BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack-Rooney Rule Edition
IX- Dale Lolley posted some notes from the offseason training activities, and focused mostly on Ryan Mundy. With Troy Polamalu training in California and Ryan Clark taking it easy after his shoulder surgery, Mundy has been getting reps with the first team. Lolley made a few other statements and I encourage you to check out his notes.
X- The acquisition of Stephan Logan has been overshadowed by the Steelers 2009 draft picks. Receiver Mike Wallace and Cornerback Joe Burnett both excelled previously in return duties and their potential has excited fans so much that the acquisition of Logan, a 5'7, 185 running back from the CFL has been forgotten. Logan has so far put on a good showing at workouts. He is typical Steelers signing in the Tomlin era, being brought in to ensure there is healthy competition at all positions. Logan hasn't been on anyone's roster predication that I have seen, but I think we might be pleasantly surprised with Logan's skills in the pre-season.
XIII- The NFL is in discussions to expand the "Rooney Rule" beyond its current scope. Currently the rule only applies to NFL head coaches, but recently the NFL has engaged in talks to expand the rule to NFL General Managers. It makes sense to me with that amount of minorities now playing and coaching that more minorities have opportunities and access to obtain some of the highest positions within an NFL franchise.
XIV- What are the best and worst Pittsburgh jerseys to own? ESPN ranks them for us, but I tend to think we should compile our own list here at BTSC. A national news source doesn't know what's really important to us die hard Pittsburgh fans. I definitely owned one of the jerseys they ranked as the worst. (Hint: it rhymed with Mordell Flewart) Also, another hilarous website is Straight Cash Homey, which is the worlds only website devoted to random sports jersey sightings.
XL- Terry Bradshaw was on the Tonight Show last night and was entertaining as usual, if only because I could barley understand what he was saying. Speaking of the Tonight Show, I am pretty excited for Conan to take over in a few weeks, and I am also super excited since Pearl Jam will be the musical quest on his first show and they will be playing songs from their new studio album. The only thing better would be me attending Pearl Jam playing a Super Bowl halftime show and the Steelers winning the game!
XLIII- We have discussed ad nausea the social and moral issues with Michael Vick here and here. If you would like to continue to chat about those feel free to do so, but I think an even more interesting topic is where he will play next. Peter King gives his top five places he thinks this former Falcon will land. The two I think are most probable are Buffalo, because they are desperate, and San Francisco because they have no real quarterback and Singletary has expressed some interest. I think if there is a team that will allow Vick to play quarterback he would be much more interested in that.

Pearl jam put me to sleep. Vedder is always drunk though, so that’s kind of cool.

I love rocking the Ward throwback
it always reminds me of that special Monday night! Baltimore Beatdowns indeed.

a response to a reader’s question.
Sweed looks more confident, like he has a better sense of what he’s supposed to do.

Yeah, but will he catch the ball?
That folks is the $1M dollar question.

RE: VICK
Chris Chase on the Shutdown Corner has a similar list. In the not listed category he lists Cincinati
Not listed: New England (John Clayton thinks this is a possibility, but adding Randy Moss(notes) was a risk with great reward. I’m not seeing what the huge benefit would be in signing Vick); Cincinnati (just because Vick’s an ex-con doesn’t mean Cincinnati automatically wants him); Washington (just because Vick is a big name doesn’t mean Washington automatically wants him.)

Jerseys...
Somewhere in my closet, my black Ricardo Colclough jersey still hangs.
by Hines Ward on May 20, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
win
Colclough takes the cake, I think. I can imagine getting one, too, cuz we were so hungry for a great defensive back.
It’s not a jersey, but I bought a custom-made Scott Steelers sweatshirt for Nate Washington last year, since his high school is across the street from me. But I don’t regret it. I wouldn’t regret buying an Anthony Smith jersey either, if I would ever have spent over $200 for a jersey. If I had his jersey, I’d look like the one non-foolish Steeler fan when he is going to the Pro Bowl every year for the Packers.
My friend’s Merrill Hoge jersey always gets tons of love. But not as much as the 1981 Giant Eagle shirt I’ve watched the Steelers win two Super Bowls in.
One of the most ironic jersey situations – another buddy (a Pens fan) was also a big Rick Tocchet fan. He had a Flyers Tocchet jersey and he also had a Pens Mark Recchi jersey. Then Tocchet got traded for Recchi.

I’m super excited about Conan taking over. If it weren’t for him, Stephen Colbert, and John Stewart I probably wouldn’t know what laughter is.

Vick to Pats
would make sense to me. THey have no legitimate 2nd QB and the media refuses to criticise the team. They’ll slobber all over it and talk about players buying into the system and how awesome the locker room is. plus he’s old so he’ll fit in there.
by Steely McSmash on May 20, 2009 11:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Vick a Patriot
The wife is doing a gag me motion when I tell her there may be a chance of Vick going to the Pats. She as I have mentioned before is a die hard Pat fan, and she thinks Vick should be barred from the NFL. I think that would be a good thing after the way the Pats system cooled Randy Moss’s jets.
As for the Rooney Rule, didn’t like it then and like it even less now. I think positions need be filled on merit, and skin color should not be a condition for consideration.

yes but...
It’s not like Affirmative Action where you’re required to have a certain percentage, it’s merely that you have to interview a minority candidate. Whom you hire remains your prerogative. I’m not sold on the idea but I see no harm in it.
by Chicago Steeler on May 21, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
we have a
man of color in the highest office of the united states… we shouldnt need rules anymore making it mandatory to interview, hire, or anything else.

