And you wonder why Bengals fan dislike you

Not that you care. Because I am sure you don't. But I have gotten the question from Steelers fans before- Why do Bengals fans hate the Steelers so much?

Let me make something clear first- I don't just randomly hate Steelers fans. I don't see someone with a Steelers jersey on and go out of my way to kick their puppy. Any of the Steelers fans I have held anomosity for in the past have earned it. For example, the fan that threw a full beer can at my head when I was in Pittsburgh for a game in '06. Or the guy that showed up at Bengals training camp with a custom Steelers paint job on his truck and honking his semi-truck airhorn all throughout practice, then talking s#$% to people walking back to there car even if they had kids with them.

That being said, let me point something out- we know we suck. Not as much as we used to, I grew up with the Bengals in the 90's so really it can't get much worse for me, but we are well aware of our history and where we stand (minus the bandwagon fans we have picked up in recent years). How many times do you need to kick a fan when he is down? Which seems to be a lot looking over the pot shots in the posts. I am not saying don't take some (like you owing Mike Vanderjat a SB ring), but what can be gained from constantly taking shots at the Bengals other that to make you feel better about yourself?

The thing that bugs me the most though would be the sense of entitlement some Steelers fans have. That being a Steelers fan you are entitled to SB titles and winning seasons just because you put on a Steelers jersey. Again, I know this is not the case for all Steelers fans, but you are out there. I have met you.

I know this is not going to change anything, I am prepared for the rash of comments that are going to be left on this post. But I just thought I would finally answer this question for those of you out there that are wondering.

Steeler Fans are sports fans

And there are obnoxious sports fans everywhere in the world. Winning team ones can be especially obnoxious cause you don’t have a comeback.

Thanks for crying. I hope you feel better now as I’m sure that the regular attenders at this site are not the dbags you’re speaking of.

Also I hate Bengals fans who use the phrase “Who Dey” over and over. As the Chin once put it, ‘We Dey’.

I am not crying, as I pointed out I don’t expect this to change anything. And I would expect that the vast majority of people on this site would put aside the rivalry (except on game day) in favor of actualy football discussion instead of just slandering each other. What baffles me is the fact is that you are on top, you have the most SB wins out of any franchise, and yet (on varying levels) a lot Steelers fans still go out of their way to come down on the Bengals. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Way to be quick on the “We dey” comeback by the way. Only took about two decades.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

In every fanbase there are Morons

But don’t come playing the pity card when there are plenty of Bengal Fans just as bad as some of the fans you listed above.

As for a “sense of entitlement” I really don’t see that at all. We expect to win, yes, as does any fan of a successful sports team, it’s called expectations. We wouldn’t be doing our job as fans to say “Oh Gee, we already have so many Superbowl victories, let’s give another team a chance to win a Superbowl.” What you see as “entitlement” is merely what any fan hopes for.

Most of us don’t condone the vulgarities that fly from some of our fellow Steeler fans mouth’s, or acts of stupidity. That is not our responsibility, and we can do very little to stop it. However you have to keep in mind that this is a rivalry, a bitter rivalry at that, and when you have the low class players that so frequent the Bengals and do things like step on a terrible towel or talk trash all day and night, it’s just like painting a bulls eye on your back. Now I’m not saying that’s your fault either, but in any rivalry there’s gonna be a lot of nasty exchanges; it’s just part of the game.

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

I know that we have moron fans as well, especially in recent years. But if one of those fans is acting out of line they are going to get told to STFU right away by me. And I am sure there are tons of Steelers fans that would do the same if roles are reversed. But of all the fans I have encountered, by far and away I have the most negative experience with Steelers fans. I have family that went to a game in the 80’s, wanted to go in to a bar before the game to grab a drink, the place would not serve them or let them even use the restroom. Fans are one thing, a business turning there nose at people is another.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 14, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

that sucks,

but an owner has a right to refuse business. I wish and hope we now live in a world that is the only reason one is refused is because of rooting on the wrong sport team.

OH NO Not allowed to get a drink?

My parents were at a Steelers/Raider game in Oakland in the 70’s. They watched as a Steeler fan 25 yards away got beaten into a coma and later died.

I went to a Steeler Raider game a few years ago and saw a Steeler fan get curb-stomped in the parking lot. It isnt just Raider fans, but dude, come on. They werent served drinks? Really?

Here

I’ll give some examples pulled from the site

Pulled from the Levi Jones post

“Released by Bengals That statement generally deems a player to be of poor quality to our system.”

