary pieces. Mostly, I’m thinking we have guys who offer flexibility: Woodley, Timmons, Aa Smith, and Polamalu immediately come to mind. Some of our new additions (Ziggy most notably) can fill 4-3 slots, but we’re weakest on the line itself. I don’t see Diesel, Big Snack, Kirschke, or Hoke playing a game where we depend on them to apply the bulk of the pressure.
I dont see us switching either
Agreed on your point about big snack. In fact he probably needs to play a little less over time. I’d like the idea of keeping him fresh by rotating him out perhaps for our new draft pick or even just Hokey.
