Around SBN: Which Players Will Join The 3,000-Hit Club?

Which Undrafted Fa will have a legit Shot.

Below are the Players tht the Steelers will bring into camp.

The steelers have usually find at  least one player that makes the Roster if not a starter.. Looking over this list early it seems like that will be tough this season but My early Choices are ILB Andrew Schantz who played at Portland State and was the Team Leading Tackler. The Other Is FS Derrick Richardson from New Mex ST where he lead the team in tackles. these are the 2 positions where i can see an UDFA making the roster.

Mark Estermeyer, LS, 6-1, 251, Pitt

As far as I can see. That is about the sorriest group of pretenders that I can recall the team bringing in as camp fodder.

No way man, Estermeyer has a serious shot to beat out Warren.

…but will anyone notice if he does?

Well, at least now...

…they have a QB from the U of California in Pittsburgh, to go with an OT who was born in Pittsburg, California. That will likely go down as the most memorable aspect of Kevin McCabe and Ra’Shon Harris’s career as Steelers.

…oops, “DT born in Pittsburg, California”….if that really matters.

Mike Reilly, QB, 6-3, 214, Central Washington State

Guy has been talked about a lot as the biggest sleeper in this draft and even has drawn comparisons to Tom Brady, who was a 6th round pick.

I don’t expect anyone measuring up to Brady any time son, buy Rielly seems to have a legit shot at making the team.

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

Some good prospects there

QB Reilly, ILBs Korte and Schantz, LS Estermayer , OT Foster, DT McLendon and RB Redman all have a chance to make the practice roster this year and based on Steeler history at least one of them will make the 53-man roster. Estermayer was invited to the Senior Bowl and was considered one of the top 3 long-snappers in college. Reilly is an accurate and fairly strong passer with some elusiveness in the pocket and excellent fundamentals. He broke most if not all of Jon Kitna’s school records. He could be kept around as the prospective No. 3 QB in 2010. Korte and Schantz are the top new prospects at a position that just lost a starter in Foote and will get a long look for special teams, which is how undrafted Donovan Woods and Patrick Bailey made the team last year. Korte is a tough, smart and reasonably athletic kid who will impress the coaches by doing everything asked of him fairly well. Schantz was coached by Jerry Glanville in a 3-4 defense at Portland State and had other teams interested in signing him. Foster was invited to the Senior Bowl, where he did not impress very many people, but he is huge and the only OT the Steelers signed from this draft year, so he will get a good look to see if he might develop at OT or guard. Redman was an excellent small-school back with shiftiness, balance and strength at 228 pounds. McClendon comes from an excellent program at Troy, started just his senior year after suffering injuries but is athletic at nearly 6-2 and 305 pounds and might have a chance to put on weight and learn NT. He originally agreed to an offer from the Eagles but the Steelers were interested enough to give him a better offer. Demiko (doesn’t go by Cedric) Goodman will get everyone’s attention at camp as a former 400-meter track star with great downfield speed but he never really developed at Georgia after being a highly-touted recruit. The Steelers are probably a detour on his way to the CFL but he is going to blow by some people at camp. Grisham is a tough and smart little receiver who probably just isn’t quick enough but he will catch almost everything thrown to him. None of the Steelers’ current backups are that kind of good underneath receiver and Grisham has a bit of Wes Welker in him, although not quite as sturdy. He has about the same measurables as Welker did coming out of college, and had 60 receptions as a Junior. Almost all of these guys will get cut as part of the process but it doesn’t end there. Four or five will be added to the practice roster and Estermayer in particular has a chance to make the team. Korte could be a real surprise.

by steeler.lifer on Apr 29, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think the tough part this year is roster spots. As you say, a lot of these guys could stick around and potentially become contributors, but for actually making the active roster I don’t think anyone but Estermayer has a real shot.

The steelers did very well filling up their depth chart last year with STers. Guys will obviously have a chance to beat out Bailey, Woods, Madison, etc., but the STers last year were pretty damn good, and I believe some of them have a chance to play in the base D at some point. The easiest way for UDFAs to make the roster is on ST performance, but beating out last years crop is going to be tough for them.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

Another to add to the list: Cyrus Mulitalo

Cyrus Mulitalo`was an exceptional inside linebacker for small school Sacramento State.

Did he get signed?

I brought his name up a while ago as a small school prospect. I’d be happy to see what he’s got.