“good call I just submitted the term "released by bengals" to urban dictionary, I will let you know if they accept.

It was defined as "being the a horrible football player; you suck"

Levi’s pretty much done. But for a team that had the o-line woes just like us last year, seems ridiculous.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 14, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

Whoa whoa whoa, we trash the bengals way worse than that. You found some tame examples.

Whenever we talk about criminals, the bengals come up. “Ah, gary russell got busted in a drug dealers house, no wonder the bengals were so quick to pick him up.” It gets worse, including calling the bengals the joke of the league, etc.

These are all just jokes though man. Let us have a little fun and I apologize for you getting beer dumped on you and your great grandfather getting turned away at a bar.

This is a question that has been asked of me multiple times by Steelers either at games or people I actually know. It would have been to easy to just go with the obvious as well and start complaining about the ’05 playoff game which I got tired of from Bengals fans.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 14, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

We don’t go out of our way to insult the Bengals, heck we don’t even go out of our way to insult the Browns (just their city). We do work on insulting the Ravens, because their team is relevant.

You may have to forgive us for insulting Bengals fans when they are around, it’s a rare opportunity and we try to make the most of it. Have you seen any Bengals fans getting beat up by Steelers fans in Cincy? Or would there have to be Bengals fans at the game for that to happen?

See how easy it is, really it is hard to resist. Also with your signature, really? We are the ones who delight in beating you? There’s a lot of bitterness in your fandom, and I understand that. Your team could be a proud franchise if it weren’t for horrible personnel decisions consistently being made.

There is hope though, Dan is going to Ireland, Ben supposedly is doomed in just 7 or 8 seasons, Hampton Harrison and Aaron Smith are all in their thirties. Bengals will have their opportunities in the future to challenge for the division. Until then why don’t you at least try to beat the Browns.

Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?

by Phantaskippy on May 15, 2009 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

In terms of the signature, it has nothing to do with the Steelers fans, its just that as long as I have been a Bengals fan, we have never beat you guys twice in one season. The fact of the matter is, it is normally the other way around. I would not actually want to go 2-14 and all, I just use it as a a joke.

Browns story.

Favorite Browns moment ever.

Years back I was driving into Canton Ohio listening to the end of the Steelers game on the radio when I finally got out of signal range. I flipped through the stations trying desperately to find a sports station, and settled on a post game for the Browns Bengals just getting going.

Seriously, this is accurate: The host starts the show by stating “I know Corey Dillon had a monster game today, and Tim Couch struggled, but I don’t want any calls about trading Tim Couch for Corey Dillon because it is ridiculous and will never happen.” I was stunned, I couldn’t believe you would start a show like that. (instead of singing about noodles and what’s on your cranium like a proper post game show)

The best part is the first 5 callers had three, Three calls that were simply “Hey, what do you think about trading Tim Couch for Corey Dillon?” They weren’t angry fans venting, or trying to tick the guy off, they were serious. They wanted to know the likelihood of this trade occurring.

I laughed so hard. And the Steelers won on the last drive so everything was great.

Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?

I have never really wondered or cared if Bengals fans hated us or not. I have never treated a fan of another team poorly at ANY sporting event. I have, however, been threatened and had insults hurled at me and my 3 kids by drunk and idiotic Bengals and Clowns fans. No matter. I know that ALL Bungle fans are not that way. In fact, the guitar player in my band is a long time die hard Cinci fan, and I was even in his wedding!! And since we both like baseball, and my team has done worse lately than the Reds, I am on the recieving end of a few jabs in that regard. My point is, IT"S JUST A GAME. Friendly banter is one thing….as long as it’s not personal, and most of us here at BTSC enjoy lively discussions about the game(s), players, strategy, etc. You will find idiots in all walks of life, sir, and most of us here try not to paint with a broad brush.

by Phantaskippy on May 15, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

Pittsburgh is very fortunate

Our sports teams have been blessed with some of the classiest individuals imaginable. Think of Roberto Clemente. For a superstar athlete to risk his life, and use his own money, to pay for and organize a flight of relief supplies into another country is astounding. How many spoiled professional athletes (or for that matter overpaid CEOs) would even lift a finger in those circumstances? The Rooneys have run the Steelers franchise with great class and dignity. The list of classy, dignified Pittsburgh athletes who have given back to their communities is so long: Mel Blunt, my blog namesake, Willie Stargell, Mario Lemieux, Franco—-those are just the tip of the iceberg. All indications are that Mike Tomlin too is a man of uncommon character. That is undoubtedly what led to his hiring.

