Smith vs. Smith
Now in my mock draft a while back I had the Steelers taking Alphonso Smith in the 2nd round, but looking at some of ESPNs mocks along with other sites he'd be more likely at #32. He in my opinion is very talented and I'd really like him in black and gold. But, what if we could get a guy that could play CB and a safety? Sean Smith from Utah is solid at both positions. Now, I really like it when Ryan Clark knocks the lights out of someone (Wes Welker, to be exact), but he has been getting injured and in the final year of his contract. Smith and Smith are talented, but who do we pick. A. Smith is more talented at CB, but S. Smith can play CB and S. If we took A. Smith we might try working him into a S position, too.

As a Hokie fan
Sean Smith is similar to Jimmy Williams, I think, who the Falcons drafted in the second round a couple of years ago (when they basically brought in every Hokie they could). I’ve seen mocks where he falls as low as third round, and others where he’s a first round pick. Tought to say which will be better. I tend to lean towards Alphoso. I doubt that he would ever see the field as a safety though, at 5’9" 190 he’d be undersized for sure (but Tyrone Carter has had his moments), at that size he’s almost undersized at CB in today’s NFL.
I have heard quite a few “draft experts” say that if Alphonso Smith were 6’ tall he’d be a top ten pick, in their minds at least, no doubt. That’s encouraging.
Sean Smith played for a high profile, but still a lower level, school. I think Utah’s right up there but in terms of week to week competition, they’re not in the top half of the country.
Alphonso Smith out of the ACC (not a football power house either) has played against more NFL quality WR’s which would lead me to believe the transition wouldn’t be as difficult. But not necessarily.
Alphonso’s collegiate stats dwarf Sean’s, but Sean is much bigger and younger.

The steelers are bringing in a fair amount of CBs that could be projected into the safety position, so I think the thought that they may be looking to backup that position is very valid. I don’t think they draft early for their strong safety though. The steelers are bringing in a lot of late late in the draft (or after) CBs.
If they are going to pick up their future safety I’m guessing it is going to be in the later rounds. Personally I don’t know that the steelers are even going to draft a CB early, but a lot of “experts” and some other data points to them doing so.

Vonte Davis but.......
Personally I like Vonte Davis at CB for the Steelers but not sure its a good idea since he tested positive for marijuana at the combine.

I am sure Mike Tomlin can get the most out of Davis but don’t know if his addition to the team would be something the Steelers brass do as they usually avoid guys with question marks about their character.
Also I have a feeling we might see him and Santonio hanging out a little too much…….
Safety as a nickle back
Sean Smith, a lot of sites say he is more an NFL safety. Which I am fine with drafting a safety for the future, right now the Steeler’s have 3 on the roster, and Troy and Clark go do pretty often. Living with just Carter is pretty scary, plus Clark is a FA next year.
Question? Does anyone know a team that uses a safety as their nickle back?
Smith does play CB. Hey if we don’t take an o-lineman in the 1st, I think we have to in the 2nd. So, if we could take a safety and CB with 1 pick we should, but I still say Alphonso is the guy. i picked him

I’m against picking a midget at CB in round 1, but that’s just me.

Antoine Winfield
I don’t know if thats spelled right. Exact same size. Averages 67 tackles per season and has 20 career int’s. He’s known throughout the league as one of the best tackling corners in the NFL. Odviously they’re not the same guy, but hopefully you get my point.
That “midget” is still 3 inches taller than me.

There’s examples of “physically limited” guys dominating probably every position from time to time. For the steelers though? Obviously we don’t have the talent that a first round pick would bring, but physically we have the smaller stature guys taken care of. This doesn’t mean we need to draft a giant, but as time goes by the WRs in the league are getting taller and taller. With that natural progression I think this is the wrong time to be investing in a smaller CB, at least in the first round.
Ike can hold down the fort, but when we’re going against teams with two taller WRs it’d be nice to have someone that can ride the roller coasters, especially if we’re spending a 1st rounder to do so.

Yeah
I was just trying to stick up for us little guys out here.
Truthfully I have real doubts about two things that Sean Smith brings to the table. Is he physical enough to be a saftey, and/ or is he athletic enough to cover a WR. This is the problem Jimmy Williams had when he came into the league a few years ago. Now he’s out of the league after two years (but I heard grumblings of an attempted return to the league with the 49ers). Personally I’d take Alphoso, his only knock is size, where as Sean has two big question marks on him. This is all real speculative, I really don’t see us taking either guy.

I don’t like either pick either, but I never miss an opportunity to poke fun. I think AlpHonSolo has a better shot if only because the steelers appear to be bringing him in for a visit, which surprised me.
Eventually Ikey is going to need to be replaced, but it’s hard going for the steelers, ala McFadden. It’s awhile before the players can learn the system, even longer before they can be good in the system, and by the time they could be great in the system, they’re gone. This year or the next is probably a good time to draft a solid CB though, I’m just not sold on anyone this year that I’d like to be the #1 in a few. As for the #2/nickle? No need to draft in the first for someone like that.

Both or Neither
I think if Alphonso is available in the first, and Darius Butler, (UCONN) and all of the top 5 Otackles is gone, then he is ours at 1.32 (over all the center prospects). If we pick a lineman in round one, and none of the top three centers are available at the end of round two, and Sean smith is availabe, we snag him. Have you seen his one hand catch on youtube. At 6’3’’ 218 with 4.47 speed, and put him playing centerfield (FS) in a year or two and watch him be one of the top three in interceptions year after year.