My F/A predictions (based on my tarot cards:<)

QB Mike Reilly (earns practice squad, would make 53 man roster except for Dixon and Batch

OT Ramon Foster: a big body for the practice squad

Plus at least one new linebacker. Depending on what the staff sees in these guys, they might want to watch them develop for a year (on the practice squad) before cutting them for good. I think there’s a NFL limit to the number of years a player can be kept on the practice squad. If so, there might be some turnover out of necessity.

I think Isaac Redman could be really talented. But it’s hard to judge him based on his competition. Plus he doesn’t appear to have RB speed for the NFL. Likewise, Mulitalo, Korte, and Schwartz could be monsters in football pads, or they might look like they stepped in front of a semi under NFL ‘full live contact’ conditions.

Reilly

could be a great sleeper…can make the throws, has mobility, is competitive, and is considered a leader…we’ll see….

17%?

Not even going to try that math, I’ve got the faith in Arn’s.

I’m not going to claim to be an expert on long snapping, I’ve only tried to do it like a handful of times and have never hit my target. But the undrafted rook comes from a long snapper family, if he’s got the nerves and ability… cut Warren. It might not save that much cap room, but it must save some, and I think the FO should be looking to clear as much cap as possible right now. Even if its only like 100 to 200 g’s.

I mean, when has not having a back up long snapper ever cost us a game… oh that’s right, nevermind.

I love the idea of a “long snapper family”.

My two thoughts

Personally UDFAs never totally stand out.

But anybody at WR has a shot to get in at #5.

by Mechem on Apr 30, 2009 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

really?

I think WR, is one of the toughest positions to crack on the Steelers squad this year. Hines & Santonio are proven vets, so you are down to three spots.

Out of those three Limas Sweed is safe, no way the Steelers release him in year two as a second round draft pick, just not gonna happen. Then with the signin of Shaun McDonald I find it hard to believe he doesn’t make one of those other roster spots.

Then you have Martin Nance, Dallas Baker, and Mike Wallace all in the mix for one additional spot.

Seems like slim pickins for a UDFA wideout to me.

by Frank Mineo (DYMS) on Apr 30, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed, and you almost have to give a spot to Mike Wallace because as a 3rd rounder he’s going elsewhere. Not to mention the nice thing about Wallace is he will likely make the team based on KR. I’d love for Sweed to show enough that our top 4 is Holmes,Ward,McD,Sweed.

Wallace is active to do KR and can step in at #3 if we need to stretch the field. Of course, he’ll need to be able to beat press coverage which may be a bit tricky in year 1, but we’ll see.

Nance and Baker are all but gone, let alone any UDFAs.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on Apr 30, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

Wallace would have to put out a really, really poor performance to not get a spot being as he is a third rounder. Especially this season when we had no second rounders and got two additional third rounders. With him being one of those.

I'll drink your Milkshake, I'll drink it up!

Someone could get an "injury"

The best way to keep a highly-drafted rookie who just isn’t ready is for him to get “injured” … ie, not really hurt but kept around without having to be cut. If Wallace coughs up a few kickoff returns in preseason he might suddenly develop a quad strain or groin pull. The other thing is special teams. Guys like Sean Morey and Kelley Washington have made a good living as WRs who never have to play WR because they are great on kick coverage. If a Tyler Grisham or Martin Nance can down a punt inside the five or make a tackle, he will be in the mix.

Changed after McDonald

I posted this before I saw mcDonalds got signed. I kinda like him. He had a solid year with a garbage team. He can do better here.

So Yeah I’d say now these poor guys are gonna have a tough go at it.

Ramon Foster

Kid has potential at T and he’s a big body … with just Essex and Hills between him and roster spot.

Estermeyer and Schantz

by jonesjeffum on Apr 30, 2009 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

ILBs have a shot

If they carry extra OL guys Foster has a very good shot at making it. Estermyer obviously a LS always has a shot. For me it’s the ILBs that have the best shot. When Foote is gone our depth at ILB is non existent, all our other guys are really Special teamers (Fox and Bailey should make the team just as ST guys though) so yeah I think we’ve picked up a couple of guys in Schantz and Korte if they play well there is a shot for one of them to make the team and be the primary backup at ILB too.

Redman might be a sleeper

Have you seen the highlight films of Isaac Redman from Bowie State? He’s an unbelievably tough and elusive runner. At 230 lbs., he has the size for the NFL. If Redman performs in the pros nearly like he did in college, he might be the biggest steal since Willie Parker.

I was very impreesed with Redman Video but ok course it was against a lower class of Competition but hey you never Know.