One of the reasons I love the Steelers is that they care about the character of their players. I enjoy reading about the family atmosphere on the team, and that Ryan Clark’s little boy gets tossed up in the air by all the players at the end of practices. I know this is an unrealistic, romanticized view of professional sports, but sports should be about striving to be our best, not settling for less. All of these admirable men and women set a high standard. As fans we should have our fun, enjoy our successes, zing our rivals from time to time. But we should support our beloved teams with as much class and dignity as the best of them display. Wouldn’t it be cool to be known as the loudest, loyalist, most knowledgeable AND classiest fan base?

I'm in Ohio

Listen….Bengal fans…..learn from a Pirate fan…..shut your mouth until you have something worth saying. Whining is so feminine.

Children are coddled and get to hang off the teat for years. Its retarded. The 5 year old watching his dad be verbally abused should then realize it is his duty as a Bengals fan to defend his honor (whatever that is) and learn to toughen up and grow a pair.

I watched my dad suffer through Super Bowl 30 post harassment, and though I was just 6 years old, I learned too that it was important.

ENTITLEMENT IS YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM???

first off, there are asshole fans everywhere (i’m meet my far share of bengals fans that were jerks) and what those ppl did was simply wrong & i can understand why you dont like us.
but if your major complaint is that we act “entitled” cuz we are currently successful & won a fair amount of superbowls….we’ll thats just dumb. every fan for every sports team everywhere behaves like that. bet if your bengals won a couple, you’d act like you won them yourself cuz THAT’S HOW IT WORKS. its YOUR team.

if you wanna hate us, hate us cuz we’ve been beating you on a regular basis recently, cuz we blew out palmers knee, cuz we’ve been pretty successful, cuz you’ve met obnoxious fans, cuz we’re division rivals….but not because we’re proud team and that we’d like to think we played a part (however small) in those super bowl victories.

by t1mmy10 on May 16, 2009 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

then the word you're looking for is arrogance

i do agree that some steelers fans have added a lil swagger to their gait with our most recent super bowl win (i dont agree with it either). but there is a difference between being arrogant and being proud of your achievements. and i’m curious to know when you began your dislike.

by t1mmy10 on May 18, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I know there is a difference, I am acknowledging that fact. I have no problem with fans who are proud of what their team has done.

My dislike goes back to the days of Bam Morris and that era. And while I dislike the Steelers, I do respect them. I am not one of the Bengals fans who jumped on the Wagon in ‘05 or even at the start of the Marvin era. I went through the Akili Smith’s, Dan Wilkinson’s, Ki-Jana Carter’s. The only bright spots I had when I became a conscious Bengals fan (I say conscious because I went to games when I was little during the 80’s, but was to young to truly follow football) were Shake and Blake and Boomers final year.

Interesting Poast and here is my thoughtage

Firstly we dont owe Vandershank shit. If the ref’s hadnt robbed Troy P, the game never would have even been that close in the first place.

Secondly your team puts it on themselves. Its one thing to suck due to freak situations like Palmers injury, but its another thing to suck due to terrible front office, and constant influx of criminal characters.

Your team singlehandedly has had enough people go to prison to start a AFL game.

We’ve had years where we were sub-par (2003 anybody) but at the same time we had a respectful non-convict lineup that played well when they won.

Anyway, it comes with the rings. Bragging rights. Its called rights, like miranda rights or bill of rights. We have the right to be dicks when our team utterly owns yours.

Plus one, Mechem.

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

Heres my "thoughtage" on your "poast"

So because your team wins, their fans have the right to talk s#$% in front of little kids and throw full beer cans at fans of other teams?

And don’t sit here and complain about the refs, the game plays out the way it does and b#$%ing about refs is never a vaild point. If Palmer’s knee had not gone blown out in the playoff game then that would have been a different game as well. But it happened, so we have to live with it. The refs did throw that flag, and then Vanderjat (or however you spell it) choked. The Steelers didn’t win that game, the Colts lost it.

Yes we had a lot of arrests in one year. But of those, only one is still with the team, which I don’t condone, but the rest of the players that were arrested that year are gone. So in the years after that season, let’s compare-

Steelers players arrested-

James Harrison, Arrested on charges of simple assault and criminal mischief after police said he broke down a bedroom door at girlfriend’s home after she locked herself in.