Tomlin
if not for the Rooney rule, Grimm or Whiz would be our coach rather than Tomlin. i’ll take the Rooney Rule thanks!!
by tawright on May 21, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not necessarily...
I think the Rooney’s may of at least interviewed Tomlin. After all it is “their” rule. They are the ones most likely to abide by this rule even if it wasn’t there.

If I saw..
Either an O’Donnell or a Queerdell jersey I might have to give that person a piece of my mind. That’d be disgraceful to wear either one.
Also, isn’t it sad that they have to enforce something like the “Rooney Rule”? You would think our country has come along far enough that race should not have to be considered. You pick the best man for the job, colorblind. It’s sad there is still prejudice in what I see as a great country.

Dont hate Kordell
Look, the only jersey I think we all can agree must be burned is Maddox.

Why not hate Slash?
He was one season and done.
by Johnny_S on May 21, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Still Can't...
Bring myself to hate Kordell. Sure, he was inconsistent, but I think at least 50% of his failure is on some of the coaching staff that was in place during his time in the Burgh. First off, Cowher never should have tried making him a pure quarterback. He was too valuable an athlete at the WR position to make a QB out of. Had we kept Kordell at receiver, we never would have had to draft someone like Will Blackwell. Of course, maybe then we never would have drafted Hines Ward. But, I digress.
Also, Ray Sherman. The guy instituted a West Coast style Kordell just wasn’t right for. You saw what happened when Mike Mularkey got the position in ’01. Jerome Bettis was leading the league in rushing before he got hurt late in the season, and Kordell was not only a Pro Bowler, but a candidate for league MVP.
And the was Pittsburgh treated Kordell was just cruel. Dumping beer on the guy when he’s going into the locker room? Starting rumors about his sexuality? You stay classy, Pittsburgh.
by Hines Ward on May 21, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
+1
I thought Slash had a chance. He played a hell of a season in that system. And if we could have kept him as Slash? So much fun watching all the gadgets.

For me.
I wear an Antwaan Randle EL jesey on sundays. Is this played out? Should I get another one?
Also, Johnny_S great piont on the “Rooney Rule”. I dont know when we will all grow up.

I've got nothing against Randle El...
He was a great role player when he was here and helped us win a super bowl (nice throw). After that he’s been a disappointing to the Skins cause they’ve tried to use him further than his skills stretch.
But, I’d look at getting a new one if I was you. I saw a site recently that has really, really cheap authentic ones, they just aren’t sold through NFL, so they are cheaper.
by Johnny_S on May 21, 2009 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I love Randel El
But he took the cash and sold the eff out – he’s got a pre-game show in DC. SERIOUSLY.
he knows what his next career move is…
it certainly won’t be a ring.
I wonder if he regrets falling for the OkieDoke Danny Boy gave him….I mean, really.
Skins are all about cash generation and less about winning.
Am I wrong?
(I think not)
In other words, get a new jersey.
jerseys that are safe to own:
#86
- (for at least 3 years)
#43
#7
I’ll think about the rest….but those are safe for now.

Other jersey with me at the White House yesterday…
leftwich…
I didn’t even know you could buy a Leftwich jersey.
I was sporting #10 only because I wanted to support the SB winning catch…though, I toyed with wearing #92 just to make a point :)

Randell El seems to like it in D.C….if I am not mistaken he re-nogatiated his contracted with the Skins in order to free up Cap Space for the Head Stomper Albert Hanyesworth

right -
because he’s making his next career move…I’m sure…lol
Haynesworth – will that pay off?
me and @redskinsinsider think, probably not so much.
BUT, Danny Boy will sell a lotta jerseys :)
So, in that respect, maybe he does “pay off.”

Porter Jersey
I still bust out my #55 black, but then of course i roll into a half shirt and stand inches away from the 50 yard line talkin smack during pre-game warm-ups. I miss Joey.
As for Vick – I have a friend that lives in the Minneapolis that says the vikings have a little buzz going about Vick. That could be an interesting backfield with Vick and Peterson.
Have you ever seen Mike Tomlin and Omar Epps in the same place at the same time?

Anyone rockin' a Deuce Deuce?
Saw a Deuce Staley jersey about two weeks ago. I was baffled by two things:
A. The Steelers made and sold at least one of those things.
B. That this guy was actually wearing it. I should of asked him why, or if he even knew who it was, but just stood there somewhere between amazement and sickened.

Kordell, I didn’t think Duce was bad. Dude just couldn’t stay healthy. But that was a BEASTLY backfield…Parker, Staley, Bettis, and Haynes.
<3 those teams.

But he was injured the entire time he was here. I was extremely excited to have him come in. Then he was just a living injury.

Jersey
I think first of all you see people wearing the jerseys at a game because its the only one they got. I got an FWP and I know very likely his time on the team is limited to maybe a couple years max.
I’ve seen Zereoue jersey’s at the last game I attended lol.

waiting
I am waiting for the Frank Summers jersey to be released, preferably in the throwback version (not counting the custom ones you can have made). I am going to go with that one and perhaps a LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison one, I already got 2 Big Ben ones, a Bettis, and Heath.