Najeh Davenport, Charged with domestic violence, child endangerment and unlawful restraint after incident involving mother of his 5-year-old son, who suffered a swollen lip.

Cedric Wilson- Arrested and charged with simple assault, harrassment and disorderly conduct after allegedly hitting his former girlfriend in the face at bar.

Santonio Holmes, possession

Deshea Townsend, Charged with simple assault after incident at club on Pittsburgh’s south side

Jeff Reed- Cited for criminal mischief and disorderly conduct after allegedly throwing tantrum in restroom of convenience store. He allegedly damaged towel dispenser after finding it empty.

Richard Seigler- Arrested on charges he ran a prostitution ring in Las Vegas, three felony counts.

Cincinnati-

Leon Hall- Charged with DUI after being pulled over at 3:11 a.m.

Ahmad Brooks- Charged with misdemeanor assault, accused of punching woman in face in Kentucky.

Chris Henry harged with assault and disorderly conduct after police said he punched man in the head and threw beer bottle threw car window.

Quincy Wilson- Charged with disorderly conduct after refusing police request to disperse after wedding in West Virginia.

AJ Nicholson- Arrested, charged with misdemeanor assault. Police said his girlfriend told them he hit her in the eye.

By my count, thats 7-5 with the Steelers taking the title since the Bengals run off arrests around the ’06 season. If you want to count players still with the team, Steelers win 3-2. The Bengals are just the scapegoat for a problem that is a problem throughout the entire NFL, not just centralized to one team.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

as to the 2005 game

I’m not arguing mechem’s point. I could give a crap that your players go to jail (although I giggle about it immaturely sometimes). I also still say that every team of every sport has dicks that attend their games. I’ve seen Dad’s of high school soccer players get into fist-fights. Whenever you get a lot of people in one spot there will be a few that are a-holes. Team affiliation has nothing to do with it.

On to the Colts game:
But to say that Vanderjadt gave us the game by missing that kick ignores some critical things. That would have only tied the game. So how can you say that the Steelers would have lost in OT? The Steelers were playing one of the best games I’ve ever seen out of them, so why would they have lost in OT? And if you get to question the ‘idiot kickers’ miss as to the outcome of the game why can’t we question the missed call, that the NFL even acknowledged as a missed call?

by Chicago Steeler on May 18, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

No one can really say what would have happened in overtime. The Steelers might have won the game in OT or the Colts might have gained momentum/ confidence enough if Vanderjadt had made the field goal to pull it out. We will really never know.

And there is a difference between a missed FG and a bad call by a ref. Vanderjadt held the opportunity for the Colts to put that game in OT. In that moment he was in control of whether that game would continue or end there. A player will never have that much control over whether or not a flag is thrown.

The whole Vanderjadt thing is just a jab/ joke when I say it anyway. Along the same lines as fans from other teams joking how the Bengals players bus also has Hamilton County Sheriff written on the side and our facilities including three hots and a cot.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

LOL at your arrests

Jeff Reed broke a damn towel dispenser.

Who the hell is Richard Seigler

Holmes possession was a bad one, but we all smoke weed.

Najeh And Cedrick arent on the team and Ced was released instantly.

Silverbacks baby momma was a liar and they dropped it.

Three of your guys hit people in the face.

And yes, kids have to learn sometime.

We can go back and forth on this all day long, but again, this is a problem of the NFL, not just the Bengals. Good players are giving a sense of invincibility going back way to far and it comes to light once they reach the pro’s or sometimes college.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

Y’all are welcome to your arrogance. Ya earned it. Or, should I say, your team earned it. Y’all didn’t do squat but such is the projection of fandom everywhere. But all this crap equating the Bengals with criminals is just complete BS and beneath anyone looking to poke fun at an organization that’s already sitting there with Mike Brown and family- fish meet barrel. We had basically two players who actually mattered have brushes with the law, Odell and Chris Henry, neither for anything approaching a felony. To me, both of them put together don’t add up to the lack of character it takes to beat one’s wife, like, say, James Harrison? Or to gang up on a man because ya can’t handle him by yourself, like, say, Joey Porter’s method of taking on Levi Jones. Lance Briggs, Marshawn Lynch, Donte Stallworth, Leonard Little, Matt Jones, Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, good ol’ Mike Vick, the abovementioned Harrison and Porter, Jamal Lewis. Each one of these guys’ exploits positively dwarfs anything the Bengals have ever gotten into- unless you count gross criminal negligence in the owning and operation of a supposed professional spoorts franchise as a felony.

If I were y’all, I’d be thanking the good lord everyday for the Rooney family.

And I have to ask… When was the last time you had a good season then?

by MarkJoel66 on May 19, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

It's a joke

I have already talked about this. I believe I said something along the lines that it is normally the other way around (meaning that you guys normally beat us twice in a season). But I don’t feel like digging through 80 posts for someone who is like a child that wanders into a conversation and wants to know what is going on.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 19, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

The real reason

The only reason Bengals fans dislike us is because we don’t suck total ass, and our linebackers’ jawbones aren’t made of balsa wood.

Is the Rivers jawline crack all you have?

I already read that one from you over on cincyjungle. Work up some new material.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 20, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions

yeah but its true

Its kinda sad that the league has to make rules to protect YOUR players.

If your players knew any better they’d just look around. Thats all rivers had to do.

Yall saw what Suggs (I think) did when he saw Ward coming? He hit the deck. Like a bitch. But he did. So his jaw didnt break. Had rivers done the same, we’d all be happy.

But no Fuhrer goodell carith a great deal for the bungles of cincinaticus and realizates they are a species facing endangerment.

by Mechem on May 20, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

That is Goodel's MO, not mine

I think the Ward hit on Rivers was one of the cleanest hits that I have seen in a long time. And I personally am getting fed up with all the rules that the NFL is putting in place to protect players. It’s a football game, people are going to get hurt. But the NFL is making these rules not to protect the players, but to protect their profits. They see that a Patriots team with Brady playing or a Bengals team with Carson playing is going to pull in more profit than either of those teams without them.

It’s true with when Carson got hurt to- it’s part of the game. The motion for throwing the ball leaves that part of your body exposed. So unless there is some change in the throwing motion, there will still be QB’s from time to time that are going to have their knees get blown out.

Yes, Rivers should have had his head on a swivel. But I would not want him hitting the deck either. Plus he never sat there and tried to complain about what happened or say it was a dirty hit.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 20, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually what that implies is that if Rivers has a chance to hit Ward he is going to take it.

It does not reveal anything about whether or not he thought the hit was dirty.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 21, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats a straight karma ref

He is implying that Ward is creating bad karma man…

Bottom line is he was a rook and made a basic rookie mistake, not watching enough Hines Ward footage pre-game. Or possibly thinking he was too bad-ass to get boofed.

Screw Bunhole Fans!

I took my 8 year old son to the 2005 Wild Card game know infamously known as KIMO-GATE where Palmer went down. I mean to tell you, I’ve never …. NEVER … in my 40 some year old life was ever treated so rudely by whiny bitch Bungal fans who actually thought they were somebody that year. My son was actally afraid for his life as these old homers behind us were actaully starting shit with a 10 year old kid all because he was rooting for his Steelers team and wearing a Ben Roeth jersey. I finally had enough and turned around to nearly a whole row of Bung fans and told the fat ass, “you say another world to my son and I’m going to knock your F’ing head off of your shoulders” . I looked at his 3 friends and also extended the invitation to them as well. Needless to say, they didn’t say another word. I had a few behind them try to join in the fun, but I was immediately backed up by a few Steeler fans and even some sensible Bengal fans said the guy was out of line.

by Tomlin's Crib on May 21, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Unfortunately

that year we did pick up a lot of a@#$hole fans. I have a friend from high school who grew up a Steelers he fan, he told me that after all his years of being a Steelers fan in Cincy, that was the first year he had ever felt threatened (though he would have easily handled himself).

Those are our bandwagon fans. You the people who have stuck with the team throughout the years will give you some guff, but will keep it within reason and won’t do it when people are bringing kids.

Out of curiosity, were you in one of the endzones?

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on May 22, 2009 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

Yes .. I was in the north end zone

Me and my son were about 10 row up right next to the tunner where the Steelers came out.

Fantastic seats for that game. It’s one I’ll never forget becuase when Joey Porter was leading the team chant from the center of the circle in the tunnel with all the boom microphones and cameras around, they were right next to us and made it feel like we were right there in the circle with the team.

I’ve never been so pumped up in all my life.

Yea the endzones get a little ridiculous

For some reason that is where the vast majority of that crap goes down. And actually the south end zone is even worse from what I gather.
